Gear: Yamaha THR10X
I’m a guitarist from the UK, completely self-taught and have been playing since I was 12. I play Hard Rock including AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and more modern influences including Alter Bridge and Steel Panther.
I graduated with a First Class (BA Hons) Music Business Degree from the University of Sussex, studied it at BIMM Manchester.
At uni, I helped arrange a masterclass for Ozzy Osbourne/Firewind guitarist Gus G and played an important part in the preparations for a Guthrie Govan clinic. Personal highlights of mine include playing on stage with Steel Panther in January 2018 and when I got the opportunity to spend the day with Steve Vai on his Passion and Warfare Anniversary Tour.
Since launching the channel properly in 2015, I am very pleased to have received positive comments from Sam Coulson (Asia), Michael Starr (Steel Panther), Rick Graham, Henning Basse (Firewind Lead Vocalist) and other notable figures in the guitar world.
I teach subscribers complex rock licks, provide other tuition videos and demonstrate exciting kit and equipment for shops such as RichTone Music in Sheffield, Sounds Great Music in Cheadle.
I’m a connoisseur of fine guitars and I am very proud to be known on UA-cam for being a user of Charvel Guitars, Yamaha THR amps, EVH Gear and Stormshadow Guitarworks.

love the trower lead work just awesome the whole video really!!
Cameron, I totally agree, the JB and the '59 are my faves too. One pickup like too is the SD George Lynch Screamin' Demon" . The "Custom, Custom" is also great as well.
Cam..I follow you for quite a long time now..i is amazing to see your progress on the guitar...recently you turned into a killer player...very natural and relaxed...very nice...cheers
amazing playing and amazing tone.
Another great video! I really should have gotten a Jb for the bridge of my les Paul. Got a DiMarzio Super Distortion and while it sounds great for heavy prog riffing, a JB i had on a charvel sounded so much better at some Iron Maiden or Van Halen.
Also, i must really thank you for your riffs videos. They really work, much better than any other i have tried, and i feel like i'm doing some progress again!
I have an SD Custom '78 i love - and recently picked up a Jalen '78 and I have to say it is awesome as well - lots and lots of mids on both of those - I have and love the SD 59 as well on the bridge, it's great when you want a bit more of a mid scooped sound with crystal clear high end.
Had 920d build me a custom loaded pick guard for my 2017 Fender American Special with DiMarzio HS-3 in neck and middle with HS-2 in the bridge. It also has a 500k speed volume pot ,5 way switch and master coil tap.The variety of tones in one guitar is amazing. Can go from full on shred to country/blues with the coil tap.
I threw a '78 Custom by Seymour Duncan in a Kramer '84 Baretta and it's... just godly
Very cool! I am about to return my '84 Baretta and am on the fence between 3 types. Pariah Pickups Pasadena Black, Duncan Custom 78 and the Arcane Brownbucker. What do you think? I am primarily after the Diver Down / Fair Warning era tone. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
I’m about to do the same thing
What volume pot you got pared with that?
@@Bad_Phil you should get the pasadena white then.. look for jason deraps with his germino 55 for van halen sounds.
@@arminh8428 I went with the Pasadena Black for the Baretta and the Pasadena White for my B&W 1st album replica 🤘🏻
Note to all guitarists: try to make your A power chords sound like the ones at the start of this video haha. Great video sir!
Yup, that’s my favorite combo as well. JB & Jazz. I like other pickups but these just ring out with even harmonics wether I’m using my Digitech RP1000 ( Mesa patch ) through my Katana on the acoustic setting or my 100 watt Blackstar tube head through my 4X12 greenback. Just a reliable winner. They just have a magic for me that other pickups don’t. With a Floyd Rose, just leave me on a desert island. Also, 3 minutes in this video with the EMG set I must quote Carlos Santana commenting on Ray Gomez’s playing. I think He said it’s like eating fresh watermelon on a summer day. That’s how that amazing collection of notes & tone that you display give me a beautiful windy beach at sundown feeling. I appreciate your input. Thank you
Ever tried the evh Frankenstein humbucker?
Luka have you? I was hopin he’d back to back with a Wolfie. I have a Frankie in my Les Paul. Have mixed feelings.
I like the jb's. EMG's are my favorite sounding pickups though. I also like Diamond guitars pickups. They have a nice low end thump. Closest Seymour Duncan pickup to them is the sh-5 Seymour Duncan custom. I tried the Fishman fluence at guitar center. To me they sounded like emgs.
