Great video but have 2 points to make
1. You need 3 or more symptoms of DIGFAST to make a diagnosis of mania or hypomania. You need 4 only if the mood is irritable (From DSM 5)
2. To make a diagnosis of bipolar 2, criteria for past or current MDD must be meet( hypomania plus MDD)
DIGFAST

Impulsivity
Grandiosity

(lack of) Sleep
Talkativeness
After all these years thinking I had ADHD I finally understand I was masking my bipolar disorder. This makes so much sense now, I want to go to Psychology and Neuroscience college to understand better all those different ways to see the world based on each disorder, thank you so much for this
Self diagnosing yourself based on a video is stupid.
Go see a doctor, seriously!
Sorry to tell you... But you can have BOTH at the same time you know. Its just more likely they'll put it all under the most prevailing condition, which will always be ADHD because that is life-long and starts in childhood. Kids don't get bipolar a diagnosis, but they will get an ADHD diagnosis.
Ultimately it matters not, look into both and treat yourself as if you have both. Because like I say you can have bipolar and also have the signs of ADHD, it's not a one thing or the other diagnosis, you don't get a single label in medicine.
I hope you don’t diagnose yourself. Even if you think you have a mental illness you have to go to a psychiatrist and ask their opinion. A doctor is the only person who can give you a diagnosis. Please don’t just diagnose yourself because you saw a video on it.
don't self diagnose yourself if you aren't a professional based on one video. you'll self identify with something you might not have and then let it dictate your life/identity.
I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar 2, plus OCD and PTSD. You can have more than one mental illness haha..ha 🥲
Please make more psychology and psychiatry related videos..you're precision is really amazing...❤️
how to keep the schizo- spectrum straight
Very true 🙌💯🙏
Your
This is helpful
Yes pls do
I have abnormal psychology exam tomorrow and binging on your videos you're a real gem and angel. I feel like I'm smart, and it's a novel feeling!
I'm recommending it to friends.
Just a clarifying point for anyone watching, bipolar 2 is not hypomania +/- a depressive episode, it is at least one hypomanic episode AND at least one major depressive episode.
I finished my psychiatry course yesterday and i was waiting alot for your videos 😭😭😭😭 please make some videos for Internal medicine ☹️☹️☹️
These videos you do are great for me to better understand my condition as a patient. Thanks for making them.
can i ask how long it took you to get diagnosed?
MSW student. I am just going to start every section of assessment with your videos. So helpful.
I have really loved the explanation especially when a graph is used.
Well done!!
Excellent presentation. Very detailed, clear, useful. Thank you.
These are so helpful studying for PMHNP boards. Thank you so much for supplying free & high quality content!
Thank you! just wanted to note that my first aid 2020 states mania consists of 3 or more of DIGFAST
Be more mindful of how many days. If it's for 4 days or less than more likely to be hypomanic, which points toward type II bipolar.
My text book too. in South Africa.
3 or more symptoms + elevated mood = 4 symptoms or more
This is wonderful! I was diagnosed type 2 after a depressive episode requiring outpatient therapy (due to a major life event). Viewing this, I feel I may be dysthymia. I am well controlled with my current mood stabilizer + SSRI combo. This saved my life and my career.
I have a friend who is bipolar type 2 this helps me more understand
I admit I suffer from Depression,Bipolar,Anxiety,Ptsd plus some physical issues. I’ve endured so I much trauma through my life. Fact Is I no longer have that. I do find most basic things incredibly exhausting and stressful. Its like I can longer handle stress such as bills. I am currently in my bed unable to get out, meaning 4 days now not showering randomly eating napping here and there. Sleep pattern is off. This is a day in the life of a mental disorder. One would ever know if you seen me. I am a model, non union actresses a grandmother and parent. I love my family and have a handful of true friends. Its not ever enough. Its all in my mind. I fight the horrid thoughts daily. It matters none how one looks. This is a definite blind disability. I am trying to be helpful by sharing but I reckon reaching out too. I don’t know you but if you are the one whom suffers such as I do perhaps you understand this is real and very draining. To those whom know anyone that has bipolar, let it not be a stigma. This is real. Unfortunately there is no cure.. yet
Please do more psychology videos. These are so helpful.
Dude thank you so much for your videos, they are lifesavers!

