@@sylvianapier7800 if you pay at the pump with a credit or debit card, you do not have to choose how much before you start pumping . You just start pumping it, and continue to pump it until you choose to stop. You can watch the counter on the pump and manually stop at a desired dollar amount. Or you can just keep pumping until it’s full and stops on its own, and you will pay for however much you pumped. If you pre-pay inside the store, you will need to choose how much money you want to pay. Then the pump will automatically stop when it reaches that dollar amount that you prepaid. If you pre-pay for more than you used, you can go back in and get a refund for the extra.
I’ve been driving for a bit now (2 years) and have never personally filled up anywhere, and I still think it’s crazy that it doesn’t seem like they teach how to fill up the gas tank at gas stations. It’s something everyone will inevitably have to do if you are driving yourself around, and knowing about the different types of gas and the basics of a how-to video is just silly in my opinion. That’s why it’s great to have concise and helpful videos like this!
Thank you so much! I am a new driver and have only pumped gas into my car a few times with my parents. I have never done it by myself before and have been so anxious about it. This video actually helped so much, I really appreciate it!
This may seem like a simple video but it’s very helpful. My husband usually puts my gas so I’ve never had to do it until now. I don’t want to look stupid so it’s nice to have this video.
Thank you for this, I recently got my first car. I’m still surviving off the gas from the dealership and dreading getting my own gas. This was very informative.
Hi, I’m 20 years old and recently bought my first car. Both my parents have DUI’s and got their licenses revoked the minute I turned 16 and was legally able to get behind a wheel... When I turned 18, I finally was able to take myself to the driver’s test without parental permission, and while I got my license, it took a lot longer for me to get a car. Because of my parent’s substance abuse problems, I moved out right at 18, and it was hard to save for a car while I was paying for an apartment all on my own, but eventually, I got there, and exactly a week ago today, I bought my first car... My coworkers have watched me try to park and said things to me before like “who the hell taught you how to drive?” and it’s too embarrassing for me to explain my past and the reason for my lack of driving experience... They laughed when I told them I didn’t know how to pump gas, but I’ve never done it before, and it’s been 5 or so years since I watched my parents do it, and even then I wasn’t really paying attention, I was just in the car with them while they did it... I’ve been so stressed about getting gas but I thought to look up a video and you don’t know how grateful I am. This has made me feel so much more confident. On behalf of everyone who lacks their parents in their life, thank you so much for stepping up 🩷 we appreciate you so much
Glad the video helped! Congratulations on pushing through and working hard and getting to where you are. I know what it’s like to grind and climb your way up. It means more when it’s harder. Hi just wanna ask. I'm a new driver so please be patient with my dmb question 😅 1. So I don't need to put in how much I need? It will automatically just choose, say $20, for one pump? 2. What if I don't want a full tank. say, I just want $10. Do i hold it and stop pumping once it reaches $10? Thank you so much. xoxo
No problem! IF YOU PAY AT THE PUMP WITH A CARD AND DO NOT GO INSIDE TO PAY: If you hold the handle with your hand, or use the kickstand to hold, the handle, it will automatically stop pumping when your tank is full. You don’t have to fill it all the way up. If you want to pump a specific amount of money ($10), you will have to watch the meter and manually stop pumping when you reach the desired amount of money. IF YOU PREPAY INSIDE THE BUILDING WITH CASH OR CARD: To pay with cash, you will usually have to go inside and pay the cashier first to activate the pump. If you want to fill up your tank, this will be tricky, because you don’t know exactly how much money it will cost to fill up your tank. But you will have to choose an amount of money to pay. For example, let’s choose $10. When you go outside to the pump and start pumping gas, it will automatically turn off at $10 (or whatever amount you choose to pre pay inside). They require pre-pay inside when using cash, because they don’t want people to fill up their tank with gas and leave without paying. I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, just let me know!

