I dunno how your comment got buried all the way down here. It's an unforgivable crime! Btw, if you haven't reviewed all the Purge movies yet, now I really want to see your hot takes on them. EDIT: Future commenters, ignore my bit about Jenny's comment getting buried. At the time I wrote this it was halfway down the page.
Jenny I love you too. My favorite video is when you went off about Avengers, Toy Story, and the Twilight Zone and made a lot of guys really angry for some reason because they didn't "get" it (??)
You know back when I was youger and had shittaste you (nostalgia chic) were my favorite youtuber, now that I´m older and with a better taste you are still one of my favorites thanks to this channel and what you've done with it, funny how life turns out. Like not everything you ever did before was bad, some parts still hold up but overall the leap in quality is undeniable.
Ooh, yeah. I remember the super-early 'riff style' videos. She turned to essay format really early on; it was so obviously better for her. And I would say, looking around at the UA-cam film theory sphere, she's been quite influential in that regard.
I'm a newer viewer, though I have gone back and watched some Nostalgia Chick stuff on this channel. Is there a story behind Lindsay moving on? The 'channel that must not be named' comment on this video made me curious. Did her taste just evolve or was there some kind of controversy? I don't follow Nostalgia Critic or anything either.
I loled so hard at the Jenny Nicholson impression. I've been bingeing her channel while I sew and after hearing "Oooh, the puuuuuurge", I felt an immediate need to rewatch 1D during The Purge.
At least she isn't deleting them from existence. Although I would enjoy a short commentary of few sentences under each of old videos for example with real opinion of the movie... But I understand this would take time and effort (including effort of making herself watch these videos :P)
Lindsay Ellis that's a lot of salt toward your old content. I stick away from social media because of the royal s#itshow it is and after googling why I couldn't find a quality/fact checked answer. I know you're busy but is there a cliffnotes version out there of why you don't like your old content, ie: improperly researched, production meddling, evil dopplegangers, etc?
Thank you for plugging that PBS show. I don't think they are doing enough to push it (because they are new to this format). But you've been CRUSHING it. I'm overjoyed that PBS recognizes true talent when they encounter it. I recently participated in the PBS Digital Studios survey and expressed my delight in seeing you involved in what they're doing. PBS is seriously taking over massive proportion of what I watch on UA-cam these days, and I could not be happier about it. They have high standards, and consistently put out excellent content. (Regardless, I am proud to support you directly via patreon. I have for at least a year now, and I have never experienced a micron of dissatisfaction in my investment.) I don't mean to come off as a superfanboy, but, I really do love how much you've taught me. You've changed my mind on a lot of things, and I've loved to be enlightened every time.
PBS aren't new to it, they've been doing UA-cam shows for like 6+ years at this point. Some of them are some of the best channels on UA-cam. Like Space Time, and Idea Channel (that one ran for 6 years and then sadly ended)
Most critics just point out the things in movies they don't like, and maybe give a base explanation of why they personally don't like it. Lindsay takes you on a wild journey into not just the film itself, but the creative process and history of its creators as well as the context in which it was made, including but not limited to the philosophical ideas of the time and extended source materials and history where relevant. Lindsay doesn't teach you why she personally doesn't like things. She teaches you _why_ movies are the way they are, and how they got that way. Treasure Planet is a bad movie? Sure, she _could_ spend 10 minutes complaining about the plot and nitpicking dumb choices, but she doesn't - instead she tells the history of the Walt Disney company and how on earth this thing got made, and it's fantastic.
@@adampoole948 You're free to like the NC, I use to as well. But for me, he never evolved his content enough to keep my attention when there are other reviewers who's style I like better. As for "the channel," some horrible things have come to light about their actions towards content creators, that I can no longer, in good conscience, support the channel.
"Maybe some of my old classmates who are actually in the industry." I will wait patiently for a Ryan Coogler crossover Lindsay, no matter how long it takes.
ooooooooooh Yeah! I mean he must'n't be the easiest person to contact (and with the most free time) but apparently he's a total sweetheart so ... do this please?
@@cartoonmaster2401 I'm an atheist who loves The Prince of Egypt. In fact, religious people tend to hate religion being turned into pop culture more than non-religious people do (which is why I'd be curious to know Lindsay's reasoning, because I don't think she's super religious).
As long as it doesn't spread any destructive messages, I am always open to hear a good story, no matter if it is connected to a currently active organized religion.
