  • When a friend bought this new Honda CB1000R , he very kindly asked me to run the bike in for him. Although there are some constraints in reviewing bikes that you can't fully explore , I was delighted to do so.
    I n this video I review the technical specifications of the Honda including the rider technology, aesthetics and finish. We take the bike out for a ride and I then make some closing comments with my initial impressions.
    With such a variety of styles and performance levels available today it is perhaps inevitable that we are are seeing the emergence of ever more categories . Whether a neo (new) sports ,cafe category is required remains to be seen but Honda certainly have the capability to build great engines , smooth gearboxes and well finished bikes. Is this one of them?

    Hello
    Thanks for the video. l am really glad you have graced us once again with one of your videos, which l think is one of the most underappreciated on the internet. l liked your comment about a lady so graciously helping you test the brakes.
    l had a similar situation last week although l was on a bicycle where one thoughtful gentleman decided to help me test my reflexes as well as my composure. Was making my way down the road, after having crested the hill and this section gets fast very quickly, this gentleman decided to lazily turn into my path, he was ahead of me with no signal. Thankfully he was not going too fast. Upon recognising my predicament l tried to lean into the direction he was turning and the thing which surprised me most, was without any thought, l was up on my feet with my pedals parallel to the ground like l wanted to do a bunny hop or something (which l cannot). It went reasonably well, thanks to the car's speed and my actions. l believe l scraped his bumper with my pedals as the car came to a stop with me just making contact and thats about the worst which occurred. So came off a bit chuffed with my reflexes but l do not want anymore tests.
    As for the composure part. All l recall was, l was not making any meaningful communication (foreign country) due to my attempt to gather my thoughts and assess the damage. All in all he eventually asked am l OK and having affirmed that, we parted ways. As it was nighttime l did not see if there was any damage although there should not be any given l have been riding the bike since then with no issues. As it is an old bike 10 years or so, l doubt l would have noticed anyway.
    So the fact that you can make light of what for most is a very stressful situation is something l greatly appreciate after my nearmiss. Scorecard: Reflexes - quite sharp, Composure - must improve.

      I think it is one of the hazards of being on the roads. At that point l was glad l was not on the motorbike. It could have become quite hectic: police, insurance assessors and potentially bigger bills. That is why l usually cycle around the city.

    Greetings from France. I enjoyed your knowledgeable, informative and balanced appraisal of the machine. Being of a certain age, we have a similar attitude to the manner in which bikes should be ridden. I bought one today; it's going to take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. I'm optimistic that being described as a 'Black Edition', it will indeed be black.

      Vraiment noir! It's just arrived. Three hundred gentle kilometers yesterday, and I'm delighted with it. A smooth and flexible engine. I've yet to take it over 5000rpm, beyond which, I gather, I can expect my arms to stretch. The Akrapovic slip-on is still hiding in its box.
      I've heard many complaints about the rear shock. Perhaps my riding style is too modest to expose its alleged defects. Is the cost of a Nitron set up justified? If so, would I be able to fit it myself? Cordialement. @@michaelmam

      I have never ridden a standard bike as Simon had lowered his by the time I got to ride it . I had to be careful with it as it bottomed out . I have since ridden it with Nitrons and it transformed the handling. I guess it depends how you ride ? Personally with that amount of power I would upgrade , but we are all different 👏

    Apart from the quite hideous exhaust, the bike looks really good. I can't think that Honda didn't consider that it would be used for touring; a screen and some soft panniers are all that you'd need for an excellent bike in that regard. I seem to remember another review of the bike, some time ago, which said that the suspension was quite soft. So, the addition of a Nitron shock and fork cartridge, looks like a really good idea. The dash on the bike is exactly the same as the new Hornet and Transalp. Looks good and clear to me and, when I tested the Hornet, it was easy to go between functions. Thanks for the vid.

    Hi Michael. In my case looks are a very important factor in intitially arousing my interest in any bike. Based on this premise the current generation of naked bikes does little for me. However, I was really taken by this bike. In my opinion Honda have really hit the spot. I would be interested to learn how you think it compares to the Z900RS whilst riding with in the confines of the law where I suspect the difference in horse power isn't too important. Great video as usual, thanks.

    • @michaelmam
      @michaelmam  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi , how are you ? I really liked the look of the bike as well , and more so as I spent some time with it .
      When I initially ride a bike , I do tend to ask myself , what does this remind me of , and try and get a feel for the bike . Z900rs didn’t come into my mind but it is a good question ! With significantly more power , even at lower revs , the Honda feels more ZRX ( muscle bike) than RS but IS , like the RS , easy and comfortable to ride at legal speeds . The RS is clearly a tribute bike and has some very distinct styling clues whilst the Honda is a “ reinterpretation” and free to enter new ( neo) areas , both in terms of styling and technology . The 6 speed QS is a good example of that . I think you could happily potter around on the Honda , safe in the knowledge that , if you wanted to press on , it could . Finish wise both bikes initial starting point is good . I suspect the Honda will be harder to keep together ..

      @@michaelmam All good here, thanks. Thank you for the comments. I love my RS it is a great all round bike and is the one in my stable that I look to when I just want to pootle about. But I think you've hit the nail on the head, sometimes when out one's mood changes and the RS doesn't quite have the ability to press on that my other, more sports orientated bikes do.

    The best-looking one-litre JILF. Not a fan of inline fours, although I had a B-King for over seven years. 212 kg is light. The last model CB1000R had a nicer headlight. More traditional. Great new TFT, though. I like the matt denim finish, but it would be a pain to match if you had to spray part of it in event of damage. I never change exhausts. I always worry about upsetting the low-down delivery.

      Glad you found it useful Richard . I am certainly no expert on the temperature tolerance of fork seals but I see no reason why the ones fitted to this bike will be any better or any worse than others of a similar nature . Most bikes have upside down forks now .. we should probably call them right way round now . Storing bikes upright on stands , balancing the pressure on both sides certainly helps ..👍

    • @michaelmam
      @michaelmam  7 місяців тому

      I know what you mean ..
      a couple of comments . Firstly I have never ridden a CB1000r with standard suspension - the bike I rode had been lowered which significantly reduced travel . I definitely didn’t like that !
      Secondly I think a lot of bikes have pretty basic suspension as standard fit . Ridden sensibly they are “ok” . Some riders like to upgrade their suspension and Nitron , Ohlins and many others serve that market . If the manufacturers built to a higher spec initially it would increase costs / prices for something that something that some don’t want ? Easy in the more expensive brands . They build different models of the same engined bike with enhanced brakes and suspension .. like BMW and Ducati ..?
