One thing that wasn't mentioned in this video is that he was already under suspicion and had been brought in for fingerprinting & DNA because a few of his neighbors had called in and said that he should be looked into in connection with the murder. So I wonder if he would have turned himself in if he wasn't already being looked at.

While I didn't know Austin myself, I ran in the same circles as him and had many mutual friends. Let me tell you, NONE of them were very surprised. This was in my home town. We were all devastated for the loss of Jessica and, as high schoolers ourselves, absolutely disgusted to learn who killed her.
It was all we talked about in the halls. We expected some middle age man to be caught as her killer. I was in art class when another student interrupted peer critique "JESSICA RIDGEWAY'S KILLER HAD BEEN CAUGHT!" He read the short statement off his phone and when he said "Austin Sig" my heart dropped. He was one of us. The monster was one of us.
This will forever be a core memory for me. Before we knew it was a high schooler that killed her, we used to go out after school to watch the elementary school kids walk home, to keep them safe. After Austin was caught, the parents immediately rejected us. Some acted like it was our fault.
This case is close to my heart. It still hurts.

Its true though bullying is at the center of many of these incidents and the adults will place blame onto highschoolers for it but where is the solution to fix it? when will teachers get a decent wage to help children grow, the parents don't want to have to pay more for public school so they are as much to blame for the wackos created by this bad system, they just need somebody else to blame.

    • @michellementh9651
      @michellementh9651 2 роки тому +186

@@dawfydd What? Are you seriously blaming her mother right now because she didn't take her to school herself? Being a helicopter parent makes kids grow up to be neurotic adults, fearful of everyone. While we should remain vigilant, we should also be able to feel safe in our own neighborhoods. People get abducted within blocks of their homes rather than a mile. It happens all too often and lots of parents can't feasibly take their children to and from school every single day. She was taught to be vigilant, to scream if someone approached her. She may have thought initially that Austin was there to walk with her. Like the OP here said, they watched the younger kids walk to school often to make sure they were safe.

I went to the same high school as Austin Sigg. I can remember when Jessica Ridgeway disappeared. The whole city went looking for her and we eagerly awaited her return. I had asked my Mom if I could help look, but she advised me not to. One day at school I was pulled into the principles office where they asked me if I had known Austin. I hadn't known him personally but recognized him from the halls and common areas. When they told me what he did, I was petrified. Knowing you've been so close to a killer is very uncomfortable. Leaving the office, other kids who had transferred with me were in the hall waiting to hear the news. It shook us all. It's hard to express what a traumatic event like this does to the people of the community.

The tragedy of a terrible crime like this is the impact on the wider community as a whole. Walking to school is something many of us have done and still do in our daily routine. A whole group of kids lost the freedom and ability to experience those simple daily things when he brutally took Jessica's life. Parents worry about their kids being away from them, and kids become scared of living life normally. We become increasingly more insular and scared of being near others for fear of what they "could" do to us. I live in this community and was in high school when this occurred. The murderer was friends with my older brother back when they were in middle school.
This case destroyed our community, but brought us together in a whole different way. I remember exactly where I was when I found out who did it. I was a junior. We weren’t supposed to be on our phones, but we were. We all started seeing the news articles. A girl got up and told our teacher, and she proceeded to write Austin’s name on the board. We were released from school that day and school was cancelled the next. They brought in counselors for us to talk to. My family and countless others met at the local rec center to start the search. They loaded us on school buses to various areas near where she went missing. Daylight to daybreak.
Thank you for covering this case. We miss Jessica more than anything. She was a bright, beautiful, and funny child. I still think about the morbidity of this case. I still see purple ribbons hanging around the neighborhood.

And now a bunch of his classmates (at least some said they went to lower grades with him before they went to college) are saying how nice and caring he was and how he was friends with everyone. Something's not tracking here. Like they didn't want to admit they were bullies or that he was always the weird kid no one liked.
I always feel like the people they interview after who had no idea are lying though. They don't want to admit they always knew that guy was a creep and did nothing about it (even though there's likely nothing that could have been done just for thinking the guy's a creep anyway). @@guusgeluk3693 17 is still a kid. If something horrific and massive is about to happen or has happened people are going to seek comfort from their parents especially when you know it’s the last time you’ll get to. I’m 24 and having just lost my mother last month if I could spend one last night with her I’d absolutely spend it hugging her. Hope you grow out of your weird toxic masculinity/independence mentality sometime.

I'm so intrigued by these unknown cases, even with so many channels covering so many cases every day! Every episode is learning something new, and while upsetting the cases are, I appreciate every upload nonetheless. Great work, Adrian :)

When I first started college I was still living with my parents. We had a neighbor who also worked nights and would come home just in time to wake up her son and help him get ready for school. Then she would send him over to us to ask us to take him. It was only a mile and I thought the whole thing was a massive imposition. What could possibly happen in that sleepy neighborhood only a mile away from school? My sister and brother had walked to that same school all by themselves, why couldn't he? Well, this was eye opening. This video left me in tears.

I remember this story as I grew up in Colorado about an hour away. I was in high school when this was going on and it was crazy. I remember the day the news broke when they found her. Glad you're covering this story

Really well done. This is so tragic from every angle. I don't know if there would have been anything smarter she could have done. These things are so rare-how could you possibly avoid this situation. My heart breaks for her mother and family. She seems to have had an incredible life ahead of her. I really appreciate your compassionate take on these horrific events. To me it's a reminder that we all do need to look after one another, and help where we can.

@@ian12346 Depends, it's not entirely free everywhere in Europe, in some places it comes with additional monthly fees so that you can actually get the services and medication without additional charges on the spot. We call it ''additional health insurance'' here and that still doesn't actually cover every single thing. Free also doesn't mean that it's good. Speaking for where I'm from, the waiting time for seeing a psychiatrist can take 1 year or more. Similar waiting times go for other examinations. Basically, preventive healthcare isn't working as well as it should, but atleast having a critical emergency doesn't break the bank.

This story breaks my heart. On a happier note….I love the new background. The soft lighting, the cat, there’s steam rising from the kettle and snow is falling on a gray day. Makes me happy. Thank you for getting these victims stories out there. Every one of them needs to be remembered. 💜

what??!! these stories have less than nothing to do with "remembering the victim". This channel as well as many others like this use the misfortune of others to profit, and you and I watching contribute to that, it may not be what you want to believe to make you feel better but that is the fact.
