I've taken a "horsetail" supplement on and off for a few years (I intentionally take breaks from it) and it has absolutely increased the number of hairs that grow. I'm not referring to rapid hair growth, I'm referring to the increase in the number of hairs, very visible at the hairline, and the reappearance of some "baby" hair. It restored my hair to a point where I'm pleased again.
So good to know, thanks for sharing your experience!
How do you structure your break times?

I take food grade Diatomaceous Earth for years now it doesn't taste as chalky as it looks. It's quite pleasant in juice or cold tea. I don't even notice it in food. I put DE in all my pets meals also they get all benefits and we all get a deworming. Which all pet people need.
Oh cool! Do you actually see worms come out? I'm fascinated.
I have DE (contains silica) as well
Been taking Silica for years. My hair was getting thin… huge difference… I take flaxseed oil as well and the two combined work well.
Oh wonderful! Flaxseed is high in ALA omega-3 which is great for hair health - one can consider cycling it on and off or taking every other day because the estrogenic effects, while minor in small amounts, can make a difference if taken daily long term. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Estrogenic effects..thats bad? Why in your opinion?
What are estrogenic effects?
That’s great to hear. I have just ordered some and looking forward to getting started. I have very fine thin blonde hair, post kids and just in menopause it certainly got a lot thinner in the last 20 yrs. Your comment is encouraging 🙏
@@saggie5261 I hope it works for you. Just like you .. fine blond hair that got thinner with menopause.. It takes a while so don’t give up. The addition of the flaxseed oil really helped to. For everyone here, FIJI water has silica in it. It’s why it feels so much smoother to drink. Easy way to get it in your body 🎉

Thank you for sharing this on YT!!! So vital. I have been drinking RO water for decades, I eat a whole real food diet and have for years, mostly carnivore so I have definitely not been getting enough silica in my diet. Age 72. Just had a DEXA scan and there is some bone density loss, hair is thinning, nails are brittle, skin is not so good either. I really can't thank you enough. This information is priceless! One more supplement to add to my daily list of supplements.
Check how much protein you are eating. You need to get at least 1 gram of protein for every pound of health weight. So if you want to weight 120 pounds then you need to eat AT LEAST 120 grams of protein. I started having some of these issues also and was told to check how much protein I was getting. I thought I was getting enough, turns out I was only getting 50 to 60 grams of protein a day. I now eat between 120 to 150 grams in protein. Anyone having hot flashes, night sweets, waking up in the middle of the night? Up the animal fat your taking in....amazing! Don't be afraid of fat peeps I eat 200 grams daily and my hubby knows when I've not had enough fat, he just comes to me with a plate of little butter bits. We are both happy then!!!

Great! I've heard that's a good source of silica - let us know if you notice any benefits!
I take silica, collagen and MSM. My hair is growing so much. Also my eyelashes are getting longer.
Wonderful, this is very helpful to know!
Silica also binds aluminum (according to the work of prof Chris Exley) and we have way too much free aluminum in our environment. I suspect that is why hair loss is on the rise. You can watch a documentary called The Dimming if you are curious about where the free aluminum is coming from.
Yes, silica binds aluminum and mercury and helps detoxify it. Interesting study in humans showed we pee more aluminum and mercury out when we take silica!
@@dr.patriciamillshi, what type of silica should we take for aluminium detox? Is silica dioxide any good? I’ve heard it’s not the best type of silica 🤔
Silicon dioxide should not be used as it can cause gut damage in humans. The research on silica for aluminum detox describes it as silica enriched water which is usually organic silica or orthosilicic acid. I have those on my Fullscript plan with the link in the show notes. Hope this helps! @@user-hr3bk1fz4u
@@dr.patriciamills thank you very much for you silica list!:) I’ve heard the horseradish is rich in silica. Would you recommend it or rather silica supplements you mentioned for aluminium detox?
Oh interesting I had never heard of it! Usually for specific outcomes like a detox it is difficult to say with certainty so it is up to your level of comfort and your personal needs if you want to do foods only or add on the supplements. Hope this helps!@@user-hr3bk1fz4u

Hello, dr. Mills. I'm new to your channel, and I'm happy it popped up as recommendation. After I watched this video I went straight to Amazon to get " Silicea Original Liquid Gel (500mL)".
I'd love to hear your opinion on that, as I had no idea such a thing even existed.
Thank you and take care.
Hi and welcome, so glad you found the channel too! I used to use this product myself, it's very clean, however when I looked into research on silica I was only able to find positive studies on the orthosilicic acid kind. This is the kind I have in Fullscript (see show notes). HOWEVER this does not mean that the Silicea Original Liquid Gel would not work - it very well could be excellent. I just don't have any studies to prove it, so I have switched to the orthosilicic acid kind personally. Hope this helps!

