Maybe the Hirekichi denizens in Zembeisho are a better representation of autism. If not that, then I might just get into creating another cartoon, Autisticus Autisticus, and we can all hope that better catches the full range of the autism spectrum.
It may be a bit of a stereotype because he's an inventor, but as an autistic person myself I find that Snork from Moominvalley (2019) is a pretty good representation! My partner, who's also autistic, sees himself in the character a lot as well. He doesn't feel comfortable with touch, or too much noise, he's a literal thinker, is pretty honest and he feels comfortable in his own solitude. There's also a scene that portrays overstimulation pretty well! He's got a whole episode dedicated to him called "Inventor Snork" which I like a lot, where the main character learns to respect him as who he is. I personally recommend it; it's a pretty good series in general, and very wholesome. I know of another character from the same series named Snufkin, who I find to be a very good representation of a (coded) autistic character with social anxiety. Also having some episodes dedicated to him, as well. Like "Snufkin and the Fairground". (My favorite episode).
I think Gordita from Primos is a good example. The episode Summer of Cuadros shows off her autism in a really inspiring way with her learning to understand the true meaning of art in her own way. I highly recommend it.
June Chen from The Ghost & Molly McGee. She even says "Im autistic. Sometimes my honesty is too much for some people". Shes apparently voiced by an actual autistic girl.
I gotta be honest, she's really disappointing rep. Other than 2 occurrences, you can kinda just forget she has autism cause she serves the purpose of being extremely smart, which I consider a bad depiction because it just perpetuates that every autistic person is a genius and not someone with their own way of working. Basically, genius autism is overdone and stereotyped by Hollywood, and it's worse that she hardly ever gets used so you can kinda just forget she's autistic
@@FizzyCreativeControl But she’s not a supergenius, she’s smart and she’s interested in very specific things. She suffers from being chronically offscreen, but they still did a great job with every little scene she’s in. There’s some very subtle details they got right. But the best part is that everyone accepts her for who she is, she’s not treated like a burden, and she’s not a savant either.
@@FizzyCreativeControlthat’s kind of how I am though I’m autistic and I always am used for my smarts because my brain stores my special interests but my brain stores so much information that it can shut down but no one ever knows because I hide the tears and fears and overstimulation.
I'm autistic and my special interest is doll collecting. I've been a huge monster high fan for many years, and Twyla has always been one of my favorite characters. I felt like she really resonated with me and I guess I know why now. When I watched her first appearance in the new show I cried. Seeing well done authentic representation of an autistic woman in a series that already means so much to me is the best feeling. Thank you for covering it 💞
Monster High is a new special interest for me. I love that Twyla is autistic now! I'm mostly interested in G1. I just watched the movie 13 Wishes and loved her in that!
@squirtle7G1 One of my special interests is Pokémon,i love that franchise; I usually played a lot(including rom hacks),watched the show and movies, and also collected pokemon cards. But at before,I didn't realize that a autistic person was also the one who made pokemon in the first place(I was surprised at that).
Same! Although I haven't been into Monster High since I was a kid, i'm kinda dipping my toe in a little bit. I'm definitely gonna get a Twyla doll now!
I want to add some stuff about Twyla- In one of the background clips you used, her talking to Lagoona (the sea monster character), she's talking about overstimulation and stimming. I think her exact line is "when things are too much for me, I twist my bracelet, and it helps me calm down." Also, her voice actress is Kayla Cromer, who is Autistic as well. And her character song, Out Of The Shadows, was performed by an Autistic nonbinary musician, Tangina Stone.
I don't know anything about Monster High, but I've heard of Kayla Cromer. I didn't watch it much, but she used to be on a show entitled, Everything's Gonna Be O.K. More recently, she played Charlie, a med student with Autism, on The Good Doctor. But I didn't know that she also did voice over work. That's awesome! 😀
He not only puffs out the steam headphones but he also flaps his ladders when he gets excited or anxious or upset (like how some autistic people flap their hands, I know I do that a lot), and he has a special interest in not just schedules and time tables, but also humans, which I think is cute and clever since for a lot of autistic people, it's trains that are the special interest (DEFINITELY was for me as a kid and even now I still watch Thomas every now and then because the introduction of Bruno got me back into it), but for a brake car which is part of a train, it's humans. I love Bruno, I relate to him so much. I'm so happy my childhood special interest, Thomas the Tank Engine, now has a character I can really see myself in.
@@noahthe0tter If you want to see Bruno in action I have three episodes to recommend. 1. Shake, Rattle, and Bruno 2. The Waiting Game 3. Bruno's Blustery Day All three of these episodes focus on Bruno and you can see the autistic traits I mentioned in my other comment on full display, as well as his friendship with the others. Also something you'll definitely notice in the US version is he speaks with the "autistic accent" and that's not even being put on by the VA, that's his normal voice! I'm so glad they got an autistic kid to voice him!
