Don't feel bad, I am a 56 year old man and I went to animation school over 20 years ago, and this movie was what we used as reference for our teaching. I normally don't buy toys, but I am into robotics, and it's usually too expensive to build something THIS expressive and full directional movements, so ofc. I gotta have it. Years ago My son and I made a pretty convincing Wall-e using Lego robotics + mindstorm, Lego and Lego technic parts. I wish we had filmed it for youtube. it was able to follow you, go towards sounds, avoid obstacles, and animated the neck for pitch and yaw, but did not have a way to get roll or get the head sides to move up and down with the parts we had. Even still it looked very much alive when interacting with it. It was roughly a foot tall, and totally made me think of doing a full scale one, maybe RC with a Pi to handle some autonomic performance and interaction, but at that size (and weight) I don't know that I would want to give it automatous mobility.
This is amazing. I was a modelmaker in the toy industry and in complete awe. I can tell they are trying so hard not to take it apart to see how it works.

It's heartwarming to see Adam still have a rhat child-like fascination and excitement with these things. He's designed and seen some of the coolest machines out there, yet at the end of the day he's still impressed with all the new things he sees. Props to him!
I remember at the age of 19 or 20, that upon seeing me become animated and excited by something (I think I had made some serendipitous programming discovery) a friend (who was 14 years older than I) commented that it was kinda pathetic that I could become so enthusiastic over something so trivial! I immediately told him that I thought it was incredibly sad that he had nothing in his life that would inspire such joy in him as this did in me. I've never forgotten that moment some 40 years ago. Seeing Adam's reactions again and again in his videos, never fails to bring that memory to the fore and cement my original opinion. If you can't find something in your life to make you react this way, your life is so much less than it could be. IMHO!
Thankfully I was lucky enough to have one when they were first released, though my parents went through HELL trying to get one for me. As they walked out of Cardiff Toys'R'Us (after getting one of the last ones in stock) they were offered £300 for it from someone who missed out. Thankfully they said no, even if it would've made them a huge profit. I had many magical years with my Buzz and Woody toys. It's like you said, they were the must have toy of that year. You couldn't get them anywhere for ages.
@@KatieWilliams1990xWe got one but my father ended up keeping it for himself so it wouldn't get damaged and still rests on his nightstand to this day. Works great and in perfect condition so he was definitely right not to trust us with it.
are you telling me that I can finally have Tim Allen in a Buzz Lightyear robot with a mouth that moves???? this is going to be a very expensive end of the year
One of my favorite aspects of Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story is the design of the box he came in. He comes prepackaged in his very own space ship, their recreation is perfect
Im 53 and Im so getting one of these , I still have an OG buzz lightyear toy from the 1st movie that my mom got me for christmas when I was 24 lol (Ive been into 3d modelling and animation for decades and pixar have always been heroes of mine. I watched toy story so many times when it came out in complete awe of their skill) I never thought that there would ever be an articulated version its an incredible bit of tech and engineering.
I understand why for practical purposes for articulation, but I wish he had his classic expression from the first movie when you see Buzz standing there atop Andy's bed for the first time. None of the Buzz's over the course 30yeras of toys have nailed down that look. Cool all the same!
As amazing as this is, nothing has beaten the Thinkway Toy Story Collection Buzz in terms of the authentic packaging, sounds, and play features that are identical to the movie. The wings when you press the red button swooshing out is perfect and the laser button is actually a button just like the movie. It glows in the dark too! The only thing it needed was a collapsible helmet, karate chop action, and a closer face sculpt to the OG...We are getting closer to that every year it seems!
That one was one of the earliest (or perhaps the first? My memory is fuzzy) example of them doing that, and I don't think I've seen a single one of them that looks better than doing a full animatronic. I get why they tried it, but it's disappointing that twenty years later they still keep using that tech when they already have something that works so much better and looks truly authentic in a way that a projection/screen face never could. But of course, it's probably the cheaper option. :(
@JosephDavies cheaper yes, but also more problematic based on reception from guests but more importantly the projection can sometimes malfunction and have flashed error codes, or flickering, or just straight up shut off all together. So thankfully due to these mounting problems they have finally began to shy away from these and even teased the replacement of some of them. Their is only 1 or 2 examples of these truly working well and that's Radiator Springs Racers on the Cars, and The Seven Dwarves Mine Train because they are lit with highly vibrant black lights anyway so an extremely bright face doesn't look off. But if a company can get this much emotion and movement out of something so small then disney has no more excuses.
Price of toy is 599$, Highly Lifelike with Movable Eyes, Mouth, and Walking Motion 23 Smart Joints for Natural Movement and High Playability Immersive Voice Interaction with 34 Commands and 200+ Original Audio Clips, Programming with App and Web Platform

