I hate to give a dark perspective but don't all the later acts take place after birth control and abortions became a readily available commodity.

Thank you so much for putting this video together. I’m one of the Cast Members that not only work at this attraction, I also train there as well. I’m so proud to carry on Walt’s legacy in this amazing attraction.
It is true that once we received the show in Florida that the building went from clockwise to counter clockwise. My guess is because of the exit ramp. Space Mountain was opening at the same time. Disney would rather people exit towards their newest attraction rather than an empty wall.
The young girl in Act I, I don’t know who she is. There seems to be a hint somewhere that she was left over from It’s a Small World, also from the ‘64 World’s Fair. No one seems to know for sure.
I also know in Act III, if you look on the bed of Jim, you’ll see a blue cowboy hat; possibly a reference to A Christmas Story. There also use to be a BB gun before they were banned from all parks.
While standing outside, we have a Preshow video playing while you wait for the doors to open. The original voice of the father, Rex Allen, narrates the video. If you listen closely, you can hear a reference to the last refurbishment when he says, “.. some 30 years ago.” He was recorded in 1994. 30 years are now over 50.
Occasionally I’ll get a guest asking when will they update the attraction. I suppose there are rumors flying around. I would love to see some sort of update. When or if it will happen I don’t know.
Thanks again for making this video!

I really love the Carousel of Progress, and I really hope they never remove it. I've been paranoid from rumors over the years saying they intend to replace it with a Star Wars themed attraction, and I sincerely hope that they never go through with it. The ride is just too important to the history of the parks, as well as audio animatronics and history. No, it's not a thrill ride, and no, it doesn't have any pop culture movie tie-ins, but it's a great ride to escape the crowds and excitement and just take a load off with feel-good vibes. Awesome video!

    • @loganwillis815

Sami Dark I don’t think they will ever get rid of it because it is a popular attraction and I sat down and did the math not to long ago about how many people ride it and it is a huge amount. Also the history behind the attraction with Walt making it himself. They say by 2021 the attraction will be updated so that doesn’t mean changed to Star Wars. If it is changed I’m sure all the fans will freak out but I’m pretty sure Disney would just keep it the way it is now as a tribute to the Worlds Fair version.

    • @boy_of_the_cones
      @boy_of_the_cones 5 років тому +21

That's correct, if they were to remove this, there'd truly be an uprising. This is the only ride in Walt Disney World that Walt himself touched. It was also his personal favorite. Also, there is nothing yet confirmed for 2021, it's just a popular rumor and something people hopes happen. Nothing is confirmed yet by Disney.

I haven't been to the Carousel since 1974 . . . when it was at Disneyland. As kids, we'd quote the show, "I thought you said I need a great big hearing aid!" That spot in Disneyland never really recovered. It was replaced by America Sings for about 15 years (Deborah Stone, RIP), went dark for a very long time, then was Innventions, and now is a Star Wars meet-and-greet. It's like the mouse can't figure out what to do with it.

Perhaps an update will come in time for the big anniversary! How cool would it be if they are setting up new set pieces, costumes, motion programs, and recordings RIGHT NOW and carry out an almost overnight transformation to surprise us all!

To be fair the last scene really only needed a minor refresh.. most of the tech shown is still pretty relevant. What with voice activated "Home Assistants" like Alexa and VR sets becoming more common and have so much more room to grow, The scene could be updated easily with just some new lines and some minor aesthetic tweaks without replacing it wholesale like was needed in the past

I personally like the Carousel of Progress that they have now, even if it's 25 years old. It lets us think back to the past and how people believed the future to be like during that time period. I find it very interesting and quite refreshing, cause if you compare the carousel of progress and the way the characters are dressed and acting to today's world, it's a drastic difference.

  • @pretzelygirl

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Carousel of Progress! It is one of my favorite attractions at the whole park!! What i wish they would do is put it on a bigger scale completely! they already have the turn of the century, 20's, 40's, and the "prediction of turn of the century". What I wish they'd do is put 60's, 80's, 2000's, and then a new prediction of what's to come!! This would put a whole new spin on the classic attraction!! More people would be interested and it would be a beautiful work of art!! It is what Walt would've wanted.

