    Chris & Amanda, great video. I picked up a couple of tips from this. I recently (a year ago) got into leather working, and I use a Dremel with the rubber mandrel to smooth out rough edges. I've also found that gum tragacanth works extremely well with it. Hope to see more videos. Cheers, - AJ

    Thanks! I used your tutorial and made 2 beautiful deck boxes. Trial and error to achieve a workable pattern but the rest was just as you demonstrated. I'm lucky to live in Minneapolis as we have 2 Tandy Leather stores here. I had enough veg tanned left over from another project and I made a trip for the hardware and TA DA. Thanks again!

    Greetings from Germany! Nice video! Just one... advice? My sister is a satchelmaker, she uses a halfmoon shaped knife to cut out patterns. I tried it and it is so much easier than using a pair of scissors and it gives you a much cleaner cut than an exactor knife. These knifes maybe are a bit more on the expensive side but they are truely worth it.

    • @CeltWulfe
      @CeltWulfe 5 років тому +1

      Just in case anyone else out in the world is reading this and is curious, the half moon shaped knife is called a round knife or head knife.

    This was actually really neat to watch, and you made it look so easy and accessible to a beginner. I've always admired handmade leather pieces, though I can rarely afford them. There is something distinctive and charming about them. I do a lot of my own sewing and have considered trying to dabble in leather before, but it looked complicated or difficult. It still seems like it takes a fair amount of skill and practice to become competent, but it doesn't feel impossible after watching this.
    A little bit of mood music during the silent parts might be nice, though. I have a really hard time concentrating on just one thing, and it was a struggle to watch those very interesting assembling parts, even though I was fascinated. I guess it is a bit of a weird suggestion, and picking music to please everyone will be impossible, but there's my two cents worth. :)

    just a suggestion if you are making a lot of these and have at least a larger base pattern you like (even better if rivet placement is part of that) you can probably get a local metal shop to make you die to cut from your leather just using a few clamps for pressure at the right points and save your hands a lot of cutting and use less material by putting the shapes closer together

    Love the video! Very informative and helpful. I have one question, just out of curiosity. You say not to put the leather in the oven, does that also apply if your oven has a bread proofing option? Most bread or dough proofers only warm up to 90 or 100 F. (pretty useful if you're baking in a colder climate and worry about your dough rising properly)

    A suggestion, put a couple of drops of dish soap in the water, your leather absorbs the water more completely and bends easier so easy the block of wood is not necessary. I have found this works even when you are moulding your Leather around an object. Questions feel free to contact me. ✝️⚾🙃

    You should also mention that you should make sure that the surface of your leather is free of marks or defects before tracing your pattern. If you find any blemishes on the smooth side of the leather, circle them on the opposite side to avoid placing your pattern there.

    How structually sound would this be if I upscaled it? I imagine this could be made big enough for books (For LARPing, for instance) however I worry about the edges falling apart. As someone with experience in leather, what are your thoughts?

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  7 років тому +2

      marmoolo Leather is super strong and I don't think you'd have any issues of the edges falling apart. The biggest thing is the thickness of the leather. If you want a bag to carry books, you can try using 5 to 7 oz leather. Coming up with a different design on your own would be better as anything that's similar to our pattern would take a ton of leather due to it being all one piece if you're looking for bag size. For a bag with similar styling I would use more rivets to make it that much stronger. Hope that helps!

    Have you tried or considered adding the holes to your template instead of free-handing it? As you were holding the leather with all the holes in it, I was thinking that I would have laid it out on the template and marked the holes there before fastening it together. It might make the second build faster.

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  7 років тому +1

      Ryan Anderson Sorry Ryan - just saw your msg. We've tried that before, but unfortunately every piece of leather is different (darn cows) even from the same hide. Due to this variation, we've found that punching holes separately on each box keeps a high level of quality. Doing so beforehand can create a crooked box or a box that doesn't line up well due to the differences in leather.

    For leather items like this deck box is it necessary to condition the leather periodically to extend the life of the leather? If so what do you recommend, would the leather new work for maintenance?

    • @vestriproductions1135
      @vestriproductions1135  6 років тому

      Jenny Swenson Yes, Leather New could work, but Neatsfoot Oil is better. In fact, the more you handle the Box, the better it looks because the oils from your hands also help to condition leather over time.

      Hey Douglas! Thanks for your question! Because we sell our boxes, we can't provide you with a pattern/dimensions. Making your own is half the fun! Go ahead and get some cheap yoga mats/eva foam/poster board and do some test boxes before you cut your leather. :-D

      I'll try and show to my friends! Publicize your work!

    Awesome video man! Quick question, what weight of leather did you use for this?

      Thanks for the quick reply! I've got a good amount of 11-12 oz leather left over from a previous project and was just curious if I could use that. Guess not though!

    Hi have you ever tried steaming the final box? I am wondering if it gives it a bit more rigidity. Will try on me next one.

      Hey Lukas! Thanks for your comment! Our boxes stay very rigid due to the shaping and drying early on. You could try it if you want - every cow is different though and some hides just aren't the best for box creation. Slightly rigid single shoulders work the best. Best of luck creating!

      +Vestri Productions thanks for your reply, i have tried hot water or steam before and it helped. Those were smaller things like phone cases, mugs or wallets. I will let you know how it went with the box. I have a few different hides and a few patterns to try. All the best bro.

      +lukas rohulan steam is not good, curled the leather.

      lukas rohulan OH NO!!!!! :'( Yeah... heat does weird stuff sometimes. Try just wetting the leather into a shape and letting it dry without heat. :-D

    Wouldn't using some strong magnets be a decent idea? It's not going to lock anything in if you shake it rigorously but it should keep everything inside even if you flip it upside down. It'll be less hassle. Great video, btw.