Thank you for that response about Song of the South. I've been saying those exact same things for years. There's no point in pretending the movie doesn't exist when "Zip a-de-do-dah" is such a big deal as far as Disney's music goes. They should do what Warner Brothers did with the classic Looney Tunes cartoons, and release it with a little title card explaining that the movie is a product of it's time, and while that doesn't make it less racist, it does not do anyone any good to ignore that these ideals were once standard.
I never understood why you didn't have more subscribers, but because its been slow and steady I feel like the people that are here are definitely people that will stay for a long time. I always thought of Lindsay as a hidden gem on UA-cam.
I'll be honest; I didn't get around to watching anything from this channel because I wasn't a fan of the Nostalgia Chick stuff and therefore wrongheadedly dismissed her stuff for a while. If I remember correctly, though, it was her video about the First Order from the new Star Wars films that turned me around. I'd been on a bit of a tear looking for Last Jedi-related stuff (because I love it and am puzzled by the negative reactions from so many people), and it sounded interesting. After that, I went back and looked at the other more recent videos, realizing that she was applying more of a lens of actual film theory to her examinations. Her current criticism is exceptionally insightful and reminds me so much of the film courses I took in college (in a good way).
I kind of cringe when anyone identifies as the _____ chick or dude or bro. Then you throw in the bright makeup and I'm going to come in assuming this channel is some BS dressed up all pretty. I expect the content to suffer the more well coiffed a person is. As a contrast, I hopped on board Vintage Space pretty quick. I didn't even mind that much when she went through her weird "wear a prom dress for every episode" phase. Content wins eventually. I don't even know how on board I am with this channel right now but I'm at least subbed.
i’m always shocked to see that you don’t have millions of followers, because so many people i know love watching and discussing your videos. you’re one of those youtubers who doesn’t have millions of followers, but the many followers you do have are crazy passionate about your content because it’s always so freaking good. congrats!
Yeah I like that film too and would love to hear it torn apart. I like Rent too and was first introduced to Lindsay through her Rent video so maybe I'm just a masochist. ;)
"Your feelings are your feelings and I wish people would kinda own that. Feelings are not rational. You rationalize them by having supporting evidence. But at the end of the day, if you have a criticism, it's probably because you had an emotional reaction. Finding words and supporting evidence, and being able to articulate why you had that emotional reaction is kinda the best you can do. And I think the worst people can do is have an emotional reaction and not really explore it, and not really put words to it, and not really articulate why they feel the way they feel. Either that, or just delude themselves, which also a really popular thing to do these days." I swear, one day, I may print that quote out, frame it, and hang it up on my wall. I think those are great words to live by.
I found her the same way. Contra is soy-mommy, Lindsay is soy-auntie and Jenny Nicholson is soy-cousin that no one can remember how they’re related, but we all like her too much to question it.
The Dark Channel, the Lord of the Memes, the Three-Headed Beast, the Unspeakable Anticritic... its true name shall remain a mystery to all the innocent it hasn't affected yet! °o°
starfall0 Channel Awesome. There's a Google document from the contributors called Channel Not So Awesome that revealed damning information on how the company treated them: lack of communication, poor working conditions on the anniversary films, flip flopping on allowing the contributors to collect ad revenue or link Patreons, sexual misconduct, etc. Lindsay particularly objected to rape scene written for The Nostalgia Chick in the film To Boldly Flee. I can't say I blame her.
"MovieBob, who is your favorite reviewer?" "I love Lindsay. She's a dear friend and she's better at my job then I could ever be." "Lindsay, who's your favorite reviewer?" "I love....cake decoration!"
Oh the drama around this. For those not in the know. Lindsay called Bob out hard for creeping on her and telling the whole world about their apparently nonexistent friendship.
Lindsay, just so you know, there are also totally impartial people like me who'd be really interested in you ripping it to shreds. Those movies are the most fun because I have little invested in them but at the same time I'd be learning something new from the critique because I don't actively hate it
I haven't seen any of Lindsey's nostalgia videos but they can't be that bad she's always so astute in her videos I can't imagine her being that far off base in some of her older content. Lindsey characterizes New York as fucking unlivable due to the degradation of the train system and advent of uber but is it really that awful?
I know this video is almost a year old but I find the idea of video essays as academic texts in the same ways as print essays so interesting because your video on Rent was used as a "reading" in one of my classes this semester. I definitely think younger profs are more open to using nontraditional sources in discussions. Love your videos!
