Sorry, but I'm confused .... 147 other photographers told me I need to buy an Insta360 this week, strangely all at the same time 🤔 Love your work Scott

I bought one and after a week was carrying it in my front shirt pocket pulled it out to use it slipped and fell on the same floor I dropped my iPhone on countless times, but the insta360 was totalled. $400 down the drain.

What gear do you need as a pro photographer? ...And the answer is... Knowledge! So, start learning from books...The history of art, optics, anthropology, psychology, history of photography...Continue reading for at least five years, and then, go for Alpa, Sinar, Linhof, or a similar camera. Good luck!

I used to hang out in scale modelling groups on fb, and of course photography is an element of that. Ambysmal quality of lots of photos aside there is a lot of gear snobbery and self proclamimed 'pro' photographers. The amount of fallacies that phones cannot do the job, and you need 3 lights, 10k in lenses and 5k body to shoot plastic planes or tanks is rife. Your video is such a refreshing down to earth approach.

Totally Agree. So many people I see purchasing f/1.4 or 1.2 when the 1.8 does the job just as well. Purely just a status symbol for some that the majority of people don't need.

    You've earned a new sub.
This is exactly what people need to hear if they actually want to get serious with their photography. It's not even about the exact equipment, but the concepts and mindset.
My most productive and lucrative years as a photographer did not start until I took a step back from a modern (at the time) APS-C camera to an original Canon 5D + 85mm f1.8 and 17-40mm f4 in 2014. Oh, and a pair of cheap manual speedlights I couldn't live without! I developed so much as a photographer and produced work I'm still proud of to this day on minimal equipment. It was then that I became confident I could shoot photos for a living.

All great advice! How about a video about all the little things for grip? Things like super clamps, magic arms, and poles don't get the love they deserve. Black and white foamcore is a big one too, before I could afford a soft box foamcore V flats and white rip stop nylon could give me up to a 3'X8' softbox. It can be modified much more than a softbox as well.

Thanks for this particular video! The content and channel has been EXACTLY what I've been searching for, for many years. Would love advice on finding props with right vibe (glasses, icecubes, flatware) and basic grip stuff - especially flags and when to use diffusion types (opal, 216, etc). For my tiny budget, I've found cinefoil, barn doors, black foamcore for negative fill, and DIY white foamcore softboxes with gel/modifiers have been major tools on the cheap. Last comment - would love to support channel thru affordable digital products ($20-60) like your workshop, or anything else easy for you to put together (desktop backgrounds, artist hardcover book) until I can build a better portfolio for review. Thank you for all the awesome work, knowledge, and content!!!

I have no interest in food photography but love these videos! I have a lot of kit and it makes me just wish I was smarter before I bought it. 2X Nikon D610’s can be picked up for like $700 as well. A Tamron 45mm 1.4 and a 100mm macro and you’re done like you said.

100mm macro lenses tend to be f2.8. If that aperture offers sufficient fall off for portraits, you're good.

The cameras and lenses on your whiteboard are "peanuts" against the flash equipment and everything else, you have in your studio, lol! Oh, and your light stand at minute 8:41 isn´t a foldable Manfrotto heavy duty 126BSUAC light stand, which is made out of steel...and which is MUCH heavier than a C-stand (nearly 17 pounds/8,3 kg vs. 11 pounds/5,5kg 40" C-stand). This type of light stands are my "tiny" ones...my main light stands are wind up´s in three different sizes (for very heavy light shapers, like a 20cm fresnel box,...or booms). C-stands doesn´t have air cushioned sections, so i don´t want to use C-stands for my flash units.
It is funny, that photographers on youtube are always comparing C-stands with flimsy aluminium light stands, to show the audience, how sturdy the C-stands are, lol! But nobody from that photographers would show, what would happen, if they would "accidentally" open the locking knob below an extended section on a C-stand...with a compactflash monoblock on top! Outch!
Also the footprint is much smaller on a C-stand (95cm diameter) than on a 126BSUAC (126cm diameter) or like on a 087NWSHB wind up (128cm diameter). Most of the time, i don`t need additional sandbags, to "nail" my light stands on the floor, like i would need on a C-stand.
C-stands was made to support the flags and scrims in front of the big hollywood floodlights (which you would and could never put on a C-stand!). C-stands aka Century-stands was originally made for the cinema world. This is the reason, why C-stands aren´t air cushioned, like photography light stands. Photographers did only "adapt" them to the photography world.

