    Thanks a million Professor! For anyone who has questions, feel free to ask me here or on etsy. I originally built the first box for my friend who has many vintage decks and needed something more protective than just a plastic box. The box is very stout and a nice addition to any magic players card storage solution.

      +Shivam Bhatt Absolutely not, if you would like a different top just let me know and I'm pretty sure I can make it whatever you would like. Something pretty like walnut or how about some more cedar! Just let me know what you would like or the flavor and I can suggest some woods.

      1) Do you still offer the Humidor? 2) Does it only protect foils from curling, or can it reverse the damage curled foils have already experienced?

    these are gorgeous, watching your channel actually inspired me to make my own wooden case with my dad. It is made of mahogany, hold around 12 decks using the inner lid as a binder for trades and turned out very nice for our first attempt, but far from perfect. I know these pieces albeit pretty expensive are worth every penny. You have to earn the experience necessary to build something that well with your hands. great show!

    Great video. I am a woodworker and my son asked me to make him a box for his cards so I was looking for ideas. The artists whose work you show are clearly at the top of their game. By the way Padauk is pronounced “pah-dook” and wenge is generally pronounced “wengay” by woodworkers.

    As a cigar smoker/hobbyist/what I do for a living AND a magic player, I feel like I should point out that what you said about the danger of using a cigar humidor is false. Cigar humidors from reputable manufactures are hand made with excellent materials and craftsmanship, and do not have issues with resins or sap. If they did, they wouldn't be any good for keeping cigars either, as that would ruin your cigars. Keep in mind cigar humidors use kiln dried Spanish cedar, specifically to make this a non-issue for your cigars. Serious cigar smokers and collectors are generally just as meticulous with their collection as serious card collectors.
    I would actually recommend using a cigar humidor instead of the humidor you showed, as a humidor made for cigars will provide a much better seal than just that flat lid with no lip. Better seal means more reliable humidity control. Keep in mind the operative words "reputable manufacturer", as cheaply made humidors will not seal and may not use kiln dried Spanish cedar.

    As an addition to the video - On custom woods: Cocobolo is probably the best wood available. It is the most desirable wood for making sword and knife handles. A wood that takes the abuse of sword and knife handles is what I'd want my box made of...plus, it's beautiful!

      It’s my absolute favorite to work with personally, but it is a synthesizer, which makes it dicey to work with, especially since it actually smells rather nice when it burns/is sanded. It’s also an expensive wood. But I agree, it’s a beautiful, hardy wood.

    I bought an Aaron cain Mirage East Indian Rosewood and Fire Maple windowless 100 double sleeved card Dice and Deck Vault because of your recommendation and i must say your Grade for his work was perfect and justified. I just wanted to add my own experience with it and to be completely honest gloat.
    The only thing that might be annoted is that the lid is fraction too tight and doesnt close very smoothly. It closes and very tightly so, but you have to wigglle it a bit on the last quarter inch on the deck side and on the last five millimeters on the dice side. I am sure that will solve itself as soon as i have used it for a while. On the postive side there is to say that you cant properly see the exquisty of the craftmanship of the box in a video you have to hold it in your hand. It is just astoundingly beatifull.

    These videos have helped me make up my mind on deck boxes. I now use exclusively Ultra Pro basic deck boxes for any deck I build, until the deck proves itself and becomes something I want to take to events. Those decks then move up to Dex Protection boxes, of which I have 5, (two for commander, three for modern). These are my prized decks. Some day I hope to be able to bling out these decks and when I do I'll be adding something truly special, like a Wyrmwood or Aaron Cain custom box to my wish-list... but damn this hobby has got expensive now.

    I can't say enough about getting these kinds of boxes/accessories. The main reason is that craftsmen like the above are so few and far between and the quality is typically amazing. Support your local craftsman and get one of these amazing boxes. :) (I personally have a deck box and what I call my "draft box" from Aaron Cain. I always get compliments on them and they're holding up really well.

    Awesome boxes shown here. I know it's been years since this video BUT:
    the "correct" pronunciation or phonetics for the wood species are as follow:
    Padauk (6:49) - pa-duke (like duchess or duke or Dukes of Harzards lol)
    wenge (7:29) - when-gay (no example needed here)
    I'm definitely going to gather some ideas and make a pokemon card holder for my son. He's been asking me for one since he first got 1 card pack of 6 cards lmao. He now has about 30/40 so why not. It's not a lot but then again he just started to get into them 2 weeks ago. Thanks for this video

    Sorry to say it, but although wyrmwood boxes are amazing quality on the wood side, they are absolutely screwing over customers on the engraving. I know because I own a high quality laser engraver. Charging 100 dollars for an image engraved means I'd only need 30 customers with that request to pay off the engraver. The engraving takes about 30 minutes and there's nothing 'hand crafted' about it, all done by machine.