Maybe it's just me but I've never agreed with the thinking that the final scene is outdated. The entire anthem of the Carousel of Progress is that tomorrow is just a dream away. In every single act, we watch a family be so impressed with the current state of technology and cultural change that the idea of things improving is simply bombastic. The father even says "it just can't get better than this." Often this approach in thinking is even used for comedic effect. The father chuckling at the idea of a man flying around the world falls right in line with this brand of thinking. It simply cannot get better than where we are now. So seeing the family in the final act talk about how amazing the current state of things are serves as not an example of outdated dialogue that needs to be rewritten, but the most honest look at progress there is. The final scene looks outdated because the technology we use now is vastly superior to what we once thought was the apex of progress. Walking outside the attraction, we are proven at every corner that the world keeps on changing. It *always* keeps changing/improving (depending on how you look at it.) I don't see the final "present day" Christmas scene as something depicted in the present day, I view it as just another period of history that we look back on, chuckling at how ignorant we were. There is a great, big, beautiful tomorrow and that "tomorrow" we continue to see. The final scene isn't outdated, it contains the same ignorant spirit as every other act. It is impossible to make a present-day setting for this attraction because you cannot contain growth. That's the entire point of progress and I think Walt would be extremely proud of what the attraction has become.

Magicman205 I never thought about it that way. I hate to see great scenes “updated” because you then lose that slice of life in that era. So I am now with you on preserving the “outdated scene” along with all the other “outdated scenes.” It also gives us a good laugh at what we thought couldn’t be beat in our “modern” world. I think the best solution would be to add another act...then another and another...

Carousel of Progress has always been one of my favorite rides/shows in Magic Kingdom!
As to the secondary, younger ‘daughter’ in act one; I remember initially thinking that that sequence was showing the mother at work in an old country store, and that the girl was probably just a helping hand.
But later on, after realizing that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense, I’d begun to think that she was probably just a farmhand. A local daughter, possibly there in a form of apprenticeship, or even in between her studies, as I considered that the mother might’ve been a sort of tutor, to her.
Truth is, I’ve no idea, lol. But, those were my speculations.

The other thing I thought was that the mother was actually doing the ironing and that was the daughter. while the daughter dos show up a couple of minutes later, since this is a progressive play who is to say that she did not grow up to a young lady in that scene? It seems to have a slight bit of future and (current) past going on and there could be a few years lapsing during that time. My first trip to Disney World took place in 1975 - the year they moved the "Carousel" to Florida - and "Now Is The Time" is the musical earworm that became forever associated with the ride. Also, I, too, experienced the "What the What?" phenomenon with "It's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow", and that's one of the main reasons I clicked on this video - which did a fine job explaining "What's What"!

When I went back in the 90's and heard "It’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” I assumed they decided to update the look and the music. It was well into the 2000's before I learned that the latter was indeed the original music. Thanks for covering that part of the lore....

    9:46 DEBUNKED
FALSE! THERE IS AN EXPLANATION FOR THE GIRL!
On the Tomorrowland Peoplemover, When you pass the Carousel of Progress the narrator of the ride says the line
"In this rotating theater, 4 families welcome you into their homes of yesterday and today."
This implies that EACH act features a different family. Which means the family in act 1 just so happens to have one more child. As for the other families, They just so happen to have the same first names. In fact they play with that by giving them nicknames to kinda differentiate them from the others (in act 1 the daughters name is Patricia and in act 3 they nickname her patty). Heck in act 1 the father doesn't even call the mom by her first name and refers to her as "Mother" referenced in the first line he says to her in act 1.
Not to mention this would also explain why In every act the characters look different and also why in the original show (Which the girl was featured in) had a DIFFERENT DOG in each scene.
The reason I think this character in the show is for the purpose of helping to operate the "wash-day marvel".
The REAL QUESTION IS WHERE IS GRANDPA IN ACT 1?!
Well there is a tight explanation for that as well.
There is theory that the reason there's no grandpa in the first act is because the father in the first act is The grandfather in the final Act (Voiced by actor Rex Allan). You can see some similarities mainly through the outfit. Not to mention some of the lines grandpa says in the final act kind implies he's from the time period of the first act. Which means he must be around age 100+.
Because of this that also means the mom in act 1 is also alive In act 4 as the grandma. And it makes sense, she was fascinated with the newest technology, Or in this case her "Wash-day Marvel", in act 1. And in the final act she's fascinated by the VR game expressing more interest in the new modern age technology by playing the video game.

