  • British guy tries Filipino balut for first time on a Cebu City food tour Philippines. Alex tried traditional Filipino snack balut and pig brains which is a fertilised egg as well a pig brains on a food tour with local Filipino people.
We explore some of the best (and worst) of the food in the Philippines with Lechon, Siomai, Tuslob Buwa and Balut thanks to our local friends Lou and Shannon.

This is probably the funniest Philippines vlog you've made, so far. It was nice seeing you mingling with locals. As for the balut, we usually say, "You really haven't experienced the Philippines 'til you've had a taste of balut," heheh! Looking forward to the next travels ... Bohol and Siquijor Islands. Take care! :)

Honestly, no. Thailand, China, or Japan have strong Buddhist traditions, and thus have plenty of vegetarian cuisine. The Philippines is predominantly Catholic, so lots of meat and fish in everything. There are some vegetarian dishes, but they're not as elaborate as the "fake meat" of first world countries or the tofu dishes of East Asia. Mostly salads, breads, etc. But there's also a ton of fresh fruit. My recommendation is to look specifically for vegetarian restaurants, as regular restaurants don't usually have vegetarian options. The good news is that there are usually vegetarian places near tourist areas and in big cities.

Balut is like 3 in 1 coffee, you have 1) flavorful broth, 2) hard boiled egg), and 3) a duck nugget. It also gives you energy and “stamina”. Best chased with the alcohol of your choice.

Emma you should try these next time: tortang talong (grilled eggplant and cooked like an omelette, that is, if you don't mind eating eggs), fresh lumpia, talong (eggplant) salad, adobong kangkong, ginataang gulay (veggies with coconut milk) and ask specifically for ones with no meat, laing (the one with no meat), puso ng saging salad (banana blossom), in Cebu try the ngo hiong (like a fried lumpia but in a different wrap with bamboo shoots inside it), tinunuang gabi (tinunuan and ginataan means it has coconut milk), etc. These are just few examples of vegetarian food in the philippines. Just ask the locals and tell them you are vegetarian. You can even ask for stir-fried veggies with tofu in it. And for snacks you can try the banana fritters or banana cue. Enjoy!