      Cool dude, i am sure you also own a company and throw out these boxes for like 50$ while being able to make a living of it? No? Guessed so.
      At least where i am from, a "normal" woodcrafter costs the company ~40€ an hour, so if you only look at this, you have to build this whole thing in 5 hours only to get even!
      And then there are all the other costs: Maintenance of the machines/tools, taxes, storage costs, electricity, planning and design of the objects, marketing, materials, etc etc etc.
      Maybe 200$ is a little expensive, but it depends a lot on how the company is set up. Besides that, i am sure that they made the engraving more expensive so they can reduce the price on the normal boxes, meaning regular stuff might even be close of being too cheap to actually make profit.
      If anything is a ripoff, its every single card which costs more then a few cents ;)

    The xbeau humidor is beautiful. I got an xbeau deck box, and it was beautifully and artfully crafted, however be aware that if shipped to a dryer state/country, they will warp (as in the way a guitar will). This may (or may not) affect the seal of the humidor, but just as a side note, be advised. Still, arguably one of the best objects on the market.

    • @izahealyou
      @izahealyou 8 років тому +4

      Oddly enough that's what I use. Bought a rather large one while I was in the Marine Corps. Originally housed my laptop, and two 3tb hard drives. Then after I got out, my duty gun ammo and magazines. Now it serves as the perfect case for my decks. Holds 15 legion deck boxes, and a large section where I keep rares, fetch lands, tokens, dice, and beads.
      Best part about a pelican box is the fact you can order new pick and pluck foam. If I need to repurpose the box again, or go back to an old use, I just switch the foam out.

      +GreenSscythe It's pretty darn important to talk about the wood you'll use when storing cards. Exotic woods while pretty are full of lots of oils, and I would be really cautious about those if I was storing my dual lands in there. Wood much like the cardboard we play with, all likes to be happy and nothing makes cards more happy that consistent and predictable humidity when stored.

    I have a $1200 Modern deck and a couple of $600 ones but this is a little too rich for my tastes. Might be funny to have one and just have a couple of pauper decks inside it. I understand some people like good craftsmanship but yea I'm happy with my Dragon Shield Deckbox, which I've dropped multiple times on cement/tiles and it barely has any marks or anything. If I dropped one of these my heart would probably burst out of my chest.

    Hey prof, I alway wonder why when you test the durably of deck boxes you don't use those worthless double sided promotional cards that way you can use more realistic test such as dropping it from a table or putting it in a backpack with other things that might crush it. That way we can see more realistic durability tests and you don't have to endanger your precious cards.

    coming from a cigar smoker who maintains a humidor. do not get this humidor deck box unless you are willing to monitor your humidity levels at least every few days. the reason, the area were the hydrometer is acts a point of weakness. it will leach or let out humidity. Just a fair warning. Also, you CANNOT just get it and store your cards. humidors have cedar inside normally and to be able to maintain the humidity levels you need to hone it first. so make sure you learn how to this or your deck box could be dirty at levels of 65+.

    • @xBeauGaming
      @xBeauGaming 8 років тому +2

      +misanthrope4life Totally, the hardest part is getting the initial humidity to stabilize and keeping the lid closed as much as possible as not to keep resetting the humidity in the box. I envisioned this box being on a deck or in a place folks are checking so the gauge is pretty good for that. Shipped boxes will have the gauge epoxied into the lid so that leeching should be fairly minimal. There isn't a rubber seal around the rim or anything like that, but even where I live near the ocean, it's totally possible to maintain a specific humidity assuming you're not opening the box everyday.

      +Steve L Search amazon for "Boveda 49% RH Two-Way Humidity Control", these are the best of the best for set it and forget it humidity control. The are really amazing.

    • @xBeauGaming
      @xBeauGaming 8 років тому

      +Steve L I'd imagine where you live also plays a large part in the equation as well. When I lived in Colorado the humidity very low and usually meant I needed to add humidity but now that I'm in San Francisco, I have the opposite issue. It's going to be a matter of just keeping an eye on the humidity until the box can normalize. If you're already double sleeving and not living on a house boat, you're probably going to be ok.

    Hello Professor!
    I really enjoy all the content your college has to offer!
    Lately I was searching for a quite simple deckbox (preferably wooden) in the color of the Sultai. I could only find the purple version by, if i remember correctly, UltraPro.
    Are there any deckboxes in those Clan and/or Guild colors?
    Or is there a good deckbox to spraypaint yourself?
    Best wishes from Germany!
