Two years later. Still glad I bought this amp.
I fell in love with this little amp when I tried it in the shop ...will buy it over the weekend. ...but somehow the recordings on these videos don't do it justice. I don't think you can mic this amp the same way you can a cab, am I right? I think a stereo mic set a foot back would be better, no? Cheers!
jangyman I just tend to run straight out of USB into the DAW (two stereo tracks - one wet, one dry (if I feel like reamping).
ASquared007 I couldn't agree more. THR 10 rocks!
Is latency noticable while playing it live in a DAW with VST plugins?
I cannot comment on the plugins as I don't use them (just what the THR and my guitar provide (timbre change depending on where I strike the strings, gain/tone settings, etc). However, I can say that latency will be a direct correlation to your rig. If you have the processing power and RAM you ought to be fine :)
It worth pointing out how well this works as USB recording device and practice tool with a computer. This rarely gets mentioned
I've owned this and Line6. This blows Line6 out of the water.
no not really, you can record it via USB into your computer directly. We just wanted to mic it up to give a sense of what it sounded like in the room.
One thing most reviewer's skip over is how good the software interface for this amp is.
It gives you access to more detailed settings and options that are not accessible via the front panel. Noise Gate and Compressor for example. There is also a great Yamaha App for learning songs. Really a great value.
I played the Yamaha THR10 and the Fender SuperChamp X2 recently at Guitar Center. I can't decide which is better, both are different in subtle ways and are in the same price range. Both have component/USB software for editing and recording. I do feel like the SuperChamp X2 Head is the best all-around amp, 1) because you can use it with any speaker cab (even a 4x12) to really get the most out of the different amp models, 2) you can gig with the SCX2, 3) actual tube tone. That being said, the THR10 to me seems perfect for the bedroom/apartment. It's freaking loud (you would think it sounds like a 1x10), and also ideal for recording since you can mic it up and/or go direct in (or mic both 4" speakers to record in stereo - a feature not to be underestimated). I do feel like the THR10 responded more to your playing dynamics than the SCX2 because it's not colored by the tube circuitry. This is somewhat ironic considering "real tube tone" is the golden standard, but I felt as though the solid state tone from the THR10 was dry, articulate, and crisp (which to me is more preferable for recording and practicing). In the end, I think the THR10 is like an 8-color box of crayons. It covers all the basics and essentials that you would want without adding additional "colors" merely for flair.
I bought this a year a go and it is well worth it. I live in USA but I work in Asia so it fits great on my desk. Don't forget too it can be powered with batteries and it is light as a feather. The light in the front is good if you leave on accidentally and can be turned off through the Great Software program THR offers and theres an app. It does sound like you have a fender with for 10 speakers or 2x12. There is a lot he did not too. if you want play anywhere its great, even in the mountains.
Hook up the head phone output directly to your PS
or if not to another amp/stack.
Simply amazing!
Boxiness could be the ribbon mic's though...I usually put a tele through it, and whether it be that, PRS, SG, or whatever, it's pretty much full range.
your cameraman is drunk
On the "pro" side of things, he works for beer.
Thanks for a in depth review...have been searching for a small portable do it all box...will head out today and get one for Xmas...a review that just does it!
I recently had my amp die on me while I was on a 9 day tour. I picked up this amp just on a whim and mic'd it with a shure microphone and it sounds better than my Peavey Vypyr did.
Btw, you forgot some things, The effect presets ARE editable. It comes with an Editor and it has an audiointerface so you can directly record your guitar in your DAW by USB and it has a tuner.
This video didn't do this wonderful amp justice, it sounded sort of muddy here. It basically sounds 10 times better if you'd try it in real life!
yes yes and yes this amp is the best for the livingroom
Looks like it's good for busking too.
Yes, it does have a bass setting. I plugged a bass into one at a local music shop and I was impressed how good those tiny speakers sounded on bass. Don't tell @ASeventhSign but when I flipped it over to British high-gain, I played some leads and yelled out "Fire the lead guitarist!"
Just mic'd up the THR speakers with a pair of Ribbon mics
Can i use it as a head to a cabinet?
A bass test would have been great too :(
Great review Rich! Thank you! Got really interested when you were using the clean reverbs, that with a smidge of tremolo would be heaven IMHO!
Now to complain a little - its difficult to judge with youtube sound quality etc. but a similar set of specs, sounds might be coaxed from a Line 6 MicroSpider - mine cost €50!
Saying that - I have no doubt the Yamaha would be head & shoulders above in person and your recommendation only solidifies that! One to think about when it comes time to upgrade!
Stan Smathers I bought one of these and ended up taking it back a week later. I just found the sound a bit ugly and artificial. Plus, the quality of recording via the usb was average at best, especially as it seemed to be dependent on the volume of the amp sim rather than the master volume, which meant getting a clean recording at a usable volume was almost impossible.
I'm not talking about the new VIP series. The 15 is a remarkable amp. The 30 is harder to get good sounds. But, it stands up in practice. Vypyr 30 a stage amp? I've used it and it sounded great, too. If you haven't tried the Vypyr 15 practice amp, it really is an awesome player.
tested THR5 at the store yesterday and sound was impressive... for a desktop amp.
did you guys do realise that you put the mics in front of the bass-reflex and not in front of the speakers? this amp is by far the best sounding modeling amp out there ever, and it sounds very bad on this video..
i have both the thr10c and vypyr vip1 and the yamaha is hands down better tone quality love my thr10c
i own this amp Its very good for practice and also for recording. the software is clunky not really up to date. i want the blue one too for the vintage amps. buy it
Why the microphones in front of the amp ??
