I equate Nick Drake to Van Gogh... not real popular in their own time, but true masters of their craft leaving pure gold for future generations.
Well said!
Thank you so much for this lesson. Just a heads up for any comment readers, in case you were confused: the tuning is CGCFCE without the capo!
Thanks again, Jon.
Thank you for sharing this tutorial for Pink Moon with us. From arguably one of the most creative and unique guitarists to have walked this earth. Loved the floating guitar chord charts and the emphasis on certain techniques and Fret movements that can be very difficult to follow/understand via observation. Keep up the great work fellow guitar geek 😊🤘🏿🔥
Kind regards,
Blessings,
Ethan.
thank you Ethan! I am working on a Nick Drake series!
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween can't wait 🙌🏿💯
Simple, easy to follow tutorial of a masterpiece. Thank you!
Thank you, Andrew! Another Nick Drake tutorial just dropped!
Awesome lesson, please do more Nick Drake! :)
Great job Jon!
Wow not saying there isn't real music but nothing like this as it's unique in its own way. Thanks alot sir
Love the tutorial, I hope that you make more!
Great lesson
Great job 🚀🍻🤴
great job mate. I always have trouble figering how to play nick drake songs and that took me 2 mins to learn! Now to find one of these things first :) Thanks btw
Thank you Sebastian! He was a terrific artist, it is fun figuring out how he created his sounds.
Thanks for sharing this tutorial for a Nick Drake classic. One smaller point: tone. As Josh Turner showed in a lengthy analysis of the Nick Drake sound, Nick was probably using very dead nickel strings that contribute a lot to the unique quality of his sound.
Absolutely, and while I am focusing on the technical compliments, his tone is absolutely key to his style and sound.
Thanks for posting this! Definitely subscribing for more lessons 😎
Thanks for the sub!
Good teaching!
Someone asked me to back then on this tune, it would have taken me forever without ya. Thanks
No problem! Glad it worked for you

ty u man great teach
My pleasure Emmanuel! Thinking of doing a part II to further explain things. Was there anything you felt I left out?
Thanks you
Jon Paul, easily the best tutorial on Pink Moon I've found. I'm interested in how you figured out the tuning.
Thank you! I need ideas for my next video, any requests?
Thank you! I can not remember how I learned the tuning Drake commonly uses, I think I looked it up somewhere, but you have to always adjust by ear because he never used a tuner!
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween I have had a particularly difficult time with Peter Gabriel's Salisbury Hill. Just counting it confuses me. The same with a lot of the old Pretender's stuff. I believe I have a decent grasp of 4/4, 3/4 and 6/8 along with the Diddly beat but anything outside of that. . . I just more or less limp along with Pete on that one.
I like your teaching style. I've been trying to figure out Pink Moon forever and thanks to you know that I have I've discovered a lot less folks are familiar with it than I expected.
I appreciate how much hard, creative work you must put into this.
I know this because I make my living selling advertisement for my website. It's a challenge because I report pretty much only on agricultural irrigation in California. It's a multi billion dollar facet of an even bigger multi billion dollar ag industry. It's all about creativity. It'd probably bore you to tears but if you want to take a look go to www.WaterWrights.net God bless and Merry Christmas, Don
@@TheNitsua59 Hello Don! Thank you so much for your comments! I will take a look at your waterwrights website, looks interesting! I will check out the Peter Gabriel tune you mention and see if I can help with the rhythm. Merry Christmas!
thank you so much
My pleasure!
Great. I go online to learn this song and wow, 8 minutes is all it takes. THANK YOU for taking the time to share this.
Edit: Now I realise this could actually take a while bcos it's really hard to get the timing of the voice to fit with the syncopated strum. Anyone else have this issue?
Glad you found it helpful! Any requests?
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween how about "Been smoking too long" (also Nick Drake)? I reckon it's his bluesiest song.
thanks

Just wanted to say thank you! Excellent teaching and production quality. New sub!
Hey thanks so much! Any tunes you would like to learn or hear on my channel?
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween Sure! I've had a tricky time finding lessons for Never Found the Time by America or Fire and Rain (John Denver version)
Good tutorial thanks. You might want to consider changing the thumbnail as at first I didn't realise it was a tutorial. I though it was just a copy of the original song due to the shot of Nick Drake you have used.
Great video! I'm a beginner (but rather ambitious clearly!). Just wondering if you have any tips for the 6th & 9th fret part? I can't seem to keep the 3rd and 2nd strings free, which means I'm not getting that nice resonance. Thanks :))
Hi Sophie! That is likely something to do with your bar position, try placing the 3rd and 4th fingers first, then the bar, to relieve some of that tension.
Well done! We need to really appreciate the LED lights in the back though. Let's not overlook the importance of how cool those look and how they make the video better.
And the symmetry of the hanging guitars
thank you! i'd beenlooking for this everywhere.
P.S: you look like obi-wan lol!
Haha thanks! “Skill is the child of patience” - Obi Wan
Hahaha the clapping made it all click. Thank you!
Anticipating the 50th anniversary of Pink Moon coming up this Friday, I've been working on an arrangement for this one. I'm curious as to why most people tune down so low and then capo vs. tuning DADGDF#? Is it bc tuning up the high E is a little tight? It does seem easier on the hands to use the capo, but I wonder how Nick did it.
nick was known for using a capo so it doesnt seem too out of the ordinary
This seemed like such a good tutorial and I was excited. However, I got stuck, and frustrated at the first part about how the guitar needs to be tuned. Is it what you say, without the capo or with. Even so the strings get to loose and rattle? What am I doing wrong sigh
The strings need to be tuned to the pitches I listed in the video without the capo, but if you try to play along with Nick's recording, you'll find you are slightly off. He probably was not using a tuner and just tuned the guitar by ear. If you want to play along with the recording, tune your guitar first, put on the capo, start the recording, and try to match your 6th string to his 6th string.
my neighbors say thank you
Tell them its my pleasure!
do we adjust the tuning to CGCFCE after adding the capo to the second fret?
Hello! You will want to tune first, then apply the capo.
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween thank you!
Hey Jon! Why not simply leave away the kapo and tune to DADGDF#?
I do not think this is the way Nick played it, just trying to stay true to his methods!

Great job...How the hell do you only have 95 subs.. If you put Martin Retro Strings on that guitar it would even sound closer. I think Nick killed himself because Snark Tuners were not invented yet!
Hey thanks! Ill have to try those strings out, probably easier than waiting for strings to "age" a few months for that Nick Drake sound. 95 and counting, thanks for the sub!
u look like ted kaczynski
To hear nick drake played with a pick not only hurts my ears, but annihilates my soul
So don’t use a pick.
why didn't u explain what u were doing at the last bit the. most confusing. part has no explanation ;(
Can you be more specific? Happy to explain something more if needed.
@@jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween I’m here because of Derrick. Can’t wait to dig through more of your vids.
I think she’s looking for a more “spelled-out” version of the descending piano fill.
@@rickyk8177 Hi Ricky! Thanks for your comment! Maybe I could make a supplemental video for that section in particular.
it isnt tone
Great lesson
