  • For as many MX series tractors as there are out there, there aren’t many videos on servicing them. With the rising costs of just about everything these days, I thought I’d make a video showing just how easy it can be to do the scheduled maintenance on these tractors yourself. I don’t show every maintenance item required in the 400hr service because many of them are very self explanatory, I do show the major items that people may find intimidating if they’ve never done them.
    The tractor’s owner manual will have all the scheduled maintenance intervals and if you don’t have your manual there’s an app for that… the My Kubota app will give you everything you need.
    If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.

    Great video!
    One quick note from the manual after changing the transmission fluid.
    IMPORTANT:
    "Do not operate the tractor immediately after changing the transmission fluid.
    Run the engine at medium speed for a few minutes to prevent damage to the transmission."

    Kudo's, sir. I work at a local Kubota dealership in the shop. I do PDIs (Pre Delivery Inspections) I admire how well you take care of your equipment. I wish more customers would do this practice. You save time and serious money simply by doing the regularly scheduled maintenance. I understand people are busy and some aren't mechanically inclined and simply ignore it. That is the worse case. Take care of your stuff and it will take care of you.

    You did a great job. My MX6000 has 398 hours on it and I have been reading the owners manual and getting ready to do the 400 hour service. Your video was timely for me. By the way, I have worked this machine hard. I have only had one instance where something has broken. The seat suspension. A weak weld that holds the springs in place came loose. Other than that the only damage to my tractor is a result of operator error!

      I appreciate the comment and sub. We’re hoping to someday put some actual effort into making videos, unfortunately time just doesn’t permit now.
      I do absolutely love my 5400, in just over 500 hrs I have zero complaints. Thanks again!

    Great video, I have an MX 5800 and have no complaints except for the location of the hydraulic fluid sight window, hard to see with my quick hitch on the tractor. One thing more, remember to check fluid level in front axle. Mine was a little low and I have only 250 hrs. on it. Thanks again.

    I enjoyed the video. My M7060's drain plugs are set up the same way. It's always interesting to watch how others maintenance their equipment, you can always pick up a new trick here and there.
    Edit - That UDT oil has an outrageous cost with it. I had our oil supplier for the mine I work at cross it over and I now use Phillip 66 Power Trans. oil. It is the exact crossover and cost much less.

    I purchased a Kioti DK6010SE Cab last year and have had a problem with it from day one that they aren’t able to fix. I just learned they are buying it back but asked what the hours are. I told them that after a year the hours have nothing to do with the buyback price. I want what I paid for it as I wouldn’t be needing to buy another tractor if this one wasn’t having so much trouble. We will see.
    I owned a Kubota B2650Cab before the Kioti but it ended up being way too small.
    I have a deposit in an MX5400 Cab and as soon as I get my check I’m going to purchase 0:01 it. I’m looking so forward to it. Thanks for this service video, pretty straight forward but always nice to see something done first. Nice job.

    Great job, very clear as to what all, was done - Where/when/how - Great idea, using auto ramps to level up the tractor on the sloping driveway… The MX5400, is a Sweet tractor - just hit 25 hours, on mine - Set up, the same way, Cab/Hydrostatic/Front loader… (first New tractor, after a previous occupation of 10 years, where being on the tractor 7 days a week was the norm - and, a good day, was one without a breakdown - due to the tractors being older, and having LOTS of hours)

      Ironmalice Don't give up! I don't think you'll regret buying this machine. I was so fortunate to find one of these during the pandemic. I wish one of my local dealers had had one, but I had to go to a dealer 2 hrs. away. Mine is open station, which is what I wanted. The R4 tires best suited my needs, and I had the dealer install a third function valve. The only regret I have is not having dual rear remotes installed. I have not really had a need for them as yet, but the option for a hydraulic top link would be nice. I have 90 hrs. on it and just had my 3rd regen., and no problems thus far. For an "economy" tractor, I feel your giving up very few "luxuries". Very comfortable tractor to operate. Good luck! I hope you find one soon!

      They can be hard to find depending on what part of the country you live in. Here in the south our local dealers are backed up 6 months to a year on new tractor orders. Prices keep going up too unfortunately.

    This video was great work man! Awesome. Next month I am buying an mx5400 2022 model, God willing of course. So I do not anticipate hitting 400 hours for a year or two however this gives me a good idea of where everyhing is that needs to be serviced ahead of time. My question is why are you using Taxable Diesel in your tractor? Why not save some cash and use red dyed farm fuel? I noticed when you were cleaning the water fuel separator that you had regular taxed non dyed fuel in the tub.

