The Good Doctor is Terrible Autism "Characterization"
After much demand, I finally have dedicated a video to discussing WHY Shaun Murphy is a negative autistic rep and why the Good Doctor fails tremendously at writing an autistic character, and just storytelling overall. Hope you enjoy! Leave your thoughts down below.

Autistic Representation in Gaming is ALMOST Perfect (And What's Holding it Back)
The best autism representation I’ve ever seen is Laios in Dungeon meshi
His entire personality is just AUTISM
Lmao roaming the wastes
I think the best way to do a fictional TV autistic character is to do a twist reveal, where they come out as autistic and it's a total shock to the rest of the characters. The character would be told "You don't look autistic!" However, when you go back to look at previous episodes featuring the character, subtle clues to their autism become very apparent. There have been so many stereotypical depictions of autism in media, that it's time for some non-stereotypical high masking depictions.
I hate good doctor and little sheldon and all characters of sterotipic vision of normal people look autists so cruel elements of good habilits
Autistic characters get to be super geniuses on TV. They get to be super card counters, Sheldon Cooper, Doogie Howser-like doctors, extraordinary attorneys and other savants. I think Autistic characters need to be in more low-ego jobs. I would like to see Autistic characters be lab technicians, struggle with job hunts, or be overeducated for their jobs. Autism could use more humility on TV. I would be more interested in Extraordinary Paralegal Woo or The Good MLT.
literally all the austist from the left are doing the same as him and you say its terrible? hhahahahahaha PS this was made by wokes
I'm on the spectrum and I don't want to come off as offensive but one thing that bugged me about the show was it almost sounded like he had an "autism accent". I genuinely want to know do some people have types of autism that make them talk *gestures vaguely* "like that"?
I do have a cousin who speaks a little similarly. Sort of monotone but still fluctuating slightly. It’s pretty hammed up in the show though.
I can't see anything regarding this show without getting Weird Al's "Like a Surgeon" stuck in my head.
As a person who is autistic, I think the show is fine. I think its fine. I didnt mind watching it. The only thing that bothered me from time to time was that sometimes it could feel a little over the top and that it never feels like Shaun grows that much.
Fun fact: Shawn's actor also plays the kid from Charlie and the chocolate factory.
I think Ghost from Call of Duty MWII and MWIII (2022 and 2023 versions, maybe not as much the 2009 version) is autistic. He always wears a skull mask and goes by the name “Ghost”. At the beginning of MWII (2022), we see him struggle with social interaction, but slowly grows to become best friends with Soap. When he presumably meets Soap, he seems bothered by Soap giving him a brotherly light punch. He only talks to people when he’s giving orders. Another time, he meets Alejandro, and interrupts Soap when Soap was going to introduce him by a name other than Ghost, which was likely a joke and/or sarcasm. Another scene where he is very quiet, he looks slightly upset at a character for commenting on his mask. He makes dad jokes, and he refers to himself as cold.
I feel like Hawks, also from MHA, could be autistic.
Another thing: while autistic people _can_ be geniuses, autism does not _make_ them smart. That “genius” is a side-effect of other factors. Basically, autistic people’s tendency to fixate on niche topics grants them a wealth of knowledge and drive that other people lack. However, knowledge does not equate to intelligence. Autistic savants seem superior to average people only because they’re hyper-focused. (This is how it works in most cases, but not all.) That being said, can we get rid of the trope of autistic people seeing goofy holograms in the air? These writers act like we’re a different species or something.
there was an episode of the good doctor where he was tasked of taking care of a trans kid (i think the issue of the ep was unrelated to the kid being trans it just happened that this trans kid had a health issue) and... he could not comprehend trans people existing? you're telling me THE GUY WITH A LIFELONG SPECIAL INTEREST IN MEDICINE cannot comprehend trans people EXISTING? if shaun was a real guy he would research intersex conditions for fun and would be the guy to bring that up in political debates about trans people. it's hard to generalize about what is and isn't a real thing autistic people experience but i am sure that no autistic person reacts with stubborn denial over learning a new, TRUE thing about their special interest.
