- (Time Stamps Below) Here is a guitar tutorial for Hazey Jane 1 by Nick Drake. I couldnt find a lesson on youtube already so thought I would try one. I mostly follow this tab:nickhealey.com/... but change a few bits to make it easier for me to play. Its a fairly complex song so please enjoy my brain trying to calculate what is going on with various strings frets and fingers in all its glory throughout! Here are some time stamps to help you along:

Idk you smiling the whole way through the tutorial made it that much more pleasant to learn from you haha. Thanks for the info man. Blessings
I love how your like almost smiling the entire time like there's a joke your kind of thinking about the whole time but aren't going to tell us
Perhaps I was still subconsciously thinking about the accidental guitar pun at 1:27!
@@EHJ1988 🤣 Horrible
My only regret is that i didnt say it on purpose!
This is great, my man!
I learned to play Three Hours a while back, and wanted to try this but could never get off on the right foot with the tuning.
The rhythm is something I'm more confident with, I use it a lot, but the pure fluidity of the segments in this song are a thing of beauty.
Awesome! This is a noble pursuit because there aren't a whole lot of Nick Drake tutorials out there. I wanted something like this when I was learning this song. I'd love to see more!
Thanks for the kind words. I think this and the Intro from Bryter Layter are the only 2 i can play that dont already have a tutorial on here unfortunately!
@@EHJ1988 Well thank you for them. I'd love to hear even your covers of other songs of his. What guitar do you play?
Its an alvarez rd20s, i actually have another channel where ive posted a few fingerstyle covers of other artists and I think the plan is to eventually move them over to this channel instead so everything is in one place. Might potentially do a tutorial for Parasite at some point, as the other tutorial on youtube might be less accessible to novice players.
@@EHJ1988 Very cool! Parasite has a weird picking pattern so that's a good idea. Your Alvarez has really nice authentic sound, by the way!
Hear hear! Thanks for doing this in such detail, Eliot. Would love to see you break down more of Nick's songs as well.
Beautiful... well done.👍 Nick was an incredible player, and so are you.
Beautiful! 🎸🎶🌌
I wish you could teach me how to play guitar
First heard it in 2014. Still learning how to play it ! Really tough ! Finally a lesson on this song !
keep going, it takes a while to learn but well worth it! Hopefully this video helps
Thank you very much for this. A great help and a sensitive and carefully constructed tutorial. As ever it’s a real fingerstyle challenge let alone trying to add vocals.! Maybe by 2022.
It took quite a while for me to learn, its weird thinking back now to when i was struggling with it as now i can play it all so fluidly. Really is just a case of repeating the sections over and over until they flow!
Thanks so much! This is my favourite song and this tutorial helped me learn it :)
Glad to hear it helped!
i love your energy so much, you seem like such a nice person :) ❤️
yepp !
Great tutorial. Would also love to see you break down more Nick Drake songs.
I've been planning on doing 'Hanging on a Star' next, cant ever seem to find the time to get it recorded!
Beautiful! Thanks a bunch!!!!
60 seconds in and I'm fucking hell - Nick really was a genius.... Thanks for doing this.
His style is so unique, so many of the picking patterns ive never encountered anywhere else!
Fookin ellllll! I had some of this song down a number of years ago, but never mastered it. I studied Nick's stuff for years, I learned some of those songs, but not many. I did
figure out Tow The Line, Parasite, and Voice From The Mountain fairly well. It's only in recent years that you had people putting up covers on UA-cam and really figuring out some of Nick's songs properly. I'm going to sit down and finally learn this now. On the 12-string, too, cause I'm a masochist. (2 hours later) I had a bash, it's kind of coming along! God bless ye for posting this.
I still have trouble with the opening/closing walk up walk down bit, if you do it too fast it sounds awful.
only a mad man would learn this on a 12 string! I would be very interested in hearing the final product though!
@@EHJ1988 A madcap. Now that I have a D'ddario trusty chromatic clip-on tuner, wrestling with the 12-string beast is no longer daunting, thank goodness. I can tune it fast, although I tend to tune up very slowly. It worked out fine. I'm going to practice Place To Be again tonight, found someone's tutorial on that as well.
Funny, I was looking at my 12 string & wonder what it might sound like - has a built-in tuner, & I'm getting ready to change the strings anyway... 🤔😏
Wow your way ahead man amazing fretwork
0:30 How do you get C on the 6th string (darkest string)? With Capo on the 2nd fret, you get F#. Tune it down 2 half steps, and you're back to E. Do you use different strings? Like an A string on the E place, ore a bass guitar A string on the E place or something like that?
Hi there! without the capo on tune the 6th string down to C, then add the capo. So the open note is actually a D. Hopefully this makes sense.
@@EHJ1988 can you tune a normal low E string down 4 half steps?
yes! quite a lot of nick drake songs use this tuning, for 'from the morning' he even tuned the 6th string down to a B!
@@EHJ1988 nice. thx for info
Thanks So Much!
Cello song doesn't have any good tutorials on UA-cam, only some bad covers. I would love to see your version of it :)
If you want a good cello song cover i would suggest Tobias Wilden's version! I'll add a tutorial for it to my 'hit list' however 'hanging on a star' and 'far leys/ sketch 1' are ones i'm hoping to record first, I just need to learn how to play them first!
Cello Song is actually harder by far than this song, which is scary enough.
Great tutorial :) Might need to update that link! Looks broken.
thanks and good spot! Ive updated the link now
Perfect tutorial!
Thanks!

thought n ick used his right hand pinky? 🤔
Hey, great tutorial just one question about the tuning. I’ve played other nick songs that sound very similar to the recording by tuning the guitar a tiny bit sharp too, what have you done because to my ear I feel I’m slightly off on this one.
not 100% sure to be honest! sometimes when I tune my guitar then add the capo the notes become slightly off. I also think I read read somewhere Nick Drake would deliberately have his strings tuned slightly too high/low
Eliot Hudson-Jones alright, thanks again for this!
@@nonaaame550 Could be a semitone up or down or quarter step on some version, god only knows. I think Eliot's sounds spot-on to the album version, however.
Legend bro thanks !!
Thanks mate, glad people are finding this useful!
Could you try a tutorial for Nick drake three hours can’t seem to find one on UA-cam and it’s a fantastic song ?
ive started learning how to play it now, its going to take a while though as its quite complicated! ill do a tutorial once i got it learnt
Wonderful thank you !
Class tutorial mate love your taste in music , do you reckon you could do a tutorial for “tree green” or “new day” from road to ruin (John Martyn and Beverly Martyn).
Never heard of those songs before, will check them out!
@@EHJ1988 let me know what you think👍
I’m not saying your tutorial is bad, it’s impossible to play it because of how scary good Nick was at guitar
Thank you man! What is the tuning?
CGCFCE I think with a capo on 2nd fret
