  • The Carousel of Progress will never close. That's what Walt Disney said before he passed away. But there will reach a point when the attraction is no longer viable in its current form. What happens then? In this episode, we explore a few possible answers, as well as the broader topic of historic rides and their preservation within the theme park industry.

4:20 Alas, this is what we get for making jokes months in advance. 🙄 And while Carousel of Progress does seem less threatened with Bob Iger back in charge, most of the concerns we raise in the video are still valid.
Also, I don't usually ask you to like, comment, or subscribe during these videos. I figure, if you're using this platform, you know how to do those things. But we could really use the boost. So if you like this episode, please consider helping the channel out and doing them. Thanks!

Just found your channel good content I have been going to WDW since 1972, a DVC member for 24 years and it’s disheartening to see the decline in the parks, a lot has to do with people now days I watch people throw garbage or food they don’t want into bushes out side attractions it’s sad . We are headed down on the 9th of January for 2 weeks and it’s the first time we are not going to any park. We are day tripping from wdw to other areas in FL.

@@SteveCarras Realistically seems only the present need be updated - yet the characters should in their only theme park version keep their same names - maybe extend the time frame of scene two and three to represent change of the 100-years or whatever time frame. Horizons showed the best of update option as a second attraction. REALITY could also be a small Horizons add on the the carousel - leave the original for another section. The soundtrack of the original World's Fair version indicates there was a larger after show part of the attraction - that might have inspired the Tiki Bird Room? An exhibit about fusion power too. If need be a move of location out of the current location. Disneyland may be more land locked on such option....

The Carousel should absolutely be a museum piece. It should be maintained and preserved just as a historical document or sculpture would be in a museum. I wouldn't necessarily say this about all the old rides (though Horizons was near and dear to my heart) but Carousel represents a very key pivotal time in American art and technology. Stop with the "updates". This destroys it's historical significance and creates a situation of constant upgrades to keep up with current themes. This is the hole Disney Imagineers dug themselves when they started updating the last scene. Within 2-3 years it was dated and now just comes off corny. I do think the possibilities of VR and AR technology show a lot of promise as a way to document and record these rides for future generations. If Disney Imagineers were smart and forward thinking the "museum pavilion" would be an excellent opportunity to showcase the Carousel in all of its animatronic glory while offering guests the chance to experience past rides in VR/AR. In short, I just wanna ride Horizons again :)

What I love about the Carousel of Progress, is it’s zen like vibe. With its folksy narration, slow pace and cold A/C, it’s a reprieve from the chaos and stress of the park outside. What I would do is move it to Epcot and change the show building to allow for more scenes. I would have the que be of a museum dedicated to Walt and the ride like what they have at Hollywood Studios. Perhaps souround it with an outdoor green area garden where people can relax and take a break.

My wish is to keep it as a "museum piece", but perhaps add an animatronic of Walt in the entry theater. Instead of staring at that lightshow emblem, we could watch and listen to Walt explain his vision of the future (through his eyes). There are plenty of recordings of Walt to create a sub-storyline. Perhaps update the science of the mechanisms, but keep everything as-is as a tribute to a different future as Walt had imagined.

You know, Carousel of Progress is such a good show. Both in the way it is written and told, and the mechanics of the theater seats that revolve around the stage. I think a crack team of Imagineers could keep the bones of the theater and re-write a show that spans from 'turn of the 20th Century' moves more quickly through history and then leans in to the 21st Century. The end could incorporate filmed elements that could be revised and renewed as time goes on. In short, it's worth keeping around.

As for the idea of a recreation in the future, I think this is actually a really neat idea. I do personally really like the original and hope it sticks around as long as the park does, but I know a lot of people either don't care about it or even have a negative opinion of it.
I think the following eras have real potential:
1980: VHS and cassette tapes, early PCs, early video games, fax machines
2000: Cell phones, early internet, DVDs + flatscreen TVs, and iPods
2020: Smartphones, advanced internet + streaming, early robotics and AI, devices like Alexa, virtual reality
2040+: Whatever we get to by then!