I died of laughter when you said fender strats have that "quack" sound😂(5:42)
Haha, I know it's an odd way of describing the tones in a strat but it's how I hear one or two of the positions
Cam - you are among Rocco Pezzin and (Uncle) Ben Eller as my favorite UA-cam guitarists. I love your playing!!! Very inspiring!!! Thanks for the entertainment.
Thank you very much. I speak to Rocco quite a bit. I have spoken to Ben a couple of times. Great guys!
Would be cool to have you three create a video where you all jam together. Thanks for the reply!
@@wizaxed That'd be really cool! Rocco and I were putting something together about 18 months ago with Robert Baker but then it just died. Not really sure what happened in the end. All of my parts were finished. :)
Time to bust some balls!!! :)
@@CameronCooper is there any chance of bringing it back? You Rocco and Robert doing a collab will be one of the best things on youtube, EVER.
I have the neon pink Charvel San Dimas and it’s 6 pack of sound is just hard to beat. So versatile. And the neck feels great.
I tried a wolfgang at one of my local guitar stores and was just enthralled!! I love the pickups as they are super warm, but way more clear then the Evo pickups I’ve been using.im going to get that wolfgang for Christmas
Very similar to the Custom Custom from Seymour Duncan and both much better than the JB imo...
Would you recon they are good for queen songs?because I don’t live near any guitar shops and I want to play songs other than van halen and all I’ve heard on one is van halen
I’ve got a couple of Charvels the ash body tele style like this video but with hard tale and maple neck and the JB/59 combo is amazing, my other Charvel has the distortion set in which is abit brighter sounding but my favourite all time is the pearly gates +, that is a fantastic pickup again paired with the 59 in the neck.
i have being trying lots of hambuckers in my life and finally after many trials with sucessufull or less i returned to my old vintage JB seymour duncan ... all are at least good pickups but no one is flexable as the jb ... thats my 2 cents about this :)
The Frankenstein is my pref.and dimarzio s.d oh and the slash pickups sound great
I love the JB and 59 for Super Strats and SuperTeles. I love SD Whole Lotta Humbuckers in Les Paul type guitars. I have a set of Wolfgangs in my EVH, and they sound very good too. That is only for Gibson Style Humbuckers. There are a lot of other styles of pickups I have in my other guitars, and that is the reason why I have my other guitars.
My new Charvel DK 24, came with a full shred in the bridge. .. it wasn't cutting it... I dropped a JB trembucker and the guitar has a soaring, singing tone with rich mids that I love. The ZW EMG tandem are also very good.
The Dimarzio Tone Zones, in Ibanez are also great
full shred is weak on bass, which kills the whole point of using a humbucker
The JB is pretty much the ''golden standard'' on hotrodded Humbuckers, along with the Super Distortion by DiMarzio, this thing is on the market for 40 years and has been used by pretty much everybody at one point. You can't go wrong with it,splits also very well.
Put it with a Jazz or '59 neck and you have a versatile set,can can handle all types of styles.
Hey cam. What’s your favorite sounding guitar out of the collection? I personally love the white charvel , The ash charvel, and the insane sounding storm shadow.
I play 7 string... Seymour Duncan made me a special pickup...I tend to go very dark...and low mids...since I tune down to A......
Next pickups are Nezul and Sentinel pickups....I am a shredder of course, but very different
Saw one of your videos playing a Wolfgang Std and was REALLY impressed but you say you prefer JB ?
Back in the mid 90's
A friend picked up a lefty joe pass gibson with a JB. Man I had to sit for 30 minutes
And refinger chords and scales downup and played that thing about an hour and a half!!! That pickup rocks! And back off the volume and cleans up. Years back I had the bill lawrence
L500? And it screamed!!!!!! But sounded like chicken cluck country backed off. I regret not keepin it too. Xl 90 too.
I finally got ahold of a lefty Japanese 2010 lefty EVH Special. IMMEDIATELY I realized it is one of the best guitars I have owned through the last 34 years. It has the USA EVH Wolfgangs in it. One of the best I have ever heard. I have spent thousands trying TONS of different ones. Apart from all the boutiques you have probably heard of and major manufacturers, I want to draw special attention to Lindy Fralin. Check him out if you have mind to ever. Also, you are a great inspiration. Thank you very much for what you do man. CHEERS from Austin Tx. :D
I have a jb/jazz combo in in my soloist, it’s a pretty heavy setup. I think that’s basically what mustaine’s signature thrash factors are, just overwound. I really wanna try them when I get another Jackson
Had that combo on my Jackson RR3. I still have the jb on my bridge (that pickup has real balls to it), but wasn't a big fan of the jazz neck pickup. Swapped it out with an Invader neck pickup. Very interesting combo that is
Wow !!!! Killer tone ! What delay are you using ??? Hello from san Antonio TX ! usa ! Earth !! 😁👍
I modded a dimarzio Fred with a double thick alnico 5 magnet. Any of you that have a Fred should try it. I like it a lot.