I'm not sure I agree. If you're in a technical field that you can sit and craft a lot then the "newness" of the gear matters a lot less. But, if you're photographing people - I disagree. I am cheap where I can be - in the studio we still run on '09 and '12 macs because for tethering it's all we need. But our editing stations are M1 Max now. The fact is that every time I've upgraded my camera I've regretted not doing it sooner. Because it is, in essence, a force multiplier. As my AF became better it is as if all my lenses are improved. I have less missed shots (of which I have had many). Sure, I'm pretty good with manual focus. But, anyone who thinks they can manual focus faster and more accurately wide-open than modern high end systems is not working with a challenging subject. I make consistently good shots, faster, because the work benefits from 2nd tier cameras (like the R5). The system can be truly silent as necessary. It can avoid LED and fluorescent phase issues automatically. The AF can lock on to eyes extremely accurately. The latitude is much greater than my 5D4's. WSYIWYG EVF means you don't miss exposure much in a dynamic situation. If you're a beginner any camera from the last 10 years will get you started and certainly a 5 series camera is a good choice. But, if you're an intermediate photographer you may be holding yourself back for short money. The $1500 you may be saving may cost you time and missed shots that you would have otherwise been able to capture. The old rule is put your money in lenses and there is truth to that. But, don't skimp on the camera - because it isn't what it used to be. It can have real material advantage in terms of efficiency and output - especially if you photograph people. There are shots I could not have taken with my 5D4 that I have taken with the R5 that were once-in-a-lifetime. My 2c.

  • @sidestreetvideoproduction7278
    @sidestreetvideoproduction7278 5 місяців тому

Unfortunately I can't rent gear. Where I live there are no rental facilities nearby. I couldn't justify the rental days for use and shipping. I have a 5D MkII and just purchased a FUJIFILM GFX 100S. I have been using the 5D MkII since 2008. Some of my lighting is older than that and works great. C-Stands are a great deal when you consider how good they are and how long they last. I agree that the concept and ideas are the most important and what the client cares about.

I said you dont need all that, you can hire them if you need one now and again. He said he might. Said think what all this is costing you. Even the camera body cost £5000.
He wanted to be a professional photographer and saind he needed them or may do.

  • @shaunmaddox

To become a professional photographer all you need is a camera lol. If Terry Richeson can make a career from point-and-shoot throwaway cameras, I’m sure someone out there can turn a toy camera into a professional tool. It really boils down to voice and style. Who and how to sell it is another aspect. Unfortunately, we can’t expect to make a career taking pictures with point-and-shoot throwaway cameras. But when you become good enough to a point where your camera doesn’t matter, that’s when you are good. That’s when you’re experience enough to invest on what’s in front of the camera.

I shoot witt twi 5d3s , 70-200 2.8 is ii , Tamron 27-70, 45.18 and 15-30 , elinchrom quadra hs and btxi strobes ans I . Probably paid 25procent of what they cost new and all im great condition . 400 dollar for one of the cameras and 270 dollar for the 15-30z When i buy new stuff i try to think what has the biggest impact om my photos , its usually not a new camera but new backdrops , c stand etc.. just curious you said you had a 90 and 100mm why two so close ? I have one from Adorama that I like also. I like the turtle base versions because it is easy to remove the base for transport or storage. You can also get different length riser sections for versatility. You can even get a Junior to 5/8" Baby Pin adapter to mount something very low. Make sure you get the arm with the knuckle also. Some stands don't come with one.
