Guys, Ygritte wouldn’t shoot Jon again. She had so much time to do it. And she wouldn’t and didn’t. She is lethal with bow and arrow and she chose to just wound him when he left her the way she felt wounded when he abandoned her. She loved him.

@@ce666isa3 I don't think they remember how far north the Wall is from Winterfell, nevermind Kings Landing. And they forgot that someone from the Watch went south with the still-moving-hand of the wight killed while attacking Commander Jeor Mormont and it took so long to gain an audience with the King that the hand no longer moved, so they didn't believe him.

@@bereasonable8018 Basically they forgot how the Nights Watch works, the stakes of this fight, the geography of the North, the laws that govern the North, the instances in the show where the NW isn't taken seriously by the southern lords, who Janos is, who Ygritte is as a character, the distrust the wildlings have for the crows and vice versa, and pretty much everything else that adds context to this episode. Pretty disappointed in this one, usually their reactions are great but this was painful to listen to at some points 🤦🏻‍♀️

Guys, Jon left Ygritte! She wanted to leave with him and he abandoned her because of his sense of duty. She had every reason to be heartbroken and angry. Mike, did you forget the very beginning of S1E1 when the Nights Watch man fled the Wall in fear because of his encounter with the wights? Ned Stark beheaded him for being dishonorable. He didn't send men to investigate and help protect the Wall. The people of this realm were obsessed with honor and keeping one's oath. The Nights Watch were oathbound to defend the Wall with their lives to protect the realm. You think if the few remaining men from NW were to flee (leaving the Wall completely undefended), then anyone at all from the Seven Kingdoms would help them? This act would be equal to opening the gates and letting in the wildlings.

I love how they bait you in to the "Ygritte will save Jon" trope only to subvert it by having Jon kill the Thenn himself using Karl Tanner's blood spitting tactic from earlier in the season. It's like that one time when Jaime made his very predictable escape only to be caught 5 mins later. How about that "I won't die" goodbye kiss from Sam to Gillie before the battle? And then he really lives. These little tweaks is what makes the episode even better than it already is. The moral gray area of making Olly the one to kill Ygritte is a stroke of genius! They can't leave the wall, fight to the last is the oath, anyone that leaves is a deserter and will be executed regardless of the reason ergo the 1st episode. Ygritte's death sucked too, she was a cool character and it did bring a deeper level of emotional depth, "we should have stayed together in that cave" is a real tear-jerker moment and a warrior of her caliber and grit getting taken out by a kid because she just couldn't kill Jon, heavy. This was an epic battle for certain yet there are some battles to come that eclipse damn near any battle scenes from any films ever produced, this show picks up speed from here and doesn't let up, love hanging with you guys for this, cheers!

"The watchers on the wall" I love this episode epically directed by Neil Marshall who also did Season 2 episode 9 "Blackwater" this has everything great setup, great score and fantastic action from Pyp dying in Sam's arms to Ser Alliser fighting like a beast and still wanting to keep going even when he's being dragged of injured credit where credits due (still a dickhead) compare him to Janos Slynt hiding away with Gilly and the baby Jon takes over and shows everyone what Lord Commander Jeor Mormont saw in him his ability to lead slicing and dicing from the front and then having ygritte die in his arms killed by Olly was absolutely heartbreaking, and finally Jon trusted his friend Grenn to hold the gate both knew it was most likely a death sentence but Grenn saw the other men panicking and when one was about to run from the giant he grabbed him and started to recite the Nights Watch vows to get them all psyched up to fight and when Jon and Sam are going through the tunnel to the outer gate they come across the bodies of all five Brothers but Grenn kept his promise to Jon he held the gate because the body of the giant lies next to him a brilliant episode from start to finish!!

It’s funny that you mention Narnia and Lord of the Rings.
Historically speaking, C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were great friends growing up, often crediting each other for their own great works.
George R. R. Martin has also been quoted as stating much of his inspiration, aside from world history, is from Tolkien. In fact, he specifically states that while many get mad at him for killing our beloved characters in #GoT, the blame should really be shifted to Tolkien and the death of Gandalf the Grey.

Btw the wall still EXISTS; it's not gone. Only one lost battle at the castle black is definitely not enough of a reason to abandon the wall. And even if they left, it would be months until they would reach Kings Landing, so no help could've come on time anyways. Jon did the only thing he could have done. Otherwise they would attack again and again, until the whole Nights watch would be gone. It's a long shot but still a shot. Another battle was not an option.

I know this video is a few weeks old but Ygritte loved Jon . When Jon ended up killing the warg Ygritte was gonna fight her own people to be with Jon and Jon knew that so he purposely pushed her and tormund held her back to stop her from leaving . Jon made the choice for her to stay with her people and him with his but they still loved each other

My dudes, Ygritte had a million chances to shoot John dead, she didn't and she wouldn't, she loved him. She shot him before not to kill but just to hurt him, because he broke her heart by leaving her.
The other thing, a brother of the Night's Watch can't leave the wall under any circumstances, if he does he is a deserter. And in the south, no one cares about the wall and the wildling threat because it's too far away from them, they wouldn't care anyway. The only one who may have helped them is the Warden of the North if he was dutiful and honorable like Ned, but now it's Roose Bolton and he don't give a f*ck too. So, they are pretty much on their own. There is no good way out for them.