Edit: I'd like to add some insight in the disappearing girl: First of all, when the attraction was updated in 1993, the first scene became around 1904, not 1890s. At that time it was common for families to have somewhat of a "helper" you can say to help the family do chores. I remember reading this about this attraction a long time ago. Although it is not confirmed, it is most likely the best theory, since Disney as a whole rarely makes mistakes, especially when this attraction is 50+ years old

    • @garypesci746
      @garypesci746 3 роки тому

@@harvestcrops3983 I can give you an idea of what the last act was like when it was at Disneyland. The Carousel of Progress was one of my favorite attractions when it was there. I lived just 15 or 20 miles from Disneyland, so I was able to go once or twice a year. Very disappointed when the Carousel moved to Disney World. The last act was set in the then current time of the late 1960s when it opened at Disneyland and it featured the current technology of that time. I never thought that it was supposed to predict future technology as TPMvids stated in their video, just showcase what was modern at that time. I saw or read somewhere that the last act was updated somewhat when it was moved to Disneyland from the World's Fair, even though it was only a few years later. Probably put in new kitchen appliances, since this was basically an ad for General Electric. I remember that the last scene looked very modern, there was a large living room on the right with 60s style contemporary furniture & decor and a good sized, very modern looking kitchen on the left. The mom & dad were the only characters in the scene, they were sitting next to each other on a couch in the living room and there was a large decorated Christmas tree behind them. This was the only act that referenced a holiday, there was no mention in the other acts of Valentine's Day, Fourth of July or Halloween, as they did after it moved to Disney World. The back wall of the living room had a wide floor to ceiling window or sliding glass door with drapes that automatically opened as either the mom or dad (don't remember which) talked about the modern conveniences they had. One of them mentioned that Grandma & Grandpa's plane was due to arrive at the airport. There was a flashing light that could be seen going across the night sky through the back window/sliding glass door, which was pointed out with a comment something like "That's probably their plane now". I always thought this was a subtle way of pointing out the modern way of traveling by plane, and even the old folks are doing it. The mom & dad also pointed out the modern kitchen appliances, like the dishwasher and the refrigerator that had ice & water in the door (which was a new thing then). As they mentioned each of these, a spotlight lit up the appliance and it did something automatically, the dishwasher door opened and the rack pulled out, and ice and water poured into a glass in the refrigerator door and the side-by-side doors opened. I'm sure they mentioned the stove as well, but I don't remember exactly what it did, probably the oven door opened. The only other thing I remember is that the mother did a lot of talking. She didn't say much in the earlier acts, since the dad did most of the talking. In the last act she kept cutting off the dad while he was talking and at one point he said "Quiet while mother's interrupting". I hope I explained this well enough so that you can picture how it was. I just saw a video of the 1964 Worlds Fair on UA-cam that had a very brief glimpse of the last act of the Carousel of Progress as it looked at the fair, which is similar as to how it looked at Disneyland, but I don't know the title of the video. If you look for videos of the 1964 Worlds Fair on UA-cam you might find one or more that shows scenes of the Carousel of Progress from the fair.

Always one of my favorite rides and the nostalgia was deep seeing that clip from 1991, being as that was about the time I went there the most. But even back then, it was threatened with closure. I remember the update being in the news and I was quite pleased that it mean the show was going on, but when I moved away, they were still threatening it and I honestly thought it had closed for good.

I really wish there was a video of each version of the carousel of progress. It would be very interesting to see how the attraction was updated from the 1960s to the 1990s. As a fan I think a better idea then updating the final scene, which would require a huge jump from the 1940s to today, would be to reinstall the horizons attraction from Epcot next to carousel of progress. After all, horizons was a continuation of the story from carousel of progress.

Has anyone else pointed out that they arrive at 10:01? 10:01 = October 1st - the 1971 opening day of WDW. Adding 2018 technology to CoP, People Mover, and Tomorrowland Speedway have long been on the to-do list of many Disney Imagineers. The trouble is none of these updates would provide enough bang for the buck. Currently, the attractions do what they're supposed to do... they keep families busy while they're waiting for their dinner reservation or Space Mountain FastPass. And none of the attractions are really *wrong*, they're just out of date. Personally, I think there's a better chance of them getting replaced with something new than being updated. And since there really isn't a need to add something new to the most popular and busy theme park in Florida, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I personally think that that little girl was either a "servant/ assistant" to the family, or was a third child that sadly passed before the next scene of the show. Let me explain my reasoning for both.
I think the girl might have been like a maid, but a very young one that the family took on to help around the house due to the amount of people living in the family. She may have done everything the mother did and just was there to help.
I think she also may have been a third child to the family, but may have gotten sick and the family either didn't have enough money to pay for her hospital bills, or didn't have a cure for her.
However in the context of Disney, I think the reason she disappears is due to the fact that they were running low on money and didn't want to make another animatronic or face mold for the girl in the other scenes.
Also. Personally don't believe that Disney will ever update the last scene of the show. The attraction is still to this day very low in attendance with people. I think that if they truly wanted to say that the show was new that they would re-do it to try to bring up attendance for it. However no I don't think they will change the last scene.
I love the Carosel of Progress, it was one of the first attractions I was ever able to do when I went to the parks as a small child. It has a good song, impressive animatronic figures, and overall a great message and look at the past. Had you asked 10 year old me if she thought that we would have VR and voice activated technology, she honestly would have told you no, but we do. How Walt knew what our "future" would hold is beyond me. I love this show and hope that it's fate is not the same as the one in California.

