Yes, I agree. I meant as far as commentary on screen using text. I should have mentioned that though as I just did a video on the main event a couple of months ago. Good call the
Great video, Patman! I played Tecmo Wrestling a LOT myself! It was fun and challenging, plus I learned a number of moves not seen on the WWF/WCW shows at the time. I also remember the commentator getting frustrated when you avoid locking up for too long! 😄 Thanks for all you do for this channel! ☝️
In North America, this game had no rival. It was the spiritual successor to the old Pro Wrestling and no game came close. I agree, it wasn't until North Americans had fire Pro on the PS2. I have been playing Import copies on the super Famicom since the very beginning. A friend of mine who actually did one of the early English translation patch for fire Pro also did a ring management on the series had extensive back stories for each character LOL
Patman! This is amazing! I am in awe by the fact that you are able to connect the fictional characters to the real wrestlers! I really love the “after these messages” bit too! Great video!

Best wrestling game on the NES. My friend and I used to play this for HOURS back in ‘90. If WWF WrestleMania Challenge (another game we truly loved because we were both religious wrestling fanatics) had this game’s engine and gameplay……
That Tecmo theater mode cutscene cinematics are cool to see during the games. I actually wish the newer WWE games featured more of that. In that Tecmo cartoon commercial, I see Hulk Hogan. Thanks for going over each of the wrestlers to confirm the likenesses. That masked villain would be tough to defeat. Thanks Patman!
Best wrestling game on the NES. Just a note on the button mashing: the game is designed so that turbo controllers won’t work, but there’s a way around that. I used my NES Advantage, which had adjustable turbo, so during the training segments I would turn down the turbo until the game would accept the input. I’d end up with a bunch of the circles filled, and the turbo was then perfectly tuned to pull off moves during matches as well. Also much easier on the thumbs :)
I never used one back in the day so I didn't know that. However, playing under emulation I definitely had to use auto fire otherwise I wouldn't have made it very far
wow fantastic job as always! i love the the way you looked at the other Tecmo sports titles to set up the wrestling game. I had this has a kid and could only do the workouts with a NES game pad that had a turbo mode!!!
I had this Nintendo game World Wrestling I play this on my retro fives it takes awhile to get used to for me I'm used to playing pro wrestling Nintendo
I've been playing a lot of classic wrestling games I do need to get back into World Wrestling. Mostly playing pro wrestling Saturday night slam Masters and wrestling War
Having sold off my NES and most of my collection in 2011 (huge mistake), I now have only three of my original NES carts from childhood, and TECMO Super Bowl is one of them! I have never been very good at it, but as a passionate wrestling fan I have to appreciate all of this great depth. It's the only 8-bit wrestling game with alternate pins like the bridging German suplex or the power bomb where you hold on. It's one of only 2 NES wrestling games with submissions, including some holds we really weren't seeing in the states at the time, at least not on TV, like the octopus stretch. The music is strong, adding some emotional depth to the experience.
I remember my dad coming home with this game for me as a surprise when I was a kid. I was super into wrestling at the time. Great game, loved it. Really hard though. Luckily at some point I got the nes advantage controller, the 'turbo' mode made it very easy so I could finally see the ending. I'd go as far as to say that without some sort of turbo controller, this game would be nigh on impossible to beat.
I bought Tecno world wrestling a few months before WWF wrestlemania challenge came out, I couldn't believe the high quality of this game compared to the WWF / WWE game. It's such a shame they couldn't use licensed wrestlers and shame it didn't have a tag team mode.
The last NES game I bought! ...and this was 92 or so after I was well underway with the SNES! I rarely tired of the good wrestling games, and this one had slipped by....and the NES still had plenty of life left for me! I played this one quite a bit, perhaps until the end of 1993. Looking back, it was the perfect game to go out on for my NES era, ending with Tecmo wrestling, starting of my collection years earlier with "Pro Wrestling." WHAT A RUSH!!!!
Back then I made my own little wrestling magazine type thingamabob to go along with this game. Keeping track of wrestler records, giving them titles, and my own storylines. It was a pain to do the matches for it since it didn't have any exhibition match options, forcing you play through it to get to the match up you wanted. Still a great game, even today. But once I found Fire Pro Wrestling on the SNES, I never really went back to this one. Though I did create all the wrestlers and put them into that one.
A true classic, but by far most enjoyable against a friend. Even using an NES Advantage at max turbo I still struggled to win with any consistency in single player. It's so odd that Tecmo abandoned the genre after what I assume must have been solid success with this game.