Bruno is also voiced by an actually autistic kid in the US/Canada version as well! Really shows the effort they put into it, along with bringing on actually autistic writers to write and develop Bruno's character and actually autistic advocates with ASAN. I love how the other characters don't look down on or make fun of Bruno, they accept him for who he is and help him out when he needs it, and he helps them out when they need it too, because that's what friends do. When I learned about Bruno I was so giddy and excited that there was finally a character in my favorite childhood show that I could relate to, and boy, do I ever! I see so much of myself in Bruno it's insane, and I absolutely love it. 😌👍
Arthur did a really great job teaching about autism, especially the example brain gives on how you seem normal in your eyes, but to everyone else they seem weird and do some funny stuff is actually normal for them
Usually, I’m not a fan of the “X is ‘different’, so X must be autistic” breed of theorizing, but recently I rewatched The Muppets 2011 movie. Walter being a puppet in a human world is portrayed as something of a disability, but leads to him becoming hyperfixated on the Muppets, as they showed him it was ok to be childlike. His brother Gary becomes his caretaker in adulthood, much to the chagrin of Gary’s girlfriend Mary. Hell, his human form in the “Man or Muppet?” song is literally Jim Parsons. I don’t know if I’m properly putting it into words, I hope my point stands. Even before I realized that, I’m forever bitter they introduced one of the best “legacy” characters in a franchise reboot, then barely did anything with him afterwards. :,/
I actually didn't think about Walter being autistic coded! I'll have to cover him in another video. I think Disney made a surprisingly good move with the 2011 Muppets movie
I love Twyla from the G3 Monster High show. She's voiced by an actual autistic person, Kayla Cromer. She represents Hyperacausis (sensitivity to sound), is shown stimming with her bracelet, Asking for accommodations like noise cancelling headphones at the school dance. We see her face extreme stress in one of the episodes that overstimulates her and sends her into a shutdown. And one of her dolls come with earplugs plus all her dolls have cobwebs in their ears
An autistic coded character that always resonated with me (aside from obviously SpongeBob) is Pocoyo, personally a quite exceptional exponent for character around the spectrum 💖✨💖
It's relieving to me that autistic characters are given a sense of autonomy and aren't just walking meltdowns OR supergeniuses. There's real nuance to them and how they're written. Sometimes we all have those awkward moments, but I don't want to be treated like I'm made of glass or completely foreign or anything. I'm glad none of these examples forgot that part, yknow? For me personally, it's not a disability. I don't care if it's classified as one, because the way it affects me doesn't make me unable to do day-to-day stuff, and I really don't want to be pitied. It's what makes variety in these characters so fascinating
There's different levels to it of course. I don't really see it as much of a disability myself but I definitely use disability services just because society wasn't really made for people like us. It's been very helpful makes me feel better about myself.
Maud Pie from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic seems like she could be autistic coded. A few other characters from the show have been headcannoned as autistic, too, but Maud stands out to me the most.
Autistic coding I wasn't expecting was Ortega from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. He's passionate about Fairy-type Pokemon and machinery to the point of making Pokemon-powered cars for him and his friends. He avoids unfamiliar people if he can help it, gets frustrated easily, speaks bluntly and has trouble understanding people. Part of the DLC has you help him understand dialogue from a short story he's reading for class. When I saw that part I literally said out loud, "Oh, you're autistic!" lol I also second the Extraordinary Attorney Woo recommendation. It does rely on tired tropes a couple times but it's overall pretty good.
There's actually a lot of autistic coded and neurodivergent characters in Pokemon. The creator is autistic himself. My personal favorites are Cynthia, Penny, and Marnie.
Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but Entrapta from She-Ra is incredibly autistic coded! Her hyperfixation over robots and tech, and her struggles socially with interacting with people rather than machines, often missing social cues. I vividly remember a scene in an episode where another character was clearly upset and she just continued talking about her tech like nothing was wrong, causes other characters to finally snap at her. She literally said "Are you all, mad at me?" After the others expressing disbelief that she was only just now figuring that out, she said "I'm not good at people, but I am good at tech. I thought maybe if I could use tech to help you you'd like me." She's such a fantastic character and I love her!
I LOVE this version of monster high! Just for the simple fact that none of the main girls r their original stereotypical skinny tall selves. I haven’t been able to watch more than the first few episodes because I don’t have Nickelodeon so I didn’t know they had an autistic character! That makes the show even better!
Another show that I personally recommend is a sweet little BBC show called A Kind of Spark. It's based on a novel written by an autistic author, most if not all of the cast and crew are neurodivergent, and it follows an autistic girl named Addie who becomes hyperfixated with a witch trial that happened in her home town, which may have involved another autistic girl.
One small correction since Monster High is a special interest of mine: while the original webisodes and doll line came out in 2010 the show that you watched is more recent! This is the third generation of Monster High, and while fans are definitely divided on the new series, most people agree that Twyla is good representation. I also feel that it fits with her character in the original series :)
I personally am upset that Clawdeen is a tomboy now instead of a diva, and that they got rid of Draculaura's accent. I don't mind changing Lagoona though since she was the least interesting of the cast in G1. I'm also sad that Ghoulia doesn't seem to appear very often in G3! Ghoulia had such a great personality in the original show - which is a feat, because she only spoke Zombie.
@@ToastyNoneofyourbusiness I agree, while I like Clawdeen in the new series I do miss her original version. I also think Ghoulia is a missed opportunity for nonverbal rep and to teach kids about other ways of communication like sign language or speech devices
There’s a show on Netflix I’m currently watching called Extraordinary Attorney Woo and the main character, Woo Young-Woo, is autistic and can remember complex stuff, just like I can! I feel like that’s a pretty good rep if you wanna cover it.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is like the only Kdrama I watched on Netflix lmao Its a really interesting series, especially since it addresses autism in a non-US setting.
Nice video! In Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, there's a character named Max who is Autistic. I'm Autistic too so I love the fact that more shows are introducing Autistic characters!
One of my favorite autistic-coded characters is Tomori from Bang Dream: It's MyGO! They never outright say she's autistic, but she's often non-verbal, enjoys collecting small items, has trouble communicating her thoughts, and feels outcast because she processes her emotions differently than her peers. I highly recommend checking the anime out, especially the 3rd episode, which is shot from Tomori's perspective.
1:32 - When this episode aired, I remember people posting this giraffe everywhere and the kid getting spooked by it. (The initial moment still makes me crack up)
on the topic of monster high i think the gen 1 character ghoulia yelps really works as my particular form of autism. she's really smart , loves comics and is an artist as well. but because she's a zombie she cant get her thoughts out to most people except her closest friends. the cartoon shows how a manipulative person might over step an autistic persons friendship . I've compared my autism to having a scratched hard drive or a super computer on a 15k dial up modem, the knowledge is there getting it out so others can understand it requires some work.
