  • With the help of Rusty Wrecks I understand why my engine felt so awful when I revved it up, and we fix that then make progress on lots of little tasks.

    Hi Ryan. I’m building the same type of engine at the moment. I had to strip it down again. I’d got to the piston fitting stage, but never fitted the cam chain tensioner. I had fitted the crank, the balance gears and chain, oil pump, clutch, gear selector and stator plus flywheel. I’d also had a problem with the lower half of the crankcase, which had stripped threads. I had to dill out the stripped thread, file a nut down, press it into the crankcase, then using aluminium paste, set it into the casing. After stripping everything back down to the crank shaft, I’ve got it back to the piston stage, in fact I’m going to fit the head after I fit the valves. I had a little smile after you’d dropped a head bolt washer on episode 18, thinking I’d done that also. You see I’d bought this bike off eBay from a great guy in Colchester who ran the bike with another engine whilst he rebuilt the original which was totally stripped and everything was in marked brown paper bags. It has been complete so far except the clutch basket thrust washer. Sorry for droning on. But the counter balance shaft/gear set up is something that I can do in my sleep as I’ve done it so many times now. Great videos , keep them coming.

      Thanks Steven, I'd glad you can relate to my challenges. It seems funny that when I look back on what I've done since beginning this build I now have some confidence in certain areas, but still realise there is so much more to learn. Best of luck with your own build. Ryan,

    I had a noise on my 1980 GS550, which howled like a dry bearing, and varied with road speed. I tracked it down to the speedo cable, which had been allowed to rust internally. After several goes at pulling the inner cable out, cleaning and regreasing it and flushing the outer through with WD40, it has now been working silently for over a year.

      Thanks Rick, im not 100% sure what was causing the sequel, but it seems okay for now following my oiling. Although ive been advised that may not have been very wise. Time will tell.

    nice one Pete for spotting that issue with the counterweights - Pete really does deserve more than 87 subscribers. come on people! I wouldn't have had a clue either Ryan.

      I agree, without Pete's knowledgeable eyes, that would have taken me a whole load more time to diagnose.

    Ryan block off the cable hole with a bit of tissue and lube the outside of the rotating part with lithium grease and or silicon. John🇬🇧👍

    I use “gunson colortune” for fuel air mixture tuning Ryan seems to work for me 👍🏻👍🏻🏍🏍

      @RyansGarageUK  Рік тому

      Hi, I tried to find this colortune product, and I did manage to find it, but not in a size that would fit this bike. Each kit I found was for a very specific sparkplug size, and each one was fairly expensive. Thank you for the suggestion, if I could get hold of one I would certainly be keen to try it.

    Hi, the speedo and tacho are magnetic. Both are driven by a magnet connected to the cable the needle is pulled around by the magnetic field of the rotating magnet. A spring returns the needle to the zero stop pin. The clearance between the needle and magnet is minimal. If grease or oil get into that clearance both needles will wind right round to maximum readings. Therefore it is unwise to oil the instrument' The cables should not be greased or oiled in the 12 inches leading to the instrument for the same reason. The very blueing of the exhaust pipes would indicate overheating, perhaps caused by a lean mixture from the carbs. Chris. B.

      Hi Chris, thank you for your feedback. You make very good points that i hadn't fully considered. I did only spay a small quantity of light oil into the instruments and they are working fine for now and gravity is on my side to help prevent it working further into the mechanism. But ill certainly bare in mind your input.. Ryan

    If you have split the cases, why not check the rod and crank bearings, and get the crack welded up? Balancer and cam chain need to be changed at the same time.

    • @RyansGarageUK
      @RyansGarageUK  Рік тому

      Hi, This is not the same engine that has the crack in it's case, this is the engine I am planning to use for the next build, and we did check for wear on the bearings whilst it was apart, and we didn't change the balancers or cam chain, just checked and realigned it all.

    • @humourless682
      @humourless682 Рік тому

      @@RyansGarageUK Ok. Its crazy not to change the chains though. Good chance they will be noisy when you get it running again.

      @@humourless682 I checked the chains and they still have plenty of life left in them

      @@RustyWrecks Good to hear the 50 year old chains are still in good order. I used to work on Superdreams when they were new, and in many cases the chains were noisy after less than a couple of years.

    Are there any diagrams for the balancer weight alignments available?

    • @RyansGarageUK
      @RyansGarageUK  Рік тому

      Hi, ive not seen any diagrams, but there are photos in the Haynes manual. But the marks are fairly obvious if you have the engine cases split.

    • @neilsmovieshd
      @neilsmovieshd Рік тому +1

      According to Hains it's TH at the rear TC at the front aligned with casing lay the balancers out with chain then fit the bottom end fitting the guide at the same time while at TDC i.e marks on crank unfortunately it wasn't very clear in your video. Thanks for the video the only one I've found on this issue if I hadn't got Hains I would have been stuck.