Yes, let´s talk shop!
Not sure what you mean there. :)
Hey Cameron you make those charvels sing! Did you ever try a Seymour Duncan George Lynch screamin demon ? If so what's your take on it?
Cameron - how do you find the EVH pickups? I prefer the sound of my Chinese Wolfgang which uses the US pups. My new Mexico wolfie has slightly duller ones IMO
I believe they are different in the US models now - a better unit. I also understand that the frankie strats use the cheaper pups too...
Richard Boodell The Mexican model EVH pickups just don’t give enough of a punch in my opinion. Well the Bridge doesn’t in my opinion. I got my self the Frankenstein pickup and it is a whole different monster. Great ratings on it too.
What output is the frankenstein? Is it a higher output then the jb? What do you think of the frankenstein pickup?
What do you think of the seymour duncan 78s?
His guitars are players and all beautiful
What do you think of Lace Sensor buckers (red, red) set's when chasing the EVH tone?
Cameron if you get a chance try bare knuckle rebel yell “steve Stevens” very hi output humbuckers my knaggs ssc1 has them and they are unreal.
Awesome Video! Have you ever tried out Chapman Guitars? 😀
I tried a really old model a long time ago and I didn't like it..but I hear they're much better now. They certainly look the part!
Yeah the JB is iconic but for me to make it even better try a JB/59 hybrid,
This p'u is pure old EVH sounding. you take one coil JB(i used the stud pole side) and one coil 59b(screw side) and the result is stellar!
It is still very JB like but has less output, cleans up much better, has much better definition/clarity overall and just sounds old VH. Duncan sells the 59/Custom version of this and it is also really good but i prefer the one coil from a JB for that trademark midrange and harmonics of the JB.
Hey Cam, I'm thinking about ordering some premium Warmoth Neck and body and building my own EVH Bumblebee. I just checked out the EVH website and didn't realize how many different varieties they have. Frankie, Frankie plus, Wolfgang and then there's Symour Duncan's Custom shop EVH series as well. Have you compared any of these pickups? My favorite VH era & sound is anything from 78 to 84.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Cheers!
I'd buy the Pariah Pasadena White pickup and then go mad getting the songs just right. I don't use any of the same gear that Ed used in any of his rigs. I learned that the key to getting the Van Halen sound is just by playing the songs to the best of your ability rather than trying to use every piece of gear he had.
How about the old Vintage Jackson J90C bridge pickups that they put in Charvels and Jacksons in the 80's? Those are some vicious bastards (in a good way) 😊
Here! They are fuckin killer
Amp question for you. What about the Boss Katana amps vs the Yamaha THR? I am shopping and not really knowledgeable enough to know why one might excel over the other. Thanks.
I'd recommend the THR10X personally. It's an incredibly versatile product and the tone speaks for itself
Only coming across this now, really torn between an EVH Wolfgang and a Kramer 86. There is something special about the Wolfgang pickups where the JB with a split coil is just a great weapon. I suppose if you were looking for a metal, hardcore, beefy kind of sound, what would you go for?
Wolfgang. Case closed
JB is an overly compressed sounding pickup especially with gobs of gain! Much better options out there imo...
The JB really is a great pickup that sounds great in many guitars?
Would be cool if we could hear them without, the effects and reverb . But still was great 👍
I love the wolfgang pickups but the jb is probably my favorite. It has sounded great in every guitar I've had except for my kramer baretta vintage which I'm still looking for a pickup for. For some reason my baretta sounds terrible with it. Just very flat and muddy sounding. I can't tell if it's the jb or if that's just how the jb sounds in a baretta.
Duncan black winter
There's JB jr for strat too, Cameron. :) It's just ceramic magnet, normal JB is alnico 5.
www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/jb-jr-strat-bridge
I like low (vintage) output pickups more than modern high output because those are clear and there's no extra gain to mix things, then almost all overdrive comes from amp or pedal, not pickup. Sometimes high output is nice if playing more very heavy stuff.
Thank you! If you like vintage output, you'll love the links I've left in the description. I think you'd love McNelly or Oil City!
Going to buy my first charvel in october because of you. Im going to get a pro mod style 1 like your pink one with a jb and 59 set and i'm considering swapping the jb for a evh wolfgang humbucker. Would you reccomend swapping or leaving it as it is? Thank you so much for uploading =)
I wouldn't recommend it. Not because it's a bad decision because it probably isn't. I've never done that and I don't see why you'd need to. The JB nails it!