OMG, LOVE YOU DID THIS, LOVE THIS REVIEW AND HOW EACH ASPECT IS CAUTIOUSLY DESGLOSSED, HOW YOU USE BOTH YOUR EXPERIENCES AND FACTUAL ELEMENTS AS JUDGEMENT, THE VARIETY OF EXAMPLES YOU CHOSE... EVERYTHING, I LOVE THIS CHANNEL 💖💖💖
It's nice to see someone finally be positive about the new Monster High G3 show for a change. I've seen many people bash it and say how it got "ruined" with their main arguement being the characters looking/being different than how they were (Draculaura is chubbier, Frankie is now canonically non-binary with they/them pronouns, Lagoona's skin is pink and not blue like how it used to...) when in reality: I think they all forgot what this show REALLY is about 💀 It's not a dress-to-impress core show where every character needs to be white, skinny and typically "pretty" and where everything that matters is the aesthetic. It's a wholesome cartoon which was meant to teach it's young audience about how everyone is different and how it's okay to be unique, and it STILL does that! As someone who grew up with G1, I LOVE G3 and I love Twyla! (although my favorite character is Frankie, lol) There's a possibility I'm autistic myself (I've done a lot of research and noticed how I share a lot of traits, however I don't want to say I'm self-diagnosed, because I know how that may sound to most people. I'm looking forward to getting an actual medical dianosis in the future tho!) and honestly I love and adore how they represented autism in the new show through Twyla. She's adorable, I love her and I relate to her a lot (mostly bc I'm also super sensitive to loud sounds and tend to get triggered when I hear a specific noise that bothers me)
Me while watching all engines go: THIS IS AN ABOMINATION AND A DISGRACE TO THE ORIGINAL THOMAS AND FRIENDS AND WILL FOREVER DISGUST ME!!!!! Me watching all engines go after hearing about Bruno: Perhaps I treated you to harshly…
I love Carl so much. I think he's adorable. There's another episode he's in where he really reminds me of my sister. We're both on the spectrum fyi. George is putting on a show and during rehearsals Carl has to leave because of his schedule. But Carl still comes through at the end and the show goes perfectly. I really like it because it shows while autistic people like to stick to schedules, they are still loyal and reliable. I also feel George himself is autistic, just never diagnosed. While Carl reminds me of my sister, I resonate more with George. I even have a plush I interact with similar to how George interacts with his puppet. P.S. Although never stated in the show, the creator of The Owl House has stated that Luz is neurodivergent. I think she has AuDHD like me. Also Tim Burton considers himself autistic and that explains a lot of his characters and movies.
As an Aspie or someone with High-Functioning Autism as well as a doll collector, I was really impressed by Twyla's Autistic representation in MH Gen 3! Her character is even one of my favorite characters out of all of the characters in MH Gen 3 (the third generation of the Monster High doll line), and I have one of her dolls in my collection as well. I'm honestly happy to see others talking about Twyla and how amazing she is as a character!🖤💜
I kinda think that Deku from My Hero Academia is autistic coded. I really have related to him as an autistic person. He feels his emotions very intensly, has what seems to be a special interest in heroes, tends to think out loud, etc. ☺️
Characters like Mob from Mob phsyco, Saiki from the disastrous life of Saiki k, Komi from Komi cant communicate all come off as being on the spectrum. At least they do to me.
Haven’t seen Monster High, but you hating loud noises is exactly like me. I can’t stand gunshots, balloons popping, and I plug my ear for fireworks. It makes me so pleased that I’m not alone.
if you do a part 2 and never got this one, i think donnie from rottmnt is a really good autism rep from a kids show, i like that he's never treated different narratively (gets around the same plot relevance as the rest of his brothers) and has some really good angst not just with his autistic traits but also with his neglect from his father. (i would like to mention donnie being autistic is never stated in show it was confirmed on twitter but he was written to be autistic by the writers) honestly i could go on about how the deal with his sensory issues like one of his big conflicts in the movie is dealing with his sensory issues and he also seen drinking super plain drinks and having what seems like sensory seeking audio sensory, which is one of the first times in cartoon media i've seen sensory seeking even somewhat displayed. i could still go on, i'd recommend if interested to watch the show or at least watch the movie and maybe a few donnie focused episodes especially the witch town episode.
Reaaaally?? That's an interesting one - I used to watch that show a ton. Thanks for this suggestion! I'm working on a third video currently, so I'll put El Tigre there too
Hear me out... Twist from Fresh Beat Band. He always seemed like the Neurodivergent one of the group. Of course, you can't mention Twist being on the spectrum without bringing up the "Wouldn't it be cool if..." gag where he comes up with these very outlandish ideas to solve a tough problem that shows up halfway through each episode.
I'm not on the spectrum, but I do have some form of CPTSD, which has a lot of overlap in how it presents. Mainly for me, it's certain specific loud noises that really startle me or stress me out. I never got to have characters growing up that had that trait, and I think I would have liked to have them, even if our experiences aren't quite the same. Having characters like these in kids shows is going to help a lot of people express their needs better, and understand the needs of others.
As much as I dislike AEG and feel like it doesn’t represent Thomas well. I do give them credit for how they developed Bruno as a character and how well he is handled in the show. He feels like a character that could exist in the original show! Seeing all these different depictions of autistic or autism spectrum coded characters has been great in helping me develop my own character who is on the spectrum as well along with some of his friends. I’d also hate to be that guy, but Thomas techinally wasn’t a cartoon at first, it was mainly live action models with some minor stop motion. In 2010 it switched to CG, and stayed that way until 2022. Also, PBS didn’t produce the new Thomas series. It’s made by Mattel and Nelvana. PBS hasn’t aired Thomas in years, and it’s mainly been on and off on channels and streaming like Netflix and Cartoonito.
i love monster high. it is my main special interest. i love collecting the dolls especially twyla and cleo. every time i see twyla, i jump up and down.. yay! I’m so glad you talk about twyla!!! i will stop typing now, i do not want my comment to be that long, i do not want to info dump too much here now since i could go on a while lol. amazing video! you have gotten a like from me!
