Erythema Multiforme (EM) is an immune-mediated condition primarily impacting the skin and mucous membranes, including those in the oral cavity.
In the mouth, it manifests as red spots, fluid-filled blisters, and large sores.
Erythema Multiforme in the oral cavity comes in two main forms: Minor and Major. The Minor form is more common, less severe, and often resolves by itself, while the Major form is severe, affects multiple mucous membranes, and may require hospitalization.
Common triggers are infections, particularly herpes simplex virus (HSV), medications, vaccinations, malignancies, and autoimmune disorders.
Diagnosing EM involves a clinical examination for characteristic lesions, patch tests, cultures, or specialized studies like Immunofluorescence.
There is no cure, but treatments focus on symptom relief and often involve antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, and oral antivirals. Supportive therapies like mouthwashes and rehydration may be used for symptom management.