Thanks for answering! i'm still trying to decide whether to put a d-tuna on the floyd or keep it floating =)
Jumping in here, the Charvel Pro Mod style 1's with Floyd trems are all recessed from what I can see. They're not going to work well due to the recessed Floyd, even if you block it. This is because they sit fairly low in the body and don't really allow for engaging / disengaging ease of the d-tuna. I think you might need to go to a US or custom shop one because they seem to offer top mount floyds. I'll defer to Cameron on this though, as he might have a different take.
Just to clarify - the floyds on the Charvel Pro Mod style 1's work great, however just not with a d-tuna. I didn't want anyone to think I was badmouthing the floyds on them
This is true. You would either need a top mount Floyd or would need to route a 'channel' on the low E side to accommodate the protruding D-Tuna (if Floyd is recessed). D-Tuna's are excellent if you play both E and Drop D tuning...you don't need to bring two guitars!! But I know we all love to have more guitars...it's just carrying them all to rehearsal or gigs that sucks!!!
JB..JB...JB...JB..!!JB!!!...JB..JB..
had me cracking up dude! !
78 model
Can you suggest me best of the best pickups for playing Eddie Van Halen style ...tapping and heavy stuff
Either Wolfgang or Seymour Duncan 78
Seymour Duncan sh-11
I like alnico 2 pickups thru a marshall fat tone 👍
Do you prefer the Floyd 1000 or 2000 I’m buying a charvel today so cals have the 2000 and san dimas the 1000
They're both the same. The 2000 is black and the 1000 is chrome
Cameron Cooper thanks I pulled the pin got the 2018 san dimas Black with gold hardware delivered next week thanks for all the info they should give u an endorsement there new colours are wicked too
Nice amp
What about the SH-10? (SD Full Shred)
It's good!
Duncan black winter
JB vs EVH Wolfgang Pickup (bridge position). Thoughts? Comments?
Wolfgang pickup wins in my book. There's more of everything aha
Any opinion on the Duncan Screamin’ Demon?
I have one in an old basswood ibanez roadstar. The Screamin D is a moderate output, it also has a midrange boosted eq curve.
the best pickups for me are single coil
That's just fine :)
The Fishmans are the real deal.
3 of my Charvels have Jbs in them...had to put 250 pots in them though...sounded way better
I'm still wondering where you get the cash to buy all that gear...
Mommeee. Dadeeeee. Or Cocaine
Who said he buys it? Lots of people are sent the gear free to demo it to the masses.. helps stir sales for company.
What model is that Fender acoustic behind you?
It's a Fender resonator. They're discontinued now. Never been featured in a video aha.
Cool beans! Perhaps it's time for that video!! Thanks for the quick response!! Love your channel!
but there are two emg pickup in your charvel so cal
That's correct
What charvel model is it in the intro?
Charvel San Dimas Style 2 in natural Ash
@@CameronCooper thanks!
have you ever play jackson gus g's signature guitar
Nope but I might be playing his actual one next month
@@CameronCooper esp gus g signature vs jackson gus g signature
Jackson Gus G Signature :)
@@CameronCooper why
@@liys540 Although in the grand scheme of things they're the same guitar, I just prefer the way it looks with all the pin stripes etc
The YJM stacked singles are awesome and also the SSL3's are epic....(they rival any humbuckers for balls and clarity).
Great videos! What are your amp settings on the EVH 50 watt?
It's not being used in videos. I use a Yamaha THR10X :)
Blasphemy! 😂
What are your preferred settings when you do use the EVH?
@@afh0831 I am not sure to be honest I've not plugged it in for months
Holy fuck Cam you gained like 700 subs in less than a week! That's insane! I'm so happy that your channel is finnaly getting the exposure it deserves. I really hope one day you will be at the top with the great musicians on youtube such as rick graham robert baker etc, and i truly believe it's only a matter of time😉
Cheers
Hi sir. What is ur fav overdrive and distortion pedal sir?
I wouldn't know I've never owned one
No love for Bare Knuckle Pickups? They're in all my guitars.
Bare knuckle pickups are amazing
They're good but I've never played a guitar with them in.
JB nad 59, best ROCK combination.
Wait. But what is your favourite pickup? :P
Distortion > JB
You have like 90 guitars but still have acne. Damn dude, you are living the dream.
I don't have 90 guitars and no longer have acne, I'm in hell.
SO YOURS PREFERS ARE JB
This opinion is dated now. I've found my new favourites since. Pariah Blackheart and Leone