Tecna from Winx Club. There is a whole list of times she was autism coded: S1 E2 - Vallisto, known for it's rich artistic tradition. I love taking these things apart. S1 E3 - The learning curb is steep. S1 E5 - I'd say they're a bit impractical. There is a technical term for the way she's acting, crazy. Yes, that's a good Canis Carniverous, go away. S1 E6 - I memorized it. I'm still suprised she memerized the cafeteria menu for the rest of the school year. Then look for it, we have just over a minute. There's a significant risk factor involved should I calculate the exact number? S1 E7 - Maybe there is a manual online. If we had a manual for the labor. What's so funny? I wasn't joking. Broom is elongated to reach high places. It's 3 feet tall and gives off a fowl musky odor. S1 E9 - Hey, I like my clothes. Stella, please remember our goal is not to socialize. S1 E10 - Spontaneity is overrated, advanced planning is a sign of respect. Be logical. What kind of advice is that? The only logical kind. S1 E11 - A systematic search is in order. It is a member of the emezygle family. Zitbugs live in cold climates. Although conflic occurs in 1 in 5 fredships, I'm sorry too. S1 E12 - It's illogical. Why would you want to do somthing when all that matters is how you look. S1 E18 - From my calculations she on average 14.5 minutes late. Do you know how low the probability of finding a friend like you is? S2 E1 - 100% Chance of fun S2 E8 - Completely Illogical, if you don't believe in fighting don't fight at all S2 E9 - All the neutreants nessesary for an active fairy. S2 E9 - Doomscrolling S2 E11 - Because is not a reason S2 E16 - A big halloween part? Yippee! (Blurting out things she wasn't supposed to blurt out). S2 E17 - Witches are adept in not being found. My plan is clearly the most logical of them all. S2 E18 - Don't be so hard on yourself. Guessing the codex was in cloud tower was a good guess. Everyone makes mistakes S2 E19 - Just because I'm from a digital realm, everyone trests me like I'm a machine. S2 E21 - I burn way too easily, I can't wear a swimsuit. Tecna's agreed to her first makeover. S2 E22 - I didn't even know I could cry. S2 E24 - A pixie's chance of surviving the underrealm is less than 10%. Didget this is completely Illogical. S3 E1 - 28% in that suitcase, and 39% in there. S3 E5 - But if we don't ask her, we wont get in trouble. S3 E13 - It's illogical to try to keep us from the gate. S3 E14 - Tecna always had hope in her eyes, like every time she tried to make a joke. S3 E18 - Logical Choice. Increaseing the air friction around the creature should slow it down. S3 E22 - I say go with your mind. Follow logic. You must go in the other room and give up emotion forever. Luck has no bearing on the outcome. 1st Movie - Once he sees you in that dress, the probability that he'll even lookat your feet is 0. Now there's too much data. Information overload! S4 E2 - Hey, theres an alteration of the propeller in section 1071. S4 E14 - Really? I thought it was the brain. 2nd Movie - No powers, no technology? I'm the most useless fairy. S5 E4 - Oh Tecna, too technical. When I want to figure something out, I just ask someone. Timmy and I created it with a tecno-magic interface and... Tecna, too technical. S5 E6 - I'm sorry if I seem cold. At home on zenith, people don't show their emotions. S5 E8 - Alone in her room while a party is going on outside. S5 E9 - Sometimes I don't know what to say to him in person. It's easier to talk with my thumbs. S5 E20 - We perfer texting. It's easier to talk to each other. S5 E21 - Laugh at all his jokes especially if they're not funny. S5 E22 - Face to face, and heart to heart. It worked with me and timmy. It's completely logical, and totally wrong. 3rd Movie - There's never been a half off sale I didn't know of a month in advance. I'm glad you two still want to joke. Tecna, remember what we said about speaking english before. I don't think Jalatnal is a word. S6 E5 - Tecna, what do you think? Oh, well thats so great to hear, thanks for the input. Tecna, I would appreciate it if you took more of an interest. Sure, I can't wait to hear how it sounds through my headphones. S6 E13 - Without you Bloom, the emotional and physiological vibrations of the group were all out of wack. S6 E20 - I analyzed Bloom's best pizzas and sorted them by taste and texture, and came up with hundreds of combinations. We'll just take the chef's special. S6 E21 - I calculated you chances of approval, and they are 66.6% and rising. S7 E17 - I don't understand why we are moving up a stream. Do you faries need a logical reason for everything? It's fun. S8 E20 - It's very sensitive Tecna, I think you tickled her. WoW S1 E1 - You know Jams. Humor is not your specialty Tecna. So adorable, no comment. WoW S1 E3 - Careful we all want to feel needed, but sometimes we risk being selfish. WoW S1 E7 - Ace is late. The show should have started 2 minutes and 37 seconds ago. Do the logical this. No, follow your instincts.
I have noticed recently that there are very few confirmed animated female autistic characters. Would like it if they made a tv show where both Adults and kids as cartoons on how they handle everyday life and pointing out how stereotypes of having it can impact people views on that person and how masking is very exhausting in order to fit in the everyone and be "normal".