HAha very funny
not me at 1:23 AM having a teat tomorrow XD
Sleep problem symptoms overlap in a lot of disorders or insomnia so it doesnt automatically mean bipolar
Great video. I have never understood this content better than watching this video. 👍

YOU ARE A HERO
I wish you make a video for remembering the psych disorders timelines
I have found in my practice most of the patiences that have some mania have successful businesses.
Yep .... We're just a test to pass. Good job
Thank you for this! :)
Great repetition and easily understood by your explanation! One question, what is SIGECAPS??
Check out my video on depression for further explanation
@@DirtyMedicine It is M-SIG-E-CAPS
@@DirtyMedicine There is no difference in the number of symptoms between Bipolar I and II, the video is incorrect on this. See below:
"During the period of mood disturbance and increased energy and activity, at least 3 of the [DIGFAST] symptoms have persisted (4 symptoms if the mood is only irritable)."
Thanks a lot .any videos for borderline personality
l you your channel ,sooooo helpfull ,thank you this least thing to do to say than ,donot stop making this great vedio
this is so helpful to familiarise myself about this disorder, thank you for the video ❤
So how does one discern whether they are just in a good mood or hypomanic? The hardest thing for me is that I know I’m educated, I’m extremely outgoing, and I love talking to other people. That’s a part of who I am and have been since I was a child. I know I’m very gifted, but not a God or a savior of any kind. I’m grateful I have any intelligence or gifts. But the hardest thing is I can’t really tell when I am hypomanic or just in a good mood. Because my regular personality even since 2nd, 3rd, or even 7th grade is talking to others and thinking a lot. But I know there is something wrong now. Any tips on my situation??? Also I love writing, and I think when I’m manic or depressed for some reason I write these really profound poems or papers. And I don’t mean like writing nonsense, like it actually makes sense. So is that all going to go away when I get medicated ?
Hey I think you’re fine as long as you’re not hurting yourself or others. Looks like you’re just a hyperactive person with enthusiasm that’s all. You don’t have a mood disorder. We all feel depressed or hypomanic every now and then.
Thanks so much for this --- are you using the DSM 5? It says 3 symptoms, not 4 for the diagnosis....(?)
You are correct. DSM5 says 3 symptoms for euphoric mania. But you need 4 symptoms for "irritable" mania. And then there's mixed episodes which the clinician also must be able to spot.
Thank you so much for this video!! Just had a question, is Manic episode diagnosed if 4/7 DIGFAST symptoms are present or 3/7? FA 2019 says 3 at least.
funny thing about 20:30 I started taking just lexapro and it was all good until a week in I started getting manic. THEN I started abusing left over adderall I had and that made it even worse. after a month of being destructive my parents took me to see a new psychiatrist snd I got diagnosed so that was fun. oh and this was all during my 18th birthday
please make a video of personality disorders and how to differentiate them from disorders in the questions
from what I see watching the other videos, the biggest difference is that "normal" disorders are ego-dystonic. the sufferer is frequently aware of what is "wrong" with them (and by wrong I mean deviating from their norm), and dislikes and wants to change their situation just on their own. personality disorders on the other hand are ego-syntonic, meaning the patient will very frequently not know that there's something different with them at all, and might not dislike the disorder itself (since they don't even think they have any) but rather the side effects and distress this disorder causes in their personal life, like loss of friends and jobs.
Good
Dude I love you!
Doesn't Gabapentin help with mood stabilization? The reason I ask is because I remember someone being prescribed that as one and since I've been on it, my moods are much more stabile. I also have to have ssri's. I've been on Prozac for a long time. I don't do antipsychotics anymore. They caused me to gain massive amounts of weight. There are genetic tests available that can tell you who will or will not gain a lot of weight.
Gabapentin is known to cause weight gain as well. Gaba works with the pleasure centers in your brain probably why it makes you feel better or more stable
Amazing but DSM states 3 or more symptoms of DIG FAST is enough for mania diagnosis.
It’s DSM 5TR now
how do i find out what benefits i get from being a patreon member? i want to be a donor
Thanks for the great videos but I think there's a typo; bipolar II requires both a hypomanic episode AND a depressive episode, bipolar I does not require the depressive episode, just the manic episode.
yes per the DSM V, but on your exams it will be given to you as a hypomanic episode only and you'll infer that its bipolar 2 based on that alone if its not obviously a cyclothymia type presentation. keep it simple
Tnk u but i think bipolar 2 need to have both hypomania with major depressive disorder,it shouldnt be +/- cos major depressive disorder is mandatory to diagnose bipolar 2
Distractability
Impulsively
Grandiosity
Flight of ideas
Activity
Sleep
Talkativeness
eg, the late robin williams stand up routine or his Aladdin character, Genie
In other sources, it says bipolar is 3 out of 7 not 4; was this changed recently?
It's 3 or 4. It depends on the patient's mood.
Please make more psychiatry videos
You can’t use antidepressants for manic patients
Ye.
how to tell the difference btw Paranoid and Delusional? A couple qbanks keep asking this. always confused me. Also how to keep the schizo- spectrum straight??
Paranoid - feeling
Delusional - believing