In the future it will be all we have of these tangible treasures we have today. But with the chronicling of these spaces, experiences will live on and be enjoyed and be celebrated by countless future souls. It may only be in the sense of memory as opposed to the physical, but that is all of history. And still joy and education and connection will be passed down to all the dreamers and imagineers who come after us. Great job! Love your work!

I got to first see this attraction at the New York’s world fair. I liked the way the show was presented and due to the larger seating per show area the line moved relativity fast. I agree if it is kept open the biggest challenge is do you keep it as a historical piece of old Disney or do you updated the story for modern audiences. I just hope they keep it going and it remains popular. As noted if a ride looses interest it usually is updated or replaced.

One of my favorite Disney attractions is It’s Tough to be a Bug. Sure it still exists at Animal Kingdom, but at DCA, the tore it down and replaced it with an attraction that uses the exact same ride system that is already in the park! Webslingers is just Toy Story Mania rethemed and updated with newer technology. But it’s nothing close to a new, innovative experience. Disney took out Maliboomer when they put in Tower of Terror because they were rides with similar experiences, but then they build a whole new land in the same park and the only attraction in that new land is painfully similar to a ride already available. It makes the loss of It’s Tough to be a Bug that much more a slap to the face!

It's a neat piece of history and there is a little area to get food. Even without the VR, Disney could do something like that. They can charge admission and it wouldn't cost much to create it, since they have the archives they could draw from.

At 8:13 (and elsewhere,) isn't she the functional equivalent of Mary Tyler Moore?
We tried roughly the same stuff at COSI, a sort of science museum in Columbus, Ohio. There were a dozen or so life-sized dioramas, mostly behind glass, starting at around 1900 and proceeding to modern times, which in this case was 1964. So that display gave us two sets of artifacts to worry about. The Volkswagen Beetle, the juke box, and some electrical stuff were always on the fritz, and other items tended to fall apart without warning.
Still, I enjoyed working there until the highly mobile administration changed yet again. I was only a volunteer, but they fired everyone else, and I haven't been back.

Think the matter of the situation is that your faced with the issue of preservation over moderation. In the end themeparks must evolve to keep going. Here's what I think.
Disney should invest in perhaps in modernizing newer parks as they haven't been established yet with rides that are classics like those of the originals. The older ones should maintain historical classics for preservation reasons. essentially turning the classic parks into essentially living museums. keeping as much as the classical rides as possible with some new ones replacing ones that can be replaced. Or just buying new land nearby or within driving distance.
As for the ship of theseus argument. I say that so long as it keeps to the spirit of the original intention then the argument is not a issue.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to add a few more rooms. Because I think the message of the original carousel of progress was the transformation from an agrarian society where everything was done using human or animal power to an industrialized society. I think the intention was to remind us how much easier our life is now compared to a few generations ago.. To start with the dawn of the computer age and the Internet, is like reading a book starting at the halfway point.

With the recessions from the 70’s and early 80’s, most people in the 80’s lived in 70’s hold-over houses with wood paneling, gaudy Spanish-Mediterranean furniture with large wall paintings on the wall and avacado, rust or mustard color kitchens. If they have us walking around with pink hair while playing with brick phones, it’s not going to fly.

I was 14 when Epcot opened and first visited as an adult. I like Carousel of Progress and would be mildly saddened to see it go away. My daughter grew up a Disney fan(atic). For her CoP is a must-do every single visit and she would be outraged if they took it away. She doesn’t even want it updated. My grandkids rejoice that they are now old enough to do their own thing instead of being forced to see it with Mom.
Which is to say it will eventually lose its loyal audience. Just my opinion.😢

