Is the sugar in fruit bad for you? - Dr. Eric Westman

  • People are very surprised when they see the food list Dr. Westman uses-there’s no fruit! With other ways of eating, it often seems like the more fruits & vegetables, the better. But keto diets are different.
Fruit isn’t “bad” for you, but when you need to keep your total carbohydrate intake very low in order to lose weight or reverse chronic issues like type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, you need to limit all sources of sugar and starch, and that includes the sugar in fruit. If your carb tolerance is a bit higher, you might have room for berries and other lower-glycemic fruits, but some folks need to avoid fruit altogether for a while. Learn more in this week's video.

I have had such a difficult time getting this info into my thick skull....sugar begats sugar cravings no matter where the sugar comes from candy bar or fruit. When I cut fruit/all sugar out for several weeks...then I just add back a few berries a few times per week with my eggs in the morning I do very well. Side note: my sister has aggressive lung cancer, getting chemo, still smoking and eats a TON of sugar daily...PLEASE TAKE YOUR HEALTH SERIOUSLY FRIENDS...PLEASE. Your health matters!!!!!!!

I wish your sister good health. Lung cancer causes a misery of suffering before it kills you. Any person taking chemo for any kind of cancer has much better chances if they go into nutritional ketosis, which means a diet as close to zero carbs as possible.
But here is a tragic practice: most hospital care will try to encourage chemo patients to eat by giving them sugar foods.
Hospitals do that for all their patients, not just cancer patients. I have diabetes and the hospital dietician knew I had diabetes, but still the food trays, that had a piece of paper saying "diabetic meal", came with sugar muffins, apple juice, orange juice, banana, jam. Yogurt made with rice starch. Not every single hospital is like this, but the three hospitals in my area are like this. We have to unite to get the food guideline for registered dietitians changed to allow institutions (hospitals, schools, old age care homes, military, lunch cafeterias in businesses) to offer low carb - high fat menu. Now it is the opposite. Institutions will insist on serving vegetables oils, not animal fat. Insist on 50 percent carbs, not low carbs.
In the long run society must change. Rates of cancer, diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, auto-immune disease, you name it, are all going sky high.

Fruit like avocado pear, olives and tomatoes are fine. I eat some berries (blackberries, blueberries) in my full fat yoghurt once a week or so. I try and stick to 50g of carbs (net) per day, which is around 10% of my daily calorie intake.

I reversed my severe insulin resistance removing all refined sugar from my diet and ate fruit instead. I effortlessly lost 23 kg. Fruit is super healthy. The problem is when too much processed high fructose sugar spills over to the liver. The study from 2018…. The small intestine - a new player in fructose metabolism:
“We were surprised to find that the small intestine metabolizes almost all dietary fructose, especially for modest doses of fructose like those found in fruit,” explains Rabinowitz. Data from the present study show that ∼90% of dietary fructose is converted into glucose and other metabolites, such as lactate and glycerate, by the small intestine before it reaches the liver.
The researchers found that they could overload the metabolizing capacity of the small intestine by feeding mice a high dose of fructose. When the small intestine was saturated with fructose, increased amounts of unmetabolized fructose entered the liver and some even entered the colon, where it fed the microbiota.
The researchers propose that the small intestine shields or protects the liver from fructose toxicity.”

Fruit IS good for you. If youre eating low fat then the fruit sugar helps. Avoiding the Randle Cycle and eating in a huge energy excess then of course fat will be storing-as its 98% storable as fat.
You can eat high carb...be active (healthy metabolism & mind and body should be active) then keep fats low and protein moderate or low.
C70-15-15 works well and still lets the body oxidise fat on a high carb diet. Breathing out fat while you exercise. Creating high Insulin Sensitivity. All the lean Asians and Africans who ate non westernised high carb low fat stayed lean due to being metabolically healthy.

I would never subscribe to a course that says that meat, poultry, fish and eggs are your main source of protein. This shows you know nothing about protein sources and the body's needs. Mother's milk is less than 1% protein and this is for a growing baby. Most vegetables and fruits etc., are between 15% and 20% protein in the superior form of amino acids which are far better source than dead,
embalmed animals full of antibiotics, and many other carcinogens. The tiny amount of training doctors get regarding diet is funded by the meat and poultry indu$tries, etc.

I know Dr Westman supports both ketogenic and carnivore diets. Meaning for some patients he works with, they eat some vegetables while maintaining ketosis by limiting the quantity of carbs.
That does not work for me. I can't nibble on lettuce without wanting to eat more lettuce. Next thing I know, I am eating 3 whole heads of lettuce. And I will drift from the lower carb, greener lettuce to the iceberg lettuce or whatever has even the slightest bit more carb.
I eat carnivore, mostly beef but also fish, eggs, and sometimes butter. And I STILL count the carbs. Yes, carbs in carnivore. An egg is half a gram of carb. There are days when I eat 10 eggs, and I count that as 5 grams of carbs. I don't fret much about it, but I keep in mind I want to stay under 10 grams carbs per day. So I won't eat 20 eggs in a day.
Beef liver has carbs in it. About one-percent carbs by weight. So if I eat 200 grams of beef liver, I ate 2 grams of carbs.
And regular beef has carbs in it. A little less than liver, but still in the half-percent to one percent range. And it happens often enough that I eat a kilogram of beef in a day. That's 10 grams of carbs.
So there is no way I am going to add in a minuscule piece of fruit instead of eating beef. Given a choice of a mini-serving of berries, versus a kilogram of beef, I will take the beef every time.

