- In this video, two of my pilot friends - Connor Mackay and Sam Hayes - join me for a trip to Turweston in the R44 Helicopter. Sam and Connor, who are both fellow graduates of the Helicentre Aviation HC1 CPL(H) course judge my pilot skills as we go and we do a lap of Silverstone racing circuit on our way back to Leicester.
If you enjoy my videos and you'd like to help support me making more you can buy me a coffee (or memory cards, batteries, hard drives, software licences etc) here - www.buymeacoffee.com/RoryOnAir
Sick of your sunglasses digging into your head under your aviation headset? Then get yourself a pair of Flying Eyes. Connor and Sam both enjoyed wearing them on this trip. Use my code and get 10% off Flying Eyes awesome sunglasses for pilots - flyingeyesoptics.com/eyewear/...

Conner's hair did make me laugh, he should have been a RAF pilot with that attitude. It was great that they gave you a Stirling endorsement of your flying abilities. I used to fly that area in my paramotor a long time ago and route up there from Bicester/Ambrosden area. Thanks for taking us along.
Cheers - thanks for watching and yes, perhaps he should! Would have been somewhat cheaper!
I've been to Turweston several times and I usually go direct to the south side grass, keeps me out of the FWs' way. And, your landing out of wind was better than mine into it...
Thanks! Yeah Turweston is a great place to visit. 👍
Enjoying your videos Rory, good work!. 10 year + ppl holder here; I always have a double take at the cost of heli hire. I used to do hour building in clanky C152s at £100 an hour. Barely 15 mins in an R44 lol. Having said that moving on to twins like the DA42 and the costs increase dramatically. Good luck on your mission.
Thank you! Yes, it’s not cheap but it’s bloody good fun.
Another great video Rory thanks for talking us with you. 👌
Thank you Lewis. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Cheers Rory, the facilities and cafe at Turweston is excellent, was there myself last Saturday for a few hours sat on the terrace in the sun.
Yes it’s a cracking airfield isn’t it Jason. Thanks for watching.
Great video Rory, there's a real good mix of shots to keep things engaging especially with the 360 cam. Excellent stuff as usual.
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it.
Top class production as ever! Fun to take fellow aviators up, always adds an element of pressure and you handled it marvellously
Thanks mate! 😁
Always great to see an upload.
Cheers!
Great stuff
Thanks!
I rory and lizzy hope both of you are well. Brilliant video buddy in the wind.brilliant views and I hope to see you in August take care and keep well philip.
Thanks Philip. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Looked to be a bit of a challenging flight, Rory.. well handled! As always, very entertaining 👌👏
Thanks very much Kevin. The wind was quite challenging but overall it was very enjoyable.
Great video - that’s a great looking 44 by the way
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Nice video as always 👍
Thanks very much Jeff. 👍
Rory, got a bit of a draft above my head can you turn the fan off please? NOOOOOOOOOOOO not that fan !! hehe.....another great vid, nice little jolly and adding to your flying hours, nice one, stay safe Rory, cheers chap, Daz.
😂😂 Cheers Daz.
Wicked stuff Rory. I actually spotted you in the cafe whilst queuing to buy some lunch, but was too shy to say hello! I also own the MK1 Golf you can see in the background at the 12:17 - 12:20 mark. Keep up the excellent content mate!
Ah you totally should have said hello. I’m actually very friendly and almost normal! Are you coming to our fly in?
@@RoryOnAir I really should have done! I'm certainly hoping to be at the fly-in, so I'll have to come and say hello then :)
Interesting video Rory. Always a challenge to fly with critical passengers but they were complimentary about your flying so that's great. I seldom pull off a greased landing if I have John (RV4) flying with me!
Thank you Tim. I seldom pull off a greaser at the best of times but it’s definitely harder with people who know! Thanks for watching.
Great video as ever!
Thank you! 😁
Another great show Rory. I think you need to get the lads trained up before you take them up again. Where were the Tunnock’s Teacakes??
This is an excellent point! You’d have thought Connor would have been in a good position to sort that given he’s from Scotland. Thanks for watching.
I would sit in lefthand seat or back seat with you Rory, Connor needs a haircut another entertaining video! Seems we all see something new when not concentrating on flying.Turweston always looks a great place to drop in with the plus of flying over Silverstone.
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. Need a haircut too!
Rory can you do a flight path over Countesthorpe ?
I’ve been over that way a few times already actually Thomas. Thanks for watching.
Nothing worse than the critique of fellow pilots 🤣
Great video Rory 👍
Ha ha - yes, I agree! I flew with Adrian and I was rubbish!
I have been following your videos since your training started, and have enjoyed the journey. I'm currently training for my PPL H. I just wanted to ask if there's a reason why you usually ask for a basic service rather than a traffic service?
Ta. Col.
Thanks for your loyal support Colin. It comes down to not wanting to add unnecessary extra work to controllers I think. A traffic service is safer but if I’m flying along looking out the window (and I have TCAS) I don’t feel the need to add to controllers workload. I guess it’s personal preference. I maybe wrong - it would be interesting to hear what others think.
Nice ride along again! 👍🏻 Would be awesome to catch a flight with you some day 😉
Cheers Jolmer. 👍
The Green Koala you saw is one of 4 of them (all different colours) based out of Denham. They are now all sporting Thunderbirds insignia, 1, 2, 3 & 4.
That sounds ace - they are a good looking machine.
Great video as always. I have just started my you tube journey!
Cheers Phil, I’m glad you enjoy my videos. 👍
Why take the dual controls out when you got a pilot in the other seat who is licensed? Great video as always. Got out flying today in the cadet after a 3 week lock down doing my first auto rotations.
Well neither of them are rated on the R44, nor are they checked out to fly from the left seat so it’s safer out. Sounds good!