RIGHT? I was just going off in the last video about Hazel from FOP A New Wish and how it’s so obvious that she’s autistic but the show runner (who, by the way, is her voice actress) doesn’t wanna actually confirm it. It’s so annoying to see a girl so relatable in a franchise that would’ve used her to fun of us 20 years ago and yet I’m forced to merely headcanon it. Then again that might be a result of Butch Hartman also being a show runner. In which case, *I DEFY YOU, HARTMAN!!!* 😂
Me too! I remember in one episode that he came with George to watch the Bionic Bunny special with Arthur and Buster. While the cable was being fixed they were telling their version of how it ended. Carl had told them exactly how the show would end because he only saw it once@
Something I’d like to add about Twyla is her doll in the Neon Frights line comes with ear plugs which is absolutely adorable! Edit: also another little detail I’d just like to put out there is according to Mattel (MH’s doll company) is Twyla is one of their top selling characters in their doll lines. It just warms my heart and an explicitly autistic character is doing well meaning more autistic little girls out there get to see themselves in a doll… I love g3 Twyla so much sorry🫶
3:45 I totally get that. I still don't like loud noises, whether it be gigantic crowds talking over each other, fire alarms, etc. I just built up a tolerance. Still dont like it
It's not that big of an anime/manga but I recommend Clara Valac from Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun!! Specifically she gives very strong AuDHD traits and there is a whole thing prior to meeting the main character where everyone always saw her as "weird" and/or took advantage of her(her ability is to create pretty much anything ik that sounds OP). But despite this prior to meeting her current friends she was fully aware ppl looked down on her but looked the other way because she just wanted ppl to play with her. There's just smth about how she's so loud, bubbly, unique, and so herself that I love.
She has unique mannerisms and phases, takes things literally often to comedic effect at times, is straightforward, shown to not understand social cues at times, and on the complete opposite end of some autism reps she is very in tune with emotions. This is all I recall from memory so someone feel free to correct me but just wanted to give some insight rather than just my word for it :)
Some people think Branch from the Trolls franchise might be autistic. I don't really see it. Luz from The Owl house, maybe. Peridot and Pearl are in all likelihood autistic.
I personally think O the Owl from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was autistic coded. Then they went and made a whole explicitly stated autistic character. I hope Max and O meet one day and it becomes an awakening moment for O.
I can't believe the comment I wrote about recommending Pablo not only got popular at the last video comment section but also made it in the video as well. Thank you and great review as always 👍
I just watched some Pablo episodes. I connect very strongly because he’s autistic and has his own world with all his Imaginary friends that help him handle real life just like me. I connect to the Imaginary friends I have better than the ones who are not Imaginary. The only difference is I’m not an artist.
I would like to say that there was actually an autistic Thomas & Friends character before Bruno, that being Theo the experimental traction engine who only appeared in the Thomas movie, Journey Beyond Sodor.
4:56 actually this version of twyla is from generation 3 of monster high which aired in twenty-twenty-something though I'm not sure how much differs from her gen one counterpart from 2013
Not that I’ve seen any of the series one stuff in ages, but she definitely wasn’t autistic/autistic coded back then. There was another character introduced much later that I always thought was autism coded. Jane Boolittle. Very shy, troubling socializing, prefers the company of animals, etc.
THANK YOU!!!! I saw the first few episodes of this version when it was still new and free and LOVED it. I didn’t know how to look it up since the show itself is just called monster high. Thank u so much!
Out of all the autistic characters I can relate to Carl the most because I take things too literally sometimes and I do find some puppets really creepy! Unlike Carl I find trains boring! I'm more into music. I can play the violin and the ukulele! I'm also a big Beatles fan!
Tbh im an autistic monster high fan and while i dont like the new series, i do appreciate the representation they are adding and Twyla's always been a favourite of mine so that makes me really happy :D
The minions are most definitely autistic coded. Yuki Nagato from The disappearance of Nagato Yuki Chan is too. Rina Tennoji from Love Live Nijigaku is most definitely autistic. Phineas and Ferb are both autistic coded. Gene is an autistic coded emoji.
A lot of the Engines do, this is because, thinking about it as a Christian with Autism myself, it seems very likely the Reverend Awdry himself may have been on the Spectrum.
@@simeonyves5940 Eh… I think Thomas has ADHD, Henry has anxiety and depression, Gordon has narcissism, James has narcissism, OCD, and PTSD, Percy has ADHD and anxiety, and Toby has anxiety
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but Marcy Wu from Amphibia is another character that many people believe is autistic. While it hasn't been confirmed, she has a lot of special interests, intensely hyperfixates on things, and seems to struggle socially and finds it hard to make friends As for a confirmed character, Donnie from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is confirmed autistic :D
honestly, im biased since im hyperfixating on it, but ford is my favorite maybe autistic coded character. i dont know if the writers or creators meant for him to be, but bro, ford just GETS me. he has a special interest in weirdness and science, he cant help but correcting people and he doesn't really read the room, there is no way on bill ciphers bloody red earth that ford is neurotypical.
When my sister and I were kids, there wasn't much in the way of Autism representation. Well, we had the movie Rain Man, but that was really more for the adults. It's a beautiful story, though, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, where Hoffman played a man on the Spectrum, and Cruise played his younger brother. It was an Oscar winner, too, so go check it out. But for Autism representation for kids, we didn't really have anything, except for the movie The Boy Who Could Fly. It's also a heartwarming story, about neurodiversity, where a very quiet boy, who possesses the ability to fly, hence the title, falls for a beautiful girl. These are live action, however, and were both from the 80s. In animation, we had nothing. Our generation of people on the Spectrum were pretty much underserved. More recently, though, someone online had suggested that Wakko Warner of the 90s cartoon, Animaniacs, might be Autistic. Even though he was only being quiet because he was based off of Harpo Marx, who was known mostly for physical comedy, Wakko was also very inventive, and mechanical, which is often typical for some people on the Spectrum. His limited speech could've also been due to Autism, though, plus he had trouble tying his shoes. I wish that for members of both mine and my sister's generation, that more attention had been paid to Autism. It's a very different world we're living in.
