This is my favorite type of education. Interesting, riddled with science, familiar but strange and new. I really hope that the food and drink museum becomes a thing and successful at that!
Occasionally on UA-cam you find something that just boggles the mind with fascination of interesting science facts that you had no idea about before you saw the video. This is one of those interesting videos that is both entertaining and informative. Thanks for that.
This guy gave the best damn interview. He is the definition of smooth and seems like the most comfortable guy to be around, while still maintaining interest and engaging people.
On the streets of China that's not as much a concern, but in a kitchen setting or more of a business oriented environment you could set up a space (permanent or temporary with plastic sheeting) to help 'catch' the grains on the floor.
So happy David Arnold and MOFAD are getting air time. These folks are amazing. I would give my left nut to work with them in NYC. So happy to have backed the Puffing Gun Kickstarter.
I think this is very interesting coverage and highlights the thing that makes Tested special. We don't need 50 videos covering different features of the iPhone from the infinite number of tech websites out there. The video could have been edited for length just to avoid the people who complain when something is longer than 5 minutes. There is probably about 3 minutes that I would have skipped. Keep up the good work.
The guy says he is worried the item wasn't tested so he has his little blast chamber. But he used what looks like 1/4 or 1/2 inch polycarbonate panels. If that thing has a problem any bigger than a steam leak he is going to need multiple inches for any kind of protection.
With the pressure relief valve he has installed I believe it cannot get anywhere near hot enough to blow the cast iron pot. He didn't mention the pressure needed to get the puff, but I bet it is a lot lower than the pressure needed to tun the pot into a steam powered grenade.
Dave Arnold is doing some awesome work If you like science and food check out his podcast and website at Cooking Issues and his other project The Museum of Food and Drink . Love the video, keep up the great work!
Very interestig allthough i would have liked to see some more examples of different grains and the stages of puffing. From as slight a size difference to the thing they´ve ben able to expand the most.
This guys awesome. He makes a killer gin and juice on youtube from "Behind the Drink". I'm pretty sure he operates or works for the bar Booker and Dax in New York.
I don't know. If you very shortly bake some bacon. Then put it in this gun, let it puff. And then bake some more till it is crispy. You know, some sort of bacon krupuk.
If they make a rice popping minigun I would so buy it. Imagine kids parties? You want some rice pops? BOOB BOOB BOOB BOOB Ratttatatatatatatatat. Raining cereal everywhere!
Looking at Adam & Jamies boiler explosions, that tiny piece of flimsy plastic, compared to the thickness of the cast iron steel. How can I put it.... fake goodfeels are worst goodfeels.

Love how casual that guy was, just slowly chomping away at stuff while he explained everything.

The cleaning staff dislikes this.

This is the reason I subscribed to Tested....awesome things that get TESTED.

I'm so glad that i wasn't the only one that was entranced by "this guy". Dave Arnold is so very cool.

He Owns/Operates it. Dave Arnold is amazing.
Mr Arnold would make one hell of a lecturer.
Very smooth with the handshake at the end ;)

Another case of safety making things less safe. Good job everyone!

Norm blends his words so much I wonder if he's drunk most of the time

I use this in my factory down in Zimbabwe...we are pros at this..
This guy needs to do a TED Talk on the subject!