I'm honestly so glad that you're going to have a home for the Nostalgia Chick content. I can't even remember how I first found you, it's been so long that I've followed your videos. But what I do remember is being a sad and lonely 13 year old who liked movies. And thought that your videos about the movies I liked were funny and interesting. Now I'm a slightly less sad and lonely 23 year old who still watches every single thing you post. Obviously it makes sense to distance yourself from old content that you've created, but I have to admit. You're probably the biggest influence on all of the film studies courses I've taken. And now I have a minor in a field that I might do nothing with, but who knows? Maybe I'll make video essays eventually. I guess I just wanted to let you know that for a long while in my early teens, Nostalgia Chick was one of my only friends and I'm always going to be insanely grateful to you for that.
This comment really resonated with me. I was also about the same age when I got into NChick, and am the same age as you now. Completely agree that I found Lindsay at a low point in my life and those videos not only saw me through that point but also formed the basis of my style of humour.
Yeah. Me too. Must be weird to hear this, but as a violently insecure teenager, I watched and adored every one of her videos. Helped me get away from it all. I was devastated when she stopped uploading her NC stuff. Years later I found this channel. It's like meeting up with an old friend (one that doesn't know me, but still) and having a long talk over good beer.
I sort of recognized her when I watched the loop a couple times when I encountered it as a reaction gif on Imgur. I was like "waaaaait a minute... is that?!? O_o " now I know for sure :p
Ehm, no I discovered this channel later, fairly recently, and haven't gone through all of them, but because I had seen some I recognized the character.
As a fan who's been watching since those old days, I appreciate your at least putting the old videos up on a new channel. Edit: the Nostalgic Woman title is a nice touch. It's really a bummer that era was so horrible for you, but obviously you've moved on and are doing some great and scholarly things nowadays. Congrats on making it to 400K!
May I ask what happened and why it fell through? I've only been following Lindsay for a short while now but I'm sensing something pretty bad went down...
@@Trizvdl She was part of a network of reviewers as the Nostalgia Chick, and from the sound of things it just wasn't run well and the owner of the company she was under contract with was a massive asshole. There were complaints of intimidation and mismanagement of funds and poor working conditions when contributors were brought together to do the yearly anniversaries. I'm really only barely scratching the surface though, you can find videos about the #ChangeTheChannel movement that go into more detail than me. There was also a Google Doc that you can get to pretty easily if you search that hashtag and "google doc" that has contributions from the actual content creators who worked alongside Lindsay, as well as Lindsay herself.
The “channel who shall not be named” is the main reason I ended up here. I initially hated NC when I was in a freshman in high school and found him obnoxious and nit picky. At some point around starting college I apparently regressed and became a deeply devoted fan UNTIL the doc dropped. I read all of it even though I really didn’t want to kill the love I had for the channel and knew deep down I’d hate what I’d see. Sure enough I hated it. Around the time I read this I was working through a backlog of Nostalgia Chic vids and realizing that despite the attempt to just make you the “female Critic” (which omg really, is he so stuck in the 80s everything needs female alternate versions to market?) you seemed to actually know what you were talking about. You didn’t just scream “I DONT LIKE IT” and give some half baked explanation. The channel is entry level, but as your tastes evolve and discussions mature your channel is one where I can feel like I’ve learned something significant and his is just- woof.
I find the notion of owning up to the past, making sure of framing the context, not as an excuse but as an explanation, to be the healthiest way to move forward in a world with a tool that can bring back anyone's dark past to haunt them. I find it smart and admirable that you don't only bring it to atention but practice it yourself.
I love the PBS series. But also, while I totally understand the want and need to consider yourself in a 'new era', your "Christmas Shoes" video deserves to be in the MoMA.
Thank you so much for putting academic integrity above shoveling out hollow cash grab content. Thank you for putting our intelligence above our entertainment.
The Great Mouse Detective should NOT get a live-action remake! (Pretty much, the concept of ANY movie that focuses on talking anthropamorphized animals and NO humans 'live-action' is stupid!) What the Great Mouse Detective DOES deserve is a sequel on the levels of greatness as The Rescuers Down Under! Yes, make it good enough to be released on the big screen! It should be called 'The Hound of the Mousekervilles'! And it should be allowed to tackle all the dark disturbing shit that the Aurthur Conan Doyle novel contains! Raise your hands if you agree!
Never watched TGMD but really agree with live-action anthromorphics being senseless. I think there's a desire from people to see characters in a real world but it plays to none of the strengths of either medium.