Nah my brother and cousin act just like this. Except they're not surgeons...
The best representation of an autistic character I could think of is Maud Pie from MLP.
Wait what? Dr han wanted to bring the show to the west? Why was he mad at surgeon all of the time then? Smh
And. Honestly who cares about "rupresintatewn" in the fucking big bang theory. The joke is that everyone in that show are terrible people. It doesn't pretend to be a serious show. And it ended better than I AM A SURGEON.
As a Asperger gotcha good doctor is terrible offense
Bro has Owtism because it's just hurting what he represents.
I AM A SURGEON! As someone autistic this is stupid.
Sheldon does NOT have Asperger's, he has NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER. The authors of Big Bang alsonstate specifically that they did NOT wrote Sheldon with autism or any existing condition in mind.
I would highlight one of the accidental keynote you gave: "he sees things from a different POV" One thing that f-s me as an Autist, is how our thinking is both "exoticised" & degraded in the same sense. Like. They "think" it's a compliment. But in reality, it's like (un)intentional racists phrase it "OMG! Japanese see things from such a different POV! It's so exotic! It's giving oriental. It's giving...Kimchi." Meanwhile, if we were NT, we were just "natural geniuses". But nope. No matter on the spectrum. We are always seen as the "cute savant" 🙄
As an autistic individual who absolutely adores Steins;Gate, it never once occured to me to consider Okabe as an autistic coded person, but it makes so much sense now that you point it out.
It's fantastic! It's a show I think autistic folks like ourselves should watch at least once
@@noahthe0tterive been saying this for years what is your view on a typical? It might be a Netflix exclusive
I mean makes sense. Japan doesn't explicitly tell you those details. Unlike in the west where people do a big celebration for every "representation" there is. For bad as they could be.
@@maravreloadedJapan have culture where been disrespectful to other people and calling out attention is considered a bad thing.
@@S-treme and isn't that a bad thing? Like. It's called DISrespect.
Anyone see Predator wher aliens try ti weaponize autism?
That's a thing?
“Fear me, for I like sorting my legos and talking about civil engineering.” -The Aliens, probably.
@@noahthe0tter Yup. An Asperger kid finds a Predator helm, destroys his bullies' house, and the Predators want to harness his spinal fluid to make Predators stronger.
I remember my mom forcing me to watch this after I was diagnosed with autism. I also remember not liking anything in it. To make things worse I’ve always hated medical dramas.
This reminds me of Children of the Red Corn, without the respect. That one was also mental/personality disorder = superpowers, but the other characters actually respected the powers, and they were actual superpowers instead of just being "smart."
I just had this video randomly recommended to me by youtube and I did NOT expect to see Steins;Gate in it. I'm pleasantly surprised.
Steins; Gate is forever a masterpiece. El Psy Kongroo 💚
As person who actually have had classmates(adults) with autism, I say yeah is good a representation, what gets people mad is they actually never treat with annoy or spoiled autistic people... I love the fact people like to pretend they want representation but they actually want the show portray people with "blank" as perfect with any fault...
Why is your whole Channel about autism?
Because he has autism and it’s fun to talk about it in media.
I love this movie, probably one of the first media to make me enjoy Sci-fi a little more than Fantasy. And living in Italy and having grown up with Italian version, the Italian cover of "I'm still here", "Ci sono anch'io" by Max Pezzali makes my heart ache with a bittersweet feeling.
I have a coworker with an autistic stepson, and this middle aged woman unironically told me "Autistic people are supposed to be super smart, like that show The Good Doctor." God help that kid.
Oohh that poor, poor kid
Autism is a psyop
So he's a generic Shounen protagonist. End of Video.
Thank you for calling out Sheldon for the TERRIBLE representation of high functioning Autism for comedic effect that it is. I hate Big Bang Theory, and sitcoms in general, since stereotypes through the White, educated, upper class, straight, NEUROTYPICAL MALE gaze abound and haven't really changed since the genre first emerged.