Looks like it just makes a mess
Well done; thumbs up!
That should come to the birthplace of cereal, Battle Creek Michigan, at the Kellogg Super Breakfast Saturday fest!
We have one of the one of those things in our local supermarket. It shoots out kind of big rice crispy pancakes kind of things. They are quite tasty
Man, Adam and Jamie need to use one of these things to redesign the steam cannon!
to me this guy sounds like he's just quickly saying everything that comes to his mind before he forgets it.
This guys awesome. He makes a killer gin and juice on youtube from "Behind the Drink". I'm pretty sure he operates or works for the bar Booker and Dax in New York.
He has hosted a internet radio show for years. Cooking Issues on Heritage Radio Network
how could i not remember that!
Thanks for reminding me
"Edible content" hahaha, Norm.
I don't know.
If you very shortly bake some bacon. Then put it in this gun, let it puff. And then bake some more till it is crispy.
You know, some sort of bacon krupuk.
pretty sure ive never seen people "in the streets of Asia" use these. That was probably quite a while ago
Did Norm say "edible content"?
Wow.. just wow. That made my brain hurt
I greatly thank you for mentioning this
"And blow things up! Everyone likes to blow things up!" Best part of the video by far.
I don't usually point out spelling errors, but that is funny.
i like david you can bring him back
This is the best thing EVER.I need one
Let's say it holds up, will the tiny steel frame hold contain it? I don't think so. And I would love to see an explosive test of this thing.
DKTAz00 yes that frame will hold it.
So Haley Joel Osment is working in a puffing lab in New York eh? Nice to see his career really took off.
I do this on a much larger scale, for a living. Along with other ready-to-eat breakfast cereals.
they should invest in a Korean model: 뻥튀기 기계 it comes with frames and safety latches etc. ... we use it ALL the time lol.
Hello, can you please help me out?
nice job norm
I am an asian american and now i know how the chinese popcorn that my mother always bought is made... thanks Tested! lol
I don't know if there is a risk for catastrofic failure with the small chinese one, it looks super thick ;)
Can you puff green coffee beans please?
Yes and he was standing behind a massive blast shield because they are terrifying.
I never thought puffing cereal would be interesting. But here we are.
That guy was all over the place, I constantly couldn't figure out what the point of his sentence was.
If they make a rice popping minigun I would so buy it. Imagine kids parties? You want some rice pops? BOOB BOOB BOOB BOOB Ratttatatatatatatatat. Raining cereal everywhere!
They used this thing at mythbusters, Adam opened this thing wearing a bombsuit XD
Mythbusters had a segment on that device if anyone is interested
FYI, this is basically how tobacco is expanded during the manufacturing process.
Kellogg is rolling in his grave that his cereals are now 'sinfully decadent'.
great video, i learned something.
This guy wouldn't fire a puffing gun by hand? Didn't Jamie and Adam do that with popcorn in an episode of Mythbusters? lol, yup
This was really interesting!
at 10:40 he's probably referring to good 'ol reverend Sylvester Graham
Norm rocking the zooey Deschanel bangs!
Anyone remember the video with Adam Jamie and Alton Brown where they played with one of these?
Puffed Chicken: you know you want to.
Yes, but I don't think the result would be all that appetizing.
yeah he's a character
Is it possible to puff nuts in that thing? Peanuts, almonds and that stuff..
Didn't Adam test one of these things with popcorn on Mythbusters?
I had no idea this existed
Safety is number one priority! CrazyRussianHacker would have gone mental if he saw you guys doing this without eyewear! :o
I think they need to work on their containment/recovery systems. They seem to be wasting a lot of grain.
I believe the Mythbusters used one as well.
This is much safer than 'The Huffing Gun' which causes brain damage.
You understand how ballistic plastic and bullet proof glass works right?
8:22 DooDoo welds
Safety glasses guys!
It unscrews itself? How about reversing the direction of the motor?
my breakfast was shot out of a cannon there's a great movie about the invention of breakfast cereal
-
--the road to wellville-- ...
Awkward 5 seconds of silence at 9:05 ...
Great video though
Norm's palms are extremely grandpa like...
Is it just me or does this guy look like an older Neville Longbottom :D?
He wants to make a commercial product to sell in people's homes, is anyone else reminded of The Cornballer from Arrested Development?
That was amazing
Making puffed cereal. That's about it, really.
mythbusters should blow this up
anyone else hear"ricin corn?" Thanks, breaking bad
that's before they modified it to work with a motor
Not sure I get it... Puffing grains is good, but what's the point when it blasts them all over the place? It's useless as food then.
I liked the part when things went boom
Can you put meat in such a device?
Looking at Adam & Jamies boiler explosions, that tiny piece of flimsy plastic, compared to the thickness of the cast iron steel. How can I put it.... fake goodfeels are worst goodfeels.
2:05 what is he saying "thatch style gun"?
he looks like he could be Bruce Cambells brother
Oh only 2 views, I feel special.
He looks like Bruce Campbell :)
i like that guy.. cool dudes get funded
Looks like a Baldwin.
Cannot be played on iPad!?
In a bomb suit
:D
Those eyes at :50 O_O
Sounded like he said the big fucking gun
Nice try, Dave Arnold.