Ur videos as nostalgia chick while flawed was some of the first content I saw criticizing analyzing media at age 13 omg that’s over 10 years ago, but it introduced me to film theory and I found your shorts that you made and I’m a fan of you, not whoever ur affiliated with. I love your new content it’s wonderful and like going back to your old videos as well
If I can survive your hatred for The Little Mermaid, which is one of my favorites, I can survive your hatred for Prince of Egypt, another one of my favorites. Don't be afraid to do a video essay on that one Lindsay :) I'm really fascinated in hearing your thoughts, your video essays give me life :)
I love your "horrible old content"! I also really love what you've been up to lately. The whole of your body of work is interesting and the old stuff helps illuminate the new. Thanks for not hiding the old stuff forever!
I would be fascinated by a Lindsay Ellis video essay of Birth of a Nation. There was great cinematic achievements, but there was also terrible social consequence that far exceeded its artistic benefits. I would be so interested to hear your thoughts!
Two things I really liked about the Prince of Egypt: good looking people (Moses, the wife, the sister especially) and songs that made me feel strong feelings.
It's the lighting and her using a foundation that does match her skintone. For example Robert Welsh on camera uses a foundation 2 tones darker than his RL tone cos if he does he'd look like a pale ghost with his light set-up
I'm so sorry that you're ashamed of your old content! Your videos got me through many stressful college nights when I needed a laugh or to remember an old movie I'd mostly forgotten. You even got me into Daria, which is now one of my favorite '90s shows! It's why I still watch your content today, and I'm sure thousands more watching this are in the same boat.
I have a soft spot for all the nostalgia chick videos. You were always my favorite *name redacted* creator and I still love everything from the pocahontas nostalgia chick audition video onward!
I know a lot of her disdain for her old Nostalgia Chick material comes from personal stuff that I have no business or interest knowing the specifics of, but I think she’s being way to hard on her older work. The whole reason I’m here is because of that rough, sometimes rather clunky stuff. Most of it still holds up. Mostly.
Another long time fan here. The newer stuff is more nuanced, thoughtful, varied, and higher quality. But the subject matter is now less likely to interest me.
I don't know... I actually find myself watching more of her newer videos especially because of the subject matters. She should do more loose canons in particular
I came for the Phantom video one day because I was bored at work and UA-cam recommended it and was really perplexed when I saw the Nostalgia Chick videos (mostly by the ponytails), but I'm about the same age as Lindsay so a lot of it resonated with me, and in (most of) them she had something really interesting and thought-provoking to say. Also, ranking boybands. Her newer stuff is better, but that doesn't make the old stuff bad.
That part on the ending... well, I'm glad you made that decision. I understand how annoying it could be for you, so thank you for the consideration for the fans that want to rewatch some old stuffs. As someone who's been watching your videos for nearly a decade I can only say that your progress and changes has been stellar, glad to see you in where you are right now =].
I know you had bad experiences at... the _other_ channel, but you don't need to be ashamed of it. It's because of those old videos that many of us are here still supporting you, and many of the other creators that have come out of that channel. I mean, you and Todd and Elisa and Nella and Kyle and Paul--damn, girl, you've even got Mara Fucking Wilson in your clique--you're all some of my favorite people to ever come out of the internet. I love all your insights, your senses of humor, and how much you all value critical thinking. I can't emphasize enough how important that is to me. Yeah, some of the of the old stuff is clunky, but some of it also still holds up, and even if you think it doesn't, it still allowed you the opportunity to keep developing how you write, edit, and research your videos, leading to this amazing jump of content quality once you were in control of your own work and channel. I think the point to remember is that you were not the problem at the old channel, and you couldn't have known what would happen there. And once you did get a sense of what was happening on a broader scale across the website, you and everybody else banded together and left, and you all seem to be doing well for yourselves since leaving. It's really fucking hard vocalizing that there is a problem at work. It's hard figuring out who are appropriate--and effective--confidantes. It's hard talking to HR. It's hard not doubting your truth after the fact. It's all hard, but it's also brave, and it's brave to leave and to keep going.
the people have spoken and the people want a prince of egypt vid. i'm probably gonna burst a vein watching it bc i love that goddamn movie but at the same time i crave dat discourse so bring it on
You're my favorite critic on UA-cam. Though I don't always agree with your points in your videos, but the way you communicate them is so entertaining that every time I watch one of your videos I end up spending hours binging your content. So glad I dropped NC and picked up your stuff instead. Keep it up!
Yeah. Hate to be that bitch, but her eye makeup is lookin’... real rough here. Distractingly poor. Use some of that Audible money and buy a high-quality eye shadow palette like Urban Decay or Tarte, etc, and give one of those vapid Sexy Bitches on YT a view on one of their tutorial videos. It honestly helps so much.
