I love this style and almost ready to work on my dinning table and chairs. But a bit nervous on the chairs. Can you do the same technique on the chairs ??
Hi You just save me .I have same kind of tablel and going to do it by my self. What kind of primer and colours I need to choose...?? Furniture pain or wooden paint?? Thanks a lot
Hi Shannon. I’m so inspired by your videos. I always say I don’t have a creative bone in my body but I’m ready to tackle a project for the first time. Could you use a chalk paint instead of regular paint? Thanks so much for your videos!!!
Your work is superb 😍 I've never seen "the broom" technique. It's really unique and it actually works the best in comparison to others I've seen. You did awesome! Quick question... Does wipe on poly yellow overtime since it's an oil based top coat?
Thanks! It is oil based so it has the potential to yellow "amber" over time but I have not had anything with it on it yellow yet, that being said I have never used it on a pure white project for that reason.
WOW! Turned out to be such a beautiful, high end looking pair of night stands! I have a question for you unrelated to this (I just found you and subscribed but didn't go through all of your videos), have you ever painted, chalk painted, etc. dark wood laminate flooring? I'm not sure how to do it to get the look I want (I'm really liking the white, gray & black flooring but you can tell it isn't painted by hand). It doesn't HAVE to be those colors but I HATE this dark wood laminate (it shows every piece of dust, any tiny lump, scratch, etc). It would definitely be a big project!
This is awesome, I love all your tips and tricks. What would you recommend if I want to reverse this and have the grey underneath and the white/light color as the primary or "surface" color? What colors or products would you recommend I buy to switch it? Thank you!
Yes 🙌 I have done this technique sooo many ways and with a paint glaze I make too! It’s very fun to try dif looks, I like to make a sample board first of ideas I have on a scrap piece of wood ❤️
It's not exactly about painting but I have a dresser and I don't know how to add coasters to it so they can move around easily it's a French provincial and I want to do it up in a good way do you know any update about
Did you have any issues with the gel stain not drying in the time it was supposed to? Almost a full day later and mine is still tacky. Temp and humidity conditions are ideal as well.
You’re so welcome! Glad you’re here! You probably could, but I really prefer gel stains for furniture because they have better coverage (so you’ll need less to cover more which might even the price out ❤️) and they don’t drip so it’s great for working on things that are vertical. Cheers!
Open canyon leans yellow and rugged tan leans pink as far as “wood” color undertones so go with what you have going on in your home so it’ll coordinate 🖤
Hi Shannon, I noticed in a previous video you used tinted primer instead of paint: Can I still use this technique without the chalk paint, right over tinted primer ?
Regular oil stain will drip too much, you need a gel stain because it’s thicker or a paint will work also. I make a glaze a lot w/half clear coat and half paint but I don’t have a paint color match to Briarsmoke yet. Here is Briarsmoke gel stain quart for $20 is on Amazon amzn.to/3vkJqQ6
Finally getting around to doing this finish. It seems Briarsmoke sells out in most Home Depot stores. Hope it’s your growing channel creating the demand. 😁 Do you know of any alternative brand of gel stain close to briarsmoke to use?
Wow! Such a beautiful job! I already tried it using the glaze and I loved it. But now I see you are using gel stain, what an amazing technique, thanks for your videos 😘
These "wood finish" videos have done it for me. I'm hooked on this look now, going to try it and see how successful I can be at the technique! But first...I need a small broom!!!!
Hi Shannon! I am in a pickle I live all the way in Alaska and they do not and cannot ship the briar smoke gel stain 😭 is there a gel stain like the minwax gel stain in Slate at lowes would that be an equal comparison? I also have on hand the Rustoleum smoked glaze would that work too? I literally want this look for on top of a coffee table
Hey! Good news is you can use half paint and half clear coat and make your own glaze, I do it all the time! I have used the rustoleum glaze too, I have videos of me using these things too if you want to see it in action. But yeah, lots of freedom with this technique
I TOTES had this dresser and entire bedroom suite growing up (in the 1900's). They are Sears/JcPenney circa 1968. What a beautiful transformation breathing new life into this true 60's classic.
Thank you for sharing your ideas, I love the detail you share even the top coat poly wipe-on and then paint the rest from the can...but you can also add a little from the can over the wipe on to keep the matt look uniform. Those are the little tips that some sites by-pass and make or break the look f a piece of furniture. I love the handle tips too... . I have both types polyurethane and just picked up a piece of furniture for $25 this week.... cant wait to get started!!!! I'm inspired!
Super badass! Love this technique! Also love What you did with the handles. Super clever. And I love the fact that you just use normal products like me. You don't have to spend a fortune on high end paint to create beautiful furniture. Thanks for the video and all the tips. Keep up the great work!
Hiii! I’m looking to finish my dining room table and have followed a bunch of your techniques thus far! For top coat, do you advise using the varathane in 3-4 coats? Or should I apply one wipe on poly then continue with the varathane? Thanks!!!
The Varathane is really great, I would do 3 coats for a table top. Wipe on poly is great too usually do about 3 coats or more of that. it’s a personal choice and either will be great. The wipe on poly does slightly yellow over time which doesn’t matter much on wood looks but something to consider in your choice. They are both great 👍 and extremely durable
You are SO kind to create these videos! I always feel so much more confident and inspired to try these techniques! Your creativity and calm voice makes me want to binge all the videos! And i WILL!!😃 Thanks so much!!