I stopped taking it for a while, and my hair started thinning with aging, so I am back to taking it again! It DOES work! I also take collagen and gelatin capsules. I must be doing something right, I just turned 60, but people many people think I am in my early 40's and act so shocked when I tell them otherwise!
So good to know, thank you!! @@leahartlee29
Me,too! I put a little in my coffee every day. I've also used horsetail tea with success. The horsetail does increase the blood's clotting ability (which I saw vividly proven when I had some dental work done and my blood clotted incredibly fast around my teeeth). I think that the clotting could be an issue for some people, but I've never been sure about that.
That is VERY interesting. I looked it up and horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is an herbal remedy that dates back to ancient Roman and Greek times. It was used traditionally to stop bleeding - which means it could decrease clotting time. As you mentioned, for some people this could be a problem, but I haven't come across evidence that it is. Fascinating, thanks for bringing this to the table!@@deberebor

2 hrs of pressure cooking is better than 24 hrs of slow cooking when making bone broth.
Why is that so, if I may ask. I also have instant pot with slow and pressure cook.
@@muris4923 Yes! Someone actually did experiments comparing methods, time, temps that resulted in the best broths with the best gels. Dr. Mills, I haven't watched the whole video yet because it's bedtime. Can you please tell me if silica can help with androgenetic alopecia? I imagine that it may have to block dht if that is the case, but I may be wrong. Please let me know. I'm getting overwhelmed...thanks!
Hmmm that's a great question and the answer is I don't know for sure. There are interesting studies in androgenetic alopecia involving silica, quercetin, zinc, and in some studies it is injected into the hair loss area. How does silica compare to collagen? I am 60 and take supplements of collagen. Will the collagen and silica complement or cancel out each other?
Great question! Collagen is the major structural component or building block of connective tissue in your body, and is found in high concentrations in cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone, teeth, skin, hair and nails. Silica, on the other hand, is an essential nutrient needed to help produce collagen in your body. Taking both should complement and not cancel each other out!
Such a very interesting video. My question. You say to use the orthosilicic acid form of silica. Yet the kind you recommend by Dr. Mercola says it contains monomethylsilanetriol (MMST) from Living Silica. It does not mention the orthosilicic acid form. Are they the same? What am I not understanding? Thanks so much for your help with this.
Hi, great question! It was hard to find a good quality orthosilicic acid supplement that did not have unwanted added ingredients that could harm gut health. MMST has also be studied and shown to increase silicon pools and to be well tolerated and safe. I'll keep looking for one that is orthosilicic acid and clean and will update it on Fullscript when I find one! Great question, thank you!
Dr. Christopher Exley has done extensive research on silica and he says to drink 1 liter of Figi water within 1 hour for 13 days to detox aluminum to prevent altzheimers. Also, Dr. Dennis Crouse has developed a recipe for making your own silica water for pennies.
Any particular brand recommendation ?

If I am taking HPCC, should I take also Silica, or is enough of it in HCPP already? Or indeed, as Silica creates collagen, could I just not take HCPP? Thanks for your feedback in advance!
Hi! I am assuming you mean collagen (want to make sure you are on the same page on what HPCC stands for :). Silica has more functions than just creating collagen, so for me I look for separate sources of silica as well, either through food or supplementation. Hope this helps!
@@dr.patriciamills Yes, of course, I meant Hydrolyzed Collagen Protein Peptides ("HCPP"), hence of the changes - autocorrect being what it is. Perhaps you abbreviate it differently; e.g. "HCP". Our cattle builds lime at the bottom , after some time ; so i am not sure if that has anything to do with silica.....
Does stress destroy the silica in our body?
How much silica do we need daily (from water and food sources) to get a beatiful , healthy hair?
I'm asking many questions!
It must be overwhelming to answear so much mail!😅
Thank you Dr. patricia

