A few years ago, WhatifAltHist claimed Mansa Musa - a man who singlehandedly crashed the value of gold in the Egyptian market - actually wasn't particularly rich. He said he had sources to prove this, but provided none in his comments, video, or description. It's nice to see some things stay the same.
Well, as much as this guy is a crackhead, he's not entirely wrong, there is every reason to believe the records about mansa musas visit to egypt are massively exaggerated, because while egyptian tax records and the like from that time do show a short, but noticeable inflation in the area he visited, it was FAAAAAR from an economic crash, or even long lasting. Which is still impressive, imagine you could clearly measure increased inflation in a country today after a rich buisnessmen visited. Claiming that guy wasn't "particularly rich" would be kind of stupid.
@@authomat6236 fair enough point there, it makes sense that some of the primary sources may have exaggerated things. I, however, think WhatifAltHist's claim is made even more amusing by the fact that Mansa Musa's hajj was not even very unique among those of Sudanic Emperors - Askia Mohammed is also noted for his lavish hajj spending while Idris alooma, though hailing from bornu in the central Sudan (which was significantly less prosperous in terms of gold wealth), still spent large. The legacies such men left in Egypt are clear, for even in the 19th century, some travellers claimed that west and central African hajjis were commonly assumed to be wealthy emperors, even though by that point it had become custom for even the sons of nobles to leave on hajj with little more than the clothes on their backs and, maybe, some servants.
Not to mention both Italy and Portugal had a competition to find the city of Timbuktu. Why would a “not particularly rich” man be of such interest to two of the biggest European empires at the time?

Found something: **Maine** passed a law banning rapid fire devices (bump stocks, gat cranks, binary triggers, etc). On the other side of the country, California passed a bill supporting instruction in gun safety and maintenance, like oiling your weapon for example. The fear addicts had merged the two bills together into some conflated story about how it was now a felony to oil your gun in California because a rusty gun doesn't work as well as a maintained rifle (reminder that oil is not a rapid fire device and the bill in question is a few thousand miles away). I explained all of this to the person who'd told me to go watch a UA-cam video full of misinformation, and how he didn't have to worry one teeny tiny bit about going to prison over oil, and he replied "Yeah, BUT THEY COULD!!!!". (Of course, the funniest/weirdest bit was hearing conservatives talk about your city being a lawless post-apocalyptic wasteland, when you're still going to the park and buying gelato like usual.) Another thought: I might've not gone through my anti-SJW chud period if a) my high school and college had addressed intersectionality when talking about oppression and prejudice, and b) my high school and college had taught about redlining, the GI Bill, and other residual effects of discriminatory laws and policies. This is an idea from the book The WEIRDest People in the World. The book examines how Westerners are psychologically different from the rest of the world due to our culture which has dramatically shifted since the introduction of the banning of cousing marriage by the Catholic Church. @@scottduncan92 Maybe... But that seems like a massive stretch. Like even just the term westerners is a very very loose label. @@thibaultl1956 When I say Westerner in this case I mean those countries that are specifically Christian, whether Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox. One of the pillars of right-wing psychology is being unaware they're mistaking their subjectivity for objectivity. A lot of leftists do it too, but for us it often creates more ideological dissonance. We are supposed to see the world from multiple perspectives, and when we can't, we perceive it as a failure, if we're self-aware enough. For them it's usually 100% egosyntonic. They see the world as it is, they believe. Also, pls, for the love of god, enough with this simple-ass linear-causality chicken-egg nature-nurture bullshit. Go read the wikipedia page on epigenetics, and maybe throw in some systems theory, and let all this inane and pedantic debate evaporate. There is no nature without nurture, and no nurture without nature. Spending centuries debating whether it's one or the other is just intellectual masochism at this point.
Once had a conversation with an alt righter guy about horror films and I said we could agree to disagree on a particular film, as we all have different opinions. He said "no. I'm right. Key point is in the third line "...if we're self-aware enough..." But all in all, it's a valid take imho... On the other hand, one could argue that a left-wing pillar is that objectivity simply doesn't exist. lol?

