Finally Addressing The Honda Navi’s Transmission Issue…

- It's finally time to address the weird issue that my Honda Navi's been having, shaking and shuddering under initial acceleration, with only 800 miles on the clock. I think I have it narrowed down to a clutch issue, so I bought a new NCY clutch kit, and figured I might as well replace the stock variator with an upgraded variator kit from Malossi while I'm in there! If everything goes according to plan, this should not only resolve all the problems I've had with my Navi's transmission, but also make it quicker AND get a higher top speed!
Edit: After filming this I was so impressed by the improvement that I decided to upgrade the springs inside of the new clutch as well…and HOLY CRAP it’s like a whole new bike! If you want to do the clutch and variator shown in this video, you NEED to do the springs too! Check out that video here- • Is THIS The BEST $15 Y...

If you’re impressed by how much this clutch & variator kit improved the Navi, wait til you see what this $15 mod did to the performance afterwards! 😳 ua-cam.com/video/_qYeziastmE/v-deo.html
Did you find that replacing the clutch fixed that shaking issue? My wifes navi seems to be doing something similar, I uploaded a short to show what its doing, the whole front end shakes but nothing is loose.
@@CricketandBee I just watched your short and it’s dang near EXACTLY what mine was doing, and the new clutch did completely fix my issue! If you want to try a free remedy first though, try taking some rough grit sand paper and sanding the inside of the clutch bell housing to see if that helps at all. After replacing my clutch I realized that my stock bell housing was a bit glazed which was causing the clutch to slip right as it engaged, which caused the shaking. So roughing up the housing may help the clutch grab and solve your issue, otherwise swapping the clutch should do the trick! Good luck man, hopefully that helps!
@LifeOfBurch Thanks man, it is still under warranty, and we did buy an extended one (half price, ha ha) so probably gonna take it in at some point. Both local dealerships haven't had much experience with them yet so was looking for any ideas to throw out to them and came across your video.
Burch, as someone who doesn't have a Navi, I'm way too invested in this.
Haha let’s gooo!! Navi keeping the people on the edge of their seats! 😂
Fr
What a legend, great to see you're willing to tackle a mechanical issue instead of throwing it aside like many others nowadays. Good work, homie!
Thanks brotha!! I appreciate you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
"many others" in case you haven't noticed society is like at least 4 generations deep in pure degeneracy. 😂
The laziness of society used to bother me until i realized it's just job security until i realized when they get older and aren't prepared they are just going to demand government take my money and give it to them like they already are through government programs. We need less safety laws and more natural selection.
I absolutely love the Navi content! Please don’t stop. More upgrades for the motor next!
I’ve wondered what the problem was from
Back when you posted the video showing the problem. Good to see that it’s fixed and that you were able to fix it yourself.
I'm late to this party but I'm glad you took it upon yourself to fix it. It ads to your mechanical skill and deep knowledge of the Navi. I hope this video helped others diagnose the same issue with their bikes. Awesome job man 👍
Fair play in tackling that sort of issue. I certainly wouldn’t be that brave. Nice work!
Thanks dude! I wasn’t super confident going into it having never done anything with CVT before, but it ended up being a breeze for the most part! 🤘🏻
Thanks for sharing...I wasn't expecting the inside of the CVT to be so simple
Good to see you taking the deep dive into working on your transmission. You just save yourself a lot of money.
Happy new years fam 🤟great update repair let's ride Navi time 🦾🚀☝🤟
Been looking forward to this! Navi Wrenchin time!!!
Yessirrr!! I love that I can work on it in a “heated garage” unlike the Rebels 😂😂😂
Nice vídeo bro, well eddited, u deserve more views
Great video Burch !!! 🤙🏽
I can’t stop thinking of getting a Grom or a Navi Nice install 😎
The fact that that stock clutch nut came off with ease may have been an issue there was no resistance when you back it off it's crazy that Honda doesn't put any loctite on those nuts 😮
Like watching you work on the Navi! Would love to see you max it out with current upgrades available.. not that there are that many.. but someone needs to do a GY6 swap and a stretch on one of these, that would be awesome. Oh, and you should totally drag race the girlfriend.
