I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that can find a way to make a mess changing oil. It happens.

Hi Mike, hey I have been watching your channel for a few months now and appreciate all things going on at the household. As a former High Horsepower Tractor Specialist with Case IH (which by the way I am not too far from you in Erie, PA), the number one item that gets missed and not written up in all the maintenance schedules is...changing front axle oil. Yes, you can get by without changing it but that oil is unfiltered, so if there is any shavings from the mfg line or casting sand that finally comes loose from churning, it can go right for your axle seals. Changed that oil at 50 on my MX5100 and BX2360. Also appreciate seeing Hunter in your videos too! My brother is autistic as well however he is not mute but does live in an assisted living home near Clarion, PA. Kudos to the videos you and your family are generating!
It's good to see guys like Mike that take care of equipment, even though it isn't theirs, and care about little critters too. I'm that way too.
Just a suggestion, we have a lot of equipment on our farm and when I change the oil or fluids I write the date and hours on the end of the filters with a sharpie marker. That way I can just look at it and know when it was changed last.
I also seen where someone else already mentioned it, but I've also used the shop vac method when changing hydraulic filters to keep them from dripping so much and loosing all that fluid.
I write the date and hours on the filters with a sharpie. It serves as a visual reminder for me for the maintenance schedule. Also have a notebook for each tractor.

I tend to drop the oil filter into the oil bucket. Makes for a great splash! Not one of my favorite jobs. Enjoyed you video and glad to see you are human.
I changed the oil in my mower the other day and didn't spill a drop. A new personal record! At least you didn't drop the drain bolt from the oil pan into the drain container!

Mike I too can relate wit the spilling of oil lol. When I change the hydraulic oil filters even though I don't spill much the level does go down when the new filters get filled after running. I would suspect you should check your level again after running. Glad to see you are getting back into the groove and you are seeing progress on the new building. Man wish I could build a building half that size lol

Hey mike I know what you mean. I changed my water pump on my pickup. So it went on without a hitch. Put antifreeze in it then I started it up it run for about five or six minutes so get warm I noticed it was spraining any freeze. Turn off the motor call the pump back off. The gaskets had somehow twisted. So now it’s midnight and I have to wait till tomorrow to get me some new gasket. So I know what you’re talking about Mike you do one thing everything goes smooth and then something happens. I was going to ask you I noticed that whenever you before you close the hood on your tractor there is a place for a air filter I didn’t know if you change it or not. So keep up the good work.

Got out from under the vehicle with no mess, moved the drain pan with no spills, walked around the vehicle and stepped into the drain pan wearing my brand new tennis shoes! Transmission filter is tightened one turn with a wrench after it makes contact with the mounting surface.
Hydraulic filter is tightened by hand, then an additional 1/2 turn.
Gotta admit you sure make moving, grading and shaping dirt look easy.
I place the suction hose of a small shop vac on the hydraulic fill hole when changing hydraulic filters ony Kioti CK3510. They gave me an incorrect filter for one of them. Oil everywhere the first time. I didn't loose a drop with the vacuum. Enjoy watching. We're from Southern Illinois.
dont forget to write the engine hrs & the date oil was changed on the end of the filter Mike , then you have visual of when it was changed , in permanant marker !!!!! How you all doing , regards from the UK.......

Was wondering if you swapped out the filter magnet on the suction side from the old filter to the new one? I forgot to and had to spin my new filter off and reinstall with the magnet. I couldn't tell from your video if you did this or not. Just wanted to let anyone know that has a MX5400HST so they don't mess up like I did.

Im with ya on spilling oil. I changed the oil in the ranger today and made a mess before i even started. I grabbed my drain pain and hadn’t completely emptied it and slung oil every where. Took the filter off the ranger and dropped it, another mess. A 15 min job turned in to 45 mins to get the messes cleaned up. The Kabota looks good all cleaned up. My RK55 is coming home this weeken and getting serviced and a bath. Stay well, stay safe and yall HAVE A DAY
I totally understand the part about spilling oil or dropping the wrench in the oil. I Fit in that same category. So I’m not alone in this field.. Thanks for the encouragement. Looking forward to seeing grass on that hill Someday hopefully before snow flies.