P.S.
For your cough ,
in 2 cups of water boil:
a lemon rind , ginger , 2 black peppers , 2 cloves (must crush the tops), after five minutes , remove from stove, cover and let it rest for another five minutes, sweeten with honey and drink it hot.
Repeat till the cough gets cured.
The secret is 'lemon rind' , i learn from my Father , when i was a teenage......
Its the best cough medicine!
Hello, and thank you SO MUCH for the cough remedy! I will definitely give it a go :) With respect to your questions, 1. there is no easy at home test for silica in water, there are expensive equipment that can be purchased to determine; 2. silica is a mineral so boiling water does not destroy it; 3. I was unable to find any information on what happens to silica in the human body in times of stress (interesting question!), and 4. It is hard to say exactly how much silica is needed for healthy hair as it depends on various factors like your health status, your nutrient intake, your water silica content, etc. The research cited was done on 6-10mg of silica but whether more would be better is unknown! Hope this helps!
Would you please just tell the name and company of the silica you recommend?
I'm technically challenged and don't do all these apps and sign up for all these other things. I desperately want to start taking it but want the best one. Having severe hair issues in this last year.
Make your own silica water using Dr. Dennis Crouse recipe or do what Dr. Christopher Exley suggests. He says to drink 1 liter of Figi water within 1 hour for 13 days.
Any kind with MMST or orthosilicic acid is proven to work - and what is available depends on your country! AOR is a good brand for most (but not all) supplements, and Dr. Mercola has a pretty good option too :) Hope this helps!
I really wish both of these doctors understood that food grade diatomaceous earth is SiO2 and once you put DE into your food or take it directly following a meal it gets converted to SiO4 aka orthosilicic acid and this is taken up into the bloodstream and used by every cell in your body. The body is far smarter and far and away more resourceful than it's given credit. Some day they will see the truth of what I am saying.
I do not see Silica supplements on your FullScript. What are your recommendations?
I put the direct link in the show notes to the Silica - did it not work for you?
I wonder what she would think of algae based silica
First time I've heard about it, sounds interesting and is probably environmentally friendly in terms of harvesting - not sure how well it would work for us, I'll see if I can find any studies :)
🍺 has silica? That would explain why alcoholic homeless men have such great hair!

What is more beneficial, biotin or silica? Thanks.
They work in completely different ways to support health - biotin is a vitamin and silica is a mineral. Both work best when taken together either through a whole foods diet or supplements. There are many nutrients that support whole body health, this is a deep dive on silica. Hope this helps!

Fiji water is good
Good to know, thanks!
I hear that some people drink diatomaceous earth (food grade) is that good ? or safe ??
I honestly don't know! I did a search of the literature and was only able to find one potentially relevant study that suggests it could be harmful, but this definitely requires further study! Here's the research paper: Rabovsky J. Biogenic amorphous silica. Scand J Work Environ Health. 1995;21 Suppl 2:108-10. PMID: 8929705.
What is the difference between Diatomaceous earth and silica?
There are various kinds of silica. The kind in DE is crystalline silicon dioxide. The kind studied for hair, bones and skin is orthosilicic acid. There are many kinds beyond this, much potential for future research!
@@dr.patriciamills does that mean the crystalline is from shells and the ORTHO is from bone
If so, how would they isolate it
Sorry I'm not sure this is not my area of research, I simply relate the results from research studies! Great questions :) @@mitchellwintercat
Actually food grade diatomaceous earth is amorphous freshwater sourced only and is the remains of diatoms also known as algae and they are the greatest source of pure opal silica in the world. This is the direct opposite of calcined or crystalline silica which was crystalized with extreme heat treatment and it closely akin to asbestos so yes you would never advocate for ingestion of a known cancer causing agent that would kill someone as that would most definitely be unethical. I think the fact that they are not clear on which one they are referring too is the biggest problem. So I see the reason for this confusion is their lack of transparency. Pool filter material should never be used. I wouldn't even use it in a pool. But food grade diatomaceous earth is less than one tenth of a percentage of crystalline silica and that's why it carries the food grade designation and certification. Emphasis on food grade.
Diatomaceous earth!!
I'll look into this, thanks!
@dr.patriciamills
In another reply here to a comment, you say no to DE as it has silica dioxide. So, yes or no?
I do not have a definite opinion on DE, it has silicon dioxide and I found a study that it can hurt human gut health so for now I would say no and I am always open to new information :) Hope this helps! @@kimfroman2023
@@dr.patriciamillsNot true, I have been using food grade DE as a parasite cleanse and for overall gut health health. It's wonderful for me and many others who take food grade Diatomaceous earth.

