You forgot to mention another advantage of targeted discard. These hand disruption spells CAN provide you tempo advantages in some cases. When your opponent has a single two drop, and a couple of 1 cmc/3cmc+ cards you can stop them from making an optimal play on turn two. This works on other turns as well effectively preventing them from using their mana efficiently.
Love the new category of brewers minute! One of my favorite targeted discard spells is Castigate. WB Sorcery that exiles any card from an opponents hand.
I like this format as well! It would definitely help me learn more about different Magic cards and understand the appropriate time to use certain cards in my deck
In standard, unless you had a Pack Rat, it was always better to use your Thoughtseize Turn 2. That way, you got to see one more card in your opponents hand and nothing they could play on turn 1 was all that relevant (even thoughtseize) In that standard format, I never lost a game in which I got T1 thoughseized and the opponent took my thoughtseize. "nice work, we both mulled and you are starting at 18".
Would love more like this. Another way to use it: check if the coast is clear. Say you’re playing against pummeller or some other 1 turn “I win” combo: see if there is a possible top deck they can have to let them win next turn, or if an ugly block possible before going into combat and not leaving a blocker back.
do more deep delves! managing your resources most efficiently is something everyone can learn more about. this also comes down to situations like "should i counter that or just lightning bolt it?"
Almost every topic is meta dependant... But how about things like 1 Mana removal... Like when is it optimal to bolt the bird?... Do we just leave a fetch up until we actually crack it in decks with fatal push or brainstorm? How about a deep delve looking into brainstorm or serum visions? Like one Mana dig spells?
I would love to see a brewer's minute on discard vs counterspells. In talks of grixis and other UB decks I've often seen people talking about one being better than the other in the given meta or the deck being talked about. They both serve somewhat similar functions. Maybe you could look at pump vs burn or other similar types of cards too.
I play a lot of Canadian Highlander, and when building midrange, you need to have around 8 singleton discard spells to be almost guaranteed to see 1 in a game. This has led me to some pretty spicy cards- cards like Gerrard's Verdict.
I really liked this, since Im a bit of an experienced player but with no real tournament experience thanks to location issues. I feel like a significant part of your brewers minutes are things that an average experienced player should know already. I especially love when you delve into deck brewing, or when you go a bit deep into the theory of things (like when you show some of the actual math). So Im pretty happy about a more deep series of brewers minute.
Two other downsides to discard: land strategies and graveyard strategies. 1. Land strategies like scapeshift can't be hit by discard, and even Tron can only get hit by Thoughtseize but not Inquisition 2. Graveyard strategies makes it a damned if you and damned if you don't scenario. You can get the occasional cathartic reunion vs dredge, but in general dredge and living end aren't affected by discard.
definitely. against tron, I'll play my IoK on the play but not on the draw. U-Tron is a bit different, because IoK can hit counterspells and cyclonic rift and stuff. In GW tron, you'll be lucky to hit a sylvan scrying if not just a sphere or star
question, if you have discard in your deck doesn;t that make your opponent play the spells in his hand for fear of you drawing a duressor thoughtseize and getting rid of that card? if so than the discard spells do influence the late game of your opponent, unless what they play is a spellslinger;s deck and they can use instants if you were to make them discard
More of those videos would be nice. However, how would you play ur discards against midrange/control decks like bg/jund/junk-like decks? Which are simply midrange decks?
I'm huge fan of brewer's minute. I feel sad about there being only one per week :/ Deep delve is an awesome idea! What about talk about cards like nevermore, gideon's intervention and lost legacy?
I like this idea, though I feel like it would be a good idea to get some input from a pro on these. Maybe just a quote or maybe a mini interview. It would lend a lot more weight to these videos on the educational front.
Dear God, please tell Seth, probably better known as “Saffron Olive”, to make many, many more of these videos. I literally just purchased every card I could find on gatherer with the word discard to make a budget 8 rack deck. I feel lost as to which ones to play, and how to use them optimally.
You should do an episode on creatures that are “spells on a stick” in other words spells that also come with a body like Sakura tribe elder or mulldrifter
I would Like if you do a Episode for wach color First. In The counterspell Episode you didnt Talk about other Colors, so i think Every color deserve a Episode First :)
Reid Duke has a very good article about this, where he talks about Thoughtseize specifically, how to better use it or not use it at all, I highly recommend anyone who plays black to read this. www.starcitygames.com/article/26855_Thoughtseize-You.html
Something else that might have been said about what makes targeted discard good: It is excellent against multi-piece combo decks, as it can effectively get 2-for-1s. You gave the example of Thoughtseizing away an opponent's Through the Breach when they have Emrakul in hand - that's a really strong play, because you've used one card to take away one of their cards AND render another one useless.
if this is going to be a thing, which I totally want it to be, you should do one for cantrips. why opt over serum visions or sleight of hand? this would be great
I love targeted discard I usually start topdecking before my modern group (plus they love making crazy combos) getting combo pieces out is looking to be my option instead of kill spells in making my mono black rogue discard deck
There are a lot of stuff I like and absolutly hate about discard. First, I really really like that non blue deck get a tool against combo decks without having to play blue . This seems to be very important to me. Second I absolutly hate it if jund /abzan/ shadow/ whatever deck can use discard to force for example a lili to resolve against blue decks on turn 3 by discarding counterspells. There is just nothing you can do, You either counter the discard so you are tapped out and lili resolves or i dont counter and jund takes your manaleak. This insanly annoys me. the 3rd case would be he sees i got 2 counterspells and just doesnt play his lili which is annoying as well. tldr. I like discard as an disrupting tool to slow down my opponent, but absolutly hate it if used as an protective tool to resolve certain cards.
Deed Delve already has shown me a lot more.
Please do many more!
Mana Dorks would be one I'd love to see
Bradley Ross I second Mana Dorks!
Fourth it?
Great video format, I'd love to see more videos like this. Thank you.