Good morning from MidMo again. Back from farm last night. Managed to knock all the tall (really tall- seeded out and some 4’) grass down mostly flat on the 2-3 acres loosely termed “the yard”. It’s inside the fence so cattle don’t do it for us. I won’t be back for about 5 weeks, so I set up for my deer camp trip - lit the pilot light on the heater etc. Set up trail cameras where we want to census deer crossing between the two halves of our farm. No matter what, oil will spill. Somehow, some way. And then the filter oil will get on frame or axle or something. At least your wrench won’t get rusty! I usually fumble the plug into the catch pan myself. I agree - that topsoil looked better after getting stirred up some. Those clumps might break up when you rake it. You’re going to appreciate that extra flat ground to work in.

Mike! I love the way you take care of your equipment. 👍 I learned a tip years ago about changing oil. I have a handful of blue pads that are often sold for house training puppies. They have an absorbent side and a waterproof barrier on the bottom. Great to spread out under any machine that you are changing fluids on! Learnef the hard way, lol, just like you! 😱
If I would have dropped that oil filter wrench 2 counties away it would have found that drain pan. But I like working on as well as with my tractor. I like taking care of it. Little things go a long way. Thanks Mike for sharing
I noticed you do exactly the same way I do, before you put on the new filters you finger paint the rubber gasket with new oil. I did my 50 hour maintenance back in March. That is a nice tractor Mike. Looked brand new again after washing it up.

I feel ya there, Oily Mike. I’m more of a wearer than a spiller. I helped a buddy change the oil in his 47 Olds rat rod a few weeks ago, and I had it all the way up to my armpits.

Mike - get yourself some automotive grade rubber gloves for these messy jobs. They clean up easy and can be used multiple times. As a helpful hint, buy yourself a 5 gallon pail of oil versus the quarts. Cost effective option and environmentally friendly over the quart containers. Might think about a power wash under the hood/engine compartment, as that dust will turn to rock over time, if left to accumulate. BTW, the orange dirt didn't come off! Love the videos and look forward to the build.

Make sure you clean that Engine too. Next Oil change use Rotella T6 5w40 it makes a Big difference. 👍
I tell ya what your the type of guy I'd buy a used piece of equipment from I've never seen anyone clean there tractor as much as you. I do the same as well I have a restored 1972 massey Ferguson that gets cleaned and never sits outside after use I have a polebarn though I also store my 78 3550 ford backhoe in my polebarn. I miss the mini excavator though if that was yours that would be a useful thing to get firewood in your 3 touch process. I cannot wait for the building to be built and to see how your gonna finish it.

I'm also a spiller. The first time I changed oil in my brand new building, I was all done under the truck with no mess. I caught the drain pan on something when I was picking it up and dumped all 6 quarts of dirty oil on my brand new floor.
In Canada 19 mm is the same as 3/4". LOL

And 13 mm is the same as 1/2, and 16 mm is the same as 5/8, and 24 mm is the same as 15/16.
Good to see the building is coming along and other projects on your property, I've been looking at getting a compact tractor and am good friends with the local store so we'll see what happens but probably looking at getting the 5400 series with front loader bucket and other attachment.
Fire wood bucket to sift roots from soil/dirt. At different times: dropped a gallon glass jug (remember lemon blend) of oil, filled transfer can from a 55 gal drum on it's side - I can go away and come back in time to shut the valve, NO!!. I spilled more oil and wasted more money than I ever saved by buying a 55 gal drum. I hate changing oil. The cars are too low to even get a pan under them. Thanks and take care.
Thanks for saving the Toads😊👍 It is a real good idea to use all KUBOTA Lubricant's there is a big difference in quality and additives they use. Although the grease is no biggy; but the Super UDT2 hydro fluid and engine oil is🚜👍😊

When selling Kubota tractors, I always told my customers “fluids and filters, fluids and filters!” It prevents so many issues along the way.
Ha!!! I changed the oil in my MX5100 into a 5 gallon bucket. Then into the same bucket I drained the oil from my John Deere 870. Refilled, greased and proceeded to back over the bucket. Thankfully I had a pile of crushed concrete close by and a front end loader on the 870. Than did a remarkably good job of soaking up the spill.

