I always enjoy when you get into the facts and show technical data. This is an issue that needs that.
One of the best breakdowns on this stuff I've seen! Thank you so much for going off data and knowledge instead of just chasing rage clicks! This channel is the real deal!
Information backed with data and facts. What more does one want. Excellent informative video.
Really good analysis buddy! Good work 👍
Thanks for the visit
It was cool to see some log info from a stock engine. Thanks for sharing.
You bet!
Great video as always speedy. It's great that you have all this data collected it can help out a few guys for sure !!!
Great job of sharing facts and numbers, not just bashing the car for views!
Great video with some common sense and data to back it up. After all they been 3.0 Whipple boosting this same 6.2 hellcat engine for a while. It’s a shame this video will only get a few views while the negative videos will get 10 times the views with absolutely no useful info. It’s just a bunch of fear mongering and people after the clicks. Nice job on this video man!
I stay with gen2 426 style hemis. My duster has ran in 8.40’s with 426 and 4 speed.
Only video I actually learned about what’s going on with these cars, excellent work. I agree with all your comments. 👍🏽
Thanks alot for this great knowledge
Wow you get "those" comments here too! Have to wonder do some people just search for videos to post hate on lol
Great Video!
Thanks!
Excellent video! Very refreshing to hear observations from an engineer/owner.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this video, and your nice update on all that has been floating out there about the Demon 170 and its engine. I agree that the "drama" over this car is a bit out of control, and, quite frankly, nothing short of silly at this point. For some, it seems more like "hatred" of the Demon 170 and owners rather than simple disagreement and comment. Infact, some days I feel like I am watching the movie "Mean Girls" with my daughter. LOL. In any case, I agree with the vast majority of what you have shared in your clip. However, I must disagree with your somewhat dismissiveness (like RacerX) of the 1,500 Dodge required break-in period. First, Dodge had no reason to put that break-in requirement in the Demon 170 manual unless they believed it would help avoid engine failures. And, afterall, Dodge built these 1,000 HP plus engines so if anyone knows whats best for break-in, its the builder of the actual engine. Second, the handful of Demons with engine failures I have leaned about to date were all dragged at about 500 miles, and not after the required 1,500 mile break-in period. Dodge warns of engine failure in that exact scenario (i.e., failure to follow the 1,500 mile break-in schedule), and that is exactly what appears to be happening. Lastly, I have seen no evidence that explains why 500 miles is univerally sufficient to break-in high HP engines. Just because that has been a common practice in the past does not mean its the best practice. Even Lexus today requires a 1,000 miles break-in period for many of their cars today, and none of those Lexus engines come close to approaching 1,000 HP plus. So, until the evidence indicates otherwies, I would suggest sticking with what the engine builder tell owners to do, and stack the small number of actual Demon 170 engine failures to owner error, and not engine builder error. However, if we start to see Demon 170s that were broke in the full 1,500 miles with failures my opinion will certainly change. And, to date, there have been ZERO failures in that regard from what I can find on-line. Lastly, one UA-camr has recently suggested ithat if 500 miles is not sufficient to break-in the Demon 170 engine, all other Demon 170s that were dragged at 500 miles should have failed as well. Of course, you could make that same argument for engines in all cars that do not fail where NO break-in period is followed from the delivery date. I would equate that type of logic to Russian Routlette - sometimes you get lucky. And, even if you are lucky, who knows how long an engine broken-in incorrectly will last or how long it will hold comparable and acceptable compression accross all 8 cylinders. I guess time will tell, and opinions will continue to vary. But thats why these discussions are helpful. To consider other points of views and opinions.
If the break-in procedure in the manual were specific to the 170 I'd tend to agree, but it is literally cut and paste from every SRT vehicle.
Speedy, Rich Scotto here.... we missed you at the Bowling Green NMCA event.... other than being rained out on Sat, it was a great time..... The gentleman with the silver 170 that you showed was parked across from us. One of the guys in our group actually caught a glimps of a fire in the engine bay that he wasn't aware of and they were able to put it out otherwise things would have ended much worse for him. As you said, he found out later that week that the engine failure was covered under warranty....