What is the lowest you are allowed to fly in a Heli in the UK? Thanks for the ride along, followed you with Google Earth to look at Silverstone. I received my CFI in R-22's 1983 in ship #9, flew a beta a couple of weeks ago. Fun!! I'm a CFI fixed wing also. Happy tail winds!
Nice one - thank you for watching. 👍 We have to maintain 500 feet from any vehicle, person, animal or structure except when landing or taking off. Safe flying.
Your videos really does motivate me bit everytime i watch it. I had a doubt Rory sir can you set TO and From flag on CDI ? If yes then is it possible to explain in short how if not then just a simple yes or no would help thank you so much 😁
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it! I think that depends on the specifics of the instrument - this aircraft doesn’t have the equipment for that.
@@RoryOnAir oh I see , many thanks Rory 😊
the CDI provides the TO/FROM indication depending on the side of the radial/reciprocal you are on - it's only 'set' if you change the OBS to the reciprocal (in which case it will flip)
Conner needs some Brilcream and a blue uniform! Lol!
Can I ask Rory, what was the white circular thing atop of the panel binnacle and also how do you know how many miles away you are when you call up (Skydemon)?
Yes, Skydemon gives you all that info but you can ball park it from the chat. I think the white thing is something to do with the GPS but I’ll check.
Thanks Rory every day is a school day, always good to learn 😊 Do you think you'll get to fly a fixed wing microlight any time soon, or is it all still rotor wing for now?
@@musoseven8218 I’m just so busy and skint at the moment I can’t but I fully intend to fly the planes again soon.
What was the most extreme helicopter maneuver have you did Rory? Do not mean you have to do any, but by your own justification, any extreme maneuver you have to do for any reason.
can I ask at the beginning why was the helicopter parked so close to other ones before take off, Or was that just the angle of camera
Yeah the camera angle makes it look closer than it was. It was all fervently safe though. 😁
@@RoryOnAir I put it down to skilled piloting :)
What are basic service?
It’s a service from an air traffic unit which gives you some pretty basic information like the pressure setting. It’s also a formal way of establishing two way communication between an aircraft and the ground so that they know who we are should be need to call in an emergency. Thanks for watching.
Tell Connor to take a can or hairspray next time poor lads hair 🤣🤣
Ha ha - I’ll suggest it, but I’m not sure he’ll go for it. 😂
What kneeboarding are you using?
It’s a Flyboys kneeboard but I added a few extra flaps on the front. 👍
@@RoryOnAir thanks it was the flaps on front I was interested in :). Where did you get those?
@@markevans2625 I got them from Transiar also.
its good to see you rory and the guys sorry i forgot the names lol but its lucky you all have hair not like me being bald and disabled from a brain heammorrage etc it really plays havoc in everything i do. but hey i am alive and hope to see more later..... thank you.
Thanks for watching. 👍
@@RoryOnAir when are you going up again rory ..
G,day Rory from Sydney, Australia.
Hope all is well and good.
Q1. Are there many helicopters that you can hire to gain hours?
Q2. Can you now charge a fee to taxi/transport people or goods?
Thanks cobba (I believe that cobba was a friendship expression from WWl).
🌏🇭🇲
In English (as opposed to 'strilian) it's "cobber" and is believed to have originated in the County of Suffolk in 1893.
@@markaharris1952 thanks, cobber!
@John Fitzpatrick have you heard the term used much? Just also Australian here and never heard the term before. Googling it seems to be Australian English.
@@johnfitzpatrick2469 You're welcome sport! See, I've been learning Australian.
Thanks John. Yes there are plenty I could hire but helicentre have loads. Yes, I’m a commercial pilot so under the right AOC paperwork I could charge for my services.
I don’t remember 5 point harnesses on the R44
Yeah, it’s a mod for the pipeline.
@@RoryOnAir if you need some fuel cost help id be keen to help for a flight as passenger
@@jeffbridges666 thanks. Are you based near Leicester? It’s about £500 an hour so not a cheap day out…
@@RoryOnAir yes, very local to Leicester
@@RoryOnAir happy to contribute towards the flight
Conner's so bothered by his hair that he didn't have his mask over his nose. Quicker to potty train a baby than him to put as mask on over his nose, how did he get his licence. :-) Well it is have a pop at Connor. Great video.
He won’t be happy when he sees this comment… 😳 He had it down so it doesn’t steam up his glasses. I do the same if I’m wearing sunnies. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@RoryOnAir That is the problem when you have cool shades and neat hear, everything contrives to destroy the look, you just need to look at me to see what happens unless you are on it all the time.
@@RoryOnAir This type of mask is not suitable when flying with glasses. You have to use a 3M Aura mask. Tested in fixed wing aircrafts 😀
The skill and intelligence required to fly these amazing machines gets my full respect. Yet, still not enough talent to enable the co-pilot to understand how to wear a mask properly. Would someone like to explain to him what those holes in his nose do? 😱😷
Ha ha - it’s fogs up your glasses which is why he had it down a bit. Hopefully we won’t need to wear them much longer. Thanks for watching. 👍
.. and you survived a flight in an R44, wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, most dangerous helicopter on the market.
I have to say I disagree. There are accidents when people don’t fly them within their safe limits. I’ve so far found them to be very capable machines.
No point in wearing masks at all if your passenger isn’t going to cover his nose.
Shame it appears he has no regards for either of your safety
He was trying to avoid streaming up his glasses which would have caused him not to be able to see other traffic, therefore compromising safety so it’s all a balance. As it happens we all had negative Covid tests that morning so the risk was extremely low. I hope you enjoyed the video.
@@RoryOnAir Thoroughly enjoyed it as ever, excellent videography as always