You may know this but with running your tractor in those dirty conditions your radiator, condenser and air cooler(if equipped) will get full of dirt. Water doesnt get them clean. You have to use compressed air. Blow them out opposite the normal direction of air flow first, then from the normal direction and back and forth. Be careful not to get too close and you wont bend any fins. Your shop is looking good. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Quick tip - don’t forget to properly torque/tighten the two oil drain bolts. A few years back, I had my Kabota serviced on-site by a local dealership. The mechanic hand-tightened the drain bolts but forgot to follow up with a wrench. A few weeks later, while using a Woods Chipper attached to the Kabota running at about 540 rpm, one of the drain plugs backed all the way out. The other bolt was about halfway out. Unfortunately, I didn’t notice this until my wife walked up and asked, “Is that supposed to be happening?” I looked to see oil all over the ground and immediately stopped the engine. It was too late, however; the engine was toast. The best I could do was negotiate a split cost with the dealer for a new engine. So....word to the wise - tighten the drain bolts.
That's a good reason to change your own oil.
Had a very respectable garage leave the plug loose on my pick-up and noticed oil dripping as soon as I got home. Called them and they were very apologetic. Don’t know if they would have taken responsibility if something happened but I started checking the plug after that.
Oh, one other thing, if you are looking for any bolt on wheel weights for the MX, you can use 140lb Farmall Super A rear wheel weights. They are a direct bolt up with some all thread. Found someone in Erie who restores old Farmalls and was sell the weights off. Farmall cub is not the same rim diameter. I have 2 on each side of mine and was a little cheaper than other vendors. My profile picture shows only one installed and decided why not load up the rear end with weight.
If you are at all curious, I also married a Bobcat 709 skid steer backhoe to my MX5100 complete with subframe and fabricated a homemade cab for snowblowing during Lake Effect snows.
That tractor needs a play date with the power washer! Also, I noticed a drip on a plug or fastener rear of the engine underneath. I heard that a trick for changing they hydrostat filters is to hook a shop vac up to the filler port, turn it on, then remove and replace the filters. The air rushing in through the filter housing will prevent loss of oil. I tried it on the headstock of a metal lathe and it worked great!
A little trick to keep from loosing any hydraulic fluid is to put your shop vac on the filler hole while you change out the filter. I restrict mind down a little and when you remove the filter it draws air keeping the fluid from spilling out.

I'm a spiller too, first one at 8 years old the filter slipped out of my grip and landed on my chest dumping entire content and I've lubricated many tools like you did.

Good morning yes I can believe you can drop your wrench you are not the only one. I usually drop the drain plug in the oil pan.
Mornin' Mike. Hopefully ArmorAll has changed it's formula since the late 60's. I used to use it and found that, after a while, it would crack vinyl, rubber, and the like surfaces if you went very long without reapplying. I've had several classics and streetrods since then and use mostly Meguiar's products. Been watching Outdoors With The Morgans since you started and love every episode. ~ Jim, Olympia, WA
I never did like the filter locations.I know it’s a minor thing to get oil dripping on parts and can be sprayed off,but with a little thought to design they could avoid that..I’d be tempted to buy a kit to mount the oil filter in another location to keep parts clean .We do it all the time in custom car builds

I use disposable absorbent pads (~ 4ft by 4 ft) to do my tractor work as I'm unintentionally messy at times. They come in a pack of 6-12.
I have greatly reduced my spillage when I bought a catchment container that is sealed on top but slopes to the middle drain hole with a screw in plug and holds 5 gallons. It ids pretty goof proof.
Don’t feel bad mike I’ve been maintaining busses,trucks and equipment professionally for the last 45 years and still make a mess.lol it’s inevitable.
Hey Mike little hand while you have the oil plugs out and you drain the oil out of the tractor and you changed the one filter you should change all the filters and then put the oil back in the tractor
That was motor oil then hydraulic was the other filters

One thing I found is that it's better to clean the tractor before changing the oil but great job .
Yep, I'm a spiller too. Mike, one thing that I like to do on my MX is to write the date and hours on the outside of the filters with a black indelible pen. I find the date particularly important because I don't usually put enough hours on in the timeframe for the changes that the manual recommends. Makes checking them a snap. Did you have any issues greasing the front axle gear case supports? (to the inside of tires on top of the knuckle)? They always seem to give me issues.

I’ve never mastered filling the bar oil. About 3/4 of the gallon of oil actually ends up in the saw.
Total agreement, daylight in the evenings is creaping away. I am not ready for the 5pm total darkness yet.

I had to change 20 gal of hyd fluid in my Ironworker today and got a lot on the floor. Im just like Mike, usually spill some EVERY time I change oil.... Its just the way it is.
I think that oil spilling business is a corollary of Murphy's Law or, as grandma called it, the Butter Side Down Rule. If you change oil you spill some. If you drop a piece of toast it lands butter side down. (Then the five second rule comes into play, lol.)