Big fan since forever here ^^ i missed your old stuff for a while but ended up growing meh of it, as the NC things. I feel that as i became more like an "adult" i started to appreciate more and more your more natural humour, and your deeper approach that felt more rooted into reality. It's nice to have you still here with this video essay media to binge watch from time to time. Each take i feel i learn something new!
Just as long as one doesn't put the other in a chokehold like our broadcasters here in Detroit do.....it'll all be good. Yes, this did happen Tuesday night. 😂
For what it's worth, I'm glad you're archiving the old videos. I understand the distaste for them, but I feel there's a value to the audience who saw them at a developmental time and want to look upon them with older eyes. Lord knows there is a lot of history that's just so much digital smoke now. Or maybe it's just nostalgia talking.
I have been watching you since I was 13 and you were just starting out on the channel whomst shall not be named. Watching your rise to success has been amazing, you've come so far.
I’m happy the old videos happened, though I understand the baggage they carry. I have many happy memories of watching your old stuff, and it eventually led me here, to the new stuff! The new hotness, as it were. Really glad you’re still putting stuff out, Linds. We will keep watching!
Lindsay is so talented (arguably the best on UA-cam) at film/fiction analysis, that I'd love to see her given a major studio budget to write and director a film. Just to see what she'd come up with.
I'd say her and Dan Olsen are probably the best currently-active ones, certainly when it comes to analysis of themes and the like. I'm also a HUGE fan of Every Frame a Painting, but I haven't seen an update from that channel in a loooooong time, so I'm worried it's a totally dead channel at this point.
I dont remember where I know this but the creators of that channel said that they are not going to make more videos. Because they are going to concentrate more on their Carrier so that means no more videos.
Big Joel is a more recent film essayist that I really enjoy. He's made me think of certain movies in ways I never considered. Like his video talking about the merits of The Lorax had me hooked.
I loved watching nostalgia chick. I've watched your content since 2009. Don't ever be ashamed of your past work. You have to make mistakes to become you are/the best version of yourself.
Am I the only one who never thought CinemaSins was intended to be taken seriously? I don't even think of it as criticism. It's just riffing, but in a monetizable format. I watch it when I want to shut my brain off.
+ZipplyZane bobvids made a pretty well-thought-out video on his problems with CinemaSins. To super-condense his 30 minute video, his main point (that I can remember) is that the writers mix satire and (poorly reasearched) film criticism, but make very little effort to distinguish the two. It gives the surface impression of a real film review instead of a dumb comedy video, which leaves a lot of the viewers taking the videos somewhat seriously and unfairly judging movies. Half-serious-half-satire is a really weird model that leads to a lot of miscommunication and confusion. And in general, a lot of people have turned their backs on the channel because it's changing the film analysis landscape on UA-cam into people passing off their half-assed videos as reviews. Plus, their fans are kinda toxic (not really their fault, but still annoying). Apologies if this reply is super disorganized or confusing. I'm way too tired for this hahaha.
Actually it's not even just Cinemasins anymore. There's far worse and that formatting in the scene reminds me of one of the worse. I'm not even sure it was the first of its kind.
Holy Crap! Congrats Lindsay on the 400k and especially on getting a new gig with PBS Digital. They do a ton of great work and I think you will fit right in with that crew.
Personally, I had investment when I was a hardcore Christian. Nowadays though, I don't really see it as any different than dramatizing and taking fully seriously a fairy tale or whatever. It's just a story. You could argue that it has issues in legitimizing the entirely false and historically fabricated story that is The Exodus (since we have absolutely no information such a thing actually existed, especially from Egyptian sources) but if you go by the text of the film, the performances, the music, the art... It's a fantastic movie. It's more the context and its place in pop culture/organized religion that is a bit of a problem. At least in my opinion.
NK_20 even go by the film's context, the God still came though as an unreasonable jerk as how he act toward Moses and how he punishs the entire people of Egypt for their leaders' sin and stubbornness.
T2266 I don't disagree, but that *is* accurate to the original text. The Old Testament God in the Christian Bible (I can't speak about more accurate accounts of the actual Jewish Tanakh) is a petty, spiteful being that demands utter obedience and uses group punishment.
I mean... How sure are we it's not a joke? It seems like a long walk for a joke, but so is Awoken. Because it sounds like someone just drew "Hercules" and "Clinton Administration" from a hat.
HEY! I found you from your "horrible" old content. I spent a weekend watching most of it, some twice, possibly on accident. Either way, it's great to see how far you've come and we all have to start somewhere. I just wanted to say congrats on 400K and here's to 400k more!
