How to Sew a Blanket or Quilt with Two Sheets and Some Batting

  • Using two store-bought twin sheets and some batting, we'll make a simple blanket. Total project time: 2-3 hours. Cost: Under $20. If you liked this video click the like button! Have a question or comment? Let me know!
    PS - An alternate method that is probably easier is to sew the two sheets and the batting together rather than stuffing the batting in afterward. The batting actually goes through the sewing machine pretty easily when it's on the top.

    This is an old post, but people still watching.. so I want to help out. The correct method, (and easier method) is put the batting down first, then the two sheets (right sides together) on top of the batting, then sew all 3 layers at one time the same as you did with the two layers. Then when you turn it rightside out the batting is already attached and is already inside in one step. In other words the batting starts out on the outside, then you sew all three around the edge with a straight stitch and turn it.. the batting is now inside and pretty sides of the sheets are out now. Adding the batting after sewing the two sheets is frankly insane. You would then proceed, as you did. Straighten, pin in intervals, and sew lines. You can make straight lines using masking tape. Lay out a yard stick or ruler however far away from the edge, stick masking tape down on that measurement.. move the yard stick, add tape.. move the yard stick to the next row, measure, stick down. Once all taped in "stripes", then sew along the outside of the tape, do NOT sew ON the tape .. sew next to it for a guide. Sew on both sides of the tape... then go to the next tape stripe and repeat. If you want then to sew crossways.. remove the tape and do it again ACROSS the blanket at what ever interval.. and boom.. done. This completes puts the batting inside in one step, and provides guides to sew straight seams. You can do this is any size, for smaller, cut the fabric smaller than the sheet, for bigger, use bigger sheets, or even sew two sheets together to make a larger size. You can use any type of batting, poly low loft, high loft or a cotton quilt batting, or even a piece of flannel inside.. or use two flannel sheets. Happy sewing! Hope this helps you all save steps and fun tape grid designs! Thanks Nils, fun vid, and what a sweet hubs to make one for his wife!

    I've been making these for at least 31 years, in all sizes. it is easier to sew the batting onto the rectangles of fabric at the same time you sew them together. these can also be made with any loft of batting, the fluffy deep batting makes this a custom comforter.

    Two suggestions: Using an old or thrift store blanket in the middle (in place of the batting - but not a strong color if you can see through the fabric), and using a chalk line to mark the lines for quilting. I love using my spouse's chalk line for cutting large pieces as well.

    This is my absolute favorite kind of blanket. The one my grandmother made for me is falling apart so I am making a new one and its my first time. My current blanket is 25 years old and it's been everywhere with me. The way I like the blanket to be stitched to hold everything in place is with yarn knots like you would use on a quilt. It adds a pretty touch to the blanket and thats the way grandma made them. It's very easy to do with a darning needle and a quilt frame. I prefer the knots to be approximately 6 inches apart, but even 12 inches is ok. Thank you for the video! I love this family tradition blanket.

    Jane, in this case I sewed just the sheets together (inside out) and then turned them right side out and put the batting in. If I were to do it again, I would put the batting on top of the sheets and sew it all together, THEN flip it right side out.

    Hi Marino, I put the whole section of batting into the opening (rolled up, then I had to kind of maneuver the batting around inside the blanket to unroll it and get it to go into the corners and such. It's kind of a pain but it works out. The alternate method I mention in the descriptions would make the process much easier. Good luck!

  • @LRN2DIY

    Hi there, It's definitely best to stich the batting in the middle too. In the video, right around 3:00 you can see where I stitch rows down the quilt. As for stitching the opening shut, yes it ends up being a bit different than the rest of the edges. I think if you do a tight stitching pattern and make the pattern straight instead of zigzag, being sure to stay near the very edge of the blanket, it won't be too noticeable. Good luck!

    I like the idea of you doing a such a basic tutorial, however, you skipped SO MUCH, that new sewers, won't understand 'how to' make this item.
    Perhaps you should redo this one, and actually show HOW you got the backing in, how many lines you sewed in the body of the blanket, how many inches apart the lines are etc.
    Not for me, as I am a seasoned sewer, but for a new sewer that needs to learn.
    I see by the comments, you just didn't show the steps....
    Love the blanket though...

    Thanks for posting this video. My 3yo son's been using my baby blanket that my mom made me when I was a baby, and even though it's holding up well against all the abuse I put it through, it is thin in some areas, the batting has come apart (you can tell by feeling the blanket), and it has one hole in it from getting caught in the stroller wheel. Needless to say, I plan on sewing a new one for him, and hoping he'll take to it. I'm new to sewing, and want to use batting in it, but it's left me a little puzzled as to what is the best way to approach it. I think I'll be trying your method, especially with sewing lines throughout the blanket. It seems by doing that it may keep the batting in place for the long run. Again, thank you for posting your video as seeing what you did helps out a lot.

    I'm no expert at this but I know that the batting comes in various thicknesses so you can probably just buy some heavier batting and use that. My wife says you may need a quilting foot (they're $10 on Amazon) on your machine to do the thicker material. I have no experience with that, though. Several years ago we tied a quilt, with yarn every 6 inches or so, so that's always an option too. Good luck!

Instead of sewing straight down the middle to keep the batting in place, can I just sew several stitches and space them like they do on a down comforter? Mark Pyles if you sew the batting directly to the sheet while its inside out it works like a charm. so put both sheets like you normally would then place the batting on whatever side you want sew and turn right side out and your batting is already attached. :D

  • @stevehunt953

    Hi...just a question, why did you use a zigzag stitch? Why not a straight? Also, can't the batting be added along with the two sheets in the beginning? That way when you turn it right side out, the batting will be already sewn in! Right?

    • @LRN2DIY
      @LRN2DIY  9 років тому +2

      Hey Steve, great questions. My thought on the zigzag was that it would cover a bit more ground and hopefully hold up better, though I don't have enough experience to know if that's the best way. I do know that almost two years later the blanket is holding up nicely (my wife uses that blanket all the time). As for the batting being sewn in, I think that's a great idea. I was a bit afraid of trying to sew the batting in, thinking it'd get caught in the foot of the machine but maybe next time I'll give it a try!

      Hi Rosy, I assume you're talking about my other video about adjusting your hook timing, right? If so, yes - you do need to tighten it up again. If not, it will not even spin the carriage and bobbin. There's a bit of luck involved so keep trying and hopefully you'll get it in just the right position. Good luck!

    Why not use a walking foot? Was sad not to see how you sewed the batting on 😉

    You didn't tell me how to get batting in?

    How do you sew the remaining opening after you do everything that your video shows?

    • @LRN2DIY
      @LRN2DIY  8 років тому

      +RoflMcCopter You can either hand sew it or use the machine, but either way it won't be exactly the same as the rest. That's why its best to leave as small an opening as you can while still being able to fit the batting in.

      +RoflMcCopter I just remembered that I show the opening being sewn shut at 3:14.

    Why did you not show how you put the batting inside this? You missed a lot of important steps. Why???

    I think I missed something! How did the batting go in? This seems to be missing a lot, for anyone wanting to learn how to do this. If a person already knows how, they wouldn’t need to watch this lol!

      I apparently didn't show the batting going in but after sewing the two sheets together and turning it right side out, I put the batting in.