Absolutely great video!!! Great information on technique and I love how it’s to the point and no crazy music. Also love your responses to the comments. I’ve learned so much. Now, which piece to try this on?? Maybe all of them!!!!
Great videos. I do have a question for you so I hope you see this. I bought a huge Toscana dining table from Pottery Barn because I needed a super big table - seats 12 with leaves. It looks like this is not real wood and I am afraid to paint it. The color is light tan and doesn't work with my room. I have 10 textured reproduction Windsors from David Smith Workshops that are very authentic and have a unique old world crackle finish so I really don't want to mess up the table. Chairs are maple backed and some all black. I'm going for a dark brownish black with maybe some reddish undertones for the table. It has a ton of graining but it isn't real wood. Any suggestions on what kind of finish to use and do you see any problem with painting over this "fake wood". Thanks so much.
Is there reason why you use Semi-Gloss vs Satin Primer (Zinsser-tintable), which one specifically do you use in the "Zinsser brand" in Open Canyon Behr Color?
Hi, Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 😊 I have wooden Billy bookcase and I will be painting it a dark colour on the outside but I would like to keep it inside a light colour, it is a bit yellow at the moment. Can veneer be whitewashed just wondering if it is worth a try ?
Ok I have a question though- gel stain is oil based. I didn’t know you could use a water based polyurethane over that and have it work? I’m confused. I’m trying to refinish a laminate table
I am confused, you said you used polycrylic for body but Varathane can you show at 8:48 says "polyurethane", which one should be used to get matte look. We used polyurethane and it has semi gloss look. Can you help.
Amazing video, thanks. I am doing a laminate table this way, I did very strong coat of primer to start with, was it a mistake ? I still have not finished priming. also wondering what coat would work for me if I am going to use Mahogany or walnut gel stain? I already have some sort of light bronze color, is it going to work or I need some light brown for underneath of gel stain? thanks
I am painting two cupboards in a trailer that has veneer on it and I would like to do it like a brown grayish Driftwood luck Mobo I need to go and I’m wondering what color I should use and if you could give me any information I would really appreciate it thank you
I love love love your work! I did your driftwood finish on a dresser but want the drawers to stand out. Before I realized this is want I wanted to do, I applied the pewter stain. Can I go over it with a gel stain? I have a dark grey sample
Love this gel stain. Can I go over oak cabinets? Clean then stain and seal? I feel like the poly top coat is going to yellow. Love the wipe on. Can I use a clear satin lacquer finish over an oil based gel stain?
Love the finish on the 2 night stands, can you please list the items and color for me. I'm having problems with my dining room table and this finish will look perfect. Thank you!
You make this look way too easy! I think this would be a great technique to update some old picture frames I've been wanting to lighten up. Thanks for showing me how!
What would I use if I wanted it to look like it was a white wash - not gray but a beach light color - it would be on a coffee table so wax would not be good. Thank you advance.
Just a question bc you do this professionally... Does the Behr paint hold up as well as chalk paint? I am just starting out and I keep getting mixed reviews about not using house paint.
If you want hands down the most durable paint, then go with oil enriched enamel, I like valspar furniture and cabinet enamel but many swear by Benjamin Moore advance. They are water clean up even though they are oil based. They are strong enough for cabinets, table tops etc and will be the most durable for furniture *but* they take a while to cure fully (20-30 days) and they dry slower. As long as you clean, prime, and topcoat you can use ANY paint and it’ll do just fine for most projects. In general, the higher the sheen the more durable the paint will be so many furniture refinishers go with “enamel” semi gloss and then you can dull the sheen with a matte topcoat. When buying Behr just pick the sheen that is strong enough for trim/doors and if you prep/prime first you’ll be in good shape. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques with us all! You truly are amazing at this! I was given a couple of older style dressers and really want to try this or maybe one of your other techniques on them! I am new so these poor dressers don't know what they are in for with me and a paint brush! But hopefully by following along with you they will have some hope of turning out decent! lol What kind of sandpaper should I buy and or sander that isn't super expensive yet works alright??? Thank you!!!!!!!
I love a raw bleached wood look on frech provincial but black is my second choice and 3rd would be a faux wood look like this or the others on this channel
These look gorgeous! What a beautiful finish! 😍 Thanks so much for the wealth of knowledge you are providing me! I am so glad I found your channel 👍👍
I just found you and your work is absolutely beautiful! Can’t wait for your Sea Drift technique video!
I love this style and almost ready to work on my dinning table and chairs. But a bit nervous on the chairs. Can you do the same technique on the chairs ??
This is awsome!!! and yes I stuck around to the end of the video I'm a hotel painter
Thank you!
Thanks - great look and really informative video. I’ll definitely be trying this!
Thank you. I have learned a lot from watching you.
Just found you channel. Absolutely love you get right to it! No promos or blah blah blah lol.
❤️ ❤️ 💕 that’s just stunning 🤩 inspired
Hi
You just save me .I have same kind of tablel and going to do it by my self.
What kind of primer and colours I need to choose...?? Furniture pain or wooden paint??
Thanks a lot
Besides how nice this work is, i love how you just get to the point and show us your technique. Good work, keep it up! Thanks!
Right? Perfect for my attention span 😆
Hi Shannon. I’m so inspired by your videos. I always say I don’t have a creative bone in my body but I’m ready to tackle a project for the first time. Could you use a chalk paint instead of regular paint?