Congrats on 400k! You are definitely my favorite video essayist, with Folding Ideas coming in close second. I'm always happy to see your content in my feed!
Lindsay, you always look so great in your videos, and that eyeliner is STUNNING. Really makes your eyes pop! Also, congrats on all your success! I've been a fan since 2012ish but the videos you've done this past year are by far my favorites. Can't wait for more in the future! 😊
"I'm really lazy" Says the woman who creates really well thought out and in depth essays. Sure... Also, your past is what helps make you who you are. While you might not agree with the videos you made in the past, they helped you become who you are now, you shouldn't be ashamed. I'm sure you have a much better idea of the kinds of videos you'd rather create now than you'd have if you didn't go though that time with... other channels...
Like Disney should do with Song of the South, you can recontextualize your old content, rather than sweeping it under the rug and trying to ignore it. It comes full circle!
Let's just cut the bullshit. The Channel Awesome situation is fucked and it sucks that Nostalgia Critic is descending into squalor, but we still got people like Lindsay, Lewis Lovhaug, and Dominic Smith out of it, so there's that to be thankful for.
Even as an atheist I really like The Prince of Egypt, but I would /love/ to hear your take on it-criticism of organized religion and all. I understand why you wouldn't want to make a video, though.
Honestly, in 2018 if she can make a video about Marxism organized religion should be a walk in the park. At worst most replies will be "I'm not religious but I respect ____" type stuff. And then, like, one or two threads where someone mentions religion is a net negative and a shitstorm ensues.
I'd hope the discussion would go down as smooth as you describe, cuz truthfully I really like that movie and hearing Lindsay has an issue with it is something I very like to get her thoughts on.
Oh my god, I'm an atheist too, and I just gotta say... I started watching The Prince of Egypt with no clue what it was about. I was legit just like "oh cool, a movie about an Egyptian prince, I dig that! I love ancient Egypt!", and then the music (which was amazing) and aesthetics completely won me over. The instant I realized that it was a biblical story about halfway through I felt SO BETRAYED.
Yeah? Of course she has to have it to understand it. I think Lindsay is one of those persons who watches/reads something before making bold statements about it.
Not to mention the context in which she said it was targeted towards its proliferation as critique material rather than the book itself. I mean that hot garbage has been debated to death, let it rest.
The most interesting and provocative scene of sexual violence I know of is in Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue. The interesting thing about it is, it's not even real within the context of the movie; the main character is shooting a scene for a TV show. However, it's very real to her, and... Actually, that scene, and the movie as a whole, has a lot of commentary on the exploitative nature of such a thing.
As well it should. There's a great video by... Breadsword, I think, talking about how lighting and color are used in that movie. He said that over-saturated lighting indicates delusion, and I think he's really onto something. But I disagreed with his conclusion about the ending. He interpreted it as Mima breaking through her delusion, since most of the frame is natural blues and greens. However, not only is her reflection cut off from that by the mirror frame, the background of the mirror is nothing but bright white light. Not to mention, she's talking to her reflection, so there's this sense of split identity...
Fopenplop she's never really been that good with anime honestly. it feels like she respects it a biiiiiit more nowadays but its definitely not something shed ever do a video on
MediMedusa They addressed this in the opening of the film. It’s not just for organized religion. It’s for the millions of people of faith no matter what variety it is since the story is talked about in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Besides, it ultimately is an awesome movie because it doesn’t have a good guy or a bad guy: just broken people with parental expectations There is a great deal of sensitivity in that film to everyone’s humanity.
Weirdly enough The Prince of Egypt has a strange place in my memory, because I wasn't allowed to watch it because it was "too Jewish" for my grandmother. I did finally watch it a little later and ended up really loving it, though I wonder how much of that is the forbidden fruit effect. Watching it as an atheist adult, it's a little strange to hear Lindsay talk about it as if it was elevated Christian propaganda considering my experience. I always saw it as slightly subversive due to the people not being white and being accurate to the Bible almost to the detriment of propaganda, not trying to gloss over or justify the death of the firstborns and the other rather grim parts of the story.
YOURE AMAZING ! @Lindsay Ellis you’re so academically and spiritually correct it HURTS. You’re essays and videos give me life. They help me. think about life and my life loving film the narratives the offer to its audience. Thanks for your wisdom and love for film. YOURE A TREASURE🤩
I want to say I've been roasted but that is kind of how I'd spend the Purge
I dunno how your comment got buried all the way down here. It's an unforgivable crime! Btw, if you haven't reviewed all the Purge movies yet, now I really want to see your hot takes on them.