I had no idea there was a new Thomas the Tank Engine cartoon!!! When I was little I was very into Thomas and the Polar Express because my dad was a HUGE lover of trains. I don’t think he was ever diagnosed as such, but he showed a lot of symptoms of autism in a grown man. Regardless, it’s lovely to hear that something else that I held so close in my childhood (the other being monster high!) now also gets an autistic character!! Additionally: what you said about it being harder for females to get diagnosed is sadly very true. As someone who’s AFAB, I didn’t even find *out* I was most likely autistic until I was 16. And that was from talking to various other friends who are autistic and finding out I exhibited numerous of the same symptoms and shared a lot of the same experiences!
I still feel like Bruno should've been an Engine and not a caboose since it's like they made him a caboose because they're immobile which i don't think is right if you ask me as Autism is a neurological disorder not a physical disability if you get what i mean
I mean, I have seen you play persona at the beginning of your video when you plugged the gaming channel. It's worth saying that both Futaba and Yusuke are peak autism, even if both peaks are on opposite mountains. One is extremely logical, is crippled by simple social interactions and has a photographic memory, the other is a weirdo who's mind makes connections where nobody would think to make them...... Like impulsively buying two lobsters after being enchanted by their beauty
I think two more esoteric autism coded characters in media are Sonny Joon from HerInteractive’s Nancy Drew computer game series and Hideto Mitsu from Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga.
I actually autistic myself and it was so nice to see modern kid shows like ghost and molly mcgee protray these issues i have in life. I mean i actually didn't expect Monster High of all things have an autistic character straight out of the blue
Monster High is becoming a special Interest for me right now, so Twyla being autistic is awesome! But I'm mostly interested in G1. There's other characters in Monster High that I relate to like Ghoulia and Abby Bominable. There's so many cool characters! 😄
While this isn't a piece of children's media, Nicolas Angel from the film Hot Fuzz is for sure autism-coded. He's hyperfixated on police procedurals, he's averse to some loud noises, he's shown as having a habit of repeating things people have said to him earlier on, he takes stuff literally, etc. My autistic friend wrote an essay about this for his university project ^^
I just started watching that show and I really enjoy it because I’m also autistic and I have lots of Imaginary friends and they kind of help me cope with real life. So I’m a lot like Pablo, except for the fact I don’t really draw.
As an autistic person, I really latched on to pablo and related to Many of the episodes when they first came out, my older sister (who’s also autistic) Actually met the voice actor for the mouse lol
I have ASD without knowing it growing up until my parents mentioned to me in my teen/young adult years, saying that I've been developed with that disability when I was 6
I'm Autistic and one of my special interests is Monster High. Twyla has always been one of my favorite characters, so when they chose to make her canonically Autistic in g3, I was overjoyed. I had headcanoned her as Autistic when she was first introduced (along with Frankie). Also shoutout to Monster High for making Frankie nonbinary from a nonbinary person!
Edit: oops! I made the comment before I saw you use a gif of Norma lol Idk if you've seen it, but in the show Dead End: Paranormal Park, one of the main characters is autistic! She doesn’t say it in the show, but it is canon and I believe she says it in the comics the show is adapted from. The creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park, Hamish Steele, is also autistic and the portrayal is based on his experience as an autistic person
Hi, as an autistic Person myself I always love seeing more characters on the spectrum in Media. If you or anyone else is looking for more video game characters there are three that I interpret as being on the spectrum (although this is not confirmed so take it with a grain of salt) which are: Flora, Fifi and Fitz Fellow from the murder mystery game Tangle Tower.
My cousin was on Arthur show back when it aired i miss that show now have not pbs kids show have to watch and it downfall that is going be bankruptcy other than that carl was very cute.
Since everyone's sharing about other autistic characters here's mine: Yumiella Dolkness from the anime Villainess Level 99. It's an otome isekai, and Yumiella is a teen girl who a lot of people headcanon as autistic due to her monotone voice, lack of facial expressions, and taking everything literally. Her special interest is levelling up and loves discussing the best methods to do so. Her character is the only character that i would say "she's literally me!" and i love her for that. Yumiella is also very smart and is able to plan things to her advantage. Like how to politely reject unwanted wedding proposals, and dealing with people who give her a hard time. Words will never be enough to describe my love for her, and honestly you should just give the anime a watch and see for yourself. Yumiella is amazing autistic representation even if it was unintentional. I've never felt so seen in my life before.
Do you think these autistic characters are good reps? 🤔 Lemme know in the comments
Did you know that SpongeBob is Autistic?
Yes! ❤
*Chen, but YES, June is the best!!
Agreed, She's my favorite female character in that show, My favorite male character in The Ghost and Molly McGee is Scratch.
I usually flap my hands or rub them together whenever I'm happy or excited!
@@melissacooper8724 same!!!
Great review. A cute thing Bruno does too is if things get too loud he puffs out a makeshift steam set of headphones.
Oh really? That's great!! I love seeing little autistic touches like that even more
My gosh that sounds cute as frick
1. Shake, Rattle, and Bruno
2. The Waiting Game
3. Bruno's Blustery Day
All three of these episodes focus on Bruno and you can see the autistic traits I mentioned in my other comment on full display, as well as his friendship with the others. Also something you'll definitely notice in the US version is he speaks with the "autistic accent" and that's not even being put on by the VA, that's his normal voice! I'm so glad they got an autistic kid to voice him!
Cool image!
The British voice actor is autistic too
thought you ment Enconto's Bruno at first
Bruno in the UK dub is also voiced by an autistic kid!
