This is the most brilliant Millennium Falcon model I've ever seen.
    Your painting job is phenomenal.

Michael, this was a great series. I've been a working professional model maker in the industry for about 25 years and I picked up a few pointers from this series. You're never tool old or too cool to learn something new :) Thanks a lot.

This is a great set of tutorials to follow...model is much larger than what I do, but I always enjoy seeing a hobbiest sharing how they achieve such fantastic results...a lot of good tips in these vids...and you have beautiful family...thanks for sharing and you couldn't have picked a better subject for the tutorial...Jim.

At 57 and modeler since my father introduced me to this incredible hobby, I have seen the hobby and not only the tool, but the techniques come a very long way for the better. What you have taught us with this series of tutorials on using oils and pigments is a huge leap forward in this art form that I for one will never forget. Thank you so much for sharing this, it works beautifully. Another thing you have done to greatly advance the art is the formation of your company Industrial Mechanica. (think thats the right spelling) and I look forward to building many of those peices. I suppose I just wanted to thank you, because it is people like you that are keeping this hobby/art form relevant and alive!!!! Thank you so much.

Back in the late 70's -- I was a Film Booker for 20th Century-Fox (it had that 'hyphen' back then, btw) and I was located in the San Francisco Branch. I was fortunate to get to know some of the great folks at ILM when they were in San Rafael (Marin County) ...
... on my first visit, they were still in production on EMPIRE -- and the GREAT Brian Johnson showed me a few tricks with a Rapid-o-graph pen for outline 'plating' and good for weathering, etc.
Of my many times over there thru the years was on a 'Friends & Family Day' and this was when they were doing several films ... E.T., TREK II, POLTERGEIST -- and the oh so cool parts for me, (a scratch-built modelmaker since SILENT RUNNING in 1971 and the most wonderful VALLEY FORGE) was when I was taken into what my buddy Craig (matte dept) called 'The Toy Room' --
-- which was a rather large-ish, living-room-sized model storage and it was there I got to do an eyeball love-fest-this-close with not only the more recent Big Dog versions of the FALCON & STAR DESTROYER made for EMPIRE ... but then --
He took my then girlfriend and I onto the Motion Control Stage where, there -- sitting in the shadows was the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE that was made for STTMP a few years before ... and ILM was doing the effects this time. (fyi: Douglas Trumbull - my hero who I got to work for in the mid-80's at ShowScan -- the director of SILENT RUNNING & effects supervisor on CLOSE ENCOUTNERS, BLADE RUNNER, had done STTMP)
Anyway, there 'she' was -- NCC-1701 and as I slowly, lovingly approached her, I thought, 'Wait -- did ... did someone drop it??' Because there was this massive black 'ZAP' on the port side Engineering Hull. But, as I got closer, I could tell it was the most cool detailed Phaser hits -- it was truly a work of art.
Now, back to the Toy Room and the STAR WARS models -- in a word, Wowza. And looking at what Fichten Foo has down with his weathering on this series is truly ... a work of art.
So, allow me to humble pie it and say, watch his videos on the FALCON here -- his lessons are seamless and the outcome is ILM quality indeed.
Dear Mr. FF ... you have a new fan indeed.
SOMETHING JUST HIT ME .......... have you considered making the ART MAPS for these models ... whatever they may be -- say FALCON, TREK, BSG, etc. and then giving them, selling them, whatever for the DIGITAL MODELS for the various models online? It would most certainly be the top of the heap in terms of being the go-to site / guy / etc.
Most people who make the CGI MODELS are not as versed in the ART MAPS via Photoshop and the end ship tends to suffer.
Just a thought. In any event, we model types -- fans -- followers are indebted to you for this outstanding tutorial, amigo. It glows in the dark and makes our models that much better.
THANK YOU, FICHTEN FOO ! (You are 'The Man')
    Best --
    D.A.

Building the Model Space Falcon now. This is the best tutorial I've seen for oils, which is my preferred medium. Very very nice videos.

Great Tutorial set! really learned alot!
ever thought of using makeup applicators (eyeshadow spounge exp.) for the pigments instead of brushes?
for those of us without deep pockets, what sugestions for pigments and oils ??
Would love a rust/hairspray/salt tutorial, whenever you get a model that needs it!
    Thanks in advance!

Very nice. I agree that a lot of washes are overdone, but I think that a good subtle wash would have looked better on your falcon. Only becasue the space between the pannels look lighter than the pannels themselves.

love your work! can you use the same technique on a store bought falcon like for ex. the legacy falcon?

  • @enensis

Awesome really great finish on this bro, 1 question. Does the turpenoid not attack the acrylic without a gloss top coat? I tried using a similar technique using turps and oils but the paint underneath went all wierd, bubbling and cracking it also made the plastic very fragile. I used oil paint turps which stank like heck!!

After everything dries what do you use to seal all your paint work for these oil paints?

  • @cboyd1976

Can't thank you enough for this video. After you sealed the pigment did you do another clear coat over the entire kit or as that the final step?

Thank you very good work. Lots of tips here. I have the FM falcon and hope to start it soon. For now im just compiling an attack strategy. With respect, I have 1 criticism. The lovely artwork that comes with the model is not that of the studio model documented in many reviews so it is very easy just to copy. I have seen many bad weathering efforts of the back quarter @ Starship modeler because of this. I just think the kids out there needed to know. Your MF is looking good though..

Thanks for posting this tutorial, I' ve never had the idea to use oil paints like this. But one more thing: do I need to use a flat varnish in order to seal the model after these steps, or the pigment fixer will do the job?

@FichtenFoo I see does it not affect the first layer of oils you put down or does allowing it to dry 'lock it in place'?

  • @SteveSabbai
    @SteveSabbai 12 років тому

...you could do a very Light Wash then do your Discoloring layering over that?...