I once played this game and something very weird happened that I have not been able to re-create. I was just putzing around beating up my opponent well past the point where I could have pinned him, and from out of nowhere, the commentator says something along the lines of oh no- what is this.. his opponent is not moving... somebody get some help! And just like that, the match was over! I tried multiple times to get it to happen again, but no luck. I know this sounds unbelievable, but I swear this happened.
I think Bass, Tina, & la mariposa (the butterfly) from the doa fighting game series have wresting outfits that say tecmo. This might be a possible reference to this game
Lol, I just realized Superman and another character sitting to his left and right a few rows over are in the crowd for Mat Mania. 😄 Wrestling games I played on the nes back in the day were Pro Wrestling, MUSCLE Wrestling, Tag Team Wrestling and Wrestlemania and eventually Tecmo World Wrestling. I never did friend the WCW game but my friend did have it. really miss those early gaming days since I'm getting older now.
Until the 16-bit WWF Royal Rumble/Raw games came out, this was the wrestling game that I played the most with friends and family. Absurdly fun in two player mode.
This was my favorite game for so long when I was a kid. I was so good that it took my sister's boyfriend 3 years to beat me. It happened only once. Looking back, I'm happy for him now, but at the time, it made me so ANGRY. I was never defeated in the tournaments my friends and I would play. I haven't played this game in 32 or 33 years. I still have it. Might be time to start as a rookie again ❤

Other Techmo games with the Action Theater tagline was Captain Tsubasa or Techmo Cup Soccer in USA.
Yes, I learned of this when doing my research. Was not aware of the earlier title
8:34 Poor Krillin. Looks like his wife forced him to make more money in wrestling. 💰
LOL I never noticed
Until the 16-bit WWF Royal Rumble/Raw games came out, this was the wrestling game that I played the most with friends and family. Absurdly fun in two player mode.
Yes it was
This was my favorite game for so long when I was a kid.
My friends were desperate for wrestling games in 96, 97 so in this we would rename the bald guy StonCold. StonCold because there weren't enough letter slots for the 'e' 😂
LOL fantastic
I love this game, thanks for a great video
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks so much
Ricky Steamboat vs Road Warrior Animal on the cover--nice!!
Hey ma, I'm on UA-cam! Such a wonderful surprise and so glad that you were able to do this video!
Thanks my friend
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries You're VERY welcome! Oh and before I forget, congrats on making it on TV holding the W sign for WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO haha Being in the Chicago area, you must have seen and experienced so many great events. I had my fair share here in Philly!
@@johnnygrind77 I'm actually On the other side of the state But we did drive to Chicago a few times just for wrestling. The event in question was a Monday night raw where Ric flair wrestled Goldberg. Thanks again for the donation
@@johnnygrind77 Oh and if you ever look up the Great American bash 97 Ric flair and Piper wrestled the outsidersAnd I was in the front row. You can see me holding up a sign where slick Ric is relieving himself all over Hollywood Hogan. It's at the start of the match LOL
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Now I wanna hear you tell wrestling stories and share my experiences, too haha
great game. my favorite of all time...
Fantastic, hope you enjoyed it
great as always
Thank you! Cheers!
It’s Tecmo Theatre of Wrestling
"Fighter Hayabusa" I could never land the back brain buster....lol.
You old guys know EXACTLY what im talking about.
Super Tecmo Bowl is THE best sports game ever on the NES period. The best part of the game no one mentions is the game kept your season stats. Pass yards, rush yards. I always tried to have at least 1000 rushing yards per the season.
Hey patman. What about NES pro wrestling? Have you done that one? I grew up with that game. The starmans head kick!
I have not done Pro wrestling yet, one of my favorites
6:03 was the way you said "Hayao" a Jim Duggan reference?
Good ears my friend
Thank you Pat for doing another great video. Towards the end of the video you have a picture of all of the wrestlers could I ask where you found it if you could link me in the right direction it would be great.
The original I found off of a Japanese website. Period it was faded and had some kinks which I had to manually remove.
Me and Eddie love your videos 🎉
Thanks Lori
christmas 91 i got this game along with an NES, had many great times with it
1:30
I wish Fire-Pro Wrestling still looked like NES Pro-Wrestling.
Please make a history video about Captain Tsubasa Vol.2 Super Striker, which is also developed by Tecmo. That game is really ahead of its time, best graphic representation and best ost.