Benchmarking the acceleration before an after is very interesting. The effort is appreciated.
Is there a break-in procedure for a new clutch?
Hey Burch one thing I’ve noticed watching your swap and every other one on UA-cam is everyone else is pairing the new bell housing on top of the old one. Your way makes the most sense. Why would you want both of them on there? To me you only need the one and obviously you want to reduce weight not add it. Just something I’ve noticed and I’m not sure why everyone else is getting this step “wrong”. Love your videos!
Navi race! Yes! You each have to switch off as well, so that you can eliminate rider differences in which bike is better.
But I'm definitely glad to see that you got this done, though! Bravo!
Seeing the content on Navi makes me miss Maryland haha. I moved to Texas from Baltimore a couple of years ago and a Navi would just to be too dangerous on the roads here :( Love the content bro.
Thanks for the love dude! 🙏🏻 The Navi is fun, but definitely more of a “city dweller” or around town scoot, so I can see why it wouldn’t work the best out there. Even the road where I did these tests is a road I wouldn’t normally ride on since the speed limit is 50. I try to stick to 40-45mph roads tops on the Navi, especially since people are expecting to do 5-10 over most times.
I moved to Florida from Baltimore 4.5 years ago.
Great wintertime content. That impact wrench made it look so easy. I need one of those. Beats wrestling the ratchets. I too battle the biker condo life. My tenere is the finest piece of furniture, just don't let the neighbors know, lol. Thanks
I used to fly fuel powered RC helicopters and we had centrifugal clutches like that. The wear on the inside of the bell housing at 6:30 sure did not look uniform when you lifted it up for a second there. Could not tell if that was uneven wear or just reflections. If uneven wear, I bet that something was wrong with the bell housing. Seems like when clutch was engaging, it was skipping as it was engaging the tight spots then slipping off again instead of smoothly engaging till locking in. Good that you fixed it.
My Malossi racing clutch is tunable. I got rid of the dreaded clutch shudder with the new clutch and the Malossi bell. The Dr Pulley sliders instead of rollers were great too. After the install of the new clutch parts I never looked back, and that was 30000 miles ago. Yeh you read that right, I'm rolling on a Honda Reflex that just turned 55000 miles and the clutch parts were installed at 21000 miles. I was so tired of the stock Honda clutch shudder on take off. No worries about the Malossi parts, they have proven to be extremely durable with very little wear. I change my drive belt every spring time so I get to see the parts once a year. Roughly 10000 miles per year on the scooter traveling all over my state of Illinois and all the surrounding states. No problems so far with Malossi, good stuff!!
Cool video! I love my new navi so far
Yo Burch! Sup dude, funny video. Navi is lookin good. You should totally race Nina. Happy '23.
🤘🐐🤘
Yo dude! Happy new year my guy!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Man you got me hooked on this whole Navi series. It's so weird because I have (or had) absolutely no interest in a Navi at all - not to own one, not to ride one and certainly not to watch videos about it.. but here we are, lmao, I'm watching your videos and loving it.
It has made me at least _consider_ getting a Navi, or two Navis, rather: one for me and one for the wife when we move to an area more suitable for riding a slow bike. In this area (Texas) I'd get run over by some angry yokel in a lifted pavement princess truck if I held traffic up, lol.
so did you end up getting one? I'm looking at getting one... I just need to get my motorcycle license
You really need to change the belt to get the full benefit of the upgrade. Nice vid.
You can definitely play with the rollers if you want a more ideal rpm for high speed :)
Definitely race Nina on the Navi. Only on the safe, secluded raceway. Supposedly it's not the clutch pads that get glazed it's the metal on the cover gets ultra polished. Freshening the clutch cover surface with the Emery cloth or 400 grit sandpaper helps acceleration.
Great tip. Thanks
The clutch/ variator is the first thing to change on the Navi, it's where you get the most gain. Quick acceleration and 56mph is probably what most people want anyway. Need more, intake, exhaust and jets (maybe a better carb)... After the only thing to do is a big bore if one ever shows up.
The Navi would have been perfect if it was a 125cc EFI. If ever a 125 EFI conversion shows up I may go for it, it will help to make it more livable.