I hated to miss that race and was REALLY looking forward to it, but just didn't wanna hang out in the rain or take a chance on getting caught driving home on the drag radials.
@@SpeedysGarage more than understood!
The dealer won't re gap the plugs unless there is a misfire code, and they have to drive the car to duplicate the misfire. The other thing you need to remember is that your car may not have a misfire right now @ .032, however, that gap will increase with run time. If that car starts to misfire due to spark blowout, you will destroy the cats. That car that kicked a rod could have had a bad cat due to misfire, and it kicked a rod due to excessive back pressure.
They don't have to drive the car to duplicate the issue. If a code is present that's enough. Depending on relationship with the customer I bet a lot can just get it done with simply asking.
Less ignition timing does not mean higher cylinder temps it’s higher egt cause the hot gasses are escaping out the exhaust. The later you ignite the fuel the more egt which is how we spool turbo cars better my starting at lower timing at lower boost spool area
You're right.
Very well done. You hut all the high points. Keep the good information coming.
thank you i’m about to break mine in was waiting for all of this drama to settle and find out what’s what first you added a lot of clarity 🙏🏻😎
Solid video dude
As always thank you for your information, going to check gaps on mine 👍
Good stuff right there as always . Thanks 😊
Great video as always 😎. It was a solid breakdown of all that stuff!
Glad your back🔥love the tutorial videos...keep up they great videos
Excellent video !
Excellent review!
Great Video
Thanks!
Great video. Thanks for providing the Data logs and oil analysis. Real data is the truth police. Be interested to see what the injector and timing data logs look like on Sunoco 260 GT. 👍
Injector would be fine since Sunoco 260GT is just race gasoline, however the timing would still be a problem. It would be around 2-3 deg at 4,000 RPM and 21psi of boost so still making a LOT of heat in the motor.
Great information
Hope all works out well on your 170 it just sucks that you have to have that in the back of your mind of a possible failure point it’s sad cause the 6.2 platform has been modified beyond a lot of safe points and did well and proved itself as a well built engine how they shanked a few is sad the 170 should be the pinnacle of perfection and maybe it is too much BS to sort thru enjoy it and take the bumps and bruises that may come along thanks for your honest thoughts good luck speedy!!!!
Suprising that you should not run WOT passes with 93 Octane. Don't have a Demon but I would be concerned about leaving the car sitting for long periods with E85 in the tank due to to it's hydrophillic nature. Would store it with 93 Octane which is not based on any data, just past history on E85 cars and some injector issues from it being a good cleaner of engine deposits (and sometimes the deposits end up in filters or injectors). Knew you would provide some good data logging and technical details as always. Sure you are not done digging and if others have issues perhaps that will provide some information for further analysis. Good explanation of the oiling system and your data to support that oil starvation should not be occurring. Internet experts have all but concluded that it needed to be a dry sump system - apparantly not the case.
I can drive year round here, so I don't have to worry with storing, but I do run a few gallons of 93 through to keep things "clean" as you mentioned. Just now WOT when 93 is in the tank.
I assumed the electronic by pass bled boost on 93 octane to around 14. I would have never guessed they are running that much forced air on regular pump fuel.
Yep, definitely should have tied it to the bypass. No idea why they didn't unless they just ran out of time.
These cars hold 7.5qts of oil in the pan and system (mid hash). That combined with pan design eliminate any chance of starvation.
What?
GREAT informational video. Thank you, Speedy!
What mixture fuel do you use at what mileage racing or just cruising? Thank you
Ps- luv your Destroyer grey DEMON170 shirt. Would like to order a few! 😎🇺🇸
Great video. Question. Did you have any misfires on 93 octane.
Im in Canada. E85 isn't around. I dont hit WOT, but I have passed some cars and it after the Demon kicks down, I have seen 17 pounds of boost at about one third maybe half throttle. Do you see any issues with that. Is it just WOT you think things get bad on pump gas.