So the Behr paint is not specifically for furniture right?
Is the stained you used white or gray?
Did you use regular interior paint? It doesn’t have to be chalk paint?
Did you have any issues with the gel stain not drying in the time it was supposed to? Almost a full day later and mine is still tacky. Temp and humidity conditions are ideal as well.
Hey 👋 I have had it take a few days at times, I’m not positive why but probably something to do with the thickness of application
Love it
How do you clean your brushes
How many buckets I ll be needing for doing my dressing, side tables bed and 4 doors cuboard
Thank you for your videos my darling can I use the Varathane Briarsmoke in the regular oil since it’s cheaper than the gel thank you
You’re so welcome! Glad you’re here! You probably could, but I really prefer gel stains for furniture because they have better coverage (so you’ll need less to cover more which might even the price out ❤️) and they don’t drip so it’s great for working on things that are vertical. Cheers!

Gel stain takes a a few days to dry, but once it does it is durable enough for floors
Is the entire piece laminate?
Yes, this was ikea laminate
Please painu in wood finish in wood colors.
Your channel is under-subscribed. You don’t just paint furniture, you reinvent the finish.
Yes! Exactly!!!
Wow this has opened up such a different world of finishes for me! I love this look. It's so high end! Can't wait for the companion video.
I thought you can’t use water-based poly on oil gel finish

