  • The "mean" looking Native American is a trope in Hollywood and the media. It's used so much we Native American's often make fun of it. We cover some memes related to that! Bearsun Visits the Navajo Nation as well!

So funny story that happened to my dad at a powwow. We are eating lunch, he's still wearing his traditional wear and a lady walks up and says, I didn't know Indians ate hotdogs. My dad looks at me and says, that was a buffalo leg. She didn't know what to do after that. Like don't people get we are human of today and we even shop at stores for food and clothes? It's funny I can't help it

Most people with common sense understand that. I will tell you that in most public schools they hardly ever teach us about how Native Americans live today in fact they really only bring up native tribes when referencing colonial wars. I know a lot of people who still think that Native Americans act in a stereotypical way because that’s all they’ve been taught.

My Cherokee Dad sat stoically in his chair every night of my life. Mom always said we have to watch the westerns because that's what he likes. He never said anything. When I was in high school he said, " Can we watch that show where the guy steals stuff?" (It Takes A Thief) Mom and I nearly fell off the couch. "There are no horses in that show." He didn't answer. My Great grandmothers were featured on the cover of "The Book of Elders, The life stories & wisdom of great American Indians," published in 1994, and on it they were shown as these stoic grandma's, I later found out that they didn't like the photographer because of that picture, it was not how they usually took pictures together. Plus he would ask inappropriate questions and made a lot of ignorant statements. Anyway, our family photos show them all side by side smiling, laughing or singing together, there was hardly any of them looking all stern like that, and you can see the irritation in their eyes too. One of them even refused to speak English in front of him, and she only did that with people she didn't like. I miss them

I went to grade school with a lot of Navajo and Hopi (I'm white). Well on buffalo burger day, I was the last in line and they ran out right at me. I was the only one who did not get buffalo burger.. They were all getting stickers to celebrate and everything. I was so upset to be left out, A lunch attendant approached to comfort me and offered me a 'sticker'. I wasn't having any of it, and after arguing with her, I felt a tear coming on. I was hurting but the irony of the white kid crying about buffalo was not lost on me. I sat back down and made the 'stoic' face letting the tear come down my chin. When my indigenous friends saw this, I stared into the distance and said 'the buffalo...' Laughter erupted! I made a few new friends that day. That was almost 40 years ago - so people have been clowning that stereotype for a long time!