I love the carousel of progress, it was the first attraction that I rode when I arrived at Magic Kingdom in 1988, for me Is imperdonable to go to Magic Kingdom and not to visit it.

Joey Martinez It doesn’t seem necessary for the talent of Mel Blank to do that role, but maybe any other actor just wouldn’t do it as good.

And there's another veteran from Mel Blanc's era you won't find too much elsewhere at Disney, Janet Waldo, ironically, not doing the 1940s teen girl Jane,m but the Mother! (Mel's the parrott, too.)

I know it would never happen, (and especially tough now that Jean Shepherd is gone) - I've always wished they could build a Second COP right next door. Return the original final scene to the 1960's, then have the guests move to Part 2 to showcase the 1980's, 2000's, and then the future 2020's. Still even leaves room for the 2040's.

Really interesting, as usual!! :) I am so interested in movie memorabilia that was reused in the parks. I was told by a cast member that the robins outside of the window in the first scene of CoP were the actual ones used in the film Mary Poppins! And the spaceship on top of "Cool Ship" in Tomorrowland is the one used in Flight of the Navigator! I'd love to see a video on this stuff :D

I think it’s only a matter of time where WDI gets to work on revamping COP. Perhaps for WDW’s 50th? I’m hoping we get to see the final act receive something on a grand scale.

I really love Carousel of Progress. I am kind of surprised that it has lasted as long as it has. It's been around as long as I have. I was born in 1964. Even though Disney keeps changing to add new attractions, it is nice to see some of the old standbys. For now. But I do agree it does need some updating. ❤️❤️

BJ Ward is also best known for being the original voice of Velma

    • @katereilly2472
      @katereilly2472 3 роки тому

The original voice of Velma is actually Nicole Jaffe, BJ Ward is the 5th person to voice the character and is probably the voice many 90s kids know as Velma because of the late 90s early 00s animated films, starting with Zombie Island.

I, too, was at the original Carousel of Progress at the NY Worlds Fair in 1964 and did not see the show again till I first went to Disney World in 2001. I never knew any other song, but "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" and even 37 years later I still knew all the words. Great video, TPM. Can't wait to check out all you mentioned the next time I go.

Yes indeed - the original from the 1960s made more sense since there was a 20 year jump between each act: 1900 to 1920s to 1940s to 1960s. Now it jumps from 1940s to 2000s - they need to add more acts for 1960s, 1980s, 2000s, 2020s, etc. The last act 4 update was done in the mid 1990s because they mention the newest tech as "Laser disks and high definition TV" that came out in the 90s. DVDs came out a few years after that and cell phones weren't big yet so aren't referred to there.

The final act should be updated where everyone had a smart phone and it's completely silent because everyone is checking their social media accounts and the skill of conversation has faded into the past.

Loved this video! It’s always great to learn about Disney attractions I don’t necessarily know a lot about. As to the question of whether or not they’ll update it, sadly, my gut tells me they won’t. I think if it ever gets so outdated that it needs refurbishment to stay relevant, they’ll just close it. Especially since they already closed/made it seasonal before. Luckily, VR is still relatively new technology (especially as portrayed in the ride), so I think that element alone will keep it relevant for a while, despite the clothing and furniture present. Also, it’s great to see a ride get saved from the brink - you don’t see that too often! (Come to think of it, that could be a cool video idea - exploring rides that have been made seasonal and eventually closed or re-opened year round. It could be interesting to look at why some rides are saved, while others are not.) In summary - great video, as always!

Another great video! And this is something that I'd really love to see, and I usually just go on rides, so it was great to get extra info on it. I think Disney World will need to update the last scene soon, as much as things have changed it would be a good idea to do that to see what they might come up.
