madam, your description was so nice and i felt that i was watching the function in person. the specialty of hinduisim is that we don't worship our gods as mere statues. but as human beings which other religions fail to understand and make fun of our religion. even our tv are not so descriptive.
Madam Chiththirai thiruvizha started in 17th century by Thirumalai Naicker. Reason: Political Compulsion. 1.Madurai is dominated by Shaivites. The main communities are Devendrakula Vellalars and Devars. 2.Trichy is dominated by Sri Vaishnavites. The main communities are Kallars, Maravars, Chettiars. 3. Trichy was the capital of Madurai Kingdom till 1634. 4.There was a legend that Madurai Meenakshi appeared in Thirumalai Naicker's dream to shift the capital to Madurai. 5.But actual situation is Vijayanagara Empire ended at Roya Vellore, defeated by Golconda Sultans. 6.Europeans at Kayalpattinam waiting for the opportunity to attack Madurai. (Later Dutch attacked Tiruchendur and looted the treasures when Thirumalai Naicker engaged in war with Bijapur Sultans. When he come victorious, Dutch set fire the temple and taken the idol to ceylon- out of purview here) 7.Thirumalai Naicker, to safeguard Madurai Kingdom from Golconda/ Bijapur(North)/ Dutch/ Portuguese(South)- shifted the capital from Trichy to Madurai in 1634. He also strengthened Trichy, Dindigul Forts. 8. In order to maintain social harmony among various communities and religions, Thirumalai Naicker started Meenakshi ThirukKalyanam and Kallalagar festivals in Madurai and Kuldev/ Guardian deity worship in rural areas. 9.Thirumalai Naicker succeeded in his endeavour for uniting all and still is remembered by all communities for his administration. 10.Madurai remained capital of Madurai Naicker Kingdom till 1695 and shifted back to Trichy by Rani Mangammal. However Regent Queen used to stationed at Madurai during Meenakshi Thirukkalyanam and Kallalagar festival. This is historic update from my side on this special occasion.
I am a believer in God and do my devotional practices at home every day with nama japa, stotra chanting etc. But, what I see is that the Tamil people spend crores on wasteful expenses for these Tiruvizhas, especially flowers. Many times the garlands are 3-4 times the size of the deity and need some support. Tamil Nadu is a state with a suicide rate in Top 5 states consistently for many years. That means there is so much distress among people. Why spend so much money in wasteful manner. Right now, I am helping an Engineering student to buy laptop. His father is an auto driver and struggling to pay for his studies.
Mookkaruppu Por or War of Noses: Madam, There were two Mookkaruppu Por. Whatever you mentioned is Mookkaruppu Por 2- fought by relatives of Madurai and Mysore (both were feaudatories to Vijayanagara Empire) Now both the accounts: Revenge Wars of Mysore: Mysore and Tanjavur were loyal to the Vijayanagara Emperors and they wanted to take revenge on Sultans and on betrayed Madurai Naickers. Revenge War of Noses 1: Muluvai attack on Chandragiri Bisaya naicker, a polygar of Harapanayakanahalli, present Mulbagal (T) Kolar (D) of Karnataka, Waged a war against the sultan of Chandragiri fort in which he and his army killed every one inside the fort. (there is a myth that only the nose rings collected from dead Muslim women were 3 full bamboo bucket, which is sealed in 2 stone locker in Kurudumalle Village, Karnataka) Later after the death of sulthan it subsequently came under Mysore rule. Revenge War of Noses 2: Mysore attack on Madurai In 1656, Mysore attacked Madurai. The army invaded Salem, Coimbatore and Dindigul. The Mysore soldiers had gone about their task of cutting off noses of soldiers. They sent back to Mysoreseveral gunny bags filled with noses of soldiers. Dindigul was ruled by a commander Kumara Muthu Naicker and he and Ramanathapuram ploygar defeated Mysore forces. Madurai forces drive them back to their territory and did the same thing to the opponents. End Note: There is another Revenge War of Failed Marital Alliance which lead to the End of Tanjavur Naicker Kingdom in 1673.