These "wood finish" videos have done it for me. I'm hooked on this look now, going to try it and see how successful I can be at the technique! But first...I need a small broom!!!!
Whisk broom
Try an auto parts store for the whisk broom. They sell them with their car detailing supplies.
How do I stain a textured wood? My kitchen cabinetry is textured .... I hate the color so I want to stain it
Wow!!! Big fan of your work. I love the fact that you take older looking furniture and make it upscale. Love it all 💕
I’m learning a lot. Thanks for sharing Tami!! It’s beautiful. Have a blessed week ahead darling 🙏🏽👌🏾♥️

I just brush sideways and it looks great

I love it! 2 question what if there is some bubbling here and there about the size of a dime? Also can I use my vacuum to clean it after sanding?😅
Love this gel stain. Can I go over oak cabinets? Clean then stain and seal? I feel like the poly top coat is going to yellow. Love the wipe on. Can I use a clear satin lacquer finish over an oil based gel stain?
I cannot find the Varathsne gel stain in briarsmoke anywhere in my area. Do you have a substitute that would work?? Thank you
Hi I'd like to say Im a huge fan and you are an artist. Question though, can I use gel stain over chalk painted nightstand? Many thanks!
Hi I Was Just Wondering If This Will Be Ok To Use This On A Electric Fireplace
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I’m inspired and I really want to start flipping some furniture and give it a nice colors.
I do a lot of refinishing work ,but really like this grey look. And Have never used liquid varnish top coat.
What about the fact that there is no actual wood grain design? Does that make it look less like a solid wood piece?
Love the finish on the 2 night stands, can you please list the items and color for me. I'm having problems with my dining room table and this finish will look perfect. Thank you!

I'm so happy I found your tutorial video. Love the way you explain the techniques. 😃
I saw this on your Channel at just the right moment. I'm getting ready to use gel stain the top of a desk and I'm going to use your Technique.
I saw your other video on this technique and used it !! My piece looks amazing!!! Thank you!!
Was searching for this video cuz I’m finally ready to do it and your finished product looked better than any others!
Wow... looks so amazing before and after I really love it.
Does the brooms get really hard as you do a piece? If so do you get it wet and wipe it off between sections?
Are you putting poly acrylic on top of oil? Is that ok ? I am confused.
Where can I purchase the gel stain and do you have to send first if it’s on wood?
nice job!!! making cheap furniture into a sleek finish is an art.
I can’t find the rostoleeum decorative what else can I used?
Will this technique work with chalky paint as the base?
Just a question bc you do this professionally... Does the Behr paint hold up as well as chalk paint? I am just starting out and I keep getting mixed reviews about not using house paint.
If you want hands down the most durable paint, then go with oil enriched enamel, I like valspar furniture and cabinet enamel but many swear by Benjamin Moore advance. They are water clean up even though they are oil based. They are strong enough for cabinets, table tops etc and will be the most durable for furniture *but* they take a while to cure fully (20-30 days) and they dry slower. Hi! Do you prefer to use the gel stain or the glaze? Thx
Working on my third piece using your technique. Thank you for sharing. I’m loving it.
will this work if your base paint color is a latex paint?
I refinished a piece using briar smoke. It turned out a darker grey. How can I lighten it without starting over completely?
I would dry brush using the base color to lighten it up and if that doesn’t do it you could paint the color on full strength and then use a paper towel to wipe it, test out on a not so visible area first.
Love this! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely love it!!,im impressed 🤗,I was looking for something different(idea wise) and stumbled upon your video, cant wait to try out,THX!!!🤗

Can I use this same color of Behr paint as a base for a different stain color, a warmer tone (like a chestnut for ex)?
Yes totally, and I have a few finishes on the channel if you haven’t seen them all, lots of water based options too!
Can you put acryclic polyurethane over oil?
Love the way these turned out!! I might have to give this a try!!
Love this! Gorgeous! I wonder if this would work on some foul colored laminate FLOORING? With Oil based primer ?
I’m sure if you used a primer for floors it would!
@@blacksheephouse thanks! Did you use flat/matte paint or eggshell or satin or?

I love a raw bleached wood look on frech provincial but black is my second choice and 3rd would be a faux wood look like this or the others on this channel
Would this work on an office desk? The typical brown laminate type
Yes it would work on that just use a good primer and lightly sand the surface prior to help lithe primer adhesion
