    thank you for doing this one. I just bought a silex as I've been researching for awhile and finally pulled the trigger, nothing like a nice gritty video to make a guy feel good about his purchase. I'll be going with the medium stove per your recommendations once I get enough funds to pull it off again hopefully before my November elk hunt

    That Hilleberg Niak is classified as a 3-season on account of its fabric, 20 D ripstop nylon, and is part of Hillebergs "Yellow Label" 3-season line. Their "Red Label" and "Black Label" all-season tents are constructed of 30 D and 40 D ripstop nylon, respectively. As you said, their "Yellow Label" tents are likely to withstand the conditions a hunter is likely to find in any season, as their tents are designed with mountaineering in mind for use in extreme high alpine environments, and their all season tents need to survive a severe winter storm/blizzard. One is not liable to find any game in such environs in the winter, with even mountain goat leaving the high alpine to avoid such conditions.
    As far as I know, Hilleberg does not produce any tents with a stove jack factory installed.

      @@GrittyGearAndPodcast No problem, thanks for the through review of your tents! Really like the look of the Silex, it reminds me of the Durston X-mid I use, but the zipper free design looks like it makes it far easier to set up as a glassing shelter.
      On a separate note, you mentioned not using the pyramid when it's been snowed in and frozen, because it would make rocks for sealing the perimeter inaccessible. I'd just like to note that if there is sufficient snow, you can use the snow to the same effect as the rocks. Some pyramids even have attached snow skirts for this purpose (Black Diamond Mega Snow for example). If the snow is deep enough, you can even dig out the area under the tent to increase the living area. I love using floorless tents on multi-day ski tours for this reason. Obviously would need to add a snow shovel to the kit for this, but that's a pretty useful tool to have in such conditions.

  • @lifson22
    @lifson22 6 місяців тому

    Great video, love the details, and real world discussion, but I have to say, calling the Hilleberg a 3 season because it doesn't have a stove jack is ridiculous. People have been camping in extreme weather, well below zero, and above treeline in extreme wind long before consumer hot tents were a thing. A stove to dry stuff out is amazing, and the extra comfort it provides is definitely great for hanging out in nasty weather, but my -25f western mountaineering bag is what will actually keep me warm when things get extreme. A stove in those conditions has to be fed constantly, so relying on that and not bringing a proper sleep system is a risk. Nothing wrong with stove tents, but a stove is not the determining factor for a 4th season tent.

    Great insight gritty, being from Australia 🇦🇺 I like the full protection of a tent ⛺️ and floor. To many creepy crawleys and snakes 🐍. I guess a stove box would be a game changer, heaps of wood and timber in the high country here to burn 🔥 haha

    @Brian Call: Gritty, if I were to only buy one stove, would the Seek Outside Large stove be too much for the Silex? My worry is that if I also get a Cimarron one day, that a medium stove would not be big enough. Thanks for your input!

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  2 роки тому +2

      The large is on the verge of being too big for the silex, but we have ran the large in the silex. You just have to be very cautious of how close the shelter is to the stove and you have to make sure the stove jack is around the pipe and the material of the tent is not touching or close to it. The large sure is nice in the cimarron.

      Hey Rick! I've seen Billy Molls use a Helleberg-style dome tent AND a tipi. Billy took the tipi down when the weather was harsh and ran the tipi and stove when the weather permitted. But I've also seen Cole Kramer use a dome-style tent (4 season) WITH a stove jack on Kodiak Island. Some dudes in Alaska buy a heavy duty dome tent from Cabelas or similar and then pay to have a stove jack added to the shelter. Ideally, a heavy duty dome tent with a stove jack is ideal. We used just such a tent when I was on Kodiak with Cole Kramer--you can see the tent setup in this film here: ua-cam.com/video/3g3g0mp483E/v-deo.html
      We were camped on Kodiak when the tsunami hit a few years back--the weather was CRAZY! But Cole's Cabela's dome with the stove withstood the storms.

      Firstly, we try to setup our shelter where the ground has some grass or is relatively high and doesn’t collect water. Next, our Tyvek ground cloth covers the ground and provides a barrier against the ground. And finally, we get our tent super hot with the wood stove and we dry out the ground quite a bit.

More room is always much better than not having enough. The Redcliff would be pretty tight since it sounds like all of you men are taller and bigger than we are 😆.

      We use the u-turn mostly, but occasionally we still use the regular. I think it's pretty great, but if I'm planning on going with 2 guys, I would take the cimarron all day long over it.

    How do you counter heavy rains with the floor less shelters?

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  2 роки тому +1

      Through many crazy rain and wind storms, I've had to trench out around the tipi 1 time. The biggest things is to make sure you aren't setting your shelter up in a bowl. Even flat ground seems to shed the water off around the tipi.

      @donaldleeiii3624 Рік тому

      Happy to hear that. Used a Cim. Light this season and rain creating a river running through the tent or snow blowing in under the sides was/is a huge concern for me.

    Great video! Would you take the DCF Cimarron or Silex solo into the super steep Idaho country? Thought you guys took the Cimarron but could only pitch on the ridge tops. Thanks!

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  2 роки тому +2

      I’d take the Silex solo if it’s steep and I want to stay mobile and sleep anywhere I want. But if the area has a lot of camping spots for the DCF Cimarron to fit, I would bring it instead of the Silex. But both are excellent.

    Thanks for the great video guys. How do you deal with condensation in the tipis? Even while running the stove I still wake up in the morning with condensation on the walls and my bag is a little damp, never enough that it doesn’t dry by the next night though. Is that a big issue for you or do you just learn to deal with it?

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  2 роки тому

      It's not a huge issue for us. Most of the time, as long as it isn't very windy, we can raise the tipi up a little and get the bottom off the ground a couple inches allowing air to flow under it. Also, we will leave the door cracked a tiny bit if we need. Another option, is to get a bigger stove. I'm not sure what size you have.

      Depends on the size of the tent. We use the medium on the small tents and a large or an XL large in our tipis. We always go one size up from what is usually recommended.

      Are you taking about the white matt that’s similar to Tyvek? It’s great. Maybe a touch more protective than what tyvek provides but also a smidge heavier. But if you’re talking about their brown silnylon ground cloth it’s no good-you’ll get a home in your air mattress.

    Is there ever a concern for ticks in shelter?
    Watch a lot of spring bear hunts with guys picking off ticks all day- that reason alone would make me lean toward nest or screen.
    Wondering if you are ever concerned with that

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  2 роки тому

      Ticks can be thick sometimes and they’re annoying. But we still won’t use a shelter with a floor-we perform regular “tick checks” and we pick the ticks off of ourselves. To this day, I have not been gotten by a tick.

Just the 2 of us- and so I need a shelter that will comfortably sleep 2. And I think for her sake it’s gonna need screen of some kind. I’m leaning toward the tipi with a nest…. So your video helps.
      As for no tick bites- thats impressive. I do some part time taxidermy and get a lot of bucks from southern states- covered in hundreds of ticks. Been hit 1/2 dozen times over the years.