This is not a cvt issue, sir. My suspicion is confirmed by two facts. First, you lose power as the engine warms up and second, you have trouble staring it up. The upgrade may arguably improve the performance, but the main issue is the Valve Clearance and the oil you use. Trust me!
The Navi looks so cool, wish we had them in Germany
That looked pretty much a not too difficult upgrade to the transmission. AT 1,800 bike it makes more sense to buy one of these new than to find a small bike used. As, although a real motorcycle, this looks to provide all the fun of riding but in a smaller and easy to ride package this old guy wants.
The clutch didn't really improve performance, except for the juddering issue. (You might have been able to fix that by scuffing up the pads and/or bell housing with 80-grit black sandpaper.) The whole variator assembly didn't really improve your performance. Essentially all that makes the difference are those weights. Yup. The weights. I installed a set of 13g weights that cost about 30 bucks IIRC. That did it. Yeah, I'm cheap, but then again it's an $1800 bike. Cheap bike, cheap fixes! ;)
OK Mr. know it all. The lighter clutch reduces rotational mass. Go look up how that improves performance, so you put out proper info.
@@ernieschatz3783cry about it
Good video 👍
Yes I would like to see you race the stock navi with Nina
Do you have any personal preferences/recommendations to cold weather gear vs summer?
good work, I bet you're glad you decided to fix the issue rather than trash the bike. Ever worry about any drips on your carpet though? I might put some cardboard under the bikes just in case they leak anything :)
Woah woah woah- just cause I fixed it doesn’t mean I won’t still trash it! 😂 I’m hoping that I can get to play in the snow with this bad boy if we get any decent accumulation this year! And honestly this carpet is so thrashed that I’m kinda hoping it gets messed up and gives me a reason to rip it up haha I’d looove to do polished concrete in the living room some day for an industrial feel!
I’m buying a Navi now 😂😂. I love the content
Can’t believe I wasn’t subscribed to your channel my bad
I’m subbed now though!!
Ayy let’s go!! Thanks dude! 😎🤘🏻
It would be cool if they made it clear cover so you could see all of the new components spinning around, kind of like a Ducati with a dry clutch!!
They have them
Very helpful
The navi is the first real bike I feel like I could handle outside of scooters. It's tempting to want to get my motorcycle learner's permit and get one of these as they seem much easier to work on than a real bike too, very similar to the metropolitan
Do it dude! You’re exactly right, these are the PERFECT step up from a scooter. My girlfriend learned lots of her riding skills on her Navi, then translated those skills to her Rebel 300. Navis are the perfect stepping stone into “real” bikes and they’re so cheap and easy to work on!
I wish other big names made stuff like a navi in this price bracket. Even if someone made one that cost a little more but had EFI to start nicer in cold places and with modern gas
Unfortunately some of the links now show page 404 not found... can ive found the clutch but is there any chance you can find another link for the malossi variatior kit?
@lifeofburch how much did the stock clutch bell weight? Curious.
Which app do you use for measuring the 0-30 and 0-40?
so are all the new navi have issues like the brown one you bought? I am looking to buy one brand new from Honda dealer near me but I don't want to if it has issues??
Is there anything you can modify on the Navi that will make it go faster?
You amaze me!
🧡🧡🧡
Would 20x15 sliders fit in the Malossi variator?
My guess why you needed a clutch in 800 miles is because previous owner did burnouts with it...
Nice work
Thanks brotha! 😄🤘🏻
Those clutch pads looked bad on the ends. Chipping away from not engaging correctly? I did a lot of CVT work when I had my Ruckus back in the day. Slightly heavier weights will give you a little more top end and once you get your weights dialed in the slider style weights will maximize how far your variator can open up.
On starting and running issues, check your airbox to make sure it is sealing/closed up correctly. A leak into it will throw off your jetting. I eventually opened up my airbox with a 3x4 cut out and a rain shield and rejetted. That was my Ruckus days. Looking at the Navi and the price point, I'm thinking it's a beefed up Ruckus?
Continued good luck in your Navi adventures!
Okay that's dope af!!
This thing’s a ripper now!! (kinda…) 😂🤘🏻
LifeOfBurch In the previous video you said it was still under warranty. Why did you not try to go through the warranty first? Also what was the apron cost of the upgraded parts in this video?
