    Good tutorial, will try (since I just started my 3dsmax and corona adventure all goes sloooowlyy :)) But one question-can you eventually make (or maybe yu did, I just did't find it) similar material tutorials using corona phycal material from, for example, corona 11? This is like corona legacy, which one can still use but I'm having difficulties with, so to say "translations" alle the features from this tutorials to the newest wersion and would like to learn the newest.... greets

    Great explanation! can you explain the material assigning in compact material editor?

  • @gottagowork
    @gottagowork 4 роки тому +2

    I'm not really into archviz in the traditional sense, and my software is Blender using it's Cycles engine. Just to set the background.
    When you used your finger, you're showing subsurface scattering rather than the translucency. A piece of translucent paper would have been better.
    Translucency (in Cycles) is nothing more than simple Diffuse shader for backfacing faces, and it makes more sense for thin geometry (I use thin curtains).
    In Cycles, SSS doesn't work for thin geometry, and for thick geometry it lights up the backside but light doesn't pass through it. Its shadow is solid, and surface don't re-emit light.
    For closeups of thin geometry with a "hole pattern" in the texture, you may want to make holes solid based on viewing angle to make up for lack of thickness.
    Normally, I let the Diffuse get the texture color, while Translucency gets a darker and more saturated version, depending on the "thickness" of the material.
    As light passes through more material, it's absorption color gets more and more picked up with distance traveled - so darker and more saturated.
    There shouldn't be a reason for back and front facing faces to receive different treatment. Except IOR may need to be inverted for the back face, depends on the implementation.
    Test this on a solid black curtain with fresnel glossy. If both sides go reflecting at glancing angles, you're okay. If you get snells window on the back side, IOR needs to be inverted.
    If you use bump mapping, you may want to check bump behaves correctly on both sides and make up for it if it don't.
    The setup I guess is okay for simple cotton based curtains, but for some fabrics you may need to think differently:
    Velvet, velveteen, and directional napped fabrics can be a nightmare even on diffuse. I'm unable to simulate nap direction in Cycles, not sure how good Corona/V-Ray are.
    Silk may require double anisotropic glossy with angles as specified in the weave pattern. I tend to use Askhimin-Shirley distribution for this rather than GGX.
    Polyester curtains may require rough refraction in a special way. For thin geometry I use incoming normal to prevent any light bending while roughness still works.
    We don't have light groups/lists or light exclusion in Cycles, so there are some Corona/V-Ray lighting tricks that are completely unavailable for us atm.

    Hello! it would be wonderful if you make a video about the difference in work with materials in vray and corona. because I decided to switch to Corona , and it’s extremely difficult to figure out after vray how the materials work here. For example I tried to make a wood material and in vray it's ok but in corona I doing the same and the result is completely different🙈

    Doesn't the falloff relate to the fresnel IOR?

    • @ULZIMAKUM
      @ULZIMAKUM 4 роки тому +2

      For the best result you maust put FallOff map into Translusency slot same ass Opacity slot coz of this effect must be the same way in both. And also you need understand that there are no refraction effect in any fabric coz it have ho light interuption. But some types of fabrics may have refraction if the fabric is made of synthetic yarn. And.. it will be better to not use for VRay any Corona maps as any VRay maps not use for Corona - there are a Composite map instead Corona Mix in 3DsMAX General maps that can be useful without installig any other renderers if you do not want to do this . So that way.

    • @ArchVizArtist
      @ArchVizArtist  4 роки тому

      Mike, falloff map and fresnel IRO are different things. You might confuse them because for example low Fresnel IOR in reflections looks similar to falloff map. ULZIMAKUM, I don't thing it's a good idea to use falloff map in the translucency slot.

    • @ULZIMAKUM
      @ULZIMAKUM 4 роки тому +1

      @@ArchVizArtist try it.. it's a really great one opportunity and it is recommended from official Vray lessons from developers for Vray two sided material shader. So that way.

    • @ULZIMAKUM
      @ULZIMAKUM 4 роки тому +1

      And you can use FallOff map for IOR index if you will change it parameter from parallel/perpendicular to Fresnel... But not in that time, but for correcting IOR for metallic and so on in Reflection/Refraction slot.. So that way.

    • @mikegentile13
      @mikegentile13 4 роки тому

      No. I didn't mean for the reflection. I meant as falloff in the opacity. It gives a nice curve automatically. The index is simply a ratio.

      Nooooooo! we have enough of these trainers online who talk way too fast in their allegedly "beginner" tutorials, skipping all sorts of steps and hitting keys off screen they don't tell you about.