If the entire ride were to be updated, here is a way to pick the decades for each act. I read this idea somewhere else. I can't remember where, but it bears repeating here.
Let's use 1960 for the sake of simplicity as the Original-Design-time for the World's Fair of 1964.
Act 1 is 1890-1900. The park-goers who were 70 years old could remember first hand most of this scene.
Act 2 is 1920-1930. The park-goers who were 50 y/o could easily remember this.
Act 3 is 1940-1950. For the park-goers who were 30 y/o, this was very recent.
Act 4 is the near future. All ages can think of this.
Now use 2030 when the next version is unveiled: ( include all the items in comments by '@weldin' below)
Act 1 is 1960-1980 with NASA and space exploration as a theme. 70 y/o+ would easily remember this era.
Act 2 is 1980-2000 showcasing personal computers. 50 y/o could relate to their first computers
Act 3 is 2000-2020 having the rise of the internet and social media. Gen X, Y, and Z would all be in here.
Act 4 is the future. AI and VR could be highlighted with their uses in the future.
All the existing scenes could be achieved in a static display area.

I think there's actually a pretty easy fix for the Carousel that would only involve two changes.
The first is the question of how to make an unpopular ride popular. That part's the easiest to solve. We change the opening. Not the first scene, but the opening. Before the stage rotates. Currently it's just a curtain and a logo of the Carousel with Father's voiceover introducing the concept to the audience.
In the new, modified version. This becomes its own showpiece. We have the curtain and the sign. But then it raises and we see an all knew, state of the art Walt Disney animatronic stand and introduce the show using old archive recordings of him talking about it and deepfake audio technology where necessary. (this will be important later)
The Walt Animatronic alone will drive people to the attraction. The opportunity to see the company's beloved founder in "real life" would be a huge pull for Park and Disney fans. So that gets people in the theater more than it has in a long time.
Second, is a modified end scene. We start with the family in the familiar retro 80's future, but the Walt Animatronic is also there. After a few shenanigans, Father asks Walt if this is the future he dreamed about. Walt addresses the family and the audience about how this show was how the world changed for his generation and that it led to even bigger innovations. As Walt talks the lights fade so only he's there and a dazzling montage projected of the development of tech in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It ends with Walt saying that the future is never done developing and the great big beautiful tomorrow is always around the corner. We then end with Walt and the family singing the song and the show is over.
So with a more involved final scene, and the newest tech now being something on a screen rather than an animatronic, the show can be more easily modified to accommodate new innovations and the Walt Animatronic provides a constant draw to guests.
At least that's my way of trying to square this circle.

These are fascinating ideas. There's one rather large problem, though. Given the direction the world is heading, we've lost the ability to see the future as hopeful. We're no longer in an era where technology brings wonder. Our best hope is that it will bring solutions to issues (like the effects of global warming) that we haven't yet considered, even if it can't mitigate all the disasters we'll face. My guess is that rides like these will start to focus on futures that never happened, more nostalgialand than tomorrowland.

my personal preference would be for them to combined the first two scenes into a single scene since the further into the future you go the less the difference in time matters then use the new 3rd slot for a time period around the turn of the millennium and the final scene continuing to be updated as it is as being slightly in the future. it keeps alot of the original historic value is relatively cheap to do and allows the ride to stay relevant

I have already given up my annual pass after living in Florida for almost 20 years before that I visited at least once to twice a year 1982 from out of state I still visit and pay the full park pass when family comes down from other states but if they take this attraction away I will never visit again to me it's a simple solution this attraction definitely needs updated but leave the old as it was Disney has much property to add on to this I think Walt Disney's dream needs to continue

Its perfect! Rename it something like "WTF Happened?", shut off the power to the cars and let people walk through. Maybe add a couple of stations at the end depicting both parents working and the kids learning morality from neighborhood delinquents before having kids of their own with no idea what real parenting or real morality was like. And the downfall of civilisation.