Do you still continue to have starting issues after changing the clutch?
Hey Burch, what app are you using to record your speeds?
Need to upgrade the gear ratio. I haven't found the parts needed for the Navi. Does anybody know if they're available?
outstanding!
Thanks!! 😎🤘🏻
i have a scarabeo 181 cc it did that studder with the clutch i had cvt full service it reduced it a lot but still there a bit i decided to leave it as the top end is peppy and i don't want to alter that.
Nice job
Some quality content here ;)
Thanks dude!! 🙌🏻🤘🏻
Now we can do the AC to DC conversion kit and install LEDs. Much safer to have the lights on all the time and not powered by the engine RPM.
You got the ncy clutch with the red springs that are 2000 rpm. SO that takes 2000 rpm for the clutch to start spreading out to engage with the clutch drum. Should have got the one with blue springs instead which are 1000 rpm. Quicker engagement and take off speed. Also the malossi contra spring is a higher rpm spring than the stock contra spring, its better with stock contra. You can just buy the blue ncy springs and install in the clutch. Now you should also take off that horrible air box and just put on a simple cone or pod filter on the carb for even better response. Cheap and easy stuff. Of course exhaust is a given for a little more power and better sound.
Thanks for the heads up! I had no idea that you could get different springs for the NCY clutch to set the engagement RPMs. I did notice that it takes longer to grab now and thought it was something I’d just have to get used to. I’m definitely gonna grab some of the blue ones! Past that she’s staying stock for now. That was always the plan until I had to do this out of necessity. Of course that’s always how it starts, right? 😂
@@LifeOfBurch The blue springs will make a world of difference for like 10 bucks or whatever. I stopped saying im gonna leave stuff stock lol. My Navi has 2 grand in mods and im about done with it. My Honda ruckus has 5 grand in custom mods and now my Honda CB300R that I just got 3 weeks ago already has 1500 in mods. Ive yet to meet anything I like stock. Anyways enjoy.
where's the links to the upgrades you got for this
Normally when doing all that it's recommended to run a new belt as well
My question is how long does the upgrade last ???? If you wore out the stock in 800 mile !
ha ha I have a similar voice helper in my head
& laughed as it is there to "help" me ;)
its good live in the woods. as a few times others have heard me talk out loud to answer my "other" voice. 😜
that new clutch and variater look good. runs good too!
the old stock stuff needed replaced [as many stick parts tend to be less than desirable] (yup im picky)
great job om replacing/up grading the scooter.
I watch other vids on mini bikes [yeahmight get 1 a does] from Black66
he has loads a upgrade ideas and on the cheap. he is a pavement type too that looks for speed. 0-30 lol
but such great ideas.
Id build one for trails, so slow n grunty/low torque would be my concern as I seldom need 30 on a trail.
yeah I have a shop 24' x 27', my wife calls it the garage.
to my surprise it was her idea to bring my saw in the kitchen as she thought it looked too pretty to sit out there. ;)
after a few months I moved it to the shop & havnt gotten any comments about that. [it looks pretty out there]
my bike/ [i call it a 4 wheeler] is inside the shop being a pretty [2022] I bought last year. it dont leak, but. . .
when I had bikes they did come inside the house, [my single days]
but my lill voice said I needed to build a shop with a concrete floor.
that voice sounded like it knew best. . . 😎
I got Dr. Pulley sliders 11 gram ready to install but now I’m considering the Malossi variator kit, comes with 12 gram rollers…anyway can anyone give me a reason not to swap out the 12 gram rollers for the 11 gram lifters?
Navi Nation!
👍
Yep too smooth of a surface inside the bell and on the clutch pads. You could just rub it with a 40 grit or any real rough sand paper to make the
surface much more coarse so it bites
Check out some thai or southeast asian videos on how they remove "dragging" as they call it
Are there no warranty on these bikes?
You should have went with the multi-plate clutch
Mom dad wake up Burch posted about the Navi again
😂😂😂😂😂
So is it really ok to leave your bikes inside?