Dr. Westman your method measuring is just like my great grandmothers when she made her own homemade bread. She never used measuring cups. When she showed me how to make her homemade bread she just take handfuls and say about this much and about that much. Maybe I'm a bit anal-retentive when come to getting it right.
But to tell me an apple is this much or that much is not very helpful since any fruit comes in different sizes.

I have question . I am a female and have lost 35 lbs since starting keto/low carb. I love it . It is definitely sustainable for me But for some reason since starting Keto my blood pressure has gone up . I have alway had perfect blood pressure even when I was 50 lbs overweight . At 60 years and younger I had blood pressure around 115/68. My 88 year old mother has this range too. But having lost 35 lbs and at a weight of 145 and height of 5’7 my bp has stayed around 145 or 150 over 80 to 90. I will say that my Keto is dirty Keto but I have maintained that weight for almost a year . I have started exercise and have been doing so for over 2 months but no change in bp .I will not go on medication . The doctor I saw said nothing in regards to bp . Do you have any suggestions?

Do you know how many grams of omega 6 fatty acids (LA, etc) you are eating? Do you use any oils, lots of nuts? Even though this is "Internet keto" territory, try to limit omega 6 consumption to 2-4g per day.

You need to eat some fruit. Carbs are essential. Insulin spikes are necessary. My sex drives goes away without carbs. When I add them back in I'm good to go. With carbs you have to be active and avoid preservatives, seed oils and fillers.

Just my opinion but you said you are “dirty keto”. Perhaps if you are eating a lot of packaged keto snacks or artificial sweeteners that could be doing you wrong. Maybe time to look at a whole foods low carb lifestyle if you have concerns about blood pressure. Another thought is stress/anxiety in your life will definitely affect bp. All the best ❤

Iv'e been on keto for 1 year and stayed within 30g of carbs and I used the ketones blower (and it's worth what it worth I guess) and I'm seeing the keto dietetian soon, but my sister was on carnivores for 1 year and she saw her keto/carnivore doctor and he told her that her ketosis was way out of wack her insulin, glucose, A1C was 11, 11 for somebody who doesn't even touch carbs at all. He told her that she needs to add some carb in her diet WHAT. Yes I guess everybody is different and your body reacts differently I guess. She doesn't eat veggies her body reacts violently but me I can. My weight was all over the place playing yoyo up and down and I re-add a bit of carbs or I should say a bit more because I was between 20 and 30 and my weight stop yoyozing. My sister was blowing a 60 plus on the ketone meter on a daily basis, I was blowing 50 plus and I manage to bring it down within a normal range (before; I was revolving around 28 during 1 year than went up into the 50's). My sister is having a hell of a time to bring it down into a normal ketone range and she is still blowing in the high 40 even if she added some fruits as per her doctor's suggestion. In a nutshell you have to go with what your body is telling you and as far as loosing weight I guess this is also hit an miss until you get into the right combination.

I agree that the sugar in fruit counts in keto, but I originally went on the ketogenic diet because it helped me control narcolepsy. Curiously, the carbs in fruit don't seem to have the effect on the problem that other types of sugars have. Why? All I know is the carbs in fruits are monosaccharides, and the carbs in most other foods are disaccharides and polysaccharides . It is true though that I can control weight better if I stay away from fruit too, so I usually do. Dextrose is a sugar that is a monosaccharide.

The availability of fruit all year around can be attributed to the modern food distribution methods and not something God put in place :) Every now and then when it's In season is not too bad *_if you are healthy_* , having it every day when it's 10F and snow-covered outside isn't God's work.

    • @amisoftau2659

Most modern fruits are heavily hybridized, so that they contain a great deal more fructose. E.g. Original/traditional bananas had seeds and were low in sugar, modern varieties are just candy in disguise - never consume them. Best to limit to original traditional fruits if you can find them, and/or the low sugar fruits such as Avocado, blackberry and blueberry. Perhaps strawberry but it's the highest pesticide exposed mass produced fruit, best avoided completely unless home grown. Avocado is very low sugar and also high fat so eat as much as you desire no limit.
Also; Eat only when in season locally. God designed various food supplies for humanity throughout the different climate regions of the planet. So different diets that match local climate growing conditions can be very healthy and nutritious if they're not mass produced (which uses chemical fertilizers and pesticides - so they're contaminated and also low in nutrients). Of course mixing them all up by shipping them around the planet is an extremely foolish thing to do, and so to is ignoring their toxin contamination..
A significant danger with all the western mass produced "foods" is the contamination with glyphosate. There's so much contaminating the western food supply that everyone's blood will test positive for it's presence. It effectively kills bacteria so that it kills off your microbiome, which is a big problem. The gut microbiome is responsible for up to 70% of all you nutrient absorption. Killing it off with toxins or antibiotics will dramatically reduce your overall health (to below 50% of full health). Note that GMO products have been specifically engineered to be glyphosate tolerant, meaning that they're guaranteed to be contaminated. Never ever consume GMO products. Cheers.

You forget they test isolated nutrients not the fruit as a whole. But i agree ,in moderation ,sadly that mean like having one banana spread to 3-4 days. You have to remember today fruits are nothing like wild fruit. Like wild strawberries are big as a coffee bean and not sweet at all. Mostly sour with a hint of sweet aftertaste. Or raspberry, in wild they are smaller then a pea, and you guest it mostly sour.

All vegans work just on carbs and are lean because vegetables are mostly water and undigestible fiber. So basically they eat carboard soaked in sugar water. And because they eat almost no protein at all they hardly gain or sustain any muscle mass.