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words. The reason for non dyed diesel is that the closest location I’ve found that offers it is about 30 miles from me and the 20 cents a gallon just isn’t worth the drive to me. Someday I’ll get a 200 gallon tank out here and just order it but i haven’t gotten that far yet.

    You may want to invest in a set of JIS screwdrivers for the Phillips type screws on your tractor. JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standard. Those Phillips type screws are slightly different than their American counterparts, the angles and width of the slots are different. Amazon has many sets, just type in JIS screwdriver sets. You can buy just the Phillips type, or a set with the flat blade drivers included. There is a world of difference in the fit of the driver to the screws.
    I am buying an MX5400 next year. As I cannot find a dealer with one on the lot, I have a few questions if you don't mind.
    1.The need for the split engine oil pan I understand. I assume there is a cross channel to join the two sumps?
    2. When you changed the hydraulic filter, there was a grey box above the filter. Could you please tell me what that is for?
    3.Also, could you please tell me the brand, and part number if possible of the filter pliers that you used to change the hydraulic filter? Those are the first set that I have seen that use the Vise Grip principal. And one last question.
    4.Where is the fuel filler cap located on the tractor?
    Thank you for a great, very detailed video. I look forward to becoming a Kubota owner next year.

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the pointer with the screwdrivers, I’ll look into them.
      To answer your questions, I’ve never dropped the whole oil pan but I would assumed that like you said, each side would have a sump but where the pan bolts to the engine would be one large shared cavity.
      I’m not sure which box you’re referring to, the large grey box on the “passenger” side of the tractor is the hydraulic block. That cover comes off and all of your tractors hydraulic connections are plumbed underneath.
      I couldn’t tell you the brand of the filter wrench but it was most likely just a cheap autozone type brand. I don’t love them and wouldn’t necessarily recommend them.
      The fuel cap is on top of the hood right in front off the windshield. A lot of people don’t like that design because of having to lift heavy fuel cans up that high but there are a lot of simple options to alleviate that problem. I personally use a gravity fed 14 gal fuel can with hose that I clip on the loader and lift above the hood. Takes about 4 mins to fill the tractor.
      You’ll love the MX if you get one and I recommend joining the Kubota MX Facebook group… lots of good info and helpful people there.

    Are you happy with the ag tires or would your get different if you could do it again?

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому

      Ag tires are an absolute must with me. Where I live in Louisiana we have nothing but soft clay soil and I would constantly be stuck if I had R4s. I did worry about cut off stumps cutting these Ag tires up but knock on wood, I haven’t had a flat in 400 hrs. There not the best on the lawn but that’s not where it spends the majority of its time.

    • @xcape2usa
      @xcape2usa 2 роки тому

      Any thoughts on the R14 tires? The Kubota I'm looking at for 20 acre hay fields, it's an option. Completely flat land in Hill Country TX. I know...the irony, total 24 flat acres on top of a hill...

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому

      @@xcape2usa I have no experience with the R14s. They look really cool so that’s a bonus but from what I’ve heard, they won’t give as good of traction in wet clay as an Ag tire, and they’re not as rugged as an industrial tire, they kind of fit that slot right in the middle. I read comments from one person that said they hated them and were looking to trade, everything else I’ve read has been positive.

    When you were draining the real axle I noticed the tractors frame is just two small bars ??

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому

      If you’re talking about the the two Orange bars, they’re part of the loader sub frame. The tractor itself doesn’t have a traditional frame like a truck would.

      what is the tractors frame like? Does it hold up? Heavy duty?

    • @blackstonefarmsouth596
      @blackstonefarmsouth596  2 роки тому +2

      @@RiverRidge27 well, for the majority of tractors ever made, the engine, transmission, and rear axle housing are cast and made to be weight bearing. Sometimes you’ll hear this referred to as the “tunnel” but picture it as the core of the tractor. Basically every other part of the tractor is built off this rigid core. There is a pivot where the front axle is mounted but the rear axle does not pivot and there is normally no suspension on tractors. Interestingly there were a few older tractors I know of that were built off a frame like the old Allis Chambers WD. I can’t think of a single modern tractor that is built that way though. Tractors built like mine are very heavy duty and robust, the issue is when it comes to maintenance or repairs, you can’t just pull out the transmission as it is an integral part of the tractor and normally requires splitting the tractor in half to repair.

    Here is a suggestion for those of you that are as tight a$$ed as I am.
    I will save my hydraulic oils, or some of it anyway, and use it for "cutting oil" at my drill press and metal cutting band saw.
    And for those of you that do controlled burns I will take any old diesel fuel that is dirty and such, I will save that and use it in my drip torch, as I mix it at a ratio of 3 parts diesel to 1 part gasoline. I mean, why waste these fluids if you can use them for other things. Especially considering how expensive they are!
