3 Most Common Fingerstyle Mistakes - Get Ahead of them NOW!
After 20 + years of teaching and 30 + years of playing I have noticed some common tendencies when guitarists start learning to play fingerstyle or classical. I am not seeing these things being discussed or remedied in an effective way on UA-cam, so hopefully this will help you get your plucking hand on the right track!

    I play the lead part an octave higher to give the guitar the illusion of the piano. It also sounds more "like the record". Also, I play it dynamically by digging into the verse chords and smoothly playing the chords on the second fret with feeling. Getting the strum correct on the chorus is near impossible since it is in like 5/4 to 7/4. Its all ear training at that point.

    I like how you slowed it down for the intro picking pattern and fingering. It's a few months now that I've been learning Travis picking and using the thumb and fingers. I was only using my index for finger-picking easy songs like HEY THERE DELILAH but I was kicking myself for not practicing to learn to use my middle finger and ring finger for more fun songs like Train's MARRY ME and Kansas DUST IN THE WIND. So far after 2 months of practice using my index and middle finger, I am becoming very comfortable playing the songs. After searching to play SOLSBURY HILL on YT, I came upon your video and am ready to incorporate the ring finger. It's only a few days now and find it more of a struggle with the ring finger. But I find using the ring finger so necessary and gives the song such a sweet and melodic technique to the pattern and song. I've been playing for 25+ years but never took guitar-playing seriously until 2 years ago. I love your technique and how effortless you make the guitar sound. I practice every day for 1 - 2 hours just finger-picking for muscle memory and hopefully figure it all out. Any advice on how to get the ring finger to feel more comfortable like the other fingers or is it just a matter of practice slowly and accurately and then build up the speed till your comfortable.

    Thanks for sharing this tutorial for a Nick Drake classic. One smaller point: tone. As Josh Turner showed in a lengthy analysis of the Nick Drake sound, Nick was probably using very dead nickel strings that contribute a lot to the unique quality of his sound.

    Hi, I saw some players tilting right hand down to be perpendicularly to the strings just like in 5:00. I saw comments that were praising these players for playing in such a way, calling it "the old school tilted right hand technique". Could you elaborate on that? I don't know anymore what's right and what's wrong. Dropping down feel terrible to the wrist, at least now since I naturaly played with straight angle.

    • @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween
      @jonpaulyerby-thespacebetween 2 роки тому

      Hi Eryk! The right hand down and perpendicular to the strings is definitely considered "old school", you can see plenty of players like Segovia and his students using this perpendicular position. In one sense, "to each their own", we all have different shaped hands and arms, so it is expected to see a variety of right hand positions. That being said, one could also argue that turning the wrist down and to the right in this manner is obstructing the tendons from moving freely through the carpel tunnel. While this may never lead to injury, it has more potential for injury than a wrist that is kept more in line with the forearm. Second, the diagonal approach to the strings can produce a full and rich tone, and is much more common with today's players.