EDIT: Future commenters, ignore my bit about Jenny's comment getting buried. At the time I wrote this it was halfway down the page.
Jenny Nicholson Now you need to go on Wattpad and read fanfic about you in the purge
You're a good sport.
Jenny I love you too. My favorite video is when you went off about Avengers, Toy Story, and the Twilight Zone and made a lot of guys really angry for some reason because they didn't "get" it (??)
I have watched some of Jenny Nicholson's videos, but still have yet to watch any Purge movies.
You know back when I was youger and had shittaste you (nostalgia chic) were my favorite youtuber, now that I´m older and with a better taste you are still one of my favorites thanks to this channel and what you've done with it, funny how life turns out.
Like not everything you ever did before was bad, some parts still hold up but overall the leap in quality is undeniable.
it helps that she got her own voice instead of trying to mimic Doug's (because that's what Doug wanted her show to be)
Ooh, yeah. I remember the super-early 'riff style' videos. She turned to essay format really early on; it was so obviously better for her. And I would say, looking around at the UA-cam film theory sphere, she's been quite influential in that regard.
this comment was an emotional rollercoaster.
Watch Quinton Reviews Fallen Titans video about Channel Awesome. Should cover what happened
Wait. Lindsay Ellis is the sausages-hitting-face girl? My whole life has been a lie.

I loled so hard at the Jenny Nicholson impression. I've been bingeing her channel while I sew and after hearing "Oooh, the puuuuuurge", I felt an immediate need to rewatch 1D during The Purge.
That was such a good impression
I really like that PBS series. Nice videos!
Re: Your disliking of the Nostalgia Chick videos.
You should do what Disney did with their wartime cartoons.
yes, but those are worth the effort. my old stuff is not.
It's Lindsay's Song of the South. J.K.
Edit: Wrote this before getting to the part you mention it.
Sorry if you're sick of hearing this, but I really enjoyed your "Labyrinth" and "Thumbelina" reviews. At least leave those up.

I second that!
PBS aren't new to it, they've been doing UA-cam shows for like 6+ years at this point. Some of them are some of the best channels on UA-cam. Like Space Time, and Idea Channel (that one ran for 6 years and then sadly ended)

They're legitimately one of the only actual education providers without an agenda I've encountered on UA-cam. All teaching with no marketing.
I mean... You’re the biggest voice on film UA-cam to me.
My favorite critic on UA-cam actually. Love your essays.

As long as it doesn't spread any destructive messages, I am always open to hear a good story, no matter if it is connected to a currently active organized religion.
It’s probably a capitalism thing.
@@tatehildyard5332 lol yeah, but now I want to hear about it more
Thank you for that response about Song of the South.
Well it's been done now, Disney has done it
I never understood why you didn't have more subscribers, but because its been slow and steady I feel like the people that are here are definitely people that will stay for a long time.

Either that, or just delude themselves, which also a really popular thing to do these days."

Congrats Lindsay!

So you haven't watched her old Nostalgia Chick stuff? It's from an episode.
Well it looks like her. Do you have that disease where you can't recognize people's faces?
I found Nostalgia Chick first and loved it. Then I found Nostalgia Critic and couldn't stand it. I just find that guy super annoying.

I love the PBS series. But also, while I totally understand the want and need to consider yourself in a 'new era', your "Christmas Shoes" video deserves to be in the MoMA.

The Great Mouse Detective should NOT get a live-action remake! (Pretty much, the concept of ANY movie that focuses on talking anthropamorphized animals and NO humans 'live-action' is stupid!)

Mostly.
Lew Archer 1949 I really like >90% of her old stuff, >80% of the new stuff.
Another long time fan here. The newer stuff is more nuanced, thoughtful, varied, and higher quality. But the subject matter is now less likely to interest me.
Right, if not for her older stuff I wouldn't even be here.
“Nostalgic Woman” oh my god that’s amazing.
Thank you for consistently making funny and thought-provoking content!

Good at analysing things doesn't automatically mean good at making things through.

I just realized, I've been watching your content for over 10 years and I still love it.
Congrats -- I've been loving your PBS series, too!
16:48 You can say Cinemasins, it's okay, we're all thinking it
Am I the only one who never thought CinemaSins was intended to be taken seriously? I don't even think of it as criticism. It's just riffing, but in a monetizable format.
I watch it when I want to shut my brain off.