Yay! Great job. Look at you with your new climate controlled workshop (with the Cat option) Moving on up, bro! 🤪
Thanks bro!! You don’t wanna know how much the guard cat upgrade was! 👀😂
Thanks
Thanks so much!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
So he's got a mic for the voice in his head... Amazon link please
Could only have 1, Navi or XR150?
What's the name of the app
It's weird to see a clutch so far back, basically along the rear axle
Yea I’ve never torn into a CVT transmission before so it was definitely interesting to see how everything works!
Video idea, akrapoviç exhaust upgrade with 0-50mph tests.
The Navi has a 0.9 gallon tank and a mpg of 132.6 so not bad other than it having a carburetor 👍 best to use unleaded Ethanol for the bike it has some protection against the engine sputtering also I bought a new carburetor which is why I said a 132.5 mpg difference also major speed difference I can get a top speed of 62 mph switched the throttle and the best thing I found out is that you have to fill it up higher than the average of 0.756 I filled it up to 0.923 and major difference also I changed the brakes to hydraulic and made the speedometer LED and added front suspension also the heavier you are the slower the acceleration is so if you wanna hit 62 mph be 165-175 lbs and you’ll get that difference with the government tax and fees plus the bike and all the mods it costed me $3,347 so this can be a nice little moped/scooter if you put the work in
NOICE!
What’s the app you’re using in the road test?
GPS race time?
Yup, what Andy said! It’s in the App Store as “GPS Race Timer” 🤘🏻
I have that shaking problem in my Navi and Im pretty sure that it has to do with the clutch pads :'c
I know it's all resolved but it may return on you. Common with CVT. Usually means you have to open up the CVT a d blow out the worn belt dust and clutch dust. Video still playing at this time so if rollers are all in place and none disintegrated causing imbalance I would say it's just a cleaning. Same happens on my Forza 350 so it may happen to you again on both bikesm
on carpet!!!????? omg you got me freaking out... put a tarp down lol....
The towel was enough!…this time anyway 😂 But trust me, this carpet was shot since the day I moved in. I’ve been trying to find an excuse to tear it up and do polished concrete for an industrial look 😎
I’m pretty sure your drum was glazed on three spots causing the clutch to slip during the revolutions. I think it’s caused by improper break in. But either way good video!
I'd agree, some of those spots were wayyy shinier than the rest, which is usually from bad break in etiquette
Ooo good eye! Now I want to go check it to see. I noticed that it seemed glazed, but didn’t notice the 3 different spots. That would explain A LOT 😳
there is a certain way to break in a new navi? am wanting to get one from a Honda dealer near me brand new but idk they look awesome
I’ve worked on my bikes in my living room a Few times.
burch working on his navi in his living room… i mean garage is awesome..
Did I miss something...What about a factory warranty to cover parts and labor in a Honda shop ?
Yes. Yes you did miss something. Like my other video(s) detailing everything you’re curious about.
I think Nina would love the head to head on the Navi’s.
“Loser has to cook dinner!!” 😂😂😂
@@LifeOfBurch you might win the battle, but Nina will win the war lol.
Mini moto “living” garage 😉
Dhould have went with a Reveno clutch setup
I originally wanted to, but they’re sold out everywhere! The cost wasn’t really worth it to me in the end anyway since my biggest concern was just fixing the thing, and any performance along the way was just a bonus.
WhaaaWhat!! You don't like red Starburst? Red and green are my favorites
I can’t do anything cherry flavored cause it reminds me of cold medicine as a kid 🤢 Pink starbursts are where it’s at!!
@@LifeOfBurch I'm with you Burch....hate all cherry flavored candy🤢
Dude I’ve seen you on Ritchie hwy
Ayy that’s what’s up! 😎🤘🏻
Those clutch pads look bad, but then again I've never seen one on the navi before
That was my exact thought process! “I think they look bad…but I also don’t exactly know what they’re *supposed* to look like.” 😅
Is this stock i just put 100 miles on a new one ill sell it asap let me know i know yall ,convert alot of stuff which trans us acting up?
Still got the tree up?! Christmas is so last year.
My family won’t be up for Christmas festivities until February, so we stay in the spirit until then! 😂🎄
@LifeOfBurch , well, a Merry Valentine's to all y'all, then.