If you prepay with a card, the difference will go back into the card. If you prepay with cash, you can go back inside and get the difference back in cash.
I don’t even drive yet but I just felt like I should watch this. I’m definitely still nervous because honestly I don’t think I’d even know when to fill up the gas tank, or how often I’d need to.
You forgot to mention. Always look around before you get out. Many people are carjacked and robbed at stations now days. Have all doors locked no valuables in view. Check pump for skimmer. Always get a receipt in case gas is bad.
Hello my fellow anxiety-riddled individuals. I'm happy to report that everything went well at the pump. I pulled up, put the car in park, and turned it off. I pulled the car's lever to open the fuel door, got out, and unscrewed the fuel cap. I inserted my card and left it until the screen told me to remove it. I pushed the button to select regular unleaded, put the nozzle into the fuel tank, pulled the lever on the nozzle, and took advantage of the "catch" to hold the lever in place. It's obvious when the gas is flowing because you can feel the vibration. At this point I realized I wasnt sure if the nozzle would stay in place if I let go, so I stood there holding onto it hoping I didn't look to awkward to the person who had pulled up behind me. It eventually made a clunk sound and the gas stopped flowing which, again, was obvious due to the lack of vibration. I put the nozzle back in its place and selected "no" I don't want a receipt. I got back into the car and was about to turn it on but remembered I forgot to close the cap and fuel door 😑🤦. Got back out and closed them. There were some people walking around but I waited for the way to clear and didn't hit anyone or anything on the way out 👍
@@yobruh6029 Normally, you swipe your card at the pump to activate the pump. Then when you are done pumping gas, you will automatically be charged for the amount of gas you used. To prepay before you pump gas, typically no, you can’t prepay at the pump . You have to go inside and pay first, then they will activate the pump for you to use it. Sometimes there is an intercom at the pump and you can ask them to turn the pump on for you, then you go in and pay after you are done pumping gas. But, that is pretty rare. I haven’t seen that for several years.
well, today I learn something new that in the US, almost all gas pump got 1 nozzle and you had to choose by pushing the button/type of gas u need... while at where I live, we got multiple nozzles for different type of gas.
In general, credit cards are always safer. They have more protections, and if someone hacks it, it won’t drain your checking account. It will just temporarily affect your credit card balance until the fraud department reverses the charges. However, I’ve been using my debit card at the pump for decades with no issues. Swipe, insert, and tap. Also, credit cards do have tap pay. If yours doesn’t, and that’s what you want, get an updated card from your bank.
You can stop pumping gasoline any time you want to without filling it all the way up. The pump will show the amount pumped and the cost as you pump. When you reach the desired amount, you can stop pumping. If you are holding the handle lever with your hand to pump, just let go of the lever and it will stop pumping. If you are using the little kickstand to hold the lever so it will pump without holding it with your hand, squeeze the lever to release the kickstand, then let go of the lever to stop pumping.
Hello, question!! When I pump gas to my car, which is Honda pilot 2017 , I insert the nozzle in the port (it doesn’t have cap ) start pumping and after few seconds the nozzle stop and I have to pump again ,stop and pump again until I got full tank , I don’t know if I am doing it wrong or it the car ???
This is not normal, but can happen if there is a problem with the system. There is a blockage somewhere that is causing it to stop pumping before the gas tank is full. Usually a vent valve or charcoal canister. Until you fix the problem with your system, you will have to pump it very slowly, and just keep squeezing more in until your gas tank is full.
Mostly new drivers. I had multiple teenagers recommend that I make this video. But, when I was in the army many years ago, I knew two guys that were from Oregon who had to pump gas for the first time. It’s just one of those things that everybody takes for granted, but at some point, everybody does it for the first time.
To pay first, you need to go inside the building and pay the cashier, then go outside and pump gas, and the pump will automatically turn off when it reaches the amount that you pre-paid. If you want prepay inside, you will need to do some rough math. For example, if your tank is 10 gallons, and you want to fill it half way up, you need about 5 gallons. If gas is $3 per gallon, then 5 gallons will be about $15. You can also pay more than what you need to be safe, and go back in and get a refund for what you didn’t use. If you pay at the pump with a card, you do not per-pay. Before you start pumping, you insert your card and it authorizes it to verify that there’s money available, but it doesn’t charge you yet. As you pump gas, the display will show the cost of what you’ve pumped. You can stop pumping whenever you want to. When you’re done pumping gas and return the nozzle to the pump, then it charge your card for the final amount.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial is there not a keypad to type in the desired amount ? Fuel is expensive in most parts of the world and we just may need the correct volume
@@nikhilanandhegde4781 there is not a way to pre-select anything at the pump. There is just a display that shows how much you have consumed so far. It is up to you to watch it and stop pumping when you reach the desired amount. However, you can go inside the store and pre-pay first. Park next to the pump, then go inside the store and tell the cashier which pump you are using and how much you want to purchase and pay for it. Then, go back out and start pumping and the pump will automatically shut off when it reaches the amount that you prepaid for.
I learned how to drive in the Middle East and we all get our cars fueled by workers at the gas stations so I’ve never done it. If I go back to the US I won’t know how to do it so that’s why I’m here 😂
That’s correct. It authorizes your card before you start pumping to make sure you have enough money to pay, and it actually charges your card when you’re done pumping and put the nozzle back on the pump.
@@kellycroissant8015 that makes it more tricky for sure. You will have to do some basic math. If you have a 10 gallon tank for example, and it’s empty, you will need about 10 gallons to fill it up. If gas is three dollars per gallon, for example, then it will cost about $30 to fill it up. If you pre-pay too much in cash, you can get a refund for what you didn’t use after you’re done pumping. If you did not pre pay enough cash to fill it all the way up, the pump will automatically shut off at the dollar amount you prepaid. If you’re not sure, you could just put $10 or $20 in it, and that will get you around for a while.
It’s not required. But it would prevent unwanted people from getting into your car while you’re not paying attention if that’s something you’re concerned with. I lock my doors if I’m sitting inside my car, or if I leave it to go inside the building.
Been driving for going on 3 years now, and the pump would always click and shut off every little while. I've always felt like an idiot with people around, and after filling up today I was like, "Fuck it! I need to look this up!" I've come to the conclusion that I'll just use the little kickstand to fill up the tank since I usually do anyway, lol.
That’s no problem. You will have to go inside and pay. Most places will require you to go inside and pre pay. First park at the empty pump. It will have a number on it somewhere. Go inside and tell them what pump number you want to pre pay for. You will have to decide how much you want to spend on gas ahead of time and pay that amount. Let’s use $20 for example. Pay $20 in cash, then go back out to your vehicle and start pumping gas. The pump will automatically shut off when it reaches $20. Then you just put the pump away and leave. Some places will turn on the pump and let you fill up without prepaying, then you go inside after you’re done pumping gas and pay for the amount of gas that you pumped.
i had this situation where the pump would keep fueling and i couldn't get it to stop it happened but to take it out i had gas splattered all over my clothes what should i do if this situation occurs again
Was the handle on the nozzle still engaged with the little kick stand, and it didn’t automatically shut off when your gas tank was full? Or was gas still flowing out of the nozzle when the handle was off?
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial i used a credit card i wanted to only put 25 dollars in and i realized i couldn't get it to stop like i could with the other gas pumps
The gallons and cost are shown on the display of the gas pump as you pump the gasoline. They start at zero will increase as you continue to pump. You can monitor it and stop pumping any time if you reach a desired dollar amount or number of gallons. You don’t have to fill it all the way. The total quantity of gasoline that will be required to fill the gas tank all the way up is unknown. You can look up your vehicle’s specifications to see the capacity of your gas tank in gallons for a rough idea. Let’s say your tank capacity is 10 gallons for example. If you need to fill it completely from empty, it could approach 10 gallons. If you want to add half a tank, it would be roughly 5 gallons. If you want to add a quarter tank, it would be roughly 2.5 gallons.