Tried to order it I live in the UK and looks like I can’t change the settings to add a UK address ! 😏
Sorry! You're right, it only works in Canada or the US using the link appropriate for each country! You can use it as a shopping list locally - look for MMST or orthosilicic acid with no added silicon dioxide!
What about Diatomaceous earth as a clean source for Silica?
It's a different kind of silica in DE than that in these studies mentioned, and I have not yet found research in humans on the safety/efficacy of DE - hope this helps!

Where can I buy this Silica Supplement?
Hi! Check the show description, I have the links there :)
Any particular brand you recommend ? Can be costly
I found some great options that I put into the Fullscript link you can find in the show notes! Hope this helps :) If you just want to maintain hair health, silica containing foods can be enough - but for faster improvement then the supplement investment could be worthwhile.
why is silica dioxide bad. I was surprised to see it in my solgar supplement. Is it harsh on the stomach and gut ? I saw this somewhere else where silica dioxide can be hard on the stomach so I now have a liquid organic silica with powdered bamboo extract. and its got an easy assimilation comment on the label. Its liquid and I am going to give it a try. Thanks for the advice.
Good idea! I came across one study showing that silicon dioxide caused gut inflammation and so I became more careful with choosing supplements that don't contain it :) liquid forms are usually the best absorbed, glad you found a good one!
What brand of liquid silica are you taking?
Currently I don't take liquid silica but when I did I used the Hubner Silicea Gel :)
Does anyone know what silica she is suggesting? I couldn’t find it in fullscript
Thanks for letting me know, I modified the settings and it should be there for you to find in the Community Plants. Hope this helps!
What about Bamboo silica? Is that a good form of silica to help all of the things you mentioned in this video?
I haven't found studies specifically on bamboo silica however it's not to say it wouldn't work, I just can't say with certainty that it would :)
Yes have bn taking the bamboo tea for a month now. My hair growth is something else. So bamboo works
How soon after taking Silica Supplement will I see a difference in my hair growth?
Depends on your unique physiology, if no change after 3-6 months then it's not likely to work!

I heard that Brazil nuts are also high in silica. Can you confirm please?
Brazil nuts have the highest content of silica compared to other nuts, however exactly how much I was not able to find. Because they are high in selenium one should limit to 3 servings of 3-4 nuts max per week so not sure if that would provide enough silica on its own. Hope this helps!
@@dr.patriciamills I thought selenium was good for detoxifying the liver and beneficial for other mineral and vitamin absorption???
Yes but you can overdose hence the maximum amount of brazil nuts recommended @@sappir26
@@dr.patriciamills how many Brazil nuts does one need to consume for it to become an overdose of selenium? Brazilians eat them all the time and from what I've learned each nut contains different amounts of selenium depending also from which area they are picked. What would be a safe amount to eat daily for let's say a month? I normally eat 2-3 a day.
Hi! I am a Brazilian living in Canada (woohoo!) and while we do like to eat brazil nuts most of us usually do not eat them daily. While you look up the recommended maxiumum amount and how much there is per brazil nut, given that personal needs vary and how much is in each nut varies, it is difficult to say with certainty. Likely 2-3 a day is probably fine, however keep an eye out for signs of toxicity.Symptoms of selenium toxicity include nausea; vomiting; nail discoloration, brittleness, and loss; hair loss; fatigue; irritability; and foul breath odor (often described as “garlic breath”). Nobody has 300-700 grams and not even 300 to 700 mg's(milligrams). Even 300 mg's is insane. The most I've seen out there is around 35 mg(milligrams not grams).
