This was the song he wrote about leaving Genesis...walking right out of the machinery, his heart going boom boom boom. Turns out he made the right decision. One of the more serious songs certainly worth knowing is his tribute to Steven Biko, called "Biko". Most of his songs are better than most other songs. A great driving song, this one, for sure.

Gabriel left Genesis?? I thought he was kicked out of Genesis.

@@crekow Yeah, they kicked Steve Jobs out of Apple, and paid the price, for losing their chief visioneer. Gabriel was Genesis' chief visioneer, and kept on creating new worlds, while Genesis went to pop.

Gabriel was much better as a solo artist, and Genesis with Phil Collins singing lead did better without Peter. It was a win-win

As a UK listener, I'm so glad you listened to this song. It is quintessentially English. Solsbury Hill is a lovely hill overlooking the old city of Bath in Somerset, England. Wikipedia said it's about a spiritual experience he had up there. I think you listened to 'Don't Give Up' that he sung with Kate Bush previously. Her songs are amazing and she has a very unique voice! - I would recommend listening to ''Wuthering Heights'. From Peter Gabriel - 'Sledgehammer' is a funky, upbeat tune!

This is a haunting and also joyous song.
Gabriel was the lead of the progressive rock group Genesis. The prog rock movement inspired great music, but it was often over-flamboyant with avant-garde displays of weird for the sake of weird. This resulted in frontman Gabriel spending inordinate amounts of time being on display as an oddity for the audience. One day he just walked away. It freed him and he could be the husband, father, musician he wanted to be. Like being set free from a stodgy prep school. In this case just a forced environment that was a prison despite its pretense of avant-garde.
Solsbury Hill was a favorite meditative place for Gabriel.
There’s a video of Gabriel singing this song over decades mashed together that’s just amazing. It is the epitome of the joy this song still evokes for him.

Hooray! ... this is such a great song. Love it, love it. The music, and the lyrics. The rhythm is so unusual, yet it works beautifully. I came to know this song before I heard the meaning in context of Peter Gabriel's career, but I found personal meaning in it for my own life. The lyrics hit just that right tone of not being too specific, yet not too vague. It sits perfectly in the field of imagination, with rich imagery, and with a sense of magic and wonder. I love the concept in verse two in which he resolves to hold his experience inside himself, because "my friends would think I was a nut" and "open doors would soon be shut." Yet, this inspiration stays strong, he listens to it, and it helps direct his decisions and actions. Absolutely love that. What a glorious song.

Good reaction Miss. i saw Peter Gabriel live in concert in Liverpool UK in 1980, i was 19. He opened his show and, came out on stage singing this song with a acoustic guitar, black suit, white T-shirt, Sporting no shoes or socks. Can still recall it now.

His third album, the one with the melting face, is an absolute masterpiece. The song about Stephen BIKO is about as good as it gets. No one ever seems to react to it. They've reacted to the inferior live version. The studio track is SO powerful.

a good chance it was off his masterpiece “So.” Everything off the album is great.
“In Your Eyes,” “Red Rain,” “Sledgehammer,” “Don’t Give Up.”

Love Genesis, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel.
What an incredible tune to open your solo career! As said below he wrote it about leaving the band. I think it was a response to his good friend Tony Banks lyrics for 'Mad Man Moon' released earlier. Banks seems to ask: why? saying you are looking for a mirage, never satisfied. This song is a march......Peter marched right out of Genesis. It was a good move for everyone concerned.

Hi Angela, So glad you're reacting to this Gem from Mr Gabriel, A lot of his music/lyrics especially this one, I find deeply profound almost Mystical bit like Bowie's early 70's work, You're not sure why it has such an effect on you but it does, Bit of Trivia for you the band Genesis with original member Peter Gabriel were formed less than a mile away from where I am now in Godalming, Surrey, I've even worked for them at what used to be their private recording studios nearby and Mike Rutherford's private house, all lovely down to earth people especially Phil sadly not in good health these days PS I'm making this sound like I'm a musician or something sadly no just a humble Carpet Fitter! Best Wishes Jim, Surrey, UK X

It Has to Read Peter Gabriel. I believe He won the Rights to this, & 1, or 2 other Songs written by An Early Version of Genesis!! But This was A Genesis Song, because you can CLEARLY Hear Phil Collins Singing too! And I remember Seeing them both singing this on a TV Show back in the Late 70's. And I don't remember if The Other Members of Genesis were on the show or Not. But I Know for a Fact I saw Gabriel, & Collins Both Singing this!!

Loved this song from the get go when it came out. I was never a Genesis fan though. I bought all of Peters solo albums up through the 90's. This song has an unusual 7/4
time signature which I think gives it its movement forward, yet slightly offbeat.

Check out one of France's most revered artists, a true legend : Daniel Balavoine. There are so many wonderful songs by him, but I would suggest "Sauver l'amour" (Save love) ua-cam.com/video/Hijfh1vGvUE/v-deo.html, or "Un enfant assis attend la pluie" (A seated child is waiting for the rain" ua-cam.com/video/27y70YlIUlo/v-deo.html.