IF YOU PAY AT THE PUMP WITH A CARD AND DO NOT GO INSIDE TO PAY:
If you hold the handle with your hand, or use the kickstand to hold, the handle, it will automatically stop pumping when your tank is full.
You don’t have to fill it all the way up. If you want to pump a specific amount of money ($10), you will have to watch the meter and manually stop pumping when you reach the desired amount of money.
IF YOU PREPAY INSIDE THE BUILDING WITH CASH OR CARD:

If you want to fill up your tank, this will be tricky, because you don’t know exactly how much money it will cost to fill up your tank. But you will have to choose an amount of money to pay. For example, let’s choose $10.
When you go outside to the pump and start pumping gas, it will automatically turn off at $10 (or whatever amount you choose to pre pay inside).
They require pre-pay inside when using cash, because they don’t want people to fill up their tank with gas and leave without paying.

😂 i just moved to the midwest from the east coast and experienced a bit of embarrassment a couple months ago when I started getting use to driving again 🙃
Thank you for this, always got weird looks for saying I wasn’t sure how to do it
Glad it helped!
From the UK so might be a simply answered question. If I pre pay $100 but only end up using $70, do I go back in to get my change?
If you prepay with a card, the difference will go back into the card.
If you prepay with cash, you can go back inside and get the difference back in cash.
I am a Tesla Driver and I’m watching this for research purposes
I don’t even drive yet but I just felt like I should watch this. I’m definitely still nervous because honestly I don’t think I’d even know when to fill up the gas tank, or how often I’d need to.
Don’t worry, after you work through it once, you’ll have it mastered.
You didn't mention about looking around for loitering. It's smart to drive around the gas station lot. Could be car jackers.
For sure. And never go at 2 AM. Daylight hours only.
Thanks. Appreciate it . I found this video very useful
Glad it helped!
very helpful and clear thank you very much
Glad it helped!
You forgot to mention. Always look around before you get out. Many people are carjacked and robbed at stations now days. Have all doors locked no valuables in view. Check pump for skimmer. Always get a receipt in case gas is bad.
For sure. And don’t do it at 2 AM either.
The skimmer might be above the heads of newbies and outside the scope of the video.
There were some people walking around but I waited for the way to clear and didn't hit anyone or anything on the way out 👍
Great job!
Can you prepaid at the pump?
@@yobruh6029
Normally, you swipe your card at the pump to activate the pump.
Great video!! Thanksss so much
You're so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
well, today I learn something new that in the US, almost all gas pump got 1 nozzle and you had to choose by pushing the button/type of gas u need...
while at where I live, we got multiple nozzles for different type of gas.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, this helped! 👍
Glad it helped!
In Australia we just have different nozzles for each fuel type.
Is it a bad idea to use debit instead of your credit at the pump, id much perfer tap to pay if that makes it extra secure
You said i have to wait for the click till its full? But if i dont want to fuel my car to the fullest, just for example 3 liters? How can i stop it ?
You can stop pumping gasoline any time you want to without filling it all the way up. The pump will show the amount pumped and the cost as you pump. When you reach the desired amount, you can stop pumping.
If you are holding the handle lever with your hand to pump, just let go of the lever and it will stop pumping.
If you are using the little kickstand to hold the lever so it will pump without holding it with your hand, squeeze the lever to release the kickstand, then let go of the lever to stop pumping.
This newbie thanks you 👍