Im running 94 octane. Thanks
Awesome video....but the reason I think is a rushed vehicle product and definitely quality control. Stellantis rushed this vehicle, putting pressure to release it. And many were definitely poorly assembled. The redeye and superstock and 2018 demon are a better buy. Most were chasing that 1025 HP number.... I think the demon 170 in my opinion, is overpriced shit.
I don't believe there were misfires, however I wouldn't use much throttle at all on pump gasoline. You can order 55 gallon drums of E85 to mix in. Kind of a pain to store, but better than an engine issue.
At MSRP they were a good deal considering a standard Redeye was $100K at the same time, however with the markups definitely over priced IMO.
I was wondering, is catalytic converter over temp protection events a concern for demon 170 owners robbing them of power like it does on hellcats? Would you be interested in showing your data logs and fuel type used during a track event?
Surprisingly, I've not seen COT kick in AT ALL on this car, even on drag runs. Those more detailed logs and fuel type etc will be shared with channel members only.
@@SpeedysGarage would you have a direct comparison between your stock hellcat’s data logs compared with your stock 170’s by chance? Would be interesting to see the hot lap comparison between the two. Thanks for your time.
I would return the car/demand a recall and fix if I can’t go WOT on 93. Remember e85 is not available everywhere in America
You can order drums of E85 but yeah storing them could be a problem. Shame they didn't do something better with the gasoline side of the tune.
Would cylinder temperature be potentially lower with E90 versus E85?
Not enough to matter and definitely not if the fuel system can't keep up with the extra ethanol.
The 170 is a drag/strip car not a 'track' car so i would hope they meant drag strip use when they wrote track, obviously not a Z06 for handling purposes however you could be right if they get too many engine failures it's an out for them.
The trans brake and launch control features are unlocked at 500 miles. If the break-in period is 1,500 miles, why are the features unlocked at 500?
I'm not getting alerts like I should.
: (
Is it safe to add 1-2 gallons of E85 when you fill up with 93oct pump gas on a stock hellcat? If it is safe, would there be any benefit with just the addition of 1-2 gallons of E-85?
No.
@@SpeedysGarage Thank you for your input and time, Sir.
Good information video Speedy! Was your oil level over full from factory? Mine looks to be a quart or more over the full mark. Heard others having same thing.
Where did you get your shirt from? I like the color. Thanks and keep making great vids 🙌
Mine was the same, I changed the oil and drained the oil cooler. Re filled with 7 quarts, it's now right at the top of the cross hatched area.
Yes, you can see what mine looked like in the oil change video.
@@SpeedysGarageI must be getting to old lol. I now remember watching that oil change video. Actually watched it twice. Must have had a brain fart. I’m changing mine today to get the oil level corrected and also using the SRT filter. Why they didn’t come with the SRT filter is beyond me 🤦🏼♂️
I can't remember what I had for breakfast lol
One word........Mexico
what do u think of boostane demon 170 race fuel
Boostane 170 Fuel is simply E85 in a can marketed to Demon 170 owners. Probably fine, but I wouldn't run it full strength E85 for the reasons mentioned in the video.
Isn’t that Curt dusterhoff demon 170?
No. Larry Rose.
Maybe build the engines right , bearings missing and other issues , some work for dodge some know the real deal not guess
Seems like the Demon 170 is a fragile car.
What makes you think that
Really champion plug lol?? Such a poor company to use. A plug with same equivalent plug like ngk is far more reliable. Engine imbalance under high load can definitely hurt rod bearings over time.
170 is junk, my Mach 1 has not had a misfire once running 3 years with lots of 8krpm pulls on e85.
A hand built chrysler engine?🤣 It's amazing ANY junk ass chrysler holds up with the quality they are LET ALONE A PERFORMANCE CAR!!!🤣🤣🤣
If you really think a 1000 hp engine will last like a 300 hp engine, you need a new brain.
They shouldn't have even given razer x one, when all he does is drive.
Race cars need mechanics.
I think they were hoping most people would void their warranty, but knew they'd be replacing some.
Some will spend their life with people just looking at them.
LOL
@@SpeedysGarage somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed....and fell off the bed and hit their head. 😂 what a noob comment.
Old-school race cars need mechanics to run these times. These cars were oe built for this.