Realistically, such would seem possible in a lesser form than simulator - how about a dark ride of instead the great movies - Disney's best history of parks ride. Or a sort of Voyage of Progress of parks of the past. Combine it with the needed gift store and restaurant. After all the corporate purpose of anything is sales of product and merchandise, plus the food experience. REALITY brings up the date Steamboat Willie is supposed to be public domain - and should be in the past open for use in actual museum and new productions and interpretation. Corporate world Macy's keeps up the past department store names through products and merchandise and some historic buildings. If one stopped using the old they would lose the rights. ---- Best example - the now popular holiday film "Its a Wonderful Life". Stuck in time spun around everywhere until some lawyer found it was possible to purchase the (RIGHTS) to the music.... Sold the movie music to NBC. The rest is history of many VHS and DVDs may survive of the chaos of it. New viewing in even movie theaters stopped, as in I read a movie theater can't do its former tradition of showing the film anymore.....

Another option would be to build a Walt Disney Museum on property and have Carousel of Progress there as something to help draw Disney fans to the museum. I know COP has ardent fans, but it seems old and tired to many and Tomorrowland needs more modern futuristic attractions like TRON.

I have no solutions but a few comments.
The Carousel of Progress was part entertainment, part GE advertising. The advertising traced the progress of the electrical home beginning without electricity and originally ending in "current day." When Carousel of Progress moved to Walt Disney World, the replacements at Disneyland were America Sings, and then Innovations.
Your recommendation of showcasing computerization of the home was done in a couple of places--the World of Motion and Spaceship Earth showcased automobile technology (including robot assembly line workers) and communications history respectively. Corporate sponsors were the foundation of these exhibits because without corporate advertising funds there would be no attraction. Current Disney attractions are themed around Disney IP--the Carousel of Progress was not.
The marketing ploy now seems to be going after the bird in the bush and throwing out the thousand birds in hand. That old meme went "a bird in the hand is worth two birds in the bush" but the need for market growth has blinded Team Disney. The Great Movie Ride at what was Disney/MGM Studios closed more because of an expiration of collaboration contracted between Disney and MGM than because the ride had gotten stale. Disney theme parks are business enterprises--big corporation. The Disney Company has had multiple crises and business slumps. Mike Eisner was brought on board in the Eighties to fix one slump and was booted out during another. Bob Iger took over and was himself forced into retirement so that Bob Chapek could fix problems--and now Iger's back. The theme parks division is just one part of the Disney entertainment giant. Monetizing Disney products through synergetic marketing was tried since the early days. The Swiss Family Treehouse and Matterhorn Bobsleds were inspired by Disney movies and spawned merchandise. When was the last time you watched "Third Man on the Mountain?" Activists have stopped complaining that the Swiss Family Robinson was a problematic representation of Cold War nonsense. The old "run the movie again in theaters on a seven-year cycle" movie schedule is an obsolete marketing strategy and some of the theme park attractions have been made into movies.
Anybody for a Sailing Ship Columbia or a Riverboat Mark Twain movie?
I saw the Carousel of Progress as a time travel adventure. How did electricity change the home and life over the past six decades? I was fortunate and first saw Carousel of Progress in Disneyland before they moved it to Florida--even got to experience the moon flight before it became a flight to Mars.
By the way, the humble Disney Family Museum in San Francisco does much of what you suggested as a solution to closing Carousel of Progress.

I first saw "The Carousel of Progress" at the NY World's Fair in 1964 & loved it! This, plus the "Pirates of the
Caribbean", "Hall of Presidents", plus a few others, were disassembled & brought to Disneyland circa 1966-67,
unfortunately at the same time as Walt Disney's death in late 1966! When DisneyWorld opened, 1971 & the park
only charged a mere $3.00 for general admission, (no rides included) many of these attractions were still included!
p.s. My first child was born 10/01/71, the very day DisneyWorld, Fla. opened!

The ride can still show progress. Just have the Dad building a model of Carousel of Progress based on his childhood memories. The Dad's life can still show how the world has progressed. The Dad could talk about his memories while comparing them to the present and what the future holds. This way the ride is updated and the Walt's original favorite ride is maintained and cherished by the ride's main character. The Dad.
