@7:07 The first thing I said to my spouse when the film ended was, "I think Jonathan Bailey would have chemistry with a doorknob." (Not to compare any of his excellent co-stars to doorknobs, it's more so that every time I see him in something, I think he is made for that role opposite that person!)
To be honest, Fiyero isn’t very present in the musical, either, so I wasn’t expecting him to be in Part 1 as much because I know the plot. That being said, I really hope he has more screen time in Part 2. I am a bit worried that they’ll change it significantly because of the rating, but the 2nd act of the musical is steamy and dramatic so if they keep the PG rating we won’t see that.
I also hope it's very successful! I love a movie musical and I remember being so disappointed for everyone invovled when "In The Heights" did not succeed commercially.
In The Heights suffered bad timing when the cinemas all had to close (which was the right choice, for safety) and then WB made a deal where all their films for 2021 would be simultaneously released on HBO Max because it wasn’t clear how much or how little the cinemas would even be open for films to play. (Also, different states had different procedures so it was impossible to fully know what the numbers would be but they couldn’t just sit on a year’s worth of films either).
Fun fact: I'm the top comment in the "What Is This Feeling" clip! I am in love with the choreo. I agree with you that the costumes and lighting needed to be turned up to 11, but I still want to see this movie in theaters rather than streaming. Wish me luck!
You can completely hear that it's his voice in the song when watching the film, but the most casual moviegoers might still miss it. The people who don't go look up trivia about movie, don't stream soundtracks, don't spend an inordinate amount of time on social media, etc. 😂
Me, listening to your breakdown of what's happening narratively during 'Defying Gravity': The Master's tools will never dismantle the Master's house (Audre Lorde)
I did try to read the book which was witty, but also too dark and confusing. Thus I prefer the musical to the book. It’s the nostalgia, it brings me back to back to my teen years! Ps: don’t get me wrong I love books that makes me think like Jane Eyre and The Hunger Games. However musical are my first love! When I was little I couldn’t talk much, so learning words in a song or a movie really me helped me.
I think the only thing I didn’t like was not showing Boq’s friendship with Elphaba from the book. Elphaba had to tell him to be careful with his feelings for Galinda due to her not feeling the same. And it makes those scenes where he is not laughing at Elphaba more poignant and make her betrayal in Act 2 hit so much harder. But do feel Fiyero was a bigger influence and character in the book and do feel their relationship should have been highlighted more.
@ 😂😂😂😂😂 Yeah, it makes me feel less bad that he is the Tin man now, but adds to the stakes and no good deed. Whether we like him or hate him, he did play a big role in the book so it feels odd to make him such a minor character in the play and film.
The Krampus castle in Red One was also FULL of other creatures in special effects makeup, that is absolutely the way to go when you want the world to feel tangible. Unless you’re going to spend as much time and money as James Cameron’s Avatar films, PUT THE MAKEUP (and body suits) ON. 👹 I need to see the precise nuance and details of what’s being emoted by the actor. 🔥
So I didn't honestly notice the lighting and color grading to the degree you did in this one. I went in with zero expectation and more interested in the vocals/acting than anything else. I too never took the time to watch the stage production of Wicked, so went in with nothing on the brain. At first when people started commenting on the lighting I was concerned for their theaters not checking their projector lamps properly. I had watched the whole movie in our auditorium that's projector is calibrated with more lumens so that whatever is playing on that screen is already more vibrant than in one of the other auditoriums. But after having done more theater(auditorium) checks, with the knowledge that there were lighting/grading issues I did pick up on it more. Especially with regards to capturing the wardrobe of the characters after having watched some of the bts. THAT was when I really picked up on the color translation being slightly muted from set to screen. The pinks weren't popping as they truly should have. I also love that your reviews will ALWAYS have a more in depth look at how social issues that are portrayed within the media. As you are actually looking at this as an adaptation of the original source material rather than just an adaptation of a stage musical it adds a perspective that isn't really being talked about much with other reviews. As I had also seen Red One prior to watching Wicked, in the same auditorium, I also think that the production could have benefited from a more Guillermo del Toro style of special FX make-up/creature design. (he's personally a top 3 director for me because of his creature/set design choices) Because not only are all the Animal characters played by actors in the stage musical(I looked up stills from stage productions), but in the original Wizard of OZ the Cowardly Lion is of course played by a man in a lion suit and make-up. The scene with the Lion cub in the classroom could have been that much more affective if we, as an audience, were seeing a mute child rather than a mute lion cub in a cage. I always care more about the fate of animals on screen than human characters, but because the Animals were computer generated I did feel a bit of an emotional disconnect that normally isn't present. As someone with knowledge of the numbers Wicked is currently doing within just my own company...It's safe to say that it is a success. While not exactly Barbie numbers(as Barenheimer was a whole thing of it's own with a larger demo seeing it because of the double feature aspect of that phenomenon) is is doing very well. Releasing the week before Thanksgiving instead of Thanksgiving midweek can also skew attendance numbers as more people are actively traveling for Thanksgiving. It's killing Gladiator II and Bonhoneffer in attendance. With Moana 2 coming out tomorrow we will see if Wicked can retain attendance for the average movie goers. Haven't had a chance to watch Gladiator yet as I'm not getting done with work until around 2-3AM most nights. But that's what's next on my TBW list.