Good point. Should have went even deeper :)
Still deep enough to be engaging. Love the series!
Daniel Hutto Was looking for this!
Brewer's Minute is already ******* amazing. Deep delve just took it to the next level. MORE PLEASE! MANY THANKS!
Glad you like it!
100% do more deep delve. This is exactly what I want
Sweet!
I really liked this format, please more, and I throw in my vote for counter spells.
This is a cool idea. You should talk about counter spells
counterspells could have a several hour long vid, they are actually really nuanced. Especially in the context of a control deck.
ozfan6 cringe
Brewer's Minute is my favourite it's very informative and awesome keep up the great work ^_^
I'd love a Deep Delve: Board Wipes : )
Love the new category of brewers minute! One of my favorite targeted discard spells is Castigate. WB Sorcery that exiles any card from an opponents hand.
I'm going to get into Modern using 8rack... so this video is my dream come true. Thank you Seth!!
This is a great idea for your Brewer's Minute segment. You should definitely do more. It's also reminiscent of Prof's Tolarian Tutor series.
Seth, I really like this idea of a series for brewers minute. It also helps with game play strategy, which is always good to have tips/reminders.
This was fantastic. I echo others here: a deep delve on counterspells would be great.
I like this format as well! It would definitely help me learn more about different Magic cards and understand the appropriate time to use certain cards in my deck
Best series on a magic channel. Great job as always Seth, i'm waiting on an episode about transformative sideboards!
I really like these deep dives and found both the counterspell and targeted discard videos. I have only been playing for two years and mostly casual.
I LOVE THESE THUMBNAILS
In standard, unless you had a Pack Rat, it was always better to use your Thoughtseize Turn 2. That way, you got to see one more card in your opponents hand and nothing they could play on turn 1 was all that relevant (even thoughtseize)
In that standard format, I never lost a game in which I got T1 thoughseized and the opponent took my thoughtseize. "nice work, we both mulled and you are starting at 18".
Yes, more of this. It's good info to know
Nice idea for a series. I'd love to see a Deep delve on the manabase of a deck - how many lands do you play, how many fetches and shocks and so on.
Super sweet idea! More!
Would love more like this.
Another way to use it: check if the coast is clear. Say you’re playing against pummeller or some other 1 turn “I win” combo: see if there is a possible top deck they can have to let them win next turn, or if an ugly block possible before going into combat and not leaving a blocker back.
Duress girl be like "Your head's on fire, son!"
I definitely dig the idea of a deeper dive into stuff like this.
This is a thoughtful analysis. I Definitely want to see more ideas about the use of card effects such as this.
do more deep delves! managing your resources most efficiently is something everyone can learn more about. this also comes down to situations like "should i counter that or just lightning bolt it?"
I like deep delve and Hidden Treasures and I just love/like this channel
I really like this idea. I would love to see a mana dorks episode.
Love it! Didn't quite think of targeted discard for many of the things many deck has problems with. Can you talk about planeswalkers?
Anything brewer's minute is great. More packages or must have cards is good
I like this format, keep it going!
great vid! black is my fav colour and I love discard!
Yeaahhh awesome idea, keep it up with more topics!!!
Definitely would like one on counterspells.
I like this idea. I'd like one on draw spells or maybe even just card advantage spells. Although the later might be too general
Matthew Mccreight Always bolt the bird.
always. always. always bolt the bird
Probably been beaten to death but always bolt the bird is a very well known thing.
The counterspell suite, especially soft counters, would be a great next step.
T1 one toughtsize is so demoralizing in some matchups, great series idea!!!!!
I play a lot of Canadian Highlander, and when building midrange, you need to have around 8 singleton discard spells to be almost guaranteed to see 1 in a game. This has led me to some pretty spicy cards- cards like Gerrard's Verdict.
Brain Pry is literally never a dead draw because it cycles if it doesn't hit, but it works like Cabal Therapy, so it isn't necessarily playable.
What makes counter spells good/bad or playable/unplayable
Counterspells is a good one to cover in the future.
Mostly their cmc
Well, what they provide for their mana is pretty important. Cryptic Command gives a lot of stuff. But yeah, mostly CMC.
Would love to watch deep delve on counterspell, is there one yet?
Great job with this one! I definitely want to see more DEEP DELVES!!
This was so useful. The idea of using different to draw the counter is something I had never considered before. Do more deep dives.
I enjoyed this. Deep delve should be a thing
Yeah, please more of that format ! Awesome content as always !