New mandatory video for all my customers before they pump gas.
Cool! Glad it’s helpful!
Or for New Jersey drivers. We're not allowed to pump our own gas. I moved to PA and I'm terrified. LOL
I had some friends in Oregon who also experienced this. It was illegal to pump your own gas there too.
Great stuff. Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you I'm going to be working at a gas station to pump gas
Awesome!
Was this made for people in Oregon before they made self serve legal?
Mostly new drivers. I had multiple teenagers recommend that I make this video.
But, when I was in the army many years ago, I knew two guys that were from Oregon who had to pump gas for the first time. It’s just one of those things that everybody takes for granted, but at some point, everybody does it for the first time.
Thank you it was super helpful.
So happy it helped!
Thank You 😊
How do you pay first if you don’t know how much you need to fill the tank up?
I believe it just remembers your card info and maybe does a payment authorization beforehand and then charges you based on the actual filled amount.
If it’s 91 octane should I just go premium?
That’s the way to do it.
What buttons to press in case one wants a specific number of litres only eg 20 litres ?
You can watch the display on the pump, which will show the accumulated volume and cost as you pump, and stop pumping when it reaches a desire amount.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial thank you
I learned how to drive in the Middle East and we all get our cars fueled by workers at the gas stations so I’ve never done it. If I go back to the US I won’t know how to do it so that’s why I’m here 😂
Nice!
Thank you
How about how to you recover from sticker shock?
lol.
So it charges your card afterwards?
That’s correct. It authorizes your card before you start pumping to make sure you have enough money to pay, and it actually charges your card when you’re done pumping and put the nozzle back on the pump.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Thanks for the clarification.
Or, there may be a little piece of chrome trim that you have to twist so the left tail light will hinge downward exposing the fill cap.
Or a license plate that folds down with the gas cap behind it.
93 is premium in USA?
Sure is! I’m pumping gas right now, Lol!
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial in Europe we have 98 n stuff
@@MESSY-AF Europe is rated different...DUH
but if i’m paying with cash then how do i know how much gas i’ll need?
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Thank you for answering!!
I just got my first car and appreciate your help!! 🙏😭
@@kellycroissant8015 no problem! Awesome, congrats and enjoy!

I ride a motorized bicycle, I can ask for $1 gas right?
Yes you can!
Does my car have to be on or off? Or does it mot matter
It should be off. There will probably be signs on the pump saying to turn off your vehicle.
Thanksssss
Thanks now I’m a pro😂
Awesome!
should I lock the car while i do this or smth?? 😭🙏
What if I want to pay in cash?
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial ok thank you 🙏
Talk to me about those gas price
I don’t even look anymore. I just fill it up, and it is what it is.

i had this situation where the pump would keep fueling and i couldn't get it to stop it happened but to take it out i had gas splattered all over my clothes what should i do if this situation occurs again
And where is the quantity specified? How much gasoline am i filling here ?
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Thank you very much for your time and explanation, Good video
I heard a guy say it keeps locking
Shut off car while refueling?
Yes.
There will probably be stickers on the pump saying to turn off the vehicle while fueling.
Why is the lowest grade in my country Singapore 95?
Because they use the RON system, while he's talking about the AKI
AKI 87 = RON 91
91 = 95
93 = 98 respectively
Seeing 89 for $4.10 is crazy. I’m unhappy about my gas being over 3 dollars.
Gas prices can get wild sometimes. It only goes up over time.
surly the higher the octane the better
Nope. Just a waste of money if you don’t have a high-performance engine that requires it. Zero benefit unless it’s required.
