  • Black rot on orchids is caused by Pythium and Phytophthora species. Black rot targets a variety of orchids but Cattleya orchids are especially susceptible
In mature plants, the disease can strike at any leaves, pseudobulbs or roots, but often starts in new leaves or growing leads, and progresses downward through the plant until reaching the roots..
Black rot shows up as dark blackish spots or lesions on the affected plant part. The black spot or spots enlarge rapidly and can spread throughout the plant. If allowed to reach the crown of a monopodial orchid, the rot will kill the plant. Affected leaves may turn yellow around the infected area, and the lesions themselves will be soft and exude water when pressure is applied.
    Treatment-
    -Isolate
-cut affected area ,remove whole leaf or pseudobulb if necessary
    -seal with cinnamon or fungicide
    prevention-
-Dont use unsterile gardening tools, avoid reusing media or pots
-Avoid water logging in grow area
    -Good air circulation
-if any plant is grossly affected better to throw it than risking contamination in other plants

Thank u so much sir❤️🙂I watched the other video that u sent me..I think for aphids and all garlic water may work..if the attack is mild for a full blown attack we may need some stronger solution🙂

I really wondered how I can grow them here in Bengaluru... Your videos gave me confidence ... I will try it again I think... Specially you mounting technique is the best and convincing way of growing orchids 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

So very happy that I stumbled on your channel. I live in Chennai (similar climate to Bhubaneswar)..and hence very relieved to find that it is possible to grow orchids really well in this kind of climate. I am just a beginner and one of the things I have planned to do is to switch to Seaweed and Epsom Salt from NPK. Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. They are extremely helpful and practical. Please wish me luck !

Hi adyasha, what is your opinion about treating this type of rot with fungicides like saaf or bavistin? I had this issue last year with two cattleyar। I sealed all cuts with saaf and dipped the roots in bavistin solution , then kept them dry to the point pseudobulbs shrivelled. I barely watered them enough to keep them alive। This spring they threw out new growths। Only then I repotted and started watering them properly again

Hi...I actually don't use fungicides..so I'm probably not the right person to give my opinion regarding it... however there is no harm in trying in a very orchid..we should do all that we can do to save an orchid ...n thank you for sharing what u did..I will definitely try it sometime if I have a sick orchid which doesn't respond to cinnamon and peroxide🙂
