This is horribly disturbing to me, all his life my big brother was my mom's scapegoat. At 7-8 yrs he was a bright student who passed all tests but didn't like taking notes or homework. Mom made him sign a contract- do his work or get spanked. Got up to 200 'licks' with a belt, often sent to bed with no dinner. Finally neighbors intervened and dad was made aware. Bout this time brother started mixing various poisons and poisoning frogs and cursing like a sailor. My sweet brother turned into a monster. In 2nd and 3rd grade. Mom wouldn't come home leaving 8,6,4,&2 yr olds in dark house to wander neighborhood. Again when confronted she'd dump us at the nursery 8am-10pm. They finally made her stop. My brother quit torturing animals after 6 months. Mom's behavior escalated after divorcing dad. Brother became an alcoholic who beat women and committed suicide by 40. So was it nature or nurture? The actions of this child are inexcusable but tragically so many lives were lost due to negligence by the parents and failure of the school. What a horrible tragedy.

So Ethan was texting his friend about killing baby birds, sending pics and videos to the friend. Told the friend about his plans of shooting up a school, kidnapping a girl, torturing and r*ping her. And this friend never told HIS parents or anyone for that matter? Additionally, the friends parents evidently didn't check their sons phone as well. Then you have the school. The teachers, counselor, Dean who was getting all of these red flags regarding Ethan, 8 months in advance to the shooting. Yet they too, did NOTHING. Schools are mandated reporters.
What is a mandated reporter? "state law requires that most professionals in education, health care, law enforcement and social work report suspected neglect or abuse."
Absolutely EVERYONE failed this 15 yr old kid. His journals and text messages prove he was screaming out for help.
I am listening to this after Jennifer Crumbley's (Mom) guilty verdict. After hearing what I have thus far, my mind has changed that yes the parents failed Ethan, were neglectful and abusive. Failed to get him proper mental health care. But I also blame Oxford school as well. The teachers were reporting to the Dean and the counselor. Those same teachers, after realizing the Dean and counselor were not taking action - the teachers could have called CPS and LE. Again, ALL failed this kid. Result? 4 children died. Several others injured.

EC and his friend were messaging for months before this horrid incident. Parents have to monitor their kids devices, even teens. My no1 rule when my kid got a phone, I have access and I frequently check it.
I wonder why the need for this hearing. The evidence is clear, he pled guilty. Is this closure for the victims? I feel its unnecessary. These witnesses and victims will have gone over this many times previously.

It’s an evidentiary hearing to determine if he will be charged life without parole due to him being a minor since minors usually cannot be charged as an adult. The judge needs to hear all the evidence of his crimes before determining.

He not only is who he is, but he has been this way all along. In another area of the ongoing testimony, and I don't remember exactly where, in the hours and hours I've watched, he himself relates that he realized that he was different from others, and that others didn't have the thoughts he did, when he said enthusiastically one time at recess that it would be great if the cars going by would explode and blow up the school, upsetting the adult he said this to. He was in a much earlier grade when that happened. There were many, many missed opportunities to intervene.

I get it, his parents sucked....it's why Jennifer is going to prison and James might be going right behind her. But this kid carefully planned this FOR A WHILE and enjoyed it and unless he has a come to Jesus moment, he's going to remain a threat to the free world. So the idea of giving him the opportunity to be paroled is atrocious.

I feel no pity for this boy, especially after the graphic description of the bird video. so don't mistake my irritance with the prosecution for sympathy for the defendent.
this female prosecutor, something about her I haven't liked from the beginning. maybe that smug look she wears or the things she didn't say regarding the victims and the fact that, like it or not, Ethan is a victim too.
I think she thought making a comment about her lack of binder would make the defense look unprepared but instead made her look more like petty and pretensious.