Had they added the ability to record the aux-in, then, this product would have been one of the best. Sadly, it doesn't, but, it's still a great device.
No its a modeling solidstate! i was fooled too! played one at a local music store and I NEED ONE!
Can you plug it into another speaker cabinet?
Stone Valley apparently there is not a speaker out. That's a total deal breaker for me.
I've been using the Peavey Vypyr series for a few years as my second and third amps. The 30 for band practice and the 15 for home studio practice etc. I'm curious if this FEELS as good as and SOUNDS as good as the "
Vypyr. I need to get to the music store.
is it mic'd up for the camera audio ? or to send to a bigger speaker ?
Can you sync other effects to either the tap or via MIDI over USB? If you could sync all the effects over MIDI or tap I think that would convince me.
to record on to a computer do you just plug in in the usb and hit record on your DAW?
How can it not be interesting! It's the first of it's kind.
What sort of cab is the one yamaha are using in their THR test with the marshall head and the top of the cab opens up and has a sm57 inside?
definetly like this amp (tho only use britt and modern hi gain) but still i like it so far and no more neibours complaining about my amp (like they did whit my engl blackmore) and kinda hard to find good sounding hi gain on cheap or relatively cheap small amps and this does it... me like
Yeah.... I mean third amp....
because I am married, have a studio and own a Marshall stack to play with my live band.
right THR.
Somebody finally ran a Gretsch through one! Thanks.
Can I run it directly into a PA/Mixer or powered monitor?
actually I use the thr5 think it sounds less boxy?
Does it not work with android rather than ios?
I'm not sure what those notes were on "the BB King lead stuff" :|
can you plug in foot pedals as well?
Is this better than a Vypyr amp?
The flat setting is for like keyboards and the like.
¡IMPRESSIVE WERK AT 5:28! I LOVE THIS THING STAYS ON BRIT HI GAIN MOST OF THE TIME
can you plug it in a cabinet
I say this because I had the Vypyr 30 and I think it sounds horrible, it is one of the worst amps I've owned. The worst was the Mustang I
Is it possibile to record bypassing the Cabinet? How? Thanks :)
The breakout cable would be the AUX or headphone jack ? I noticed there are two knobs to regulate both outputs (guitar and aux/usb) - is that what it is ?
Can i use a wah pedal on this amp?
Blame it on the misses. I don't miss the misses. But I like to play at night later, so, This is a very good solution.
what is flat compared to?
QUESTION!!
I am an absolute beginner and I was just wondering what the "phones" input is for?
It's for your headphones if you'd prefer to not bug everyone around you!
Tony DeLotell Oooohhh THANKSSS! 🤗🤗
this amp is great buy it!!!! Its a perfect solution.
Aww...so no foot controller?
If you have one.
can someone tell me what song he's playing at the beginning of the vid?
Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Last couple of demos I've watched have steered me away from this amp. Prefer the Blackstar HT-1R. Just so much more pure and articulate.
Nice Toy...comes with some stickers?
Many video ads are extremely misleading. This is not, thanks !!!
Hi folks this amp is awesome take a listen to me noodling on my les paul using it, I've also loaded a vid using the strat.
What is that guitar?
+이재윤 Gretsch 5120 Electromatic in white. They are no longer made. Made in Korea with PAF-type Korean pickups, not Filtertrons.
YES
So I guess one of the cons is that you need $1500+ worth of microphone to get this $300 amp to sound like this for recording? ;)
sorry dude, but if you mic it up, we are not getting a true sound of how it sounds unmiced, at home
Very nice amp...really mean no offense...and I'm really very much sorry to say this, but maybe a better guitar player to demo the amp...? Great review though!
I never played the VIP series but I think they sound even worse. I am out of modeling amps forever. There's something in me that makes me hate every single modeling amp out there, all i've tried sound like garbage to my ears. I have a Marshall MG50FX now, the ones that everyone say sound like ass and I love this Marshall, I think it is because it's true analogue not digital.
Oops should have waited til the end
Gary Moore must not be proud of this version lol
"...and the whooa"?
sos una mentira coloradoo!! una bestialidad esa gretsch y ese yamaha tremenda combinacion!!
Don't talk, PLAY!
Sorry guys, it sounds TERRIBLE... check out Yamaha's UA-cam video demo - it sounds wonderful. And a Gretsch for high gain sounds? What on earth were you thinking???!? Poor job, I am afraid.
nope
Anything sounds better than a Peavey Vypyr...
Shhhhh... The guitar players are talking.
Good....but...nothing interesting... :(
I wouldn't be in a relationship with a women who told me what amp i could have. Even if I have to die alone.
It kinda sounds crap
that's youtube for you, you really need to hear it in the flesh so to speak
sounds like a pillow is in front of it...too bad.
cochise riff!
B.B. King would turn over in his grave...
+kenokid So he could hear it better!
Why? BB King actually played through solid state amps.
fuck bb king
Meriadoc Brandybuck?