I would love for the next Deep Delve to be about Bears.
I definitely like this idea
I really like this. It’s really cool
Love this concept. More please. Also, how do you feel about Harsh Scrutiny? I feel like it's a good budget option and underplayed on the whole.
The artwork is fantastic. Duress and thoughtseize looking at eachother lel
This video was great! I'd love to see more in the series :)

I love brewer's minute! I have been playing since the original unglued, but I'm still terrible because no one I know plays
How did I miss this video! Great stuff man!
I'm huge fan of brewer's minute. I feel sad about there being only one per week :/
Deep delve is an awesome idea! What about talk about cards like nevermore, gideon's intervention and lost legacy?
I like this idea, though I feel like it would be a good idea to get some input from a pro on these. Maybe just a quote or maybe a mini interview. It would lend a lot more weight to these videos on the educational front.
I love this keep doing it!
It's a pitty that my "Like" button couldn't be more smahed for another Brewer's Minute episode =/
This is a great series! Keep it up!
This is a great idea. You could improve this by showing more examples of targeted discard spells + the prices for these cards imo.
Good idea!
Man this helps so much. Thanks :)
Dear God, please tell Seth, probably better known as “Saffron Olive”, to make many, many more of these videos. I literally just purchased every card I could find on gatherer with the word discard to make a budget 8 rack deck. I feel lost as to which ones to play, and how to use them optimally.
I love this! I would like to see Cantrips in the future.
I'd love to hear about what makes a good finisher. Not all 6 drops are good ones, and how do you know which is the right kind for each build?
Great idea with so much potential! I'd love to see burn, counterspells, cantrips and pure kill spells!
You forgot about the hidden mode where your opponent has leyline of sanctity so you target yourself to trigger delirium. (Half joking)
This idea is great, go on with it
Like this idea
Is Vendillion Clique targeted discard?
You should do an episode on creatures that are “spells on a stick” in other words spells that also come with a body like Sakura tribe elder or mulldrifter
could you do vanilla creatures like tarmos and anglers and maybe pack rat?
Jaiden Dunehew Pack Rat isn't vanilla
Gustavo Wadas Lopes true
Really liked this. Not that big of a fan of Hidden Treasures, but I really like this.
I love this. You should do a video about Phyrexian mana spells. That one always seems to bewilder new players at my store.
Thought this was an instant deck tech for a 8 rack style deck before watching. 😂
Deep Delve 10/10!
More!
Going to test drive a standard mono black discard deck today at showdown. Hope it goes well lol
Cool
I would Like if you do a Episode for wach color First. In The counterspell Episode you didnt Talk about other Colors, so i think Every color deserve a Episode First :)
Reid Duke has a very good article about this, where he talks about Thoughtseize specifically, how to better use it or not use it at all, I highly recommend anyone who plays black to read this.

thanks Seth...havent got a edh discard deck to work yet.
The obligatory one U drawspells

As an 8-rack player, I have to like this video

I love targeted discard I usually start topdecking before my modern group (plus they love making crazy combos) getting combo pieces out is looking to be my option instead of kill spells in making my mono black rogue discard deck
Just built my 8rack, first time playing anything other than burn. :3
1 drops would be cool
Definitely keep up deep delve
Uh... targeted discard video and you didn't even mention waste not?

like it
Vendillion Clique is arguably the best targeted (technically it's not discard) discard card. It's a little different. If not, then probably K-Command.
Probably mention some decks these are played in, such as 8-rack.
I play 8 rack. lol Discard you all day and then make you take damage for not having any cards XD
Shame they are so damn expensive