I've honestly never understood the "Anti-SJW" mindset, not even as a teenager during gamergate. Like sure, blue haired ladies having a "meltdown" about insert problem here isn't exactly the best look optically, but their points were usually right. My take, as someone who still considers "sjw" to be an issue. We shouldnt stop at optics when we consider how destructive they can be. Left-wing social movements in the Internet era are guided mostly by "who has the most retweets". Once we acknowledge that, we have to understand that those people end up defining the movement whether we like it or not. And what brings more likes and retweets than anything? Extremism. Its something we've seen for a while now and it has been talked about in this channel for a long time. I'll bring a couple examples to the table. Third-wave feminism was supposed to be a breakthrough from the full-on manhating of second-wave and trying to find a way for feminism to ease the effect of the pernicious side of male culture on men so the cycle can be broken. This is axiomatically good. However, actual man-hating never left and became a sort of "meme" that went unchallenged on the online left for long enough to fester and become unironic since the people with the worst takes were the ones bringing more attention to the movement and the way to "succeed" was by being even more extreme on your hatred. That opened the door to people like TERFs, who might be top contenders for man-hating people in the championship, to have a BIG voice on the feminist movement, and very few people would voice their discontent for fear of being branded a misogynist by the online left. Translate that to, lets say, black people, and you get your Blackhammers and your Flowers. We call them "wokescolds" nowadays, but they have always been there and they have always been a problem, not just because they make their mission to gatekeep on movements and hate on the different by doing exactly what was done to "their group", but because they DO reinforce the destructive alt-right stereotypes that make leftists look like maniacs who just want to destroy and do to others what was done to them. I'd say that's a problem for the left. I do sincerely consider that they are detrimental to any movement they claim to belong as tankies would be to leftism.
@@VicStrange9 Generally true, indeed. It's not that they're what defines leftism or progressivism. It's that they're this sort of pervasive tumor on the movement that people just leave in place because "Eh, it's not that bad, they're just a bunch of people on twitter". And then they aren't. Remember Gamergate? It was legitimately good faith in SOME sections of the movement for like a month or so, then the chuds kind of just rolled on in and the more progressive folks just gave ground because they didn't want to be associated with those guys or something, and the alt-right took it over. That's what happened to Pepe too. And to a bunch of other shit. Because very sensitive people who were more concerned with being morally pure than meaningfully fighting the right let them just have things that had been "tainted". Ironically, the same thing happened to the concept of anti-SJW, which was briefly just "Hey, maybe progressive shouldn't mean reactionary malding over white people and men existing", and THEN took this hard right turn down the dumbass pit. That kind of dumb reactionary bullshit is great at one thing. Galvanizing their counterparts on the right. Stormfront and pol were a joke no one cared about. Until they weren't. Reactionaries feed reactionaries, and that's kind of bad actually. My take is that we should have a push toward better intellectual rigor and leftist positions informed by critical thinking rather than just projecting people's unresolved life traumas onto... everything. We should have ethical positions that are arrived at analytically rather than intuitively, because when everyone is working through generations of systemic and individual trauma, the resulting hypervigilance does not lead to good positions.
I love both of these replies and have no disagreement. I should've made it more clear that the reactionaries in the Social Justice sphere are the problem moreso than the ideas, as that was the point I was trying to get at. My take is I am absolutely in favor of more intellectual rigor and less identity politics and trauma politics. Can you use trauma and experience to have a more personal, insightful and informed perspective into an issue? Absolutely. Can you also inject trauma and experience into politics to silence/gatekeep and even harass? Unfortunately. I think the former is something we should embrace, while the latter is something the left definitely needs to work on Edit: better grammar, punctuation