No way Ygritte would have ran. Wildings don’t do that. Jon lied and said he was with her until the truth came up. She could’ve killed him but let him get away bc she was in love with him. During the battle she wasn’t going to shoot. They were in love but on opposite sides 😭

"He was so down to leave with her" Actually no it was the complete opposite. Ygritte was the one who asked Jon to be loyal to only her and leave with her. Jon LEFT HER to go back to the wall because he chose his duty. Why shouldn't then she choose her duty and her people? She didn't even wanna kill him. If she did, he would be dead.
This turned me off, man. At least don't call her a b*tch while she's dying. Y'all did the same with Lord Commander Mormont's death.

My favorite episode 9 hasn’t happened yet, but out of these first four seasons, it’s the Red Wedding.
I’m curious how long it takes to get up and down the wall using that rackety ass elevator.
I understand being pissed with Ygritte, but the thing is Jon broke her heart first. She knew that he wasn’t loyal to the wildlings and she loved him anyway. She thought they could abandon both of their groups and just be on their own, but Jon crushed that dream. She even started fighting for his side and he pushed her away (literally) and rode off without her. She would’ve given up everything for him, and to see that he wouldn’t do the same is painful.
Goes to show, I’m definitely not over Ygritte. I loved her character.
Also, there’s absolutely no way Jon or Ygritte could go to Winterfell. Let’s say they get lucky enough to make it that far: they’d have to deal with the Bolton’s who hold Winterfell.
“I know you never fucked a bear.” That’s one of my favorite lines of the entire show because what the fuck lmao.
Maester Aemond talking about his lover 🥺
Aaron started crying sooner in the episode than I thought haha. I don’t blame you though!
Sam is absolutely amazing this episode. He’s brave and he’s romantic. That’s a beautiful combo.
I have strange respect for Alliser in this episode. He’s not a coward that’s all talk, so you have to give him that. He’s still frustrating though.
I get tears in my eyes because of how epic this episode is. That guy getting launched through the sky with a giant arrow is crazy!! Also, that one shot!!
Speaking of tears: those few men that held the gate get me emotional. I knew when they cut away that it was over for them :(
Ygritte’s death is the second death that enraged me. Robb’s was the first and the third one hasn’t happened yet. But just like Robb’s now, when I watch this episode again, I cry like a baby. And the way Jon smiles at seeing her again breaks my heart.
“We should’ve stayed in that cave.” 😭

The cinematography and direction in this episode are absolutely outstanding. The panning across the scene mid-battle is perfectly done.
You can start any episode of GOT and say, "He/she is going to die", and you've got a good chance of getting it right at some point.

32:04 and this is when I start crying. The most important job of those men's lives right there was to hold the gate. They were about to turn around and run. That is why Gren started reciting their vows so that they would remember why they were there

Yay! I was jonesing for another bust video & also for you guys to see this episode battle in particular. Your reaction videos are the best thing on UA-cam ❤
This has to be my fav battle/episode 9 of the entire series because the battle is so well choreographed, the camera work and the set builds are AMAZING and it all comes together to make, IMO, one of the best filmed battles of all time.
I always get choked up when I see Grenn & the boys saying their Nights Watch vows to embolden themselves while the giant (Mag the Mighty) came barreling at them
But the most BADASS part is at 32:50 when Jon is coming down from the wall to join the fighting on the ground and, after he gives Sam the key to release Ghost, he jumps a good 15 feet from the still moving lift so that he can reach the ground first and clear the platform so Sam and the other men can exit the lift without being overrun.
Not only does it show how good a fighter Jon is and that he is willing to sacrifice himself for the safety of others but the sequence that follows is so freaking cool to watch, no matter how many times I see it it still gives me goosebumps.

Leaving the wall isn't an option as many have said but remember also - the rest of Westeros, King's Landing especially - don't even believe in these walkers, giants, creatures, etc. They've never seen any of it and have little to no respect for the people at the wall to begin with. Only because they have no clue what's happening there. Jon legit did the only thing possible to try and broker peace even though he knows he'll prob die.

  • @thelredtheunready8699

We spend all this time feeling bad for Olly only for him to break Jon's heart, came equipped with that smug head nod. You don't want Ygritte to die, but you can't really take your frustration out on the boy killing her either. You know what happened to his family. That's the beauty of the ethical quandry. Take Ser Alliser for instance. All this time we want him to go away, just die, but then during the battle he rallies the troops with an inspiring speech and shows exemplary courage. The Night's Watch successfully repelled the attack but we're still left with a lingering sadness seeing Jon. There's no clean desensitized 'Team Good Guy Wins'. It's a recurring theme.

The Night's Watch has been writing notes to any big house and King's Landing in hopes that they would send more men. Nobody sent more men, aside from that dude that was working for the Boltons.
The only real plan if they were to try another defense is to seal the tunnel this time. But, as you guys already see in the next episode, Mance tells them that they've already sent a band over the wall at another spot where there was no defense, so they would have their front gate vulnerable again.
