I’m from Orkney and grew up in Stromness. I live away now, but hearing you reading this brought me right back to my childhood, everything is described so perfectly in his writing and your reading of it brought it to life.
So nice to see you again Malcolm. To think that you were only 25 minutes from my home when you visited Wheaton College and Tolkien's writing desk and the wardrobe that inspired C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" a very small world indeed. I've taken a newfound and keen interest in George Mackay Brown's writing since I discovered through DNA testing that I'm a Viking with deep roots in the Orkney's. Very exciting. Peace and serene piping. Gary
You sir are a treasure! I was searching for something interesting on pipes and pipe tobacco and what do I find, a professor a priest a poet and… a pipe smoker. I found gold!!!
Every time I watch Malcolm, I have to dig out the Comoy "Everyman" , stuff it with Dunhill 965 Mixture, or Peterson's and puff away. No Scotch, but tons of rich Sumatran coffee. Malcolm, please go modern with you lighter, a Bic perhaps.. quit inhaling lighter fluid... did you ever have the supreme joy of smoking the famous "Craven" mixture in the pink-lidded tin with the little Kitty's face. Sadly, it and Neptune flake is no more. You've sold me on Orkney.. peace out from TX.
It seems that every time I see another video of yours, I'm adding to my book wishlist. Lol. I just pre-ordered another book that is still alive, a new edition being released this August here in the States of C.S. Lewis's "English Literature in the Sixteenth Century (Excluding Drama)." I think it may have been his "O Hell" volume, but I may be mistaken on that. Now, I'm going to have to look into this one too.
That's the "OHEL" volume all right, and a book to love especially for its first chapter, which is mind-opening stuff of the first rank, and the material on Spenser and Shakespeare. I have two copies, one a paperback I've had for over 40 years for marking to within an inch of its life, and one, an Oxford clothbound book with dust jacket, to respect without marking, which I bought at a dealer's table at a Tolkien conference over 20 years ago (for $10). You might find you'll want to read the whole book, but those pages are not to be missed whatever you read or don't read.
Have been to Thurso and had an Orkney beer(very heavy but good) visited Strathy to see where we started from. 28 of June is me my father and my cousin Margret from Durham county sharing a birthday . Good to hear you again.
I have The Twelfth Night in the same series, of the same vintage, also from my mother. Those Rackham illustrations fascinated me too (but I never became a poet.)
I'm sure if you relax and just play with words that come naturally to you with thoughts of what make you happy , I've done about 30 poems and some have been published , one was in a 1st edition on the first page of a one off publication.
So thrilled to see a new video up! I love your pipe pickup tradition. My family will be in England in July and I plan on picking up a pipe to commemorate our trip! Just need to find a great tobacconist!
Ahhh, malt and a pipe, heavenly sent! I enjoy nothing more than a pipeful of Peterson’s EMP or Standard mixture and a good measure of Lagavulin whilst reading. My favourite way in fact to further my philosophy and theology learning as you have to be relaxed into it. Currently reading Professor Peter Kreeft on Aquinas. You have to slow down and it goes hand in hand with few distractions and thoughtfulness. The pipe is one vice (if it can be called that) I will resist giving up. My gp doesn’t approve but has given up lecturing me now😂. Just discovered your channel and am a kindred spirit!
@@MalcolmGuitespell Indeed! I have a copy. The Kreeft one is really an edited summation of Aquinas, the "Suma of the Suma", excerpts compiled with helpful footnotes and explanations. Chesterton remains one of my favourite authors. His "Orthodoxy" is a fabulous book! Confessions of St Augustin by FJ Sheed is also one I'd recommend. There'll never be enough time to read everything on my wish list so I try to be selective!
Happy to see another of your videos and even happier that you are talking about one of my favourite writers G,M,B. I could not agree more that George was a parochial writer engaging with universal themes. I also own the original paperback of An Orkney Tapestry which is a gem of a book. I recently read George Mackay Brown And The Scottish Catholic Imagination by Linden Bicket which was excellent so I can imagine how good the new edition of An Orkney Tapestry is. Looking forward to hearing you read more G. M. B, poetry Cheers.
Hi Malcolm, I’m so glad to have found you on here. I had a strange thing happen this morning, which may amuse. After watching this particular talk through yesterday, I went and bought the book. I also was reading the wiki page on Brown. It details the incident of his scarf going missing for a time. On its reappearance, he remarked of it - ‘the scarf that launched 1,000 quips’. 👌 On the train to work this morning a fellow cyclist went to disembark, as he was about to leave I noticed he’d left his scarf underneath his seat. Fortunately, I was able to return it to him. Felt a little like returning the venerable scarf to its venerable owner. Allow me to buy you a coffee, dear sir. Best, Aged P ✌️
I've had a copy of An Orkney Tapestry for several years, which I bought in a local charity shop here in Tuam, County Galway. It's my favourite book & I started reading it again yesterday while I was in a waiting room, its pocket size being perfect for such occasions. One part that stood out for me was the book's description of the Battle of Clontarf, "one of the key European battles", which wasn't quite how my school history lessons here in Ireland described it.
Welcome back to Norfolk :) ! As always, an enjoyable video. It's actually nudged me to look for books on Norfolk history - i think it would be interesting to visit Norwich as a 'tourist' and look at various sites, perhaps especially the ones mentioned in the CJ Samson book Tombland as a start.

The Viking Whisky is a lovely Whisky, one of my Sons bought me a bottle of the very same that you are drinking or sipping 😋, the bottle is a work of Art , so ive kept it 👌 And i have Viking ancestory plus Scottish & Irish although im English. Cheers Malcolm 🍻
My mind was doing the closest thing to time traveling within the first ten seconds of your reading. Just imagine if that publisher had refused to publish it on the grounds that it was not what they were looking for. What a loss that would have been.

Welcome aboard!
Just discovered this channel. Found myself pouring out a single malt and settling down to listen to a story. Incredibly snug. Cheers and amen.
Enjoyed your reading so much, I went out and bought a copy.
I’m currently having a drop of the Highland Park 12-yr old Viking Honour as I watch this. Perfect accompaniment.
Yes! This and a pipe of Quiet Nights (: Cheers

Thank you Fr Malcolm. Welcome back!
So glad to see u back.Missed you.
What a pleasure to discover a new author; it's good to have you back, Malcolm.
Welcome back. I have missed the Spells, and this one is sheer delight. Now I have a new book and another Scotch to add to my library.
My Moms family are all from Orkney. This is wonderful to hear!
This prompted me to find my copy and reread George Mackay Brown's lovely tribute to his fellow Orkney poet, Robert Rendall.

So glad to see another video. Enjoy the poems and the back stories. Just finished Lifting the Veil. Thank you.
