Over the next week I am going to have a LOAD of content about portfolios and marketing going up. So hit subscribe and follow me on instagram to make sure you get all of the information instagram.com/scottchoucino/
With a 35 yr commercial career behind me, I see this: Commercial photographers work for businesses. Wedding and portrait work for consumers. Instagram/internet photographers work for dreams and peanuts (barring a select few).
Just found your channel a couple of days ago and have been steadily consuming your content: love your brutal honesty and valuable advice. Been seriously thinking about making photography a career and find your style of guidance a breath of fresh air 👍
Excellent as always. I remember in the distant past shooting personal work. These days I don't even think I have a 'personal' style, just what my clients like. I think my style has evolved to move with what people are paying me to make.
You mentioned PM. A certain photographer. I personally like your style of videos. Its straight to the point, and you don't beat around the bush. Your videos from start to end are full of wisdom.. (what to do, and what not to do). I like that. I also like your personality. Its not overblown, over the top... and theatrical. I really like your presentation and your personality. I just discovered your channel.
I appreciate your videos greatly. I would like to get into product photography & maybe videography. You are an inspiration of honesty and humility and also a straight forward candid, I am who I am attitude.
You are such a down to earth pro with unique insights, I don t kniw why your channel isnt exploding. A bit mor images might be nice to see when you re talking about certain styles you talk about.
love your channel, binge watchint it at the moment, not a pro by any means. Hobbiest, but I love it! Not for sharing, for the love of it, the process, and the result, your videos add on to this. Not for the confirmation, for the style and creativity
Thank you for this video. I can’t thank you enough for the knowledge you are sharing. I was very worried about venturing into the professional world, but you have really helped me realize that I can do this.
I couldn’t agree more. One of the main reasons why I’ve got clients its because they have seen my portfolio. After hiring me they message me and tell me that they found my social media. Kind of weird. Regardless, another awesome video. Thanks for sharing!
The one thing I learned long ago. Dont look for a fellow photographer to give you credit. Most are vegy critical of others work, if its better than they can produce. Your earni g a good living from what you create, so, as long as your customers like it. God bless.
Thanks for the video Scott. Another guy worth looking at is Sean Tucker. A good photographer but his videos are excellent - very philosophical, deep and thoughtful. Different from Mckinnon or Jarred Pollin who're high energy :)
Yeah I watch a few of his videos. My fave youtuber is Casey Neistat by a country mile though. His mentality is perfect. Although a videographer and director. rather than a commercial photographer. Very interesting nonetheless.
In your photography business series, can you please add a video on the future of commercial photography? I know in my line of work (interiors, home goods and such) big companies (IKEA, Waifer) have gone 90% 3D modeling from all photography just few years ago. Should I be learning CGI software in your opinion?
The more time on UA-cam, the less time in the field. They are "Youtugraphers" You are one of the few UA-camrs who really talks about photos, the philosophy of work and techniques. Unfortunately UA-cam audience and most "photographers" like the BS talk on gear.
Have you read "The Road To Seeing" by Dan Winters? You should really give it a read if you haven't already. Dan, who is really well known as a celebrity portrait photographer, does all kinds of photography, illustration and sculpture. but it is all very much his sensibility. There is an important distinction he makes between style and sensibility. Style can be easily replicated. But sensibility is in your DNA. Its you're voice as an artist that you can't change.
Ryan _km might depend upon your niche. But for food we are considered to be the best so we get flown all over. Other genres obviously will differ as all countries have what they are known for. Brazil is really big for ad agencies and South Africa and New Zealand for shooting car tv adverts.
I understand the concept of "Take photos that you like, and don't care about what other people think", but when it comes to commercial work, isn't the goal to try and take photos that please as many people as possible? Or is it more that, the company that hires you is hiring you because of your style and taste, and that they have an expectation of what kind of photos you will take before you take them? I don't think you're wrong, you clearly know what you're talking about, I just find it a bit hard to follow.
I don’t think many photographers watching UA-camrs either know or understand just how rarefied the high end commercial scene really is. At any one time in London there is never more than 100 photographers really coining it. Your face has to fit, and with high fees, the clients want their pound of flesh. If you don’t do personal work and really mean it, you’re just another wannabe. I know, I was in and out of that scene for 25 years before I got out. Good luck, you’ve got the right attitude.

Commercial photographer vs internet photographer. Yes! finally, someone puts into words what I haven't been able to express
Thanks. I will try and put some more concise videos together on this topic in the future.
The familiar and authentic reaction to forgetting a word made me lol, thanks for keeping that bit in the video.

What's wrong with peanuts? Haha

This has given me a direction for building my portfolio that I had never thought of. This was just what I needed to hear. Thank you so much.

Pete Dillon yeah I tho o what we are around and do most days certainly impacts what we end up shooting

Brilliant, Scott. In your case, as you said, the numbers don't represent the relevance of the content. Thank you.

Could you make more videos about this topic. Thanks again for sharing such amazing content.
Had to create an account to personally say thank you for making this video. Hit the nail on the head on so many points.
Thank you for this video. I can’t thank you enough for the knowledge you are sharing. I was very worried about venturing into the professional world, but you have really helped me realize that I can do this.

Agnieszka Jakubowicz I’m working on one atm, trying to make it shorter haha
One question Scott.
Did you or the fly win?
The fly won haha.

Kwa Nguyen thanks for watching
Appreciate your wisdom
I am about to branch out, take photos that will more than likely earn me money and this means learning a different set of skills.
Could agree more with everything you've said here. 👍
Do you think you get less opportunity to work with bigger brands cause you live in the uk cause thats what my friend thinks
Ryan _km might depend upon your niche. But for food we are considered to be the best so we get flown all over. Other genres obviously will differ as all countries have what they are known for. Brazil is really big for ad agencies and South Africa and New Zealand for shooting car tv adverts.
Your tune has C H A N G E D man

You're supposed to do the claps BEFORE the scene starts! :-D
Childhood of gummy bears and gold bars??? You look in great shape for a person of who spent early years munching on sweets and junk food lol!
Agnieszka Jakubowicz haha thanks. I also did about 20 hours swimming and cycling each week. I was a hyper child