I don't really like or dislike cinemasins, but a lot of film people on youtube don't care for how it shapes film discussion online
Same, in fact (ironically?) the ones sinning my favorite movies are often the funniest to me.
Congrats on the milestone & I enjoyed the first episode of Its Lit. Keep up the good work.
Wow, you HATE The Prince of Egypt? I don't think I've ever head someone say they actually hate it. Shit, now I'm intrigued.
Ask any Egyptians?
I kinda do. As an atheist born in a non-Christian family, I thought it was pretty messed up even when I was a kid.
T2266
I don't disagree, but that *is* accurate to the original text. The Old Testament God in the Christian Bible (I can't speak about more accurate accounts of the actual Jewish Tanakh) is a petty, spiteful being that demands utter obedience and uses group punishment.
"Hercules is a parable of the Clinton administration with Hades representing the Republicans"
crack is magical
T. Mack I just snorted my tea ☕️ 🤣
I mean, James Woods is a Republican...
Congrats on 400k been watching since the day after tomorrow review and still love your content.
You know that CGP Grey is very into chick flicks? That would be a perfect topic for a collab.
Agamidae Yes! This. Please. Right now. That's like two of my favourite people
Omg please universe listen to our prayers
And killing death.
Agamidae +

Congrats on 400k! You are definitely my favorite video essayist, with Folding Ideas coming in close second. I'm always happy to see your content in my feed!
Lindsay, you always look so great in your videos, and that eyeliner is STUNNING. Really makes your eyes pop! Also, congrats on all your success! I've been a fan since 2012ish but the videos you've done this past year are by far my favorites. Can't wait for more in the future! 😊
love your videos, lindsay. congrats on 400k subs!
"I'm really lazy"
Says the woman who creates really well thought out and in depth essays.
The Channel Awesome situation is fucked and it sucks that Nostalgia Critic is descending into squalor, but we still got people like Lindsay, Lewis Lovhaug, and Dominic Smith out of it, so there's that to be thankful for.
now i REALLY want you to ruin prince of egypt for me
your one of the most fabulous channels on youtube! thank you for all the amazing vids!
I rewatch UNHhhh on a regular basis, one of the best things on youtube ever. Also congrats on 400k !
I'm an atheist and honestly I've always felt like The Prince of Egypt is a masterpiece. Still the best thing Dreamworks ever made.
I'm a Punjabi Spice Princess, aren't we all special
"I was so sick of 50 Shades of Grey" she says, with the books glaring at us over her right shoulder.
Yeah? Of course she has to have it to understand it. I think Lindsay is one of those persons who watches/reads something before making bold statements about it.
Not to mention the context in which she said it was targeted towards its proliferation as critique material rather than the book itself. I mean that hot garbage has been debated to death, let it rest.
You're amazing Lindsay ....I've been following you since 2007 and I'm so wowed by your content
I'm so glad UNHhhh is back. *You have the power*
@Lindsay Ellis make videos about weebshit. I've spent my life on the internet and it's the only thing that makes me feel alive
The last line of that movie... bothers me.
Hakajin I literally was thinking about that scene when she mentioned that!
Fopenplop she's never really been that good with anime honestly. it feels like she respects it a biiiiiit more nowadays but its definitely not something shed ever do a video on
I went on the Guardians ride for the first time the other night and you are absolutely correct, Lindsay. It’s a dream, the whole thing.
LINDSAY YOU ARE A FILM QUEEN! YOUR EYELINER IS ON POINT AND SO IS YOUR FILM THEORY
The opening to Natalie's the Golden One video? With the surprise flex edit? Art. ART
The Prince of Egypt movie comment has me shook.... how do we go on?
The Old Testament plays so much like mythology anyway.. I thought it lended itself quite well to the format. I’d love to see her do an essay on it.
you used to be my brother~
That's because the Bible IS mythology.
MediMedusa
They addressed this in the opening of the film. It’s not just for organized religion. It’s for the millions of people of faith no matter what variety it is since the story is talked about in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
Besides, it ultimately is an awesome movie because it doesn’t have a good guy or a bad guy: just broken people with parental expectations
There is a great deal of sensitivity in that film to everyone’s humanity.
Congrats! I’ve been around since the nostalgia chick days, but I like the new content better
Your content deserves way more than 400k subscribers
YOURE AMAZING ! @Lindsay Ellis you’re so academically and spiritually correct it HURTS. You’re essays and videos give me life. They help me. think about life and my life loving film the narratives the offer to its audience. Thanks for your wisdom and love for film. YOURE A TREASURE🤩
