I had to cut my flight short | Airborne decision making in snowy weather | Cabri G2

  • I had to cut this flight considerably shorter than I had planned due to snow showers in the area. This flight demonstrates why we are taught how to make safe and successful diversions in the air because things often don't quite go according to plan when you're flying. There's snow on some of the fields, including our airfield at Leicester which adds extra hazards to be aware of too. This is the first time I've ever flown a helicopter with snow around. Spoiler alert - it's beautiful! As always, thanks for watching. 🚁

    Great vid Rory, some of the best flying conditions during the winter. EMA ATC in my opinion the best in the country, very accommodating, polite and friendly I did a number of transits Long Eaton/Shepshed and vice versa during 2020 as well as just North of Derby City Centre in their zone and they were fantastic. So cool holding at Ratcliffe Power Station watching landing traffic before crossing their extended centreline. Loving the AC/DC quips - glad that you stopped when you did though lol! What a Whole Lotta Rotor your video was, and you were Back Before it Went Black! . I never did Donnington, I rocked out at Reading and MK Bowl, although, it's all a bit of a blur (no pun intended, but I did get to see Blur at Bournemouth ha ha!).
    When my friend's dad was doing his PPL, in the late 1960s, he did a practice XC in the snow with an instructor. The two other Airfields couldn't be landed at, but it was good experience and hour building after going solo at 8/9 hrs. Came time to land back home and every time the landing was set up, apparently perfectly? The instructor told him to go around. On the third time, with a longer finals, my friend's dad asked why they kept going around and what was wrong. The instructor replied (chuckling) that he didn't fancy landing in the ploughed field adjacent to the runway! The tyre marks on the runway and the ploughed field ruts looked almost identical! Snow, from above, looks similar across lots of once distinct surfaces. Good experience though. And my friend's dad had a three hour drive to and from the airfield that day! Lots more Airfields back then, but flying schools were more dispersed as most local airfields were still military.

    Thanks for sharing Rory, its always lovely flying in winter, crisp blue skies, and the snow on the ground can turn everything into black and white which is weird to see. You’re looking very confident in flying the Cabri, handling the radio, map, getting a ruler out, all whilst keeping it in balance and flying true - lots of practice I guess. How many hours do you have on the heli now?

    • @RoryOnAir
      @RoryOnAir  3 роки тому

      I have about 150 hours heli time now, almost all of it in the Cabri. I do feel more confident with it now but I’m yet to be really tested by bad weather or some kind of emergency so I’m very conscious of not getting complacent. 150 hours is nothing in the scheme of things. Thanks for your comment.

    Great video thanks. When you called Tatenhill you gave a pretty comprehensive (long) first call yet you weren't really expecting a response. If someone was 'in the office' and heard the call they may have missed the first part anyway. Why not just give a short call to them and listen out for a response before giving them the works. Not a criticism (I'm not a pilot) just seemed like you could have lightened your load a bit there. If my wife walks into the room where I am and starts downloading her day before catching my attention I'm likely to miss some vital information at the start of her message....... apparently. :-)

      I've explained on a previous video why I'm wearing the bars. I worked very hard to earn them and I'm proud of them so why not?

      @@RoryOnAir I don't have the willpower to watch all of your videos to seek answers I'm afraid. Aren't epaulettes awarded to pilots by a commercial operator to signify their rank within the aircraft? Did you land yourself a commercial job?

      @@Pastronomer69 I believe that’s how it works. You get 4 bars for being the captain, which in a single pilot helicopter, makes even someone as green as me the captain.
