Super Duty helpful. Just had to have the beast towed because of broken seperator relief connection. Ordering part per your advice! Thanks! 2019 f350 etc…..
I ran into the jam you are referring too Saturday after work 🙄 Drain valve snapped off and it was after 2pm. No one had the valve in stock and both Ford dealerships were closed here in Sarasota fL. SPE billet valve in the mail. Truck is sitting for a couple days 🙃🔫
I like to drain my filters every 5,000 miles. Some people do it more often others less often. I typically get my fuel at the same station so I know what is going into my truck...5,000 works for me. Thank you.
Many Thanks for the video and showing me how to swap it out. I have 2 more ordered and should arrive in a week or so. Well I had heard of getting another one of these but thought why should I buy one since why would it fail since I hardly use it and my trucks pretty new. Well guess what? My 2018 F350 6.7 failed last night. Today cost me a hour long round trip cab ride to the nearest Ford dealer. Last night while in a Campground and having a hard time getting moist wood started by the Campfire I decided to do a slight drain and use the diesel for helping get the logs started. Well when I went to screw it back into the closed position it just fell out. Both plastic pegs were broken off. WHAT A BAD DESIGN! A $5 Ford part that disables my 65K truck after only 2 years and very little use. I intend to send the broken piece to Ford and let them know what I think of it in no uncertain terms. My last truck a 2017 F150 had a leaking plastic oil pan after only 2K miles. I am done with Fords after this truck and going to give Chevy a try next time. I have at least a dozen Ford products over my lifetime and it seems they never learn and are now going backwards.
Good info, but you should consider the SPE billet aluminum fuel drain valve. Eliminates the plastic tabs so you won’t need several back up plastic plugs!
I broke the black plastic grove one of the yellow pins slide in. The plug sits tight when it’s in the closed position, but falls out when I open it. Is the housing easily replaceable?
Lower housing with the 5 captured screws sells for $170, entire housing for $185… it is easy to replace, just unplug lower supply and reinstall bottom housing with the 5 screws - 8mm if I recall
Hi...I have not tried that one as of yet...but I have heard good things about it. I think it would be good peace of mind to have a quality part. I still carry 2-3 extra yellow ones with me...they are cheap to replace when / if they break.
How did you get the fuel to stop flowing without the plug? Mine just flows and flows diesel. I reseated the plug but it feels like its attached on one pin/one side. I'm kinda scared to drive it.
zfilmmaker man I hope your plug is not broken. It will drain a couple quarts of fuel before it starts to slow down. If it’s more than that then you have a problem. How can I help you. Just let me know and I will do my best.
My driveway where it meets the road (apron) is higher, I change oil there because it lifts the truck up and makes working under it easier. Maybe the angle had something to do with it? I hope at least. I turned the plug and it drained a good bit, I’d say a gallon and a half and kept on going. Then I noticed the plug fell into the jug. Not a good sign. I was able to push it back but its not tight like it was. I ordered replacement plugs… thanks for this video btw, I ordered a bunch! If your offer is genuine haha…how about a video showing step by step how to release the 3 different quick release plugs on the fuel filter under hood. Nobody has done that yet.
Jason Esterly Hey Jason. If everything is working correctly then about 20 ounces should drain out and it should stop. Honestly you should only need to drain out 5-10 ounces max because any water collected in the separator will be at the bottom so it will drain out first. Hope that helps.
Hey there...sorry, I just saw this question. I am now doing drain intervals at 7,500 miles. I get my oil analyzed by Black Stone and so far as I move each oil change out in mileage the reports keep coming back with lower than average wear metals. So who knows how far I will go...but right now I'm at 7,500 miles using AMSoil. Thank you.
Did anyone get an excessive amount of extra fuel from draining their separator on the frame? I ended up running my battery's down priming the pump so many times because I got 2 to 3 gallons of extra you will out of the something must be wrong
Actually some people have reported this on their trucks. The solution they came up with was to drain the separator when the truck was less than 1/4 tank full of fuel. I have a 2017 and have never had this issue with mine but it is not uncommon. Priming the fuel system should not run down your battery though...just because you got 2-3 gallons out of the system doesn't mean it will need 2-3 gallons to reprime. In the real world 3-4 cycles should reprime...doing a few extra is for insurance and to ensure extra air gaps are removed or diminished.
Dang Dude - you are such a Repeater. We are not ignorant. Don't have to be told the same thing 14 times. You took 15 minutes to say something that we can grasp in about 4 or 5 minutes MAX.
One of the best videos on fuel maintenance I have seen. Excellent advice!!
Great video, thanks for making this and showing all the details. Now going out to change my broken fuel filter drain valve, wish me luck.
How did you remove drain valve
I really appreciate the video just changed mine this weekend and I barely turned it and it broke trying to see were to purchase a new one now

There is a company called SPE that sells a replacement in billet
mdm-performance.com/product/spe-billet-fuel-drain-valve-17-19-6-7/
With a billet plug you could break the fuel filter housing. I would rather break a 3.98 cent plug

@@JmF250 aluminum against plastic. Over time the housing will fail against that billet plug.

Reading through these comments, water is heavier.....so drain an ounce and shut it off. If no water in that, you shouldn't have to drain anymore.
Thanks!

Any thoughts on the after market billet drain plug?

@@AdventuringToday I ordered (2) extras today. Your right your stuck without em.
Thanks again.
Great video sir, well explained
SPE makes a billet drain valve

I tried to drain my seperator and it never stopped running out. Filled up a bucket and stopped. What could that be?

I went to drain mine and the plug fell out. Same thing those little tabs are broke
Great video. I have 6k miles on my truck and I plan to drain the fuel thanks to your video. Thanks. BTW, how often do you change your oil. curious

I change mine every 5,000 on my 2016 F450. I also ordered an aluminum drain plug for my fuel filter. It’s different than the 2017.
Smart to drain those filters!!! Wish we had an aluminum one on the 2017+.
Adventuring Today SPE Diesel sells just what you’re looking for. It’s stout!! Highly recommend.

Walmart near me would not accept used motor oil with fuel mixed in. The employee sniffs all the jugs before accepting them.
put some dog/cat crap under the lid before you put the lid on the jug next time. At the least it would be a good laugh.
It’s not new on the 2017. They have it on the 2008 6.4 too and they all break and you can get metal one just pricey
Great video. thanks!
buy an aluminum cnc machined plug, screw the plastic one.
Nice tip, thanks!
Thanks for head's up . Mine is due approx 6Km, going to get me that plug .
Smart move...that plastic is pretty brittle. I ordered another one today and it was $2.99 plus shipping. Cheap insurance.
