I swear to God, "Is it about my cube?" is one of the best examples of situational comedy ever written. It cracks me up every time! The way Burns just asks so earnestly and ignorantly about his crushed car, lmao.
Absolutely, it always kills me how quickly Mr. Burns has adjusted to the reality of being a cube owner 🤣
He was getting more and more annoyed throughout until the end when the phone call interrupted his fuming. Then he remembered to ask about his cube because that's what he knew he owned at that point. It was so great at showing his age, and that he would only follow what his assistant told him.
The funny thing is that he innocently thinks there's any hope left for it. What's happened hasn't totally sunk in yet.
It caught me so off guard - I was already thinking about how the "you have 30 minutes to move your cube" is great writing that always gets me, then they came back with another one. People talk about jokes per minute all the time but what's really great about them is the *good* jokes per minute.

To me it also hints at Homer Simpson's undiagnosed autism.
Burns responding "I believe I'll get up" is even funnier with him saying it just before saying "I think I'll go with the fangs today". Both of those lines would've still been funny on their own but not as. They were meant to go together

not gonna lie that is one of the most predictable number I have ever seen, the distance between the two number is only one number apart. And if the number has more than two digit, putting zero is the most cliche move to signifies its enormity.

Mr. Burns is one of the most evil characters on this show, but is still somehow very tolerant/forgiving of mistakes, even more so than real people in lower level management.
the real-life explanation would be hard to use them as a character if you fire is Homer and don't hire him back. in Universe explanation (Smithers, I keep my friends close and my enemy's closer)-Mr. Burns
@@damirbabic8168 The real life explanation is that Burns surprisingly treats his employees well. They get Donuts everyday, exercise as a group, company nights at the ball park, ... yeah, its not that bad working for Mr. Burns at Springfield Nuclear.
@@IDBTitanosaurus That's because he wants to make sure they have a reason not to quit thus costing him losing money because no workers equals no more money. So it's not from kindness it's legit called being pragmatic and practical, someone who's obsessed with making money obviously would do things to make sure their workers have incentive to stay and keep their money flow going. It is also why realistically most movie mob bosses who threaten, bully and constantly kill their own goons over minor errors would ultimately end being assassinated at some point by vengeful goons or they would secretly betray him because why would any sane person want to work for a psycho for money? Money ain't good for taking home if you get killed over breaking a vase by accident.

+James Clayton That is a great bit, and one that I love referencing with my friends. However, I disagree. When the leaf gently floats on top of the dilapidated and on brick school bus, and the school bus explodes. That's the best simpsons bit ever (in my opinion of course).

You gotta give Homer credit. When Smithers has him fill in for him he is working more harder than ever did. I mean yeah he screws up all the time but it's still more work than his usual sleeping at his work station.
It seems like Homer wants to be good at his job, but he was never trained to do it. He screws up only because nobody explained to him what his tasks are. It would be like aliens telling you to fly their spaceship.

I love that Homer suggests getting up or going back to bed and Burns contemplates what to do.

I never saw that scene until I watched this episode on DVD.

This is such a good example of the classic Simpsons. So many jokes in just under 2 minutes.
There's more humor in this 2 minute clip than the last 15 seasons of the Simpsons.

Syuna it may get a laugh or two but it’s more forced and in the first ten seasons they were able to come up with more bits that went well with the flow and they have just run out of those kind of jokes

First he's upset over the fact that his car has been threatened to move, then he slowly realizes that Homer was way too slow to deliver to him the news and slowly becomes more and more upset over Homer's incompetence before wondering about his car-now-turned-cube.

Well, given that Mr. Burns is impossibly old, the fact that he refers to donuts as "ethnic food" may in all reality be factually permissible.
The donut we all know and love today, began with the first Dutch settlers in New England, circa 1640. The then occasional delicacy consisted of crude dough, nuts, (cashews, walnuts), and sliced fruit placed on top. This was history's FIRST donut, (or at least Caucasoid North America's first).
-- Mr. Burns was likely one of those early New World pioneers appropriating a cultural delicacy from 17th century Netherlands.
I didn't know about the Dutch origin, thanks. I do know that most every Southern / Eastern European culture has some sort of deep fried & sugared dough ball or patty, & in Mr Burns formative years, say, pre WW1, there weren't many of those folks in the USA, he would thus consider Donuts, fried dough balls, to be "Ethnic"

Also also keep in mind The Simpsons started in 1989/1990/1991 so Mr Burns' childhood being prior to WW1 would not have been unusual at that time. Both my grandparents on my Dad's side were born just before 1900 & they were alive at that time.

I think this is my all time favourite episode. I know it's not exactly the most sophisticated bit of humour, but the way the cornflakes immediately catch on fire, and Homer's reaction, never fails to make me laugh.

The old animation style was so underrated by the jackasses who decided to change it. Just look at how Burns' eyes change expression with each line about his car Homer reads. That ALONE makes me laugh more than the modern show.

I'd like to report that in the 30 or so years I've been eating such a breakfast, I've never had such an issue. :) That being said, with the way the world is currently going (and my life to a much lesser extent), self-combusting food would rank low on my list of concerns... Unless, of course, it were to result in the faster reduction in available food--in which case, yes, we'd definitely have a problem... ^^

The joke in this scene is simply that Homer is a failure at everything and can't perform a simply task like making breakfast. The cereal catching on fire is just a surreal punchline to accentuate this. You laugh because "lol how did he mess up cereal?" not "haha, Homer's so dumb".
He tried to grill a raw egg on a kebab skewer.. and use the microwave by smashing the glass and sticking his hand in.

The expansive genius of The Simpsons in under 2 minutes. The corn flakes gag floored me as a 10 year old (and still gets a chuckle out of me at 37). Then the more adult subtlety of the “what about my options?” bit. And to top it all off, the age-transcending brilliance of “is it about my cube?”. Unreal.