@@thebeatlesnerd23 Yes, I know! I love that they did that for both dubs!
@@thebeatlesnerd23 wow
That's still my favorite Muppet movie. I'm also upset with Disney not doing much with the Muppets in general
Bro, I’m going to cry, I had no idea G3 Twyla is autistic!! She’s always been my favourite monster high character oh my goodness I love her so much
HER BEAD BRACELET, my absolute favourite thing to have on me at all times is my bead bracelet too. I’m so happy rn
An autistic coded character that always resonated with me (aside from obviously SpongeBob) is Pocoyo, personally a quite exceptional exponent for character around the spectrum 💖✨💖
Wait, was that a CG show with a toddler in blue PJs, a duck, an elephant and a sleepy bird?
Yep. Loved that show when i was younger. Still do, if I'm being honest. @@mondenkindqueen
Added to the list!
all the ponies are autistic and the cutie mark is their specific interest 👍
I feel like twilight has autism too
I always thought so too!
You know what, yeah, her obsession with rocks confirms that. I thought it was just her being emotionless.
When I saw that part I literally said out loud, "Oh, you're autistic!" lol
I also second the Extraordinary Attorney Woo recommendation. It does rely on tired tropes a couple times but it's overall pretty good.
Interesting! I haven't checked out either of these media, I should do so then. Thanks for the recommendations!
There's actually a lot of autistic coded and neurodivergent characters in Pokemon. The creator is autistic himself. My personal favorites are Cynthia, Penny, and Marnie.
Honestly there are TONS of Pokémon characters that are autistic/neurodivergent coded, across ALL FORMS of Pokémon media (games, anime, manga).
I thought maybe if I could use tech to help you you'd like me."
She's such a fantastic character and I love her!
I love her sm!
and she loves tiny fooooood✨✨
@@animeaddict2202 Entrapta IS my favourite DreamWorks character for those reasons!!!
I actually have covered this one in a previous video!
oh ya i know that show
that show was filmed at my old school !!!
Sounds interesting. I’ll have to look it up.
Sounds like my type of show.
But the actress is neurotypical.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is easily the best Kdrama and I relate to her character so much as an autistic person
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is like the only Kdrama I watched on Netflix lmao
Its a really interesting series, especially since it addresses autism in a non-US setting.
(The initial moment still makes me crack up)
Hahaha. It is kinda scary 😂
To be fair, have you ever seen a giraffe? They’re huge!
on the topic of monster high i think the gen 1 character ghoulia yelps really works as my particular form of autism. she's really smart , loves comics and is an artist as well. but because she's a zombie she cant get her thoughts out to most people except her closest friends. the cartoon shows how a manipulative person might over step an autistic persons friendship .
Thank you very much!!
It's nice to see someone finally be positive about the new Monster High G3 show for a change. I've seen many people bash it and say how it got "ruined" with their main arguement being the characters looking/being different than how they were (Draculaura is chubbier, Frankie is now canonically non-binary with they/them pronouns, Lagoona's skin is pink and not blue like how it used to...) when in reality: I think they all forgot what this show REALLY is about 💀
It's not a dress-to-impress core show where every character needs to be white, skinny and typically "pretty" and where everything that matters is the aesthetic. It's a wholesome cartoon which was meant to teach it's young audience about how everyone is different and how it's okay to be unique, and it STILL does that!
As someone who grew up with G1, I LOVE G3 and I love Twyla! (although my favorite character is Frankie, lol)
There's a possibility I'm autistic myself (I've done a lot of research and noticed how I share a lot of traits, however I don't want to say I'm self-diagnosed, because I know how that may sound to most people. I'm looking forward to getting an actual medical dianosis in the future tho!) and honestly I love and adore how they represented autism in the new show through Twyla. She's adorable, I love her and I relate to her a lot (mostly bc I'm also super sensitive to loud sounds and tend to get triggered when I hear a specific noise that bothers me)
Yes! I love that more people talk about Twyla. I headcanon Frankie as autistic too.
Me while watching all engines go: THIS IS AN ABOMINATION AND A DISGRACE TO THE ORIGINAL THOMAS AND FRIENDS AND WILL FOREVER DISGUST ME!!!!!
Me watching all engines go after hearing about Bruno:
Perhaps I treated you to harshly…
that show has nice animation too, it's weird to see the characters act like cartoons, but I like it somehow
Yes you did. This is way better than the 3D animated monstrosity.
“No one understands you or your sense of humor, talk really loudly and jokes they tell aren’t that funny to you.” Damn that hit close to home.
Donnie, in Rise of the TMNT, is an EXCELLENT representation.
Like kaido shun i think
0:18 Bruno The Brakecar is my favorite!!! He's my boy! He's the goat!
I will be doing a follow up to this yes! I have already overed Donnie in a previous video, but I've seen enough new suggestions to warrant a new video

@@thecoolcongle5128 Oh my god I remember Fresh Beat Band! And Twist was always my favorite...now I guess I know why XD
As an autistic kid who also has ADHD and anxiety as well, this makes me very happy

Tecna from Winx Club.
There is a whole list of times she was autism coded:
S1 E2 - Vallisto, known for it's rich artistic tradition.

As a autistic person I like loud music
This is something I needed today The day gets a bit brighter when Noah Uploads
No problem Trouge! I'm happy to make you feel better
Begging you to mention hunter from owl house. He is just the best little snowflake ever. My favorite character other than king. 😊
Yes! I relate to Hunter sooo much💜
I have noticed recently that there are very few confirmed animated female autistic characters.
I like that Carl comes back in later episodes and isn’t just a one off character
If you do a third video then I suggest Entrapta from the 2018 She-ra cartoon
Oh, good idea ! I havent seen that show
I have Asperger's Syndrome as well. I'm very intelligent with video games and movies, but I have trouble understanding feelings and socializing.