It’s been awhile but I’ll see if I can reach into the well of an earlier self and explain: a lot of gamers were nerds and social outcasts who had been bullied through the 90’s and early aughts. We found escape and friends in video games and other nerd hobbies but were largely white and middle to upper middle class (just at the bottom of the pecking order socially). At one point politicians and even much of the MSM was pushing the video games cause violence narrative. Gamers, games journalists, and the industry at large pushed back and won. Gaming was a core part of lives and identities. It had provided an escape from people who literally made life a living hell through physical and verbal abuse at school. I don’t know if you’ve ever been at the bottom of the bullying totem pole but it makes life feel like a living hell. As the years went on gaming grew and became more diverse but it also became clear their were problems in many of these communities particularly for women. At the same time the gaming press was rolling over. Old school DND nerds who built computers to play games line unreal, quake, and many others were replaced by more professional journalists Aka I think kids looking for jobs out of school. Some were gamers and others maybe not but either way the perspective they brought came with criticisms of how games and gamers were. Remember this is also the height of pop feminism click bait. So you have places promoting content like Anita Sarkeesisn whose criticisms were often so wrong they involved mistakes you’d have to never have played games to get wrong. We had article after article about how X in gaming racist or Y in gaming is sexist. Much of it was awful clickbait looking for hate views. When the ex of some a pretty un noteworthy game developer posted on something awful but what he felt was abuse he also revealed an interconnected social web of indie developers, publishers, and games journalists. Much was wrong like a certain kotaku writer never reviewed the game of the dev he allegedly slept with but did feature her “game” (it was a choose your own adventure short story really) in an article including the headlined screen shot. People began digging into Dev and journalists alike finding that shit like roommates were reviewing each others games and one of the investors in fez was also part of the team that would ultimately give it an award. People were posting personal screenshots and information they scraped revealing a lot of the indie scene was incestuous. Even some devs spoke out. Of course there was also some horrible sexism. (Although 5 guys burgers and fries meme is still kinda funny to me) The problem is the two elements were difficult separate and the threads about it were nuked. This caused even more backlash. You have to remember too that the game journo industry was highly tied to publishers/devs even at the AAA level and I think it was the ending to a popular series that caused some backlash and journalists who used to feel like fellow gamers attacked gamers for being “entitled”. This was a big event and the ending was eventually updated but it’s another example of the bumps in the road. So when it was discovered that games journalists had an email list across competing companies called game journo pros where they all talked about messaging around the same time ten different outlets released articles declaring “gamers are dead” it wasn’t just an attack on a cherished part of our identity but a conspiracy to do so. The worst part though is it was Breitbart who reported on this Game Journo Pros email list under the tagline of one Milo Yappydappyopolos(yeah I spelled it wrong). As it went on gamers tried for awhile to get advertisements pulled from certain sites to punish the outlets but they had mainstream reporting that it was just a bunch of evil woman haters and only right wing outlets like reason even attempted to give honest opinions on the situation. Milo would do subsequent articles but all of them focused on individuals (usually cis or trans women) and were largely personal attacks rather than real revelations on issues in games journalism. Despite people like total biscuits trying to focus stuff back on the real issues like when gamergate people found out a PC Gamer journo reporting on Ubisoft was married to someone on their marketing team. It became more abs more about identity and more reactionary. It was hard at times to see how detached from reality you could be but from our perspective you have to understand this was just like the violence in video game era except instead of being school shooters we were racist and sexist. The fact is there’s some truth to both sides. Gamers at large were unfairly maligned because we had been forced into these white male enclaves by our hobbies and treatment but it was wider society including inequality that made them mostly white and male. We were even If often behaving badly to women or using racial slurs as casual insults just as much victims. It’s also true to some degree there was coordinated attack and smear on gamers as an identity. That games abs gamers were often hyperbolically maligned as sexist or racist. You can see how it wasn’t hard to sell the larger SJW narrative to the gamergate community that destroying video games with diversity initiatives was just one stop for a larger cabal of evil SJW’s. You can also see why Steve Bannon got Breitbart involved.
I've been following this whatifallthis dude for a couple of years and all he does are alt-history videos with an extremely poor argumentation. Even he manages to fuck up something as easy as alt-history. What's funny to me is that his audience seems to be a bit more reasonable than him, which is not hard to be honest.
his videos are just entreteinment, for his predictions, I'm not going to say they are good, but at least they are more than just a random map of changing borders with a title like "the world in 2100" and no speaking or anything, so yeah, his predictions are entretaining, there's an audence for that, andhe at least tries to give a story that could be, although most likley won't
I was in his audience too, but no longer after he spoke of Russia possibly invading NATO after Ukraine and pushing all the way to Vistula river with little resistance. Without any sources. WOW