I'm a dentistry student. I'm 4 years behind, currently taking a break year and struggling with a lot with PTSD from childhood and emotional regulation after years of thinking that masking was an option for me. I know this may be a generalization but there is absolutely no way Shaun could have graduated from med school to work as a doctor, given the emotional outbursts and mannerisms he displays in the few episodes I've watched. It feels like they wrote someone with the most cliche characteristics and slapped the doctor degree before throwing him to the hospital instead of taking all the struggles of the process to reach that position into consideration.
Exactly. This kind of autism representation would have shone a lot more in a different setting
The virgin surgeon vs. the chad House
I will never understand how the writing staff wanted us the viewers to think any of this was a good idea when the boss who literally got fired for "discriminating" against him ends up getting proved right when He literally freaks the hell out during his surgery just like predicted. Like no dude, its not discrimination to call out something for what it is. Its like calling it discriminatory to tell a drunk person they shouldn't drive.
As an autist myself, I can safely say I wouldn't be repeatedly screaming "I AM A CARPENTER", if I got fired
Frick'n love Stein's Gate. Shaun feels like a sign post that just says "autism stereotype here." Okabe feels like a person.
Exactly. Okabe is written so much better
House is so much better tbh
UA-cam, how did you know i was thinking about this scene yesterday?
Linhardt had to have been the first time I had ever truly related to a fictional character before, he was honestly what made me start looking more into my own autism and he helped me feel more comfortable just being myself (thus the pfp lol). You point out Linhardt's funnier blunt dialogue, but I've always enjoyed more of his serious moments in his various supports, which show that he's still a living breathing human being who feels bad about hurting others. One of my favourite things about Linhardt being his struggle with the fact that him researching more about his main fixation, crests, will end up being used in warfare to kill people, despite him hating killing. Also the one line that confirmed Linhardt is autistic to me, is the one in his support with Hubert where Hubert straight up says: "You're so good at research, but you only research what interests you, and what interests you can change at the drop of a hat." (phrased from memory, probably not the exact quote).
Sometimes I wish I had movie autism instead fo my regular high functioning one. I could decode alien languages and instantly know how to pilot space ships. But no, instead I'm stuck here for 3 hours focusing on what's the best printing angle to showcase my company's logo, even if they told me that they don't care and I finished my shift 4 hours ago. Also fucked up how the best representations of autistic people are not the ones made to be autistic characters, but characters who happen to be autistic and have other parts to their personalities.
Is it as bad as Big Bang Theory, where the biggest autist is a straight guy played by an obviously gay actor and they're like "Just act gay and we call it autistic."
This is all just reddit repeated bollox. It's just different styles. I love community and think BBT is okay. But I don't think it's because I have some special refined taste, it's just different strokes. I know folk with autism who do act like Sheldon, why does everything need to cater precisely to what you and reddit consider 'good' or 'accurate' otherwise it means it's terrible? Turn the judgement to community then. Look old people are horrible and racist, look religious people are all preachy, look Asian parents are close minded and harsh on their kids. It's so tiring seeing the same bullshit reddit bandwagon criticisms against some things and much more leniency your favourites. Bet you love the IT crowd but where's a scathing criticism on nerd culture, autism and laugh tracks there? Again, not even really a fan of BBT and I love community, but it's just annoying when all the reddit coded folk jump on the same bandwagons.
This list is fucking rslurred
how do we feel about House maybe being on the spectrum?
My mother loved the Big Bang Theory so much, she explained to me that I can't have autism, because I do not act like Sheldon and am not as smart. If I were autistic, I would be better at math and physics. Besides that, she raised me properly. And I believed her. Took me years to finally unlearn all her stupid ideas. I still don't know if I'm autistic, but I will see my doctor in about two weeks and start the process of finding out. I was 18 when someone first thought I could be autistic. I'm 35 now.