3:45 I totally get that. I still don't like loud noises, whether it be gigantic crowds talking over each other, fire alarms, etc. I just built up a tolerance. Still dont like it
Yeah! I get overstimulated easily with loud noises
@@noahthe0tter it gets a bit easier to tolerate as we age, but yeah
@@mondenkindqueen i would watch that, even though i am no longer of the intended audience for that show
Luz is ADHD so if she was autistic she’d be AuDHD. Don’t worry if you didn’t know since that’s mentioned off screen.
@@Acedragoncakeeaterall Dana said was that she was neurodivergent. She's never explicitly stated what Luz has.
In a follow up interview Dana states Luz has ADHD (replying to my comment since UA-cam keeps giving me error 400 when I try to reply to yours)
I can't believe the comment I wrote about recommending Pablo not only got popular at the last video comment section but also made it in the video as well. Thank you and great review as always 👍
Thank you very much! Pablo was very good indeed!
I just watched some Pablo episodes. I connect very strongly because he’s autistic and has his own world with all his Imaginary friends that help him handle real life just like me. I connect to the Imaginary friends I have better than the ones who are not Imaginary. The only difference is I’m not an artist.
In fact, thomas original show wasn't in stopmotion , it was made with models
@@eduardolima-t9o Yep, that's correct!
4:57 Monster High didn't debut until 2022, and their web series (the first version of the property) debuted back in 2010.
I would like to say that there was actually an autistic Thomas & Friends character before Bruno, that being Theo the experimental traction engine who only appeared in the Thomas movie, Journey Beyond Sodor.
I can't believe the new version of Thomas (That is hated so much) actually represented autism so well.
WHY DOES EVERYONE FORGET ABOUT THE DAD ON BLUEY!!!??? (no not bandit)
Chloe's dad, you mean?
@@cabin7slytherpuffempath yeah!!
Aw bless his heart yes him 🥺😭💖 /gen
Norma from Paranormal Park is also autistic and I personally really connected to the way she is represented
She's a very good autistic rep, agreed!
As someone who was diagnosed with Aspergers (or I guess it's now called "autism spectrum disorder"), I find this to be an awesome video!
Thank you!
Twyla also gets a boyfriend later in the show, which is really cool from a representation angle :] not something you see often
Hey so in an episode of The Good Doctor, Shaun ends of helping a patient with autism, who is played by an actor with autism
Ooohhh yasss ttte and mh cameo!! I love them both so much, oh can I also mention Marcy wu from amphibia and entrapta from she-ra spop
Here’s another suggestion: Duck from Thomas and Friends. His autism may not be revealed but he does have a lot of traits.
Awesome! Added to the list
@@noahthe0tter Are you make a part 3? (Just curious)
@@simeonyves5940 Also, saying that Awdry is “secretly autistic” is just disrespectful
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but Marcy Wu from Amphibia is another character that many people believe is autistic. While it hasn't been confirmed, she has a lot of special interests, intensely hyperfixates on things, and seems to struggle socially and finds it hard to make friends
As for a confirmed character, Donnie from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is confirmed autistic :D
honestly, im biased since im hyperfixating on it, but ford is my favorite maybe autistic coded character. i dont know if the writers or creators meant for him to be, but bro, ford just GETS me. he has a special interest in weirdness and science, he cant help but correcting people and he doesn't really read the room, there is no way on bill ciphers bloody red earth that ford is neurotypical.
I WILL be discussing Ford in tomorrow's video!
@@noahthe0tter OMG OMG OMG YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY HELL YEAH TYY AAAAAAA (im hyperfixated on gravity falls rn-)
when I was 7 I was fan of Twyla
I was diagnosed with autism in April this year, she's so important to me
When my sister and I were kids, there wasn't much in the way of Autism representation.
I love these videos Noah. Keep up the amazing work.
There's a CBC Gem show called Hop with an autistic character voiced by an autistic woman.
I’m female and I’m autistic. Makes me glad to meet Twyla
You Should really check out the show Run Jump Play. It’s about kids on the autism spectrum who play sports. It’s very good autism representation.
It’s on UA-cam
Probably one of my favorite autistic-coded characters in recent time is Cofi from Chikn Nuggit
I don't see it
@@thecoolcongle5128 well, everyone’s different
Interesting! I've never seen Hot Fuzz, I guess I should now if it has a good autism rep!
even precure has an autistic-coded character (miyuki from smile)
Oh interesting! I should look that up too then
Oh my gosh Smile Precure was my childhood! I see her more as ADHD (slight self projection) but I can totally see where she could be autistic as well!
@@cabin7slytherpuffempathwell adhd and autism do overlap and its possible for people to have both
Very true!
AAA THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME ABOUT PABLO
i remember watching it when i was super young but i forgot about it until now lol
I just started watching that show and I really enjoy it because I’m also autistic and I have lots of Imaginary friends and they kind of help me cope with real life. So I’m a lot like Pablo, except for the fact I don’t really draw.
As an autistic person, I really latched on to pablo and related to
Many of the episodes when they first came out, my older sister (who’s also autistic)
Actually met the voice actor for the mouse lol
8:35 idk if he noticed it but bruno is animated to not keep much eye contact too as another autistic trait :333
Someone said Captain Holt was autistic for some reason. The only thing I can think of is the marshmallow scene.
Edit: oops! I made the comment before I saw you use a gif of Norma lol
Idk if you've seen it, but in the show Dead End: Paranormal Park, one of the main characters is autistic!
I’m happy to see Twyla on this list!
While not a kids show, nor explicitly stated as being autistic, i would love to reccomend laios from the anime dungeon meishi
Since everyone's sharing about other autistic characters here's mine:
Yumiella Dolkness from the anime Villainess Level 99.