They were so ugly and full of text up until late high school, and then a few people figured out how to really do it(I wasn't one of them, I didn't learn until college). Nothing is more boring that watching someone read off their presentation in front of the class when you can see every word they're going to say.
That man made 45 minutes of pure high-speed gish gallop. That is impressive! I especially liked the walls of text on most of the slides. /s And he can do *multiple videos* like that? Jesus.
I love how out of the 3 models he chose to represent how beauty isn't cultural 1 was north indian (who are essentially the same as white people) and 1 was argentine (who are mostly white) Not that it makes a difference since the fashion, modelling and make-up industries have been largely internationalised under a western cultural hegemony
The part about race having nothing to do with wealth inequality made me scream. Of course race doesn't inherently have to do with the wealth disparity people face, to argue otherwise would be an argument in support of genetic determinism. Race only has to do with wealth disparity because our ancestors saw people who had different skin colors then they did and decided to enslave them, drag them off to live in an entirely different part of the world and treat them as property. Racial differences don't inherently account for wealth disparity, countless years of subhuman treatment accounts for that.
I would really like for this guy to show this video to any of his college professors and get their opinions on it. I also love how he mentions echo chambers but clearly never talks to people that don’t share his viewpoints. Projection is a helluva drug.
I was going to joke about how this Whatif-guy seems to think that memes, Ben Garrison comics and randow jpegs are "research". Then his entire video was just that.
When you’re of the mind that you’ve, “engaged with all the arguments,” because you, “took some gender studies courses,” you just kinda come to assume that the first conclusion you draw about literally anything is just true by default. OH, I remember seeing a video from this guy once. He claimed that Ancient Egypt was the first communist society, with the logic that the state built all those pyramids and communism is when the state does things.
It's as stupid as claiming any society prior to the Renaissance was Capitalist because money and trade. Like, that alone does not a Capitalist economic system make!
No they were VERY clearly a monarchy and theocratic. This guy I don't even know how you can come to that conclusion except maybe having 0 knowledge about what communism is
@@DataLal Actually, if I recall correctly, that was pretty much the argument he was making. The "what if" premise was what would Europe be like if the mediteranian cultures were dominated by ancient Egypt rather than the Hellenic culture. Three guesses as to what his conclusions of how Europe would look like today were in this what if scenario.
Planned economy was common in ancient times. This guy just went straight saying that this is communism. Equality was not a thing before, and society is operated on hierarchy, and not even atheist.

This entire video (especially the segment around 21:10) reminds me of a high school moment that I'll forever hold near and dear to my heart: the time I was grouped with our 10th grade history class' token preppy conservative girl to make a presentation on the Israel-Palestine conflict. This was back during the late 2000s, so it was even harder then to find balanced reporting on Palestine online (or any information at all, really). The conservative girl was, of course, opposed to even including any notes on Palestine. So I ended up doing all of the Palestine research myself. Eventually, our substitute teacher for the day swung by to check on how our project was coming along - specifically, if we were able to find much information on Palestine. Before I could say anything, my partner replied, "Oh, we couldn't find anything. So we decided to leave Palestine out." To which the sub teacher responded, "Then you need to look harder." And she walked away. My friends and I were struggling to hold back laughter, and the girl's face turned beet red from embarrassment as she stared at her computer screen. That was my first experience with a real-time conservative self-own. If anything, this moment likely helped solidify my beliefs; if I hadn't seen my insufferable classmate get shut down in six words, I very well could have set down the path of the wishy-washy apolitical. It's clear that "SJW" is just a stand-in for "people I don't like" and/or "people who don't agree with me"... and I'm pretty sure I didn't need to say "and/or" because his Venn diagram of the 2 is likely just a single circle.
Earlier the guy said racism isn't a big deal anymore because we don't have segregation anymore, but later, near the end, he says "social justice" states have bad segregation.

I watched a few Whatifalthist's videos in the past on his political views and I'd say this : - He's a fan of Jonathan Haidt and does believe a fair amount of people with leftist ideas are indeed decent people as a result, but he 'expanded' Haidt's thoughts on the moral foundations to suggest there's a neo-left-wing group that essentially 'constructed' their own faith and are ramping up the 'purity value' of their beliefs. This is the group he recognizes as SJWs - This last portion is **not an uncommon viewpoint in right wing circles.** - He's very pro 'Laissez faire' capitalism but likes and spoke positively of various social democracies like the scandinavian/nordic states in Europe which is likely why he self-classifies himself as center-right; basically his belief is hardcore capitalists do disregard and forget certain factors that go into successfulness and that they underestimate inequality and class - He does not speak much of sexual minorities in these videos so I genuinely don't know what the viewpoint is there - Basically it seems to him SJW-leftism is a mixture of the group Vaush calls wokescolds, Hollywood criticism-whiners, and very out-there Twitter takes. Again, this feels like a very popular view of the term in right wing circles. They do disagree on how common and universal this group is in terms of 'left wing' perspectives though.