I had to switch this to the big screen, not just to see this amazing piece of beautiful work, but to see Adam and Norm’s reactions better, too. I was smiling like an idiot the whole video. Thank you guys!❤
For a moment there it really seemed like Toy Story buzz was actually hanging out with Adam and Norm. This is mind blowing robotics and I can't wait to see more of this!

A lot of artistic licence was used in the total span Buzz Lightyear's wings in the movie version, basically it's a physically impossiblity that will forever leave these real world toys with wing envy.
Ok, I am literally already wearing a Buzz Lightyear hoodie before watching this video, and I have been a Buzz Lightyear fan since 1995. I'm in my 40s lol. I need these 2 Buzz robots! The price point on this is incredible! I would've thought this was like $2000 honestly. But $600 is almost down to a reasonable price. The fact that this is sub $1000 is absolutely astounding to me.
this would be the perfect thing to buy a kid alongside a home camera system and a regular buzz toy. get them to leave their buzz toy in view of the camera so they can catch him moving, swap them out when they're not around, show them the footage later
Almost 30 years later and we still want an exact movie replica of Buzz Lightyear. I would pay good money for a full retracting helmet, arm bending/karate chop 100% accurate Buzz.
If they made a less sophisticated version that does everything the toy in the movie does for Andy (karate chop, laser button, 3 buttons on the front and a full opening visor) it would be amazing. I think the electronics are cool, but if taking most of it out gets the price down to less than 600 bucks I think you'll be in buisness. I know a full opening visor is practically impossible, but I think one that is two quarter sections might be possible if his torso isn't full of electronics. Bonus features could be a removable arm and an openable back with the Demo switch (and double A batteries, but I don't think you can do that with a proper opening visor).
3:42 Pretty close! I fully realize there are some details that don't translate to real life for packaging purposes, but the movies gave the boxes windowed cockpits and "real" wings. Also, Buzz's origin speech is on the side of the box in the movie.
After the first 14 seconds into the video, I immediately went to their website and ordered one! I was disappointed when they came out with the "Lightyear" Buzz because I so badly wanted a Toy Story Buzz. This is incredible!
So funny! Just two days ago I was wondering about the bipedal robot bent knees gait. I did some google research to find out exactly why they walk, as Adam perfectly describes, “like they crapped their pants” and if it was something robot manufacturers could overcome in the near future
After this video I just had to buy one. The packaging is truly pristine and Buzz Lightyear is just perfect. Very happy with their (Robosen) eye for detail.

Those 2 versions look awesome together robosen nailed it 👍🏽 feels like a dream come true
After the first 14 seconds into the video, I immediately went to their website and ordered one! I was disappointed when they came out with the "Lightyear" Buzz because I so badly wanted a Toy Story Buzz. This is incredible!
The way the walking Buzz moves reminds me of the competition football playing robots.
a great bit of animatronics. I'm waiting for a lego minifig robot at 1:1 scale. that would be unbelievable, but this bly is pretty impressive.
So funny! Just two days ago I was wondering about the bipedal robot bent knees gait. I did some google research to find out exactly why they walk, as Adam perfectly describes, “like they crapped their pants” and if it was something robot manufacturers could overcome in the near future
As a robotical engineering student, the amount of complexity in this toy is absolutely shocking! Props to disney’s engineers, they did an amazing job.
Adam’s face when he opened the box was like he was looking at his new born child for the first time 😊
This toy really makes him come to life, it's amazing
After this video I just had to buy one. The packaging is truly pristine and Buzz Lightyear is just perfect. Very happy with their (Robosen) eye for detail.
I hope they do a Zurg version so they can interact with each other. I had to pre order him, so glad the voice is that of Tim Allen!
I am totally with you. Hearing Tim’s voice in this figure makes me want to order one!
