    I love this tutorial. I bought some fabric like this a few years ago to make a few blankets and they are still sitting in the bag from JoAnn’s. Now I can finish those and get them sold. Any sewing tutorial is ALWAYS welcome. I know I’ll use the information provided in them.

    All the while I was watching this, I was thinking wouldn’t it be neat to have a matching tumbler and blanket using the same patterned fabric and I should have known you were going to say that at the end ☺️

    Thanks for sharing, I have started back sewing again and this will help me get back to it! I too started when I was young. They don’t make the sewing machines like they use to. The new ones have lots of features but the oldie but goodie ones lasted and let you sew heavier fabricates.

      Gosh I know! When I was in 8th grade, the cool thing was to make purses and bags out of koolaid packs 😂 you best bet my other machine sewn through pack after pack and didn’t skip a beat and continued on until last year when it said I’m done. It had a lot of functions but very simple to use and would see ANYTHING.

I also appreciate the info on the different sized items and suggested selling prices. Can you tell us how much fabric to buy for each? Thanks for all of your wonderful knowledge. 💗

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much! The best way to determine how much fabric you need is look at the sizes you want to make your blanket and the size of 1 yard on the fabric bolt (the end I showed in the tutorial) most minky/poly fabric is 60” X 36” for a yard so for a child size and under you would just need a yard. Infant blanket one yard of cotton and child size one and a half yards. I get a little extra for accessories.

    Do you just make kids and infant blankets or have adults asked you for bigger sized blankets?

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  2 роки тому +2

      Mainly kids and babies, other things for them. The child size is a great lap blanket for elderly and small adults. I HAVE made adult sizes but have to order custom fabric from spoonflower to get the width and they are definitely pricey.

    Thank you so much for this video, it is exactly what I needed to help me with my current project.
    Question: in your experience, do you think a larger size blanket (i.e. a twin size) should have any filling? Batting? (I’m so sorry, I’m brand new to sewing and this is going to be my first big project and I can’t remember what it’s called)
    I’m going to be making a sized up version of my son’s favorite blanket now that he’s in a twin sized bed. I couldn’t find the exact same minky, but I found a similar one or at least one with moons and stars theme which is what his current one is. I was planning to make the minky the top and the cotton the bottom. His current one has a minky top and a faux Sherpa backing (that long ago lost all of its softness lol which is why I’m going with a cotton this time). I just worry that it’ll be too thin as a twin size blanket. Would love to get an expert opinion.
    Either way thank you again for such a detailed tutorial including washing the cotton beforehand, I had not thought of that and I’m so glad you brought it up because I can absolutely see how it would shrink and make the blanket super uneven.

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  4 місяці тому +1

      HI!!! so sorry for the delayed response. I have never found any reason to add batting in these as long as some sort of minky fabric was used for the back. They are all super warm and loved for many years by the little customers of mine.

    Would you wash flannel? And is there cotton you used quilting cotton?

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  6 днів тому +1

      O yes. flannel shrinks a bit too. anything that will shrink, prewash it. It wasnt specified as quilting cotton in store. Just "cotton". I have used the same for quilts before.

    I have a question so I have a quilted blanket and I had it for who knows how long but it has some holes and I’m trying to sew it like hand sew it and some of the holes have like loose fabric and then like thin stuffing in it do I just cut those loose parts so I can sew it better?

    If I wanted to do this for an adult and do an adult size blanket, do you have yardage recommendations? Probably double this size?

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  Місяць тому

      i usually get two yards of fabric and make 36" x 72" (raw material) minus 2" around after stitching. Its always been a great hit for adult sizing

    Discovered that a newer agitator type washing machine does not really have hot water (thank environmentalists). It mixes cold with hot and if you have an on-demand hot water heater, you won’t even get warm water. You can fill the tub with a hose from an sink next to the washer, if you have one, with hot water and let the fabric sit for 5 minutes to shrink and then wash.

      I use teo yards of fabric for an adult blanket. roughly 36" x 72" would be your cut size. give or take two inches depending on the fabric

    I have 100% printed cotton fabric. (not suitable for children's j's according to the label) I am new to sewing and want to make a simple throw for my adult daughter, I have 3 yards, 44/45 inches. can I add a layer of cotton batting for warmth? what would be a nice backing piece? Minky? what measurements to use 2 yards ?

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  Місяць тому

      You absolutely can! I would cut 36" (wider if you can) x 72". you can add batting in the middle, however using minky is usually sufficient for warmth. Its the most amazing feeling fabric! If you add batting, you would want to sew as a "quilt" rather than blanket that you turn right side out. I would suggest watching a simple quilt tutorial as you would need senter stiching as well to hold the batting in place :)

    • @brittanybarnesboutique

      It sure does! I have made xl ones for adults and twin size. You just have to have a large area to pin so everything is flat before sewing so it does not twist up on you

    11:23 would there be anyway to hide the stitches that go in the hole that you left without having to stitch the whole way round? I use my crochet blankets on one side but they are too thick for the machine so I have to hand sew and it’s difficult to get the straight line for the whole border

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  2 місяці тому

      yes, you can hand cross stitch on the inner edge of the hole and hide them :)

    non-profits in my area in need of blankets and kid's clothing ranging from newborn to young adult.

    • @brittanybarnesboutique
      @brittanybarnesboutique  8 місяців тому

      I do not know of any sewing groups but I have made quite for quilts for kids . Com before. They send you the fabric and you sew and mail in the finished quilts. It cost me roughly $25 per blanket but it was an awesome feeling getting a mailer that my quilt had been gifted to a sick child and it made them smile.

    Slither? A slither is a snake movement. You are talking about a slight skinny piece of fabric called a sliver. No slithers here. Lol another woman from ENGLAND called it a slither too. Just look it up online or in a dictionary. Sorry I just do not want people laughing and making fun of you behind your back. It's just wrong. So again a sliver is a small piece of anything, not just fabric. And slither is a wiggly slow movement such as a snake makes. Love your work and I think it's great you make so many baby blankys.hugs and much love.