@@authomat6236 fair enough point there, it makes sense that some of the primary sources may have exaggerated things.

A few years ago I kept running into people repeating the claim _"Commiefornia just made it a FELONY to OIL YOUR GUN!"_ and ignoring the sillyness of pretending California is somehow Communist, I asked one of the nutters for the bill in question. Instead, I was repeatedly told to search for some guy's channel to get his opinion about it. I told them I wanted to read the bill, not get someone else's opinion on what he thought it said. I was met with just insults, so off to google I went. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Conservative Integrity.
More digging, broaden the search.

“Christianity also created individuality by banning cousin marriage”
This is genuinely one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.
This is an idea from the book The WEIRDest People in the World. The book examines how Westerners are psychologically different from the rest of the world due to our culture which has dramatically shifted since the introduction of the banning of cousing marriage by the Catholic Church. It is then hypothesized that this eventually led to our very individualistic society, among other things.
@@scottduncan92 Maybe... But that seems like a massive stretch. Like even just the term westerners is a very very loose label. You could probably ask ten people about who counts as a westerner and get dozens of different and contradictory answers.
I guess it's comforting that the idea didn't completely come out of nowhere.
@@thibaultl1956 When I say Westerner in this case I mean those countries that are specifically Christian, whether Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox. In the book The author describes how the longer a society or city was exposed to the ban on cousin marriage, then the more pronounced the effect on them would be in terms of individualism (rather than collectivism), analytical thinking (rather than holistic thinking), and the formation of organizations that were not family based, such as guilds, charter towns, and universities (rather than clans or family run organizations).

I've honestly never understood the "Anti-SJW" mindset, not even as a teenager during gamergate. Like sure, blue haired ladies having a "meltdown" about insert problem here isn't exactly the best look optically, but their points were usually right. Just because they're cringe/annoying doesn't mean they're always wrong. I guess I'm not a big enough piece of shit to understand getting your kicks by "triggering" people anyways, that mentality is the same as a middle school bully and just makes you look sad and pathetic the older you get
I will forever be grateful and relieved that no matter how close I got, I never fell down the Alt-Right Pipeline
I think the former is something we should embrace, while the latter is something the left definitely needs to work on

It shows us that there are in fact issues with the concept of sjws and that we have the potential to grow beyond past mistakes. 2-3 years ago Felix's comment and mine would have been flamed and we'd be basically considered on par with the guy in the video.
(Although 5 guys burgers and fries meme is still kinda funny to me)
The problem is the two elements were difficult separate and the threads about it were nuked.
I mean if you want to make even somewhat convincing alt-history, you do need to know some history in the first place, which this guy clearly does not.
his videos are just entreteinment, for his predictions, I'm not going to say they are good, but at least they are more than just a random map of changing borders with a title like "the world in 2100" and no speaking or anything, so yeah, his predictions are entretaining, there's an audence for that, andhe at least tries to give a story that could be, although most likley won't
I was in his audience too, but no longer after he spoke of Russia possibly invading NATO after Ukraine and pushing all the way to Vistula river with little resistance. Without any sources.

@@DataLal Actually, if I recall correctly, that was pretty much the argument he was making.
- He's a fan of Jonathan Haidt and does believe a fair amount of people with leftist ideas are indeed decent people as a result, but he 'expanded' Haidt's thoughts on the moral foundations to suggest there's a neo-left-wing group that essentially 'constructed' their own faith and are ramping up the 'purity value' of their beliefs. This is the group he recognizes as SJWs
- This last portion is **not an uncommon viewpoint in right wing circles.**
- He's very pro 'Laissez faire' capitalism but likes and spoke positively of various social democracies like the scandinavian/nordic states in Europe which is likely why he self-classifies himself as center-right; basically his belief is hardcore capitalists do disregard and forget certain factors that go into successfulness and that they underestimate inequality and class
- He does not speak much of sexual minorities in these videos so I genuinely don't know what the viewpoint is there
- Basically it seems to him SJW-leftism is a mixture of the group Vaush calls wokescolds, Hollywood criticism-whiners, and very out-there Twitter takes. Again, this feels like a very popular view of the term in right wing circles. They do disagree on how common and universal this group is in terms of 'left wing' perspectives though.