I can't speak on what everyone's perspectives are that leads to their complaints about the colour grading and lighting. My complaints are highly influenced from the fact that: 1) I grew up watching classic MGM musicals that were from that Technicolor era (with all the saturated colours and bright lighting), and it's clear that this film is trying to appeal to the audience in the ways that those films did. 2) The Wizard of Oz (1939) IS a Technicolor film, the way that it's lit and the colours pop are part of the iconic imagery, and there is no way to release a Wicked film without thinking about that since it's one of the most famous Hollywood films of all time (and they're more or less set in the same place using many of the same characters) 3) Wicked is being gifted with an ENORMOUS budget compared to what most movie musicals are given nowadays so I will have higher expectations (D*cks: The Musical had $8M, Mean Girls 2024 $36M, and In The Heights $55M compared to Wicked 2024's $150M ~ Hell, even Mamma Mia which is like THE GOLDEN CHILD of modern-ish movie musicals only had $52M which is roughly $76M when adjusted for inflation). In conclusion for that talking point, FIX THE COLOURS AND THE LIGHTING, your budget says you can afford it. 😂 And people who are saying it's fine for the Animal characters to look like animals are completely missing the point which is that the Animals are an allegory for fascism against marginalised groups IN REAL LIFE (ethnicity, sexuality, religion, etc.), the Animals rights of the film are not an allegory for animal rights in real life. (This is also where reading the book comes in handy because 'Animals' and 'animals' don't mean the same thing). 😆
Minor spoilers: Can I say one thing that I felt was a book nod in a thematic way was how Nessa is treated compared to Elphaba and her disability. I like how even though Nessa has a disability, people gravitate towards her because she fits their physical (outside of the wheelchair) standards versus Elphaba who is Edit: green. But book wise, more of a person of color than other characters. I also liked the touch of how that one faculty member dismissed Elphaba advocating for Nessa and Nessa’s pleas to stop “man handling” her in a way. People with disabilities struggle with advocating for themselves or struggle being listened to. And at the same time, it created this shift from loving Elphaba to starting to resent her for ruining her first day at Shiz. I felt this showed some of the thematic elements from the book too.
@ you’re right. I was blending my thoughts from the book, which highlights that theme more. The book showed how not only how the father treated Nessa as the most precious and beautiful thing in the world, but Glinda and society did as well even with her disability. So I felt even though Nessa and Elphaba are both black in the film, you still have Glinda saying, “look at the pitifully beautiful girl. The one in the chair”, showing that she does meet some of Glinda’s standard of beauty and Elphaba, with her green skin is even more of an outcast. I think the play and film should have showed that more, but Maguire’s book was hefty and filled with many themes that took a lot of time to expand on.
Two things: From everything I've heard, most people actually prefer the musical to the book. They find the book too dark and confusing. And I always interpreted Glinda staying in the musical as her deciding to try to affect change from within (not book Glinda, she's just a menace).
